I bought the Honda HR-V EX-L recently and just love it. After watching this video, I’m so glad I did! And this coming from a Toyota guy. This is my very first Honda ever. Great video guys!
I test drove both, the Honda HRV is leaps ahead of Toyota in build quality. I’ve owned Lexus and Toyota exclusively but the new Honda interior style and quality won me over. Just bought the 2024 Honda HRV, my first Honda ever. Toyota has work to do, the Walmart interior is a snooze.

It all leads to personal taste both are great brands. It just depends on your priorities. I prioritize more now on engine reliability, refinement on esthetics is just an option lol.
I also come from a Lexus only family and no way is Honda better. I traded in my fully loaded gen3 RX350 for a CC to save money during my long commute. Honda has a few soft-touch pieces, but that's it. Honda's interior is as cheap as it gets. The rear console's empty cubby with no USB ports is better than Toyota's rear A/C console? How? Honda did not change the seat design between the base and the sport model, how is that better? Hollow arm rest with horrible cup holders. For $1,800 more you can get a Nightshade over a HR-V Sport with a lot more features and an AWD hybrid system.
The Corolla Cross XLE AWD would be a better fit for this comparison, as it has a more equivalent 0-60 time to the HR-V with its 2.0L (169 hp). The XLE is about the same price as the HR-V EX-L, however the mpg is a substantial difference. HR-V is 25 city 30 highway, whereas CC is 31 city 33 highway (with a slightly faster 0-60 time). The XLE also adds a 7 inch digital gauge cluster, power driver seat & heated front seats, fully LED headlights, and dual zone climate control, equivalent to the HR-V. Some things that the Corolla Cross XLE has over the HR-V EX-L: -Ambient Lighting -Power Tailgate -Rear Seat Air Vents & USB Ports + Fold Down Armrest Not to mention, Honda has had a large amounts of recalls lately, and their brand trustworthiness is downfalling. The HR-V currently has a problem with the back glass randomly shattering with the rear defroster active, yet the Corolla Cross has proven to be the more reliable option. Personally, I would skip the HR-V mainly because of the lack of rear seat amenities and the very very slow powertrain, and get the Corolla Cross in either the XLE AWD or XSE Hybrid AWD trim.
I think I will be picking the Corolla Cross simply because of the Hybrid option! The MPG is uncomparable. I do like the upgraded trim and more futuristic looking aesthetic of the HR-V but it's a bummer they didn't bring the hybrids into the US market. Big fail there. As they said, we need more hybrid options on the market!
I’d say a gas Corolla Cross XLE is more comparable with the HR-V due to similar engines and equipment. The CC SE Hybrid ends up being a bit more expensive because of the electrified powertrain.
I bought a 23’ Corolla Cross XLE AWD a few months ago, after cross-shopping it against the HR-V. What swayed me away from the HR-V was I didn’t feel it was as valuable per $ against the CC. The HR-V not having a power liftgate, rear cup-holders, rear air-vents and less chargers on the top trim was a big problem for me. Why does Honda not care about passenger comfort? The CC offered more, so I went with that.
I don’t mind no power liftgate but yeah the HR-V not sure why they skipped on rear cup holders rear folding center armrests, AC vents and USB there’s not even a 12volt in the dash . Otherwise it’s a decent car
Guys, if you are going to buy an HR-V, beware of the current issue with the rear windshield. It could shatter at a random moment. So far, it has affected at least 300 people across the US.

I would enjoy both cars if I had them but I would choose the Corolla Cross due to the power advantage, extended cargo space, better speakers, and better gas mileage with the hybrid version. The HR-V does have a better looking exterior in my opinion.
Once the hybrid HR-V becomes available in the US you will find it has 8% less power than the Corolla Cross hybrid BUT a massive 41% more torque, which is why I would go with the Honda.

I would probably go with the Honda HRV but I am looking at neither as I would like to have a power lift gate in a new vehicle so I'm going to look at something else unless there can be an aftermarket lift installed.
It’s funny how they rate the hrv at 27 combined because I drive city in mine and we consistently get 33mpg but we drive conservatively. My 2024 accord is rated 37 highway or 33 combined and I get 39mpg combine. I think it depends on the driver lol
I just returned from test driving a 2025 HRV Sport (I was hoping to drive the EX-L, but there were none in stock) and the CC XLE. Both are very nice and have positive and negative issues. I wanted to see the CC Hybrid, but we were told that those have been very hard to come by. I'm divided on which one to choose as I have to get a new car this weekend. My 2019 HRV was hit from behind and deemed a loss.

Apparently 70+ MPG US combined. Maybe report back next refill. Also wanted the additional ground clearance and height, 63 years old... Getting in and out, the civic is brutal, compared to suburban and Silverado 4x4s here too...
We shouldn't have to choose between design and speed. It's the main thing that annoys me about the sub-compact class. And Honda is just being plain ol' greedy with remote start subscription requirement. That's INSANE.
@EyezPeepinIsh Honda's remote start isn't free for life. On the HRV, if you are near your car, you can hit the button on your fob. But if you want to access the full HomeLink remote start system when you're not near, you have to pay $110/year. Honda just started doing it, too. 🫤
Honda hrv gives you more car for the money. Toyota is you get what you pay for. They are built well. You can beat it, and it's hard to break. Both are dependable long-lasting cars. I bought the HRV. Nice of Honda to give you more car for the money. Personal choice
Just got one and upgraded from 22 civic - it’s the same acceleration as a civic sport 2022 due to same horsepower and engine. These people comparing have never test driven this car. Y’all have no idea what you’re talking about it accelerates perfectly fine, it’s not a damn race car. It’s a mini tank that is safe and reliable which is what most people look for in a car- go get the type R if you’re complaining about acceleration and HP lol - and older Honda may have been more power but the new 4 cylinders are so good and efficient they use less power compared to older Hondas. 😂
Corolla Cross has 1500 lb towing capacity HRV has no manufacturer towing rating. So to have a small jet ski you want to take to the lake with your AWD SUV you can’t with the Honda. Although you may find that some aftermarket retailers offer a hitch and wire harness for the HRV installing on vehicle and then taking to dealer for transmission (CVT) issues and they see a trailer hitch on car I’m should they will not honor warranty.
Kind of an apples to oranges comparison here, especially since you are comparing the highest trim Honda model to a mid level trim HYBRID Toyota. There is also a huge difference in the design and durability of the transmission in each car. A more honest comparison would be between the Honda and the Toyota non-hybrid XLE model. But if we stick with your comparison, I'll take the higher powered better mpg Toyota with the more sophisticated transmission every time.
Great objective review video Drew and Mason! I’ve researched some of the Honda models. Being a diehard Toyota fan I will gladly choose the Corolla Cross over the Honda. Just my personal opinion. I’ve trusted Toyota quality for a few years already! Now if Nissan came out with something comparable then maybe after owning the Nissan Altima SR for 9 or so months (for me personally it was an excellent alternative to the Camry). And that’s saying something coming from a “Toyota” owner! Thank you for sharing this with us! Mark in Iowa.
Cross is the one I would choose. The HR-V is just too slow. Some reviews say it takes over 10 seconds to reach 60mph. Not to mention the better gas mileage with the Cross hybrid.
I would purchase the Corolla Cross Hybrid. It is 5th Gen. (Rav4 is still at 4th gen) and has great MPG. I currenly have a CRV Hybrid and likely would go for Rav4 Hybrid when it gets to 5th Gen. but the Corolla Cross Hybrid is a great vehicle with a great power train.
This was a good, clever video guys. The fact that you bring in the Toyota Corolla Cross-Hybrid version against Honda's HR-V already shows who wins the competition despite any shortcomings the Toyota may have. Affordability dictates I'm trying to save myself as much money as possible. So then, I'm not sure why Honda wouldn't make it a hybrid like Toyota does here in the US. Looks, comfort, and power alone are not where the customers are going when buying this class of vehicles and a 40+ MPG on an affordable SUV like these is a no brainer! Toyota Corolla Cross all the way brother!!
I have a 2024 Honda Hrv. Only have car for 2 weeks and this car does not have fuel economy. Also this vehicle vibrates 40 to 70 mph. Taking car to dealership for the 4th and last time to figure out what the issue is . Anyone else expressed this issue ?
Not sure why Honda does not offer the 2.0 Hybrid engine that's in the Accord & CRV and now Civic..I think it would be a great option to have the same hybrid system in 4 different sizes.
Well I prefer a reliable, and spacious car with one of the best safety features. I drive so I can go to my destination safely and comfortable, not to speed up or race.
Economy and power already built in if I want more luxury I can add it to the corolla but I can’t add more power and make it more economical on the Honda at least for this 2024! So Toyo wins hands down
hrv has way more space. im 5'11 and can sit in the passengers seats with 4 inches of knee space from the front seats and tall head space not skimming my hair like other crossovers.
The HRV is a reliable fuel efficient Japanese vehicle... speed is not the goal, reliability is. I find that mine has appropriate acceleration... for what it is. When I want speed, I turn to my 991.1S!
@CarConfections Oh, okay, so it's not really an equal comparison. Like equal model levels. I was also reading comments on the video. I was about to tell my friend someone screwed her over because her HRV is basic and missing many features.
MAJOR technical advantage of the HRV engine.... NO Direct injection! There is nothing more reliable than a multi-port fuel injection, non-turbo, 4 cylinder Honda! 90s SOLID proven technology. Now, with respect to the CVT, obviously this is the weakness for both. Toyota tries to improve their CVT by adding a traditional first gear before handing off to the CVT. The Toytota has Direct Injection and attempts to solve the intake valve clogging problem and reliability issues by ALSO having multi-port fuel injectors. (Eight injectors, instead of four, means more moving parts and injectors to fail or clog.) This sounds like a lot of problems.... new non-proven technology. The only problem that I see with the HRV is that it is manufactured and assembled in Mexico. To be exact, Celaya, Mexico. One of the most dangerous cities in the World. I can't help to think of the low wages paid to these workers in Mexico and their dedication, or lack of, to quality in such a dangerous city. Time will tell. I would rather have an American made Honda HRV, if it existed for us in the US.
Keep in mind the 2 liter Corolla engine is identical to the 2.5 liter Camry/RAV4 engine except for size. All have direct injection and port injection. Toyota must believe in it
No doubt it probably works well... but why have eight injectors when you only need four? Sadly, with more moving wear parts, Toyota's best reliability days are behind us. Especially with CVTs. @@johnkonde1975
@@JimN696 You're one of the only people I've seen online that know this. I've had so many people claim the hybrid is just a CVT. Toyota has done a terrible job explaining that an eCVT is NOT a CVT!

Toyota requires the remote start subscription. Honda is free for life.
@EyezPeepinIsh Honda's remote start isn't free for life. On the HRV, if you are near your car, you can hit the button on your fob. But if you want to access the full HomeLink remote start system when you're not near, you have to pay $110/year. Honda just started doing it, too. 🫤
I'd take the CC hybrid.
I test drove the Honda. The front seats of the Honda are incredibly uncomfortable. It's a no-go based on that alone.
Can’t wait for the HRV to go hybrid in the US
Kind of an apples to oranges comparison here, especially since you are comparing the highest trim Honda model to a mid level trim HYBRID Toyota. There is also a huge difference in the design and durability of the transmission in each car.
A more honest comparison would be between the Honda and the Toyota non-hybrid XLE model.
But if we stick with your comparison, I'll take the higher powered better mpg Toyota with the more sophisticated transmission every time.
The Honda HRV is the better option in my opinion 💯👌🏽
Not to mention the better gas mileage with the Cross hybrid.
yeah hopefully, when the Civic Hybrid comes out, Honda will put the same hybrid in the HR-V
Fantastic comparison as always!😸
Thanks and have a great week!
I have a 2024 Honda Hrv. Only have car for 2 weeks and this car does not have fuel economy. Also this vehicle vibrates 40 to 70 mph. Taking car to dealership for the 4th and last time to figure out what the issue is . Anyone else expressed this issue ?
proly a lemon just file a complaint and get a swap.
Would have preferred to natural engine comparisons. Whats the standard engine in the cross? How does it to 0-60?
My hybrid Corolla cross does 57 mpg at the moment.
Honda seems like a slug at 10 seconds to 60mph.
A lot to forgo to have a nice interior
Not sure why Honda does not offer the 2.0 Hybrid engine that's in the Accord & CRV and now Civic..I think it would be a great option to have the same hybrid system in 4 different sizes.
0-60 times going uphill.........
No punches pulled 😉😉😉😉😉😇
Subaru CrossTrek for safety, its AWD and comfy seats.
Thank you Car Confessions.
I got the Honda Hrv last month. It's a great car for the price and I always somehow feel like it looks like a Jaguar E Pace..😄
TheTopher said it took him almost 13 seconds to do zero to 60, the HRV is too slow!!!
Well I prefer a reliable, and spacious car with one of the best safety features. I drive so I can go to my destination safely and comfortable, not to speed up or race.
Great Review.
Thanks!
The Toyota Have Roof Rack Mounting ability feels important, mounting on the HR-V requires frame mounts which are not great for the car
Most of the rear windshield glass breaks have been in San Fran, Portland, Oakland and Seattle. Coincidence? Maybe
Economy and power already built in if I want more luxury I can add it to the corolla but I can’t add more power and make it more economical on the Honda at least for this 2024! So Toyo wins hands down
Toyota is the world’s biggest and number 1 car maker. No other companies can come close to King Toyota 👍
Hey Car Confections, What About You Guys Compare Sometime A 2024 Toyot RAV4 To A 2024 4Runner!
Which one is more comfortable for a tall person who's driving ?????
hrv has way more space. im 5'11 and can sit in the passengers seats with 4 inches of knee space from the front seats and tall head space not skimming my hair like other crossovers.
A hybrid vs conventional? +5 just for that!
I ended up going with the Honda Hr-V, even though it's this channels top pick, you will feel like you're compromising on some essentials areas.
Honda is better without a DI engine. Better reliability.
It’s too slow
The HRV is a reliable fuel efficient Japanese vehicle... speed is not the goal, reliability is. I find that mine has appropriate acceleration... for what it is. When I want speed, I turn to my 991.1S!
@@johnkonde1975 no it's not.
@@azkaktus TheTopher, a legendary car reviewer said so, ask him yourself
Wait, remote start isn't on all Honda HRVs. Did I miss something? Heated seats are also not standard. The LX doesn't have Heated seats.
This is the Sport trim
@CarConfections Oh, okay, so it's not really an equal comparison. Like equal model levels. I was also reading comments on the video. I was about to tell my friend someone screwed her over because her HRV is basic and missing many features.
Honda won us over because of the balance feel and visibility
havent had a honda since a 91 accord. Cant wait to test drive the hrv. Saw it on the freeway once and was like, I need that
the HR-V does not offer any kind of 4WD option. So here the conversation stops for quite a few people, including me of course.
I love my 23 hrv.
Carconfections didn't work in the Indy area for a Corolla Cross Hybrid.
I hope that Honda fixes that safety
recall taken care of with the seatbelts!
Do either of these have CVT transmissions??
Both have them, the Toyota a eCVT and Honda a CVT
Toyota because it is hybrid and better sound isolation
HR-V when Hybrid becomes available is 2025 as it’s already available in Europe.
Accelleration?
I test drove BOTH today the corolla Cross is all plastic and looks really cheap inside it’s a tops between the HRV sport and Mazda cx 3
Different transmission in the CCHybrid:
ECVT no belts, no chains; a totally different design using planetary gears.
@@JimN696 You're one of the only people I've seen online that know this. I've had so many people claim the hybrid is just a CVT. Toyota has done a terrible job explaining that an eCVT is NOT a CVT!
I will wait for 2025 Honda HRV see if it gets better, hopefully Honda won't cut corners as usual
Corolla cross basic model cost about 24k.. no need to get the best.. I don’t like hybrids as is 🤦🤦🤦
HR-V for me!
Sound Like a Honda FanBoy!!! Cros Upper Trim has all the differences an better
Both will disappoint at the end of the day, especially the Toyota. There's no arguing that.
Honda never disappoints
Tell that to the people with the 1.5 Turbo that have blown head gaskets and ruined engines and Turbos...I'm sure they are very disappointed.
I gotta say that intro song is 🔥
That honda is nice!
It looks like the Cross has a moon roof and the HR-v does not? I like the Honda.
You can't compare the high end Honda vs the mid range Toyota.
Japanese model of HRV called VEZEL or just HRV looks much better. Wonder why Honda would take the trouble to have 2 designs.
Honda CVT’S are far less reliable than Toyotas and the onda is way underpowered
Honda HR-V.
Honda anyday
Honda HR-V for me.
For the Honda...no hybrid equals no sale!
