- The @Honda HR-V may have arrived a little late to the subcompact crossover party, but, with Honda’s wealth of knowledge on how to load lots of space and features into small packages, when it finally did arrive for 2016, it instantly became a top pick among small utes. Well now, a 2nd generation HR-V arrives with even bigger expectations. #Honda #HondaHRV #HRV

We traded a 2020 EX-L for a 2023 EX-L a month ago. It is still slow although I noticed that once the engine warms up, acceleration is better. Overall, it is vastly better than the previous model. The road noise on the old one was off the charts. This one is much quieter and smoother.
Thanks for the comparison.
I love MotorWeek reviews! New car journalists have become just a bunch of complainers that don’t do anything except read a spread sheet and nit-pick or complain about everything so they can seem like they know something. I miss the old-school car journalists like those from MotorWeek that try to highlight why a new car is good, not just why they are bad.
My same thoughts exactly. Motorweek deserves more subscribers
The Dough Demuro type of reviewers are just awful. Any idiot these days can turn on a camera and call himself a car reviewer. MotorWeek are the REAL professionals.

The HRV should have the 1.5T and the CRV should have the 2.0T. Otherwise I appreciate Honda’s effort. I can tell that they are really trying to address criticism and make solid, affordable vehicles with good styling.
My mom has a first gen HR-V and loves it, glad to see it grow!
3 weeks ago, a drunk driver crossed over several lanes of traffic and hit my friend head-on in her 2016 Honda HR-V. Thankfully she got out with only a few bruises from the airbag. She just picked up her new 2023 HR-V a couple days ago. I think Honda did an amazing job on these vehicles.
how does she like the new size compared to the 2016? hr-v strikes me as an actual suv now instead of a crossover
@@wanderfool_ She likes it a lot better. She said she still views it as a car, not an SUV.
@@wanderfool_my wife finished the lease on a ‘19 HR-V, and they got her into a ‘23 HR-V Sport. Definitely a bigger vehicle with now a 2.0 L i4. Acceleration is not the greatest for 0 - 60 times but then most people in this market aren’t looking at that. Once you get up to highway speeds, you’re fine. Passing slower vehicles is not a problem.
@@carlovanrijk4039 good info. thank you so much!!
Just got my 23 EX-L. Traded in a 2020 EX. The 23 is very much improved. I ordered it on October 12 and picked it up December 20
It appears Honda hates their 1.5T. Every product that greatly needs it doesn't have it... this thing NEEDS it. I couldn't imagine owning this thing in Colorado.
They can skip the 1.5 and just give it a hybrid variant. It’ll be more reliable than a turbo engine too.
@@tails300 - Both are a complicated, jumbled mess that will be difficult to repair.
@@mikea5205 anyone who knows how Honda and Toyota hybrids work knows that they’re nowhere near as complex as their gas counterparts, and are more reliable too (which is a feat of itself because the regular models are already fairly reliable).
@@tails300 this is an inaccurate statement about the hybrid being less complex than their gas only counterparts. This is where I throw in the BS flag. There's additional parts with hybrid systems so of course they are more complex. There's the drive battery, electric motors, the inverter, the power split device that acts as a transmission, some have a separate cooling system, on top of the gas engine components. I will agree that they are no less reliable than the gas only counterpart, but hybrid systems of any variety are not simple systems that just anyone can work on and repair.
@@foxtrot685 not inaccurate in the least. Gas only cars still have hundreds more moving parts in their CVTs and conventional automatics. Then you have your extra components like starter motors (one of the electric motors acts as your starter motor on a hybrid and far more robust), water pumps, ac compressors, serpentine belts which drive said accessories (electrified on hybrids). Torque converters which connect the transmission to the engine, valve bodies with many shift solenoids also contained inside the transmission. So no hybrids don’t have more components than gas cars do, even accounting for the hybrid components.
The 10.8 seconds 0-60 time is definitely slow, but that’s almost its only weak point. (I think Honda could have improved the cargo space, but that’s my only other nitpick).
The 113 ft 60-0 stopping distance is excellent. They didn’t mention it in this video, but it also has a really tight turning circle of 35.1 ft, for great parking ability.
This thing has really good bones.
If Honda can bring in a Touring model with the 1.5 turbo or a strong hybrid, this would be a no-brainer for anyone who doesn’t need a huge cargo space.
This ia a dangerously slow vehicle. Why wouldn’t Honda put the 1.5 turbo in it. Top it off with a cvt and your looking to die on a highway!
@@BEE5HEMIPALAZ I test drove this in Sport FWD trim. It did not feel slow. It was not fast, but its speed was adequate.
The AWD EX-L they are testing in this video is a bit heavier, so will be a bit slower. But I doubt it’s dangerously slow.
Way too slow. Honda could do a lot better. They apparently sell this in Europe with a 1.5T under the Acura badge. Too bad we only get the 2.0NA, which has a very low amount of torque at 138 ft-lb, which is not nearly enough for an AWD vehicle. Buyers should look at the Mazda CX50, or the Toyota Corolla Cross which both offer more power even with the base engines.
@L W why do people need to get to 60 in 6 seconds or 8seconds. Most of the time you accelerate it’s from a stop light or out the driveway. Honestly I own one for months now and it is no issue even in the highway. The other things about this car that are good far outweighs the 10 seconds acceleration. The interior and exterior is quality. The tech is crazy good. Very Easy to drive. It’s a honda and will last. Love the wireless apple carplay which is not the same in every car; honda did it very well. The 9 inch touchscreen is smooth and effortless…. I could go on and on.
@@digitaldoc100 the slow part is way overstated.
Well, John was very polite about it, but there's no other way of saying, it is very slow for modern standards. However, it is a very good car with lots of space, nice interior, but I can't fathom how Honda forgot rear A/C vents and armrest.
I miss the manual HR-Vs. I got to test drive one back in 2017. Fun to drive!
The fact that you could even get the stick on the EX and not just the base model was awesome. Kinda made up for the fact you couldn't get the stick with AWD
Bring back the Element and I'll buy one.
0 - 60 in 10 1/2 seconds? That’s on a prepped surface too…horrible. This needs the 1.5T
The 0-60 time is almost dangerous, you literally cannot get away from anyone.
Great looking vehicle & upgrade from its predecessor! 9.5/10
For all those complaining that it is slow. Try driving an 1988 ford ranger with a tired engine. My ranger could not max out its 85mph speedo. This thing is just fine.
I didn't know so many people drag raced small suv's. Can't wait to see some in the next Fast and Furious 11 Soccer Moms Revenge...
Yeah I've never seen comments so crazy about a 0-60 time in a car that's not made to drive like an STI.
@@MrModz88 we don't want to drag race, we just don't want to make a right turn and not have an 18 wheeler up our ass. My vehicle is 15 years old and can get to 60 in 6 seconds. Why can't these modern ones do that. Bullshit and they cost more than what i paid for mine.
I saw one today and I was thrown off I thought it was a CRV. I saw the badging and it said HRV. I was like damn they really changed up the look. I don't know how I feel about the new look. I liked the old look I was hoping they improved on the look and not completely change it. I feel like Hondas new design are a little more refined and less sporty looking which is fine.
I hated the older design.
This is much improved in styling.
I'm not a fan. The previous model looked more sporty. This look fresh, but plain. Interior is okay.
Honda should have put the 1.5 turbo in this thing !
The 1.5 turbo is rife with issues and is really finicky.
But hey if you want that boat anchor pulling you along go ahead and buy a crv.
@@BigWheel.100% correct. The Honda 1.5T is the worst engine Honda ever made. Oil dilution and blown head gasket issues. Look it up, it's a horrific scene.
The asian and eu version is the real new version of the hrv… they kept the hidden rear door handle, magic seats and installed a turbo engine
I have an old Corolla that does 0-60 in the 9 second range and I can just about keep up with traffic. 10.8 sec is unacceptably slow imo!
@@porschefanatic1049 it was already on insurify's list of top 10 at-fault accident vehicles
Dangerously slow is funny! If you are worried about speed what are you looking at a vehicle like this for. I test drove one today and it had plenty of power for what it is and had no problem getting up to freeway speeds. If you can't drive this vehicle safely the way it is the problem isn't the vehicle...
I think the 3 cylinder Geo Metro shitebox was faster than this back in the early 90's. Can you imagine being behind one of these trying to merge on the freeway. Doesn't matter if you are in a Ferrari, everyone behind it is in danger.
Yeah, and 27 MPG, so you're not getting anything for that slow performance. It's the worst of both worlds. Honda needs to do better on a brand new car.
@@m8sandman it very much depends where you live and have to drive. If you live in less developed rural area and have to pull onto a 55 mph road without an actual onramp, slow is dangerous. If you live in a city with all the traffic control devices and infrastruture, usually it doesnt matter. Again, this car's drivers caused a disproportionate amount of accidents, something is going wrong. Just because you personally can drive it safely where you live doesnt mean everyone who takes it on a test drive around town will be prepared for highway passing once they actually commute with the car
Why does the US get the Chinese market HR-V? All other markets (Europe/Australia/Asia except China) get the Global/Japanese RV model.
Forgot to mention it has no rear vents , USB or center armrest/ cupholder. Through in the anemic engine and poor fuel economy. All for 30k plus dealer markup - no thanks!
I think it has good bones, it just needs a lil tweaking, like adding a sport, hybrid & turbo options to their lineup.
In fact they offered the 1.5l turbo option in China and named it ZRV
No turbo engines are crap, they will never out last a natural aspirated engine.
@Lunchbox LMAO yeah if you want your engine to last forever don't get a turbo.
@@kencai6803 Turbos are junk
@@hnnotyy For long term reliability, yes it could be a junk, but in terms of power? I don't think so, this new HRV just way slower than it should, if its 0-60 time is under 10 sec then it is acceptable considering its class and positioning. But over 11s average? They do need hybrid powertrain or the the turbo option they offer in Asia to boost up its speed.
Car and Driver got 0-60 in 9.4 seconds for a HR-V EX-L AWD. Seems a lil bit of a decrepacy. Regardless, hopefully the upcoming hybrid version will help. In fairness, the 2.0L is a solid engine, known more for long life than performance.
The HRV isn't fast, this time is in line with my own measurement from 0 to 100kmh, 11.1 seconds, I remember Redline reviews got like 10.9 seconds, I don't know how C&D did it.
Car and Driver does a rolling start.
@@brycmtthw
No, they test from a stop. They're just also known for abusing the cars they get for the best times. They probably brake torque it in sport mode with traction off and only a few gallons of gas in the tank.
I bought one and love it.
It’s not too slow?
@@fleiteae Not really. I mean it is just an HR-V. They have never been powerful.
I love mine. on a trip I got 37.6 miles per gallon. I don't have any problem merging or passing on the highway.
@@robertmany9190 on the way home from the dealer It indicated 38mpg. Mine is awd and after 500 miles It is still indicating 34mpg. I drive all country roads around 55mph but still impressive and it rides nice too.
My friends friend just got one of these. Looked good in person but it's 3 seconds slower to 60 than my 21 Crosstrek Sport
I like that front bumper
As an owner of a 2022 Mazda CX-30 I must say this car looks very familiar to me...
Laughing at the speedway drive. 10.8 secs. It's like grandma
I love everything about this, except the dangerously slow acceleration. You’ll be a hazard on the highways
That’s a good 0-60 time, in 1995!
It’s like a modern first gen crv
@@taylordooley3765 Yeah, that actually seems about right.
I'm fine with it. Hopefully a bunch of lead-foot jaggoffs buy this. That way they're stuck behind me.
Lol
Honda should have type R version for their suv line up
Too slow for me. Add the 1.5L Turbo and Honda will have a winner here.
My ‘22 hrv I bought 1 1/2 years ago lives up to the 34mpg highway rating and don’t think the new one is worth it I can’t imagine what the price mark up is nowadays
Just a quick comparison my 2015 Honda CRV EX-L AWD is almost identical size to this 2023 Honda HRV EX-L AWD. I don't understand why they chose to put this anemic 2.0L 4 cylinder engine in the 2023 HRV and it is only rated 25/30 and 27 combined. My 2015 CRV has a 2.4L 4 cylinder is much quicker to 60 mph (8.5 sec.) and was rated at 26/32 and 28 combined. Seems like a step back in terms of performance and economy. Honda is probably scared to put a better engine in the HRV afraid it will eat into the CRV sales and of course the CRV is more expensive therefore more profitable. It took Subaru a long time to finally put a larger more powerful engine in the Crosstrek and it gets better economy than the base 2.0L engine. Wake up Honda!
No power lift gate is a deal breaker for me. The Hyundai Tucson has had this feature for years.
I had one but traded it in because of the lack of power. Other than that it was a good car but couldn’t get past the lack of power and the CVT
I'm assuming that since it uses the same engine from the Civic 2.0 it will be able to have the same bolt ons while still being a competed and reliable daily commuter. For the price and features you get Honda caught the big three with there pants down and this is coming from a Ford guy.
Give me a 3rd pedal and a stick plus a little more gumption in the drivetrain and, for me, it's a no-brainer! Even a DCT is preferable to a party-pooping CVT.
great design. also great commentary unlike many that hype. is selling well, already.
Holy crap, that's slow acceleration by modern standards.
It’s slow by 1990’s standards.
@@Heffelz8 By 90s standards? No it’s not.
@@sleeksilver lol ok.
@@sleeksilver actually it is. My 89 accord SE-i sedan with a 5 speed manual does it in a bit over 9 seconds, and my 93 accord SE does it in 8.4. And that's 30 year old technology.
Shocked that they put such a turd of an engine in there. This needs 200hp to be competitive.
Well not for me: 138lbfttorque/3300lbs unladen and a cvt...but interior has much improved. Having owned two hondas with "adequate" power: you have to rev it a lot to get it to go....
It's a CVT so you just let it flog out like a boat engine.
That’s why I left Honda and will never come back until they bring a automatic transmission or a hybrid system.
Hopefully they improved the crash worthiness especially the failed side crash test of the last model.
So…… no mention of what factory warranty is????
Really nice but to slow on high mountains with two passengers . Not for me.
Without sound, the presentation is better, the conclusions of the journalist and the picture you are looking at speak of two different cars
HAD ONE UNDERPOWED
Front fascia reminds me of Ford Escape
Uses gas moderately efficiently for a slow accelerating vehicle, might as well buy a CX-5 with a regular 6 speed transmission for the same cargo capacities , exterior dimensions & more fun .
I think Honda is missing the best of HR-V redesign in the other markets: the 1.5L turbo motor that delivers 20 more HP. The redesigned 2022 HR-V of European, Asian and South American market still based in the Fit platform, but more fun than dull underpowered 2023 American market new model. With 1.5 turbo motor from Civic would be better competitor to VW Taos and closer to Mazda CX 30 turbo.
It’s the best looking among kona seltos cx30 amd etc…
Over 10 seconds 0-60?
Not for me. I can just imagine how slow it'll be loaded down with stuff in the back and a handful of adults up-front. Won't be able to get out of its own way fast enough. I know what it's like having to rely on a slow vehicle as a daily commuter. Quite a lot of those back in 1998. In 2023, no excuse for that. Certainly not for $30K as the _Starting_ Price if you want an AWD vehicle that size.
Just needs a manual transmission and little more power. In the AWD model it would be nice if it didn’t have a CVT. Since Honda can’t make a regular transmission anymore a manual option would be a alternative
I think Honda should make a 280hp hrv type R hahaha ( they never will) but hey Hyundai went nuts and made an almost 290hp kona N … no one will ever buy it or need it in this market.. but why not lol
You mean to tell me, that my 2012 Scion xB with 158hp 162ft pounds of trq which has 69.9 cubic feet of room and does 16.2 in the 1/4 and 7.9 0 to 60 with a four speed automatic ( no cvt ) and NO oil consumption issues is better than this brand new Honda? I guess so.
As the owner of a vehicle with a very similar engine, this car would perform appreciably better if mated to a manual transmission. At least my 5-speed does compared to the CVT version other owners complain about 😉 If Honda offers the Civic in a manual they could offer the HR-V as well...
While I like (well-designed) manual transmissions, almost no one wants a manual trans in their CUV.
No magic versatile folding seats??? What happened Honda?
So many sheep here who never test drive and only parrots other twitch. I've owned my 2023 HRV EX-L AWD since October and am really enjoying it.
Maybe it can be tuned
Also the CD player will be missed. Last model had a standard CD player in the LX.
It’s nice that it’s slow. If everything was fast then no one would buy the higher end vehicles.
Ditch the CVT, make it more powerful, then you have a decent driving experience
It doesn’t have to be decent. It just has to be good enough. This checks all the good enough boxes. Unfortunate but it’s going to be a money maker.
Those korean tires NEED to go, like wth??
Honda has a hit with this
Big mistake ditching the magic seat😢
I'd wish we had an HR-V SI.
Totally thought it was a Ford Escape in the thumbnail.
Has that 1999 Hyundai aesthetic.
I really thought Ford would have made more design changes when they refreshed the escape...
The exterior will have to grow on me, but I do like the interior though.
👏🏼
Boy, the writers are getting pretty edgy. A mother in law joke and lazy teenager reference in one episode! Can’t wait to hear what savagery comes next!
Why can't we just have the HR-V the rest of the world has with a nice front grill?
Considering the low power & small size, the MPG is surprisingly disappointing. A car like this should be able to average 35PMG on the highway. Heck, I average 32-33 MPG on the highway with my Buick LaCrosse, & that's got a 300HP V-6 engine.
Honda would've called this an Urban
I'll keep my Fit, thank you. Much better gas mileage, a far more versatile interior, and it handles like a go-kart.
The fit was a gem. What year is yours? I'm really saddened honda cut it here in N-A
That cvt drone was horrible.
MPG score is...lacking! Our stinger Gt line beats all measured performance metrics...in style!
A lot of engine issues with Kia and Hyundai. I'll take a Honda any day over either of those.
Mach E look a like
It's okay, what else can you say?
Only 27 mpg. That’s a poor number with the target market.
10.8 sec to 60, what are they thinking? The way people drive today that doesn't cut it .
Ugh. "Plenty of USBs!"
They're USB PORTS, not USBs.
The powertrain is the very heart of a vehicle. Honda's leaving off of both hybrid and turbo options for this brand new HR-V is surprising - almost unbelievable, IMO. I had been looking forward to purchasing one, but now I'm waiting to see reviews of Toyota's upcoming Corolla Cross Hybrid offering both more power and fuel economy.
It may be ugly and slow, but it's small!
All cars are more expensive now. HRV becomes CRV, and CRV becomes Pilot
Why is everyone in such a rush to get to 60 mph in under 3 seconds?? Seriously. No one in America has anywhere important to be anyways.
It really makes no sense everyone cares about that so much. Hundreds of comments crying about 0-60 times. As if you are racing your car every waking minute of the day.
The handle pillar was ugly good they got rid of it
The same power engine that in 1992.....🤬
Flash the ECM. Problem solved
CVT? No bueno!
158 horsepower in an SUV? GOOD LORD!
These things are awful in every way. I worked at a Honda dealer and we couldn’t give these things away. I think in the year I worked there we sold 4. Not only are they ugly, the interior is terrible and they are deathly slow. You’re better off spending your money on a Civic or upgrading to a CRV. This is the most redundant vehicle in Hondas line up.
Japan porshe
They need to ditch the CVT and use the ZF 9HP like Passport/Pilot, Odyssey and previous Gen CRV. That would liven up the 0-60.
Better Fit
I will never buy a Honda
Car again Honda of America do not care about the costumer,I got 2022 Hrv the seatbelt need to be replaced and Honda can’t provide my car is sitting down in the workshop for 6 months and maybe for ever coz I do not heard from them 😢 I open a case with them I call often but still the costumer manager is always on meeting
Soooooooooooo SLOW 😢
