It’s better than the Toyota CH-R for sure. Yet, the Honda HRV still has its place full of strong competition from the Hyundai Kona and Subaru Crosstrek
Yes of course the CVT brings the engine up to full RPM when you put the throttle pedal all the way down. That's the way you get maximum acceleration out of the vehicle. With a properly working CVT the engine RPMs will sit statue-still at near redline - until the vehicle speed reaches the speed you want. Then you take your foot off of the throttle pedal and the engine speed falls to the most efficient engine speed for the vehicle speed. Most people DO put the throttle to the floor when merging onto a limited access highway. At least, that's what anyone would any sense would do. This gives you the best chance of getting from the ramp into a driving lane, without forcing another driver to move over, slow down, or endure having her vehicle be smacked by your vehicle. Unless the limited access highway is nearly empty, this is the only way to merge.
@@gibby237 In 55 years, I have never merged onto a limited access highway using any other method, when rolling with a vehicle with an automatic transmission. While my own cars have always had low power-to-weight ratios, and most have had manual transmissions, I have done the same thing when rolling in over-powered Ford Crown Victoria monsters. In order for me to get my drivers license at age 17, my state required a driver's education course. This was the method they taught: put the pedal to the metal. The idea is to avoid disrupting the existing traffic on a crowded highway, getting into the rightmost lane on a jam-packed highway without forcing the vehicles that are already in the rightmost lane to slow down, or move to the left. Pedal to the metal. With a typical planetary gearset automatic transmissions with a torque converter, if you put the pedal to the metal the transmission suddenly drops down to the lowest possible gear. On low-traffic highways it might not be necessary, but when everyone is rolling along at maximum legal speed or more, and everyone is following the vehicle ahead of them at the shortest safe distance for their speed, or following even closer, this is the way to do it; it's the way that expert drivers recommend. I am not saying I am an expert driver. I am saying I follow their recommendations in this instance. Even with a manual transmission - I keep the vehicle in the lowest gear possible, and the widest throttle. On a highway with few vehicles and large distances between vehicles, it is not really necessary, but it is fun to do anyway. With a CVT you don't feel jolts from gear changes, like you do with a planetary gearset automatic, and you don't hear the engine gaining speed in each gear. These seem to be some of the things that cause people to feel that the vehicle is accelerating. Only the vehicle gains speed, not the engine. So with a CVT you get less of a SENSATION of accelerating.
I have a 2017 which I love but I cant understand why is there only one pocket holder in the back seat, and the glove box doesn't lock. Other than that I'm satisfied with it
This car has a design flaw. I bought a 2021 HRV on March1, 2021 and noticed an irritating piercing whistling noise on my way home when I cracked open any front window or moonroof. I brought it back to Huntington Honda twice and they said they test drove 2 other new HRVs and they made the same horrible noise. So I'm basically told this is normal on all HRVs. I wonder if Honda has a design flaw or whether Huntington Honda is sitting on a bad batch?
Did a RUclips search to figure out how to recalibrate the TPMS system in my Honda 2019 HR-V. Came upon this video and really enjoyed it. Micah was so right about the maneuvering ability of the car. This is a great city car for tight parking and getting into very very small garages typical in cities in the northeast. My street is a narrow, 2 side-of-the-street parallel parking, with cars right up to the edges of my garage. I can easily just turn right into my garage with no inching back and forth. I am far from a "car person" but my one requirement was this feature. This car is also my 6th Honda and I my first with an automatic transmission. I miss the manual transmission but the car is just GREAT.
I mean, I have a 07 Honda Fit Sport that I loved because of space and tight handling. I've never had an issue and was told that these were the next upgrade family to the Fit. I don't know, I might get this cuz my Fit is starting to fall apart and maybe go for the AWD version. Don't really care about all the speed talking that people do complain about; I just want something that can save me gas, keeps me safe, and helps me load up all my stuff while traveling.

F Hicks shit just got real. Seriously though I completely agree. If you were going to buy this car for it’s manual transmission and ... driving dynamics? ... i think you’d be better served looking somewhere else. Considering it has a TINY inline 4 that is moving around a high center of gravity subcompact crossover it makes absolutely no sense that the lack of a manual transmission in this car would be a deal breaker. People who drive this type of vehicle don’t care about the engine, the transmission, or the suspension. They just want to push a pedal and move forward reliably. The person who commented above this is the perfect target market/age group (no offense). Long story short don’t stress out that the manual is gone because it secretly did you a favor. It prevented you from buying a subcompact suv with a manual transmission that is slower (slower than the automatic), gets worse gas mileage, and body rolls like a barge around corners. Side note, people who hold on stubbornly to manual transmissions and act like they are the only way to enjoy driving confuse me. Your friend needs to move your car out of the driveway? They fuck up the clutch operation and accidentally smash into your car/garage because no one knows how to drive them anymore (happened to me). You need a DD after a night of partying? No one knows how to drive your car and even if you are the DD, the constant back and forth rocking that happens when you’re shifting is either going to make your friends puke on the way home (happened to me) or you’ll be driving home alone. You want to valet park your car so you and your date can go right to dinner? Adding more complexity that a valet needs to handle is a recipe for disaster and/or a ruined clutch (happened to me). My friends : is it faster than an automatic? No, it’s actually a second slower 0-60. Well ... it was cheaper then, right? Nah, it was almost the same for an automatic. Is it ... fun or something? Yeah it was at first, but during the 90% of driving where you’re in the city or commuting it’s sort of cumbersome especially when everyone around you has an automatic and rides your ass as you are shifting as fast as humanly possible. Is it more efficient or something? No, you get worse, sometimes much worse gas mileage than automatics. Why the hell did you buy that then? Because it’s fun on back roads sometimes.
CVTs worry me as far as longevity is concerned. Conversely, Honda manual transmissions are bullet-proof. I agree with Battossi. Give us a manual transmission option.
@@Windmill97 Couldn't agree more. ANYONE that knows anything about cars realizes that manual transmissions last forever because they are splash lubed versus the narrow channels of an automatic where things get choked off. Offer a manual option. These automatic CVTs are prone to issues. I cringe when I hear automatic CVT. Edit: I will say however that Toyota of course has done very well with the automatic CVT but its Toyota they know what they are doing and actually care about what they are doing versus Nissan which has the worst CVT! Hondas are ok with them but nothing can beat the durability of the manuals.
Buddy, you have no idea the full capability of my vehicle. It has a lot more tech than what you’re showing buddy. I managed to bypass Honda’s motion lock that was placed onto the hdmi feature of this vehicle. Now I can screen mirror my phone’s google maps or anything I want ( responsibly ),with detailed color satellite mode view onto my navigation screen. With high quality hdmi cords, that navigation can put out a lot of beautiful graphics. I bypassed Honda’s security protocol without any rewiring whatsoever. It had taken me two years to do find a backdoor, but I did it and it was worth every minute.
Worse than the low horsepower is the lack of torque which makes the HRV scary (too slow to get up to speed) for driving on high speed crowded highways in major metro areas, especially with hills.
Thank you I like the cvt who is flooring it all the time? I think in the six years I've had my patriot I've never floored it and haven't noticed any drone . I cross-shopped this with Subaru Crosstrek and liked the Subaru better. Its driver assist is better, interior layout was better, power was better and I wanted that AWD.
Jonathan A It doesn't matter what you've been in. The Crosstrek does, in fact, have more power, 141hp vs 152hp. Just because you didn't notice doesn't mean you can start debating facts.
@Jonathan A Everything in that segment of vehicle is slow, but it's all relative. If you look at Motor Trend and Car and Driver testing of the Crosstrek and the AWD version of the HR-V, the Crossteks average around half a second faster acceleration. You might not feel that kind of acceleration different, but is this a measurable difference that an average buyer would want noted. I don't know why you're trying to deny that.
@Jonathan A As mentioned, it's relative, but it's not insignificant or even unnoticeable. Your butt dyno is obviously broken. Our family (both immediate and extended) have both the Crosstrek Premium 6-speed and an HR-V AWD EX-L w/CVT. The Crosstrek has noticeably more usable power. Power is just slightly more than adequate for highway merges, but it's comfortably more than adequate for everything else thanks to greater mid-rage torque. The car never has trouble passing on highways, even in top gear, or zipping through city streets, and it did amazingly well on a trip to Colorado recently. It was actually pretty fun to drive. In comparison, the HR-V just doesn't perform as well. I know, the Crosstrek's 6-speed kind of makes the comparison unfair, but I've also driven the CVT Crosstrek, and I'd still say the same.
Excellent job, you Handsome Devil you. I love this Mid-cycle refresh, I think the Touring trim was a good move. ONLY thing I'd ask for is power liftgate, but that would bump up the price, and this puppy is meant to be attainable,

I guess I've been doing it wrong. I haven't had to floor my car to merge into traffic in 30 years. Not once.
I bought a 2021 HRV on March1, 2021 and
noticed an irritating piercing whistling noise on my way home when I
cracked open any front window or moonroof. I brought it back to
Huntington Honda twice and they said they test drove 2 other new HRVs
and they made the same horrible noise. So I'm basically told this is
normal on all HRVs. I wonder if Honda has a design flaw or whether
Huntington Honda is sitting on a bad batch?
Don't really care about all the speed talking that people do complain about; I just
want something that can save me gas, keeps me safe, and helps me load up all my stuff while traveling.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION ON THE HR-V, IS AWESOME, I LOVE MY 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION, HONDA #1💯👍💪
I wish my wife could drive it.
There is even a Micah Muzio Channel! Can’t wait for the Channel!
Here It Goes!
Couldn't give a damn about this car but
I'm watching just because Micah is so great at his Job :D
Jeezus christ honda, why NOT A MANUAL TRANSMISSION!? OR ELSE I WOULDVE BOUGHT THE DAMN THING UGH...
@@battosaijenkins946 Because not everyone wants a manual. I'm 61.....I want a dependable car with a decent amount of room and I'm tired of shifting my life away in traffic. Is this car a bit boring?....yep. Just what I want. If I wanted zoom-zoom car I would buy something else. Would I watch a Porsche 911 review and then complain about there not being enough room to seat 5? Hell no, that's not what that car is for. For the people who want power....and then more power.....watch Top Gear and save your money and buy (and constantly repair) a sports car.
As one other person noted below, couldn't care less about this vehicle but love the Micah reviews! Always entertaining!
The proper term is COULDN'T care less.
Thank you for posting the tork that's just as important as horsepower thank you.
I don't understand why Honda wouldn't have put in the newer, more powerful naturally aspirated 2.0 that is in the lighter LX Civic.
Lol. That would make it slower. A better option would be the 2.4L in the LX CR-V or the 1.5T in the Civic.
Because they'd rather not have competition for the Acura RDX i guess
Worse than the low horsepower is the lack of torque which makes the HRV scary (too slow to get up to speed) for driving on high speed crowded highways in major metro areas, especially with hills.
driving the hr-v in lawless houston highways daily, never had that experience.
Thank you I like the cvt who is flooring it all the time? I think in the six years I've had my patriot I've never floored it and haven't noticed any drone . I just drive normally around and get the good has millage, and I live on a mountain and going up it just pulls a little harder no clunky shifts. My f150 downshift twice it seems old fashioned and just like it's making a lot of extra noises.
Bankrate says this car 2018 version is #7 out of the top 7 least expensive cars to own for five years and they say its based on kbb data.

another review not mentioning seat adjustment for short drivers.
We were set on buying on of these, but everything other than the LX and Sports were majorly delayed due to plant flooding. Ended up getting a Crosstrek and are extremely happy with it.
Thank you for the info
Wow the facelifted version is not in the US yet?
I've got dodge dart right now and I'm debating on upgrading to this
I'm gonna buy this car just because the T-1000 said the front passenger leg room is OK.
You know what I would love? For just one of these reviewers to test the comfort of a car for short people.the average US woman is 5ft 4in tall. And cars are just not designed for us. Nor are they ever reviewed for us.
Can you customize the head rests? They look too big for the back seat and I worry about checking traffic in the rear view mirror.
They can be lowered
@@SympathyLilly Thank you for the information.
So What do you guys think is the go 2 of these 2 cars... Civic 19 EX Hatch or the HRV 19 EX 2WD? I had a Subaru Impreza 17 Sport with all Upgrades that was recently totaled... seeing how I spent a lot on that, looking for a lower priced equivalent since insurance wont give me anywhere near as much. Havent test drived the HRV but i have the Civic and like it. But i sat in the HRV and like the larger head room (Im 6'1). But it seems the Civic has more tech in it, And my Impreza spoiled me haha. Before my Impreza I had a Scion XB 08
Friend of mine bought a sport model I mean she’s small and for her it’s perfect, reliable and not bad looking in the orange color.
No blind spot monitoring or power tailgate
“Most drivers rarely use full throttle”
1. With that little power you will be!
2. Have you ever needed to pass or merge quickly?
They could have at least put in the 2.0 naturally aspirated engine in the base civic. This 1.8 is old and painfully slow.
From april in Poland we will have a 1.5 turbo 180 hp engine. It should be very fun car, especially with the best CVT in the market :) Unfortunately in Europe we don't have a 4x4 version :/
Here in Singapore, we only have the HRV, or also known as the Vezel, in 1.5L naturally aspirated engine flavour with no AWD option available... A hybrid variant is available with (again) a 1.5L engine...
@@marekuczynski5431 Gas in oil in those engines . risky . Many recalls and under the table deal with countries on that engine !! 1,5 Turbo gas engine is a dud ! Nice power BUT will never get you past 300K. KM's
@@javar888 my daily car is nowaday a Subaru XV with 2.0 CVT boxer engine 156hp. It is a very good car with a longlife engine but... I miss power in this car :/ I think that 1.5 turbo Honda engine with the fastest CVT in the market would suit the best to my XV/crosstrec. BTW. Honda Europe claims that problems with 1.5 turbo engine appeared only in a cold US states when drivers do only a short distances by this engine... In Europe, till now they don't see this kind of problems that you underline.
Marek Łuczyński I wish Subaru’s were more popular in Europe everyone drives a golf where I live so boring lol
Given a choice, I'd trade all the crap they stick on like lane departure warning, auto braking, that I don't want and trade that for 50 more horsepower.. You need at least 200 HP to maneuver on the roads safely. And keep the turbos as well.
Does it not have a back up camera?
Yes.
My problem with this category of vehicles (Sub-compact SUVs or Cross-overs) is that very few are available w/Front Wheel Drives in manual transmissions that offer good mpg. Automatic is BORING!!! I'm shopping around, but can't get excited enough to buy. It seems all vehicles these days are NOT exciting (only in EU I find attractive vehicles!). Toyota CH-R, Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V=automatic, Jeep Renegade...KIA Soul...Hyundai Kona(horrible mpg), etc., etc., etc.
Does the CR-V have an automatic hatch opener?
Reliability clout (not necessarily true reliability but definitely reputation), and possibly trunk space appears to be the only conceivable reason to get this over a Kona. B-b-b-b-b-b-booooriiiiiiiing! At least it’s better than the CH-R, by a long shot.
With the 6 speed manual I think you can get that reliability.
$30K Touring and no lumbar support? Honda seems to almost get it right here. Volume knob means little when you have volume controls on the steering wheel. I like Honda, but the CX3 looks like a better choice for the price. “Herv? Sigh
I cross-shopped this with Subaru Crosstrek and liked the Subaru better. Its driver assist is better, interior layout was better, power was better and I wanted that AWD.
@Jonathan A The Crosstrek does actually have more power.
Jonathan A It doesn't matter what you've been in. The Crosstrek does, in fact, have more power, 141hp vs 152hp. Just because you didn't notice doesn't mean you can start debating facts.
Stop being so sensative. You make inaccurate statements and argue with people, and then you get mad after being corrected.
What about a back up camera?
Ken Fergus all new cars have a back up camera it’s federal law
Really a good car for the price 👌

Great Review Of 2019 Honda HR-V 😀
Excellent job, you Handsome Devil you. I love this Mid-cycle refresh, I think the Touring trim was a good move. ONLY thing I'd ask for is power liftgate, but that would bump up the price, and this puppy is meant to be attainable,
Looks like the infotainment is still the old UI. Am I seeing that correctly?
This isn't nice to say, so I'll say it - Micah is KBB's best reviewer by a country mile. Lynn is ok and Micah's boss belongs behind a desk far away from cameras. KBB, can you hear me now? Read the comments if you need more input. About the HRV, at least it's not so ugly this time. But why would anyone buy this when you can get a used CRV or Kona or even a Fit for less and they're better at the same job.
Try sit at the back on long distance, I'll bet you'll be vomiting, it doesn't only bounce up and down but left right
Honda need to make the hrv a little bit longer with a little bit more ground clearance or just make a new suv that slots between the hrv and the crv. Preferred measurements 176 inch lenght, 7 inch ground clearance. I know it will be a hot seller.
The HR-V isn’t bad but It’s still super slow.

Yeah, much improved, but I also went for the larger, more powerful CRV with equal mpgs and better tech for not that much more money. The oil dilution thing is overblown. Most don't have that issue.
