In this speedy encapsulation I’ll note that the 2nd generation HR-V shares its basic structure with the latest Honda Civic. Versus the previous HR-V, shown here, the newest HR-V is 2.6” wider and 8.7” longer with 1.7” longer wheelbase.
Despite larger exterior dimensions, interior volume has actually dropped slightly in most trims. No worries, my ultra-average 5’ 10” body still fits in the back seat with ease as proven by this b-roll shot with a GoPro stuck to a window.
This is also a prime moment to mention that the cargo area holds a healthy 24.4 cu-ft of stuff and has a low lift over height. Insert quip here about how you’ll hurt your back dancing on TikTok instead of hoisting luggage into your HR-V. Topical reference, check.
As for price, the HR-V starts under $24k not including destination charges.
Continuing the powertrain details, the HR-V’s engine is a 2.0L unit producing 158 horsepower (158hp, 138 lb-ft) partnered with a continuously variable transmission. And now I’ll let the editor show the fuel economy numbers rather than having to describe them.
Moving to the continuously variable transmission aka the CVT, I could gain easy credibility by complaining about it. After all, CVTs have historically offered elastic propulsion feel with racing engine sounds. But the truth is that Honda’s CVTs work great. If you camouflaged the car and asked most drivers to identify the transmission, I doubt many could.
The previous HR-V had a comparatively simple torsion beam rear suspension, where here we have an independent rear suspension. It’s always hard to tell how much things have improved without a proper back-to-back comparison but on these Oregon roadways, ride quality is supple.
The HR-V drives with more sophistication than its price would suggest, lending itself to pleasing commutes. But is there any fun to be extracted along the way. There’s just a splash of sportiness here but the steering moves satisfying heft and predictability. The HR-V corners with confidence.
As expected, Eco mode feels a bit lethargic for my tastes so I’ll stick to Normal mode. And I’m only mentioning Snow mode right now so I can fill a few seconds with this Honda provided b-roll.
Hitting quickly on looks, I’m tempted to describe the new HR-V’s aesthetic in detail. But instead, I’ll do the lazy thing and just show 15 seconds of b-roll under the guise of “letting you make up your own mind”.
Say what you will about its looks, but the HR-V feels far more substantive than the budget-oriented first generation.
I like how each trim has its own character. See, here’s the Sport trim and here’s the EX-L. A big part of the HR-V’s elevated auro is the quality of its interior.
As noted, the MSRP for a base HR-V LX FWD is $23,650.
That price includes a 7” touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a 7” digital gauge cluster, single-zone automatic climate control, 10 airbags and an updated Honda Sensing suite of active driver assist tech.
Speaking of Honda Sensing, the lane keeping assist feature does an exceptional job keeping the vehicle in its lane. Meanwhile the adaptive cruise control is slow to adapt to changes in speed from the vehicle ahead.
Go baller with the fanciest EX-L AWD and the sum rises $28,950 but you’ll get a 9” infotainment screen, wireless smartphone connectivity, leather seats, a moonroof, and dual-zone climate control. Whichever trim you choose, budget an extra $1,245 in destination charges.
Notable HR-V competitors include the Toyota Corolla Cross, Chevy Blazer, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, VW Taos. Some of those vehicles are cheaper, more daringly styled, or offer a longer warranty but the HR-V responds with well-rounded excellence. Gen 1 was a pragmatic value but generation 2 adds upscale vibes to the equation with a sense of style that I’m warming up to.
The HR-V is practically designed, a pleasure to drive, and priced right. I suspect Honda is gonna sell a ton of them. And whether or not your closing point is a good one, end with a knowing glance.

Said “Blazer”, meant “Trailblazer”. 🤦♂️
We know what you meant Micah. Haha
@@crisantogarcia6646 Aw. You’re very kind. Cheers!
Micah! NOT YOU AGAIN! This is the second time I saw you review this HR-V! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
@@brianlee9233 yeah but it’s the first time you’ve seen me drive the HR-V. 😀
@@MicahMuzio Great review Micah but I disagree about the engine being peppy. Yes the 2023 HR-V has 17 more hp than the older model but it's also a lot heavier. TheTopher got almost 13 seconds in his zero to 60 test. Redline Reviews got over 11 seconds. That's unacceptable for merging and passing other vehicles.
I just bought one. I drove for an hour so far back home. Though it is only 158hp, I had no power issues passing on freeway. Semi truck started crossing the line into my lane - I was next to truck. Had no problem picking up speed and getting past truck
Such a difference this model year is. Glad to see Honda updated the tech and styling for this car since the last model looked really old and tired. I also appreciate Honda sticking with a traditional gear selector where you go up to park, and down to drive. So much nicer and more reliable than those stupid button gear selectors
I prefer shift-by-wire, and ether push buttons or a mono-stable (joystick style) gear selector. Push buttons and dial type gear selectors take up less space. I realize it's an unpopular position to take.
@@toronado455 I get they deciliter the space, but to me, they seem really unnecessary and are harder to use in tight space situations. My parents car was getting repaired so their loaner car had that feature, and it was awkward to use
@@colechapman3382 I totally get your point. I just find these big huge shifters to be completely unnecessary now. When there were actual mechanical linkages it made sense. But it's all electronic these days. A small monostable joystick can be used by feel quite easily.
We get a shift by wire in the UK.. we get 4 buttons@@toronado455
I've been watching Micah's reviews for like...10 years? Still love them all on here lol
Micah always has the best reviews. Love the personality and humor ❤️
This thing is an inch shorter than the current-gen CR-V. It’s a few inches longer than a 2019 Ford Escape. This isn’t a subcompact crossover anymore.
Probably still narrower
The old HRV was based on the Fit platform, thus it was a subcompact. The new HRV is based on the Civic platform, this it is a compact.
Great video Micah. I appreciate the “tutorial” on how to make a RUclips car review video. It is awesome. I learned a lot. Is it possible to request that you have a portion of your video maybe 5-10 seconds focus on headlights and taillights with difference between DRL’s and headlights? Please and thank you. Of course, don’t go out of your way to honor my request, stick to whatever works for you. Miss the elbow comfort index (ECE) test, some other reviewers measure extending Sun visors, the elbow comfort index should be trademarked with or without the squirrel.
The Asian/European design looks much better.
Seriously, this one looks like a blob!
why did they change it old white americans always think they could design a better car
Toyota Camry also had different designs in the US and Asia, and i as an Indonesian gotta admit thst the US Camry looks far better than our Asian counterpart...
Saw one today in real life and it looks great! A cross between an Acura and a Macan. So give it some Civic various levels of performance and that could be a category killer.
Interesting. So I like the styling, and the price. Other than that it seems like cars like this are plateauing a bit. I don’t like car payments so I drive older cars. I have a 13 Avalon, and a 10 Fusion Hybrid. The Fusion is a top trim model, and has just about everything this car offers on its top trim other than apple car play of course. I’m also surprised with the efficiency aspect of the new HR-V. Even my V6 Avalon gets close to those MPG figures. I just did a road trip from CA to AZ and I averaged 32 MPH there, and 30 mpg on the way back. I get roughly 22-24 in town as well. Being a car guy I’m always looking for a reason to upgrade, but it’s just hard to justify.
I learned a lot about making videos in this video. The car parts were also informative
Disappointed that the magic seat was discontinued
Thanks for the review. Are seat positions lower than the previous gen?
Great review Micah!😸
Thanks for the two-fer. A review and how to make ( fun) review . The HRV is now asking the question: why buy that when this is just as capable.
Why is there no dual climate controls for the backseat like come on Honda.
Holy Double Vision, Batman!! This HRV looks like a Ford Escape.
Thanks for your review.
Styling is Porsche Macan. At $30k for a loaded one it’s half the price! Seems like a great ride, nice review!
Micah, I think you meant the Trailblazer, not the Blazer. The Blazer is a midsize two-row SUV that competes with the Venza, Passport, Santa Fe, Grand Cherokee, and Edge. Great video nonetheless!
He did correct himself.
@@76carmel an hour after this comment.
There is an option for a grill upgrade via the builder and makes it look really good.
Exactly Euro spec Vezel inspired or upgraded bumper without crab-claw clutter. Also needs rear air and roof rails.
@Yes Sir Wish they had kept the Civic bumper
Haha this review was amazing.
I like the look. I do not like the tablet that looks like it was stuck on the dash as an afterthought. Blocks seeing out front window?
Problem is, when will they be plentiful? I see maybe 3 on a lot and marked up 5-6 K. Those dealers must get their share!
No EXL's in my area. No Sport either.
Honda needs to get the hybrid model out sooner than later. Getting mid-upper 20s and being underpowered with 10 second 0-60 times isn't what I want. Acura doesn't have an entry level CUV. I wonder if Acura would put their spin on it slot this below the RDX along side the new civic based Integra?
Just got a 2024 HRV. Why do cvt do weird jerks when lightly pressing on gas when going aroundb20-30mph
Do you have to get the highest trim to get a moon roof?
I wonder if its springs/shocks can be installed on the new Civic to raise the ride height, hence cushier ride over speed bumps.
I like the way you think. :3
Beautiful scenery. Where was this review shot? Pacific Northwest?
Stevenson, WA
This seems like Micah is about to quit KBB lol.
Can someone explain to me where the new HRV we saw few months ago is or was that never released cause this car looks different
For the second generation, the HR-V meant for the rest of the world is different. That soldiers on with the same platform as the fourth-generation GR Fit (which the US doesn't get, either, but is still sold in Japan and the UK).
The US gets what other countries call the ZR-V, and is based on the eleventh-generation (FL?) Civic's bones. This explains the difference in rear suspension (no torsion beam any more) and the increase in size.
This a beautiful model , I don’t get why Honda gets so much hate .
Wtf you smoking, this model looks 6-7 years ago
can you tell my if this 2L portal inject or direct inject
i really hope it portal inject
which model is this? It seems like it is not the base model because there is a sunroof
It’s nice but… I can’t help feels he sacrifice in economy is massive… doesn’t the civic get basically 40mpg hwy?
It's an SUV. What else do you expect? 🤦
Did we just get a car review and a video making tutorial?
Sure wish the fit were still offered. I really like the magic seats and tons of cupholders of my fit.
Same here. I have an 08 I would have loved upgrading but instead here I am looking at this model instead.
@@GrumpyBearRawr I’ll give the Hrv a look, but more $ and possibly less capable than the fit is a bummer. But maybe it’s just fine. In my mind Honda without a small car is just weird.
That was great review, thank you. Boo for the lack of the rear air vents, Corolla Cross has it even in the lowest trim.
Yep. Corolla Cross has rear air vents and a rear center arm rest with cupholders in all trims. 2023 HR-V has neither in any trim. Corolla Cross, gas and hybrid, is faster and more fuel efficient than this 2023 HR-V.
@@braetonwilson4296 Agree. I don’t care that much about the cupholders, but cool air is important for my dogs, especially now, when I live on the border of Mexico and Texas.
@@braetonwilson4296 Wrong.
Corolla Cross XLE has rear center armrest. L and LE are missing the rear center armrest.
@@webcomment8895 But at least you can have them, not like in this HR-V.
@@wtrdogg20 the highest model cost $37k CAD and no rear armrest and air vents, no power seats and power lift gate. Honda blows, so disappointed.
Another great review Micah, does this vehicle have that dreaded engine “start/stop” system? If so, is there a button to disable it, I can’t find this info anywhere, thanks
Idk about the new HrV but my CRV has a button so you can turn off the start/stop. I would think the new HRV would have the same feature.
@@starzzzy22 Thanks, from everything I researched it doesn’t look like it has that system. Tomorrow I’m looking at a Platinum white HR-V Sport so I’ll know more and report back in case anyone else was wondering.
Is the awd worth it?
Honda and Ford decide to swap front ends?
The new global HR-V looks better to me than the new American HR-V, but the interior of this car seems to have a better quality.
Hrv overseas got no sunroof
Nice recipe, I can do this as well. Here comes another journalist.
The Asian variant looks much better
Global variant*
Liked the side profile of the last year model
Decent small SUV, much better than the original. Btw, great video photography by Mike Danger!
I just bought mine 2 days ago, still waiting for the HRV to arrive. And today I feel Like I did a wrong purchase after own a Corolla 2022. I hope the HRV works for me 😏
Yes I miss magic seat too. Thank you
Why is Honda still not giving us panoramic sunroofs in their midsized SUV’s?!
I like the look of this, I saw some last year models with the wood trim interiors. Sure, there's an audience for that but I think it's a dated look.
24k MSRP? So my local dealerships will add 8-10k on top of that before anything else during the negotiation. Oy.
That Ford Escape/Escort/Expedition/Excavator/whatever front end HAS to go.
It’s not going anywhere. Honda settled on it. And I think it works. Much better than what Honda or Toyota usually does.
@@2004cyrus actually they refreshed the escape and ditched that front end
@@jacobyo99 true what about the Edge?
@@2004cyrus edge is being discontinued soon
@@jacobyo99 Ford is revealing a major refresh this year.
Honda looks best in its class
My Honda HRV sport just died on me, didn’t give me any signs of anything, how’s that possible?
I wonder if they'll offer a trailsport model.
Skamania Lodge has a great Sunday brunch.
How is this relevant without a Hybrid option?
I drove one a week ago and yes it is indeed peppy maybe even spirited it’s fine for normal commuting it’s not trying to be a sports car
everyone is looking at these videos expecting a 300hp hrv lol its crazy what some of these comments are saying lol. I drove one and it felt fine.
Interior dimensions are nearly identical in the HR-V and Civic hatchback.
I don’t like the front of this HRV. There’s something about the headlight and grill combo that doesn’t do it for me. It looks like a civic but I like the design better on a civic. Also I’m sad to see the magic seats completely gone from Honda’s line up. They were also so useful.
5:17 - holy HR-V..
Don’t buy this now, wait for an engine upgrade
Ahhh... no "magic" seats, add those in!
where is the fog Lights come on Honda
No stick shift?
The euro spec Vezel looks much nicer and incorporates CR-V vibes in the back light bar - looks more uniquely Honda. If they brought the Eurospec to the US, it would sell like crazy
Just looked it up, it actually doesn’t look better /: sorry to break it to you
nice but .. corolla cross has hybrid variant with more power and better fuel economy ..
Why is the American one so different from the rest of the world? (The front fascia)
Cure looking car. My Accord is dying so I might get one of these to save up for an Acura RDX down the road.
Hopefully this comes out in a hybrid.
Same. I can’t buy another ICE car. Either Hybrid or EV for the future!
Lol Micah is the best
Did you say it’s nearly 9 inches longer??? That’s a big difference. 9 inches is two thirds the difference between an Elantra and an Accord, or a Miata and a Golf. It’s putting it in a whole different size class. I wish people weren’t so obsessed with interior room without considering exterior, because our urban and suburban areas aren’t getting any less crowded…
that's what I've been saying. not a subcompact
Yea was shocked to hear it grew SO MUCH but interior "shrunk slightly"...
Completely different size class! It's as big as a rav4 and is nowhere near a subcompact. It's also not near as comfortable as one and gets worse MPG to boot. No rear air vents or rear cupholders available in any trim makes it not very family friendly at all despite being so big.
@@aqulajana8923 Exactly! Just doesn't make sense for such a dramatic size gain.. hmmmmm
I think most of that extra 9" is in the front clip, so this gen didn't gain anything in passenger or cargo room.
Honda shoulda put the 1.5T in sport trims at the very least. Its based on the civic after all... not like that drivetrain wont fit.
Their can be only ONE High…REVIEWER…He’s the best.
At first glance, I like it but I don't love it. I know I'm in the minority here, but really wish they'd given us the global version/Vezel instead. That said, looking to downsize from my CR-V and will likely be getting this in the next 2-3 years.
Yeah, the global model still offers the 1.5T as an option and is based on the fit still, so it has Magic Seat. I really doubt this thing needed to grow THIS much and lose some pretty neat features to gain new sales and stay relevant, the previous one was pretty popular especially post mid cycle update.
i'm gonna trade in my 2020 Hyundai Kona SEL to hrv, this looks lovely
Poor MPG and 0 - 60 unfortunately. Hopefully the hybrid comes soon. Corolla Cross Hybrid will take that market share.
Not to mention uggo as sin. I don't understand why Honda would spend billions of dollars developing a brand new car for a specific market when the obviously superior version already exist in Europe.
@@naughtysauce4323 Agreed, the European one seems so much better.
@@naughtysauce4323 Billions?! Don't be ignorant. The development of a brand new airplane like the A380 would be around $4-$5 billion, and that's seldom seen. In this case, coming from the Civic's new platform, this shouldn't be much money to put together.
It should go like that, but we would have to see what it is to actually drive the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Wouldn't be the first time an expected car falls short
@@disco.lemonade Other Markets outside North America already have it.
I was never a fan of the first-gen HR-V. I wanted to like it, but just couldn't. The second-gen HR-V looks a lot (to me) like a lifted hatchback Civic ... and that's not a bad thing at all. My son has a '22 Civic EX in the new Meteorite Grey and I REALLY like the looks of it.
Trailblazer bro
13 seconds to 60 in borderline dangerous. Imagine how long it will take with people in the car and/or cargo. Good luck trying to merge on a busy highway on short ramps.
You simply need to pray more effectively.
it’s more like 10 seconds
7:09 that's very interesting. I'm not sure I would have noticed.
No rear seat A/C vents is a stupid, deal-breaking oversight.
No fog light
WTF why is Honda making their cars look like a FORD escape? If the new CR-V looks anything like this I’m going back to JEEP!!!
The silent "R" makes it sound like you're saying H"I"V
7:29 😂 🆗🆒✅ But you missed an opportunity to demo the touch activated dome light. 😉
So I bought the 2021 Honda Civic hatchback sport and then a couple months late I see the 2022 and the Burst Blue or whatever color it's called just annoyed me... cus the dealer didn't tell me about that but then he is a dealer... he's all about himself, but that car is sweet looking... and now that I just watch the video of the HR-V video and I feel like kicking myself, this is sick too... dammit!!!
This car is too large for its supposed category now; it's exactly the same size as the Mazda CX-5 and only a couple of inches shorter than the RAV4! If I wanted a subcompact SUV, I'd get something the size of the Mazda CX-30, Corolla Cross or Subaru CrossTrek and if I wanted an SUV this size, I'd much sooner get the CX-5/RAV4, especially since I think the HR-V was hit with an ugly stick. Finally, the powertrain is dangerously weak for a car that size; 138 lb-ft of torque is even less than the smaller Corolla Cross which has 151 lb-ft yet is widely considered slow. What was Honda thinking??
I agree, that is dangerously low power for merging on the interstate.
Needs a hybrid!!!
why can't Honda offer at least a 6-speed auto instead of CVT?
Or better yet, a 6MT!
How bad is 0-60? Zrv overseas, hate having different name around the world
Didn't know Honda Sorento is a thing.
$1200 destination. I remember when it was $995 in the HRV
4:14 no magic seats less mpg and the average side profile is no sale for us
HRV finally looks attractive lol
That inert piece of plastic serving as the rear-seat middle console screams "You can't have nice things."
Now Honda, you know you could've put the 1.5 T in. Or at least give us an Hybrid option
...try to learn something from that reverse shift in philosophy...
Isn't it the 3rd generation of HRV?
No
Warning - there have been approximately 500 instances reported rear windshields blowing out with no warning. I will not be using my rear defogger again. That was a scary explosion.
That’s not very good gas Mileage compared to the Crosstrek Sport.
He’s sooo funny
Thanks man I’ve changed my mind , I’ve ordered Hyundai 2023 .. I’m gonna cancel it😅
