- This 300zx z32 project car was passed down to us from Jeff, an absolute legend. He offered up this car to be used as parts due to rust and maintenance, but we decided to take on the challenge of restoring this Nissan 300zx back to its former glory. For this 300zx build, we plan to keep things as period correct as possible while also deleting as many VG30 emission components as possible.

I would call it the "free-hundred ZX" :D
FREEZX
ba dum tsss
I came here specifically to say this.. only took me a day to think of it XD
I can't believe you're going to try and restore that Z! It's so nice to see someone who genuinely cares about what they do as much as you do
I'd love to know the lore behind 90's Nissan engineers hating mechanics so much.
I can give you the short story.
Nissan in 1978: we need to make our Z car faster for racing
Engineers in 1979: Behold the L28ET, an I6 with a single turbo
Years of racing go by until.....
Nissan in 1983: we need to make our Z car even faster for racing
Engineers in 1984: behold the VG30ET, a V6 with a single turbo
Years of racing go by until.....
Nissan in 1988: we need to make our Z car faster than everything, don't hold back
Engineers in 1989: Behold the VG30DETT, a V6 with twin turbos, dohc, and VTC.
Years of racing go by until.....
they didn't hate mechanics they just thought their designs were so perfect we'd never have to fix them, hope this helps
Similar situation is going on with all the higher spec japanese cars from the 90's. They where ahead of their time but they still used 90's hardware to their extremes, thats why you have vacuum lines going to T to another vacuum line. In general best thing you can do to a old Z, GTR, FD RX7 ect is to take the engine out, throw the 10 kilo's of vacuum lines in the trash and install a stand alone ecu where the job of 5 vacuum lines and two switches is done by one sensor because after all those years its guaranteed the vacuum lines have rotted
The Z32 was said to be the first car designed completely by computer-aided design (CAD) on a Cray-2 super computer. Unfortunately the computer crammed the engine in and didn’t factor in humans were gonna work on it someday. Well now that I think about it, maybe this was a cruel joke from a human hating computer 😂
Thr 300zx was one of the first cars completely designed in CAD. So on paper it was a perfect snug fit in the engine bay. Bur as you can see it's a mechanic nightmare.. the twin turbos are worse 😂😂 great cars tho
Who ever put a long bolt that doesn't come out all the way is insane lol, that Bronze finish looks amazing
Right!? I guess they never wanted it to be removed lol
Hyped on the bronze🔥
They come out just fine when you pull the lower intake manifold 😂
These cars always were like peeling an onion, a lot of shops back in the day would flat out refuse to work on these cars out of warranty.
Or as ive also heard
Its like Nissan shrink wrapped the car around the engine!!
@@twoeightythreez ohh i see now i wanna find a video of them being on the factory line assembly
Best car content on RUclips. Good vibes, good music, and most of all… no ego car dude energy.
Having two Z32s its amazing. One Project 1 of 1 Ka Swap + Turbo and a Second One Oem+ Build with AC and Cruise Control and Black on Black.
That bronze was absolutely the correct colour! Looks so good there
While I was into minitrucks an building truck stuff in the early 2000's my brother was a z nut . He owned at least 12 of these cars . I just showed him your video.. he said they use to just take the engines out to any major work to em . But his personal z's was all engine swapped . He either used a 4.3 or 2.8's out of s-10's . He just said building the z to go fast with those wasn't too bad but he does wished he used the 2.4 swap after seeing yours . He said it's nice to see z's still in the wild
Pulling the whole engine everytime is crazy
dude i can't wait for the 300zx to be painted
I can't either especially with that kit its gonna go so hard ,I think a nardo grey wit that hood would be premium
@@Jaimeobrien-kd6lx I'm not a big fan of nardo gray, but preserving that green would maintain the legacy of the car and would remain it unique
@@Jaimeobrien-kd6lxMidnight purple 😭
@@ivanrodriguez8659 you know what my fault you got that, yup I can't lie that would look way better
@@nadaesperavel honestly that is a better idea for real keeping the cars past alive I love it not to much of that anymore unfortunately
@13:14, Passenger side is PRVR, and driver side is AIV. all are for emissions and over engineered. and can be removed with zero negative effects.
I did the intake coolant delete on my VG30 when I had my Z, opted not to do the PCV delete and catchcan but yeah the top end of these engines was so overengineered its crazy
Found your channel a week after you uploaded the engine swap video and following since has been awesome. The 300zx is turning out amazing keep it up Mike!
Appreciate the support boss!
@@PrizzaMike Try to match that bronze engine cover with same cool bronze rims and maybe a bronze stripe on both sides it would look absolutely awesome, black & bronze theme looks cool specially on older cars also it would match the old ''71 - Lotus F1 (JPS) -Jhon Player Special livery of Ayrton Senna .. keep posting Mike and be safe, we really like everything you posted so far, maybe we you can do some more junkyard walks, you never know what rare goodies you might find there for any of your project cars !
omg taking off the hood in oder to transport a new hood, soo relatable.. one of the struggles of using a 90s jdm coupe as a work-truck.
It’s honestly so awesome that you’re restoring Jeff’s Z that car has so much history it’s got to live on! & because of YOU it will live to make more memories 💪🤝🙏 you the man Mike ❤
Please ! Please someone get this young man a shopvac ! Great channel ! I stumbled upon your channel on the day the kick flipping cop blessed you payed it forward based solely off the mutual love for a car ! And that was so heart warming to me I had to subscribe ! I was a pizza guy as well for my first 5 jobs ... simply because I loved to drive ! So yeah I'm 43 and the mechanic bug bit my very young sadly it was b4 youtube so we relied upon the 2 car manuals, Chilton and Haynes was all we had back then so learning took forever ! Anyway Cheers bro and get a shop vacation! Save your engines before the dirt and grim gets in places you can't reach lol other that keep on killing it ! 💯 %
That's awesome you taking the time to fix up we out here support from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Duuuuuude with the refreshed carbon hood, all I can think about is flames running down the side of the Z to complete the look👀
Dude I need a friend like Tim lol he is so genuine
this z deserves to come back to life brother and there is no one better than you to achieve it
Tims reactions are always the best 👌
Pretty sure those solenoids were EGR and Air injection stuff Mike...emissions stuff. I can appreciate you wanting to challenge yourself by doing all that with the engine in the car! Excited to see more of this!
Nailed it. Egr/aiv/rising rate fpr. Can all go in the trash. Lmao.
Can’t wait to see what’s next on both the z’s!
Man those valve covers will look sick with the chrome manifold on…
Also a painted engine bay on the 240zx would be… i‘mma say… delightful🤤
So many ideas one can put in a project… You’re really inspiring Mike! Keep on doing this cuz it’s amazing seein ya do it
Props to restoring the Z instead of parting it out :D
that bronze valve cover def makes it a whole lot better!!!
Dude Those Flames are sick on the new Hood!
The Valve Covers are looking soooo good! I was questioning it because I'm cheap but it looks sooo good.
With old screws, I learned from my grandfather that if you hit the head of the screwdriver with a hammer that it will almost always loosen without stripping. Always a great tip for old screws or bolts honestly but love the channel man keep up the 🔥 content
You’ve easily become one of my favorite RUclips creators. Glad to see you’re restoring such a good car with a great story.
I love how you kept grinding when those guys showed up to dig, you didn't let it phase you and continued doing what you were doing
The new hood looks great and the bronze is fresh. Thank you for the content, its always fun and entertaining 🙂
The passion really shines through. Great job!
Such a big improvement, this is my favourite type of content. There’s nothing like bringing life back into a car that was ready for the junk yard
These videos always hype me up to work on my own projects that @ 15:17 I paused the video, went outside, replaced my auto trans filter + gasket then did Volkswagen's wacky fluid refill process for the 09G 6 speed. Now I back inside finishing the video and typing my meta comment 👍
One of the solinoids is for the egr and the other is for the charcol canister/purge line. I tossed all of that on my sohc KA and now i only have one line for fuel pressure and the big one for brake booster.
The man that offered the car up would be happy you are bringing it back. Good job my dude, plus the cops kickflip is nice bolts 💪
That green Z is the one that officially got me into z32’s , I’ve never really loved them because of the motor but the Turbo KA & the wing /wheels make that thing so dope in my opinion. Shits sickkkk🔥🔥
man this makes me want to paint my valve cover, do a front mount, and wire tuck the loom for that clean look
I had to replace my injectors but didnt want to take the valve covers off to paint so I just got a small can of rustoliem and hand brushed it on lol, Had a red Z so I went with red valve covers and painted the plenum bronze, it looked real nice
you don’t know how much we appreciate these in depth videos, raw authentic content. we appreciate you as much as you do us. thanks for the great video as always. Z’s lookin sick, can’t wait to see how far they go😁
I've always had a soft spot for the z32 but watching you build the green one and now restore the black one really makes me want one
When the “parts car” you bought for the project car, becomes the other project car. 😂😊 I have the same problem
Keeps us busy 😅
Those valve covers make that thing pop! 😍
i’m excited to see more of the restoration ‼️‼️
I think you totally restoring the 300zx is amazing trust me that parts car is going to come in handy .
might not mean much but you’ll always have my support brotha. sounds cliche to say but watching your videos have helped me through so much the past year and a half. was depressed for a long time cause i wasn’t able to see my daughter for a while and believe it or not your videos brought joy to me in those moments and ill forever be grateful for that 💯
Killing it dude! Glad you're deciding to restore this 300!
@15:43, that is a weather seal from the bottom side of the spark plug guides. it selas between the bottom of the spark plug guide and the top of the intake/exhaust covers. this is so when you power wash your motor. water wont get under the spark plug guide and fill up the spark plug galleys with water causing shorts.
Looks great! Stoked you decided to bring back vs part out!
I'm so happy to hear you going to restore the ZX . That carbon fiber hood is sweet !!!
I'm so glad you're doing the valve cover gaskets and line deletes, as im also in this situation with my 300zx. Awesome video!
I dont understand how your cars are so mismatched and rarely painted 1 colour... but still look so incredible... the 300zx is definantly my favourite car of yours! Looks sick man.
😂 I'm glad you're restoring the back one. and I'm glad you slap a turbo. On the green one. Because it needed the turbo.
I had a 93 Z32 that at the time I didnt know had both the 1 and the 1.5 gen injectors, when I got the car it had about 2.5 working injectors and barely stayed running, picking up a set on ebay and discovered they were the 1.5 so I had to get the fuel rail adapters from Z1 with the hex head bolts. Glad I did in the end because every one of the phillips head bolts stripped and I had to used vice grips to crack them loose
bringing back The black one is going to take a lot of work. And I think it's going to take a lot of money. But I know you could do it man. I love that black one. It's all original.
Absolutely love the idea of keeping the hood portion black, but in carbon fiber flame.
And it represents what he started from.
so happy you decided to restore this one. super excited for the series. i feel like you need to have a restore series going at all times on this channel 😆
I'm honestly surprised you just just haven't dropped the engine. Seem like it would be less of a hassle plus easier to film but I also guess there isn't any room for the engine to sit anyways.
True, pulling the engine would have made this easier, I just wanted to see if I could do it while in the car. And you make a great point with having a place to put the engine😅
I am freaking loving this z content !!
The 2 Valves you put out last with the crazy amount of vakuum Hoses are the Hot Start Selenoid. It works the exact way you did as it goes directly into the Bin. Just connect Vakuum Hose directly to the Fuel Pressure Sensor and you are good to go. Funfact: On EU S13 its most likely the first upgrade to the engine with deleting the HSS.
Excellent work! I love seeing these 90's classics back.on the road!
I look foward to your vids every Saturday morning! Thank you mike! I watch them while i drink coffee and go outside to wrench on lowriders and 40’s and 50’s chevys 😂 keep doing you my bro
Can’t wait to hear the free Z engine run sooo hyped on the restoration process 🔥
Mike you've cut into your shoe😮 Please stay safe!
But oh my...this engine bay is cramped...My E39 also has 6 cylinders...other layout but so much more space😅
@05:54, you can delete those pcv ports under plenum, and remove thos pipes that route around back of plenum, just plug the ports onthe driver side valve cover. then on bottom of intake plenum, remove the check valve and use a solid threaded pipe plug with sealant. then... you have the 2 hard pipes that come off of your intake valv covers, you keep those, as those will maintain a vacumm on the crank case to ensure proper crankcase venitallion while minimizing the amount of oil that gets sucked back into your intake system for imissions purposes only.
always happy to see a new video mike!! cant wait for the other to be painted
I really love the hood! has NFS vibes now :D
I hadn't been able to hear the KA 300zx turbo flutter yet omg it sounds so good
I can’t wait to see you save that Z! It’s in good hands, that’s for sure.
Once you delete the e VG, it’s an engine you’ll grow to love. There’s just something about them 😁
glad I came across this when you got it.. now you got me hooked and im into mid 60's Chevies and domestics... but this is interesting as there's a story ... keep going
Omgggg this is the VG build ive always wanted to see
im so glad your building it man
You are one of a kind man, I subbed to you the second I heard you were restoring the T-boned 240 sx, that was and is an insane project.
Great video. I appreciate seeing the process and not speeding through.
This looks awesome Mike! Definitely going to look absolutely amazing when it’s finally complete! ❤
We appreciate your content brotha! Good work on that car 👍👍
I may have commented this on the last free 300zx but it’s definitely gonna be dope to see you do content with the ka 300zx and vg content if it stays vg
It's awesome your restoring the z and now we get to learn about the vg30!
The hood looks like something toms refurb did some months ago
Really good looking on the z
Would love to see a 80s Nissan Pulsar NX with t-tops on your channel w Turbo would be Spicy 🔥
on intake valv covers, dont forget to add a dab of rtv on the front and rear 2 edge of the tc solenoid and then the hump for the cam cap, just in the corners so that oil cant seep out on edges of cam cap and edges of the vtc solenoid. via OEM FSM.
Flames can either look really good or really tacky. In this case over top of the carbon hood they look so sick! The see through parts are crazyyyy
It's nice seeing it getting restored, do you plan on keeping it or giving it back down the line 😂 id personally keep it 😂
Awesome Car!!! Really glad to see it put back on the road!!!
damn that's a 'FIRE' carbon hood
aye man, i appreciate you too. Thanks for all the awesome content man-THIS wouldnt be possible at all without you;) Love ya man-take care and be safe:)
damn that hood is dope as hell i didnt even know you could do transparency and the flames look insane his taping it crazy
I am normally a jet black only when it comes to cars, but that bonnet is crazy. Love it
@15:00 screw driver because of an "oring" dsigned gasket. due to covers being mounted parallell to the ground. no issue. screw cant over tighten. but the exhaust covers are mounted at a 48 deg angel to the ground, which causes oil to pool up along the sealing edge of the cover, so a high temp oil proof gasket maker was used with bolts to ensure proper seal. odd but logical.
The solenoid you were asking about is either a imrc control valve or a purge valve
Hey thank you for your channel you have great content very informative and entertaining I’m in my 60’s and have a k swap civic and you motivate me to keep fixing it up, look forward for your videos twice a week 👍🏽❤
Hell yeah Mike! I love watching you pull all the junk out for deleting 😂 its highly satisfying! Also is that all new hardwars on the valve covers? Nice touch 100%
Heyyy did you have the powdercoat shop remove the baffles before sanding. Sometimes, the sand gets stuck in there, and then it'll get in your engine, wear out the bearings and rings.
Other than that, I'm glad to see someone else working on VGs. I need to get back to filming my Z 😆
add these to your arsenal. they really come in handy for the hard to reach bolts.
ATD Tools 99650 XL Ratcheting Wrench Set
That Carbon hood looks so mint, loving your builds dude
First time I have seen someone use the rear hole for the hood prop. No one at dealer new about that feature. I bought my Z new in 1996 and I just notice this feature myself.
That hood is so tight. The Z is getting mega hype.
I recommend getting a JIS ( Japanese Industry standard) screw driver for the future to help with the screws. The have a slightly different head than a Phillips head.
Awesome job dude! 💪
I had someone teach me with the little screws that are tight and have a tendency to strip. It's best to try and tighten the screw some more before loosening.
cette z32 avec son VG30DETT sera magnifique , une fois sa restauration finie- Force à toi, pour le travail de qualité effectué
13:20, my MX3 v6 has got something similiar, some have to do with the evap system, but.. there are some that are used in controlling the variable intake
That was one of the coolest videos with him man
