This video takes a detailed look at the last 20 years of the Chinese navy. It compares its buildup with the one of the US Navy over the same period. Just how did the US Navy got itself into a situation where the Chinese Navy overtook it not only in number of ships but also in overall tonnage per year? Watch the video to find out.

One reason for the fast expansion of the Chinese navy is that, because the entire Chinese military industry is state owned and self-sufficient, they can build ships at much lower costs than the US counterparts who rely on profit-driven private contractors. One Type 055 costs less than 1 billion USD while one Burke class destroyer costs ~2 billion, despite their comparable capabilities (I may even argue that Type 055 is slightly better, at least on paper). Not to mention the failed Zumwalt-class that costs a staggering $4.2 B per ship.

The strength of a country depends on its industrial strength and R&D investment. During World War II, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and bombed dozens of American destroyers, causing the United States to lose two-thirds of its warships. However, the industrial strength of the United States is 400 million tons of steel and the output value is four times that of Japan. The production of hundreds of warships in a few years has changed the war situation. . At present, China's industrial strength is more than 10 times that of the United States. The steel output value exceeds 1 billion tons. What the U.S. government is really afraid of is that China's industrial strength, manufacturing, depends on China in every aspect. And something worth to note is, China is not using its full capacity on militarize itself, as it doesn't involved in any war in the past years. Many people ignores the objective of PLA, China army aimed and designed to fight within Asia, while literally all US base that located in Asia are within the coverage of China mid-range rockets and missile. In term of space war, China has shown its capability on knocking down satellite as well. Fighting with China within Asia region doesn't make much sense and yet people still comparing US fleet with China Navy which have complete different objective in nature.

I lived for a while with a Chinese translator who worked for naval intelligence. They said that Chinese naval production is so much more efficient because, unlike the US navy, it is not regarded as a pork-barrel stimulus project. That's not to say that China doesn't have its fair share of graft and unnecessary spending, but in this case much more money actually goes into the boats themselves.

Purely because they both have such a capability to cause massive economic damage to eacthother, similar to the naval dynamics in the first world war. Also the actual economy will be thrown into depression if the 1 & 2 largest GDP countries mobilise for war, and it will likely be a bad outcome for all parties.

Carrier Groups are great if you want to control some inferior nation that cant defend itself on water, chip away their anti air / radar, then bomb as you like.

Obviously not going to share how the shadow went, but once we got into visual range we threw off the gloves and started a drag race for two days. We won. Not saying all US DDGs could have won, not saying all Renhai class ships would have lost. But it was pretty cool that our old as hell ship was able to keep pace.

This is a clear demonstration of the importance of comparing purchasing power rather than just dollars spent. China's military budget is less than half that of the US in dollar terms, but in terms of purchasing power China spends more. And with recent improvements in technology it's no longer a matter of quantity over quality. Just as important, consider that if the US and China clash, the US will be fighting the entire Chinese force but using perhaps half the US force as the rest would be deployed in the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean, and Atlantic. So in that sense (except for carriers) China has already surpassed the US in terms of forces that would be available in the western Pacific.

I disagree, this strategy could be comparable to the Naval Arms race between Britain and Germany leading up to World War 1. The Germans tried to rapidly develop an industrial navy but soon realized that they couldn't keep up with the British. When it came to tactics, the British navy was also spread across the globe protecting their colonies and dominions, so the Germans rather than spreading their forces, consolidated them in Europe in order to have a large enough fleet to take on the British forces individually. Unlike the British in this scenario though, the US is not burdened with protecting all the global oceanic regions. If we wanted to, we could recall most of our forces across the globe and consolidate them in the regions that matter most (in this case the Pacific and Indian oceans).

If you include this then the Chinese buildup looks even more alarming - for every supercarrier the US has commissioned over the last 21 years they have generally also decommissioned one as well, while apart from their corvettes and older frigates the Chinese have hardly decommissioned anything. In 2001 the US had 12 carriers in service while the Chinese had now, next year the US will be down to 11 carriers while the Chinese will have three. Similar counts could be done (I'm too lazy !) in terms of full sized destroyers, LCDs and fleet submarines, in pretty much every category that counts the Chinese are approaching parity or superiority with the US in terms of numbers, tonnage and capability with the US.

PLA has never been defeated. USA has only experience vs goat herders and peasants, and they've always been defeated. From Korea and Vietnam, which were vs China and Chinese backed Vietnamese, to Afghanistan. All defeats.
USA has zero experience fighting a modern army of China's caliber, especially off China's coast which is where any fighting will take place.
There's no experience which will defeat Chinese anti ship missiles from coastal batteries, or their carrier killer missiles with 1500km range.
USA has never fought against nuclear power with asat capabilities and hypersonics which can target anywhere in USA in less than 30 minutes.
USA can only fight weak countries who can't fight back, and even then, like I said, every time they fought China or their neighbour, they lost. In Korea or Vietnam or Afghanistan, all China's neighbours, all lost.
And in Korean War, that was USA and 17 other countries, fighting a 1 year old China who was in crippling poverty with peasants and pea shooters with zero literacy rate or education, zero sea or air power, zero heavy weapons, and still lost.
PLA and China is undefeated, and undefeatable back then let alone today when China is united and 98% approval rating.
If there is a war, it will be China defending its sovereignty and teritory, ie Taiwan or SCS, which will give China even more of an advantage morale and dedication wise. It's an existential threat for China if they lose, so they will fight to the last man. USA will have no chance if they choose to fight, but just like Ukraine, USA is not dumb and won't ever fight vs either Russia or China directly.
In USAs own war games fighting over Taiwan, they get reamed every time. Like not even close, they just get roflstomped. And every year that passes, it only gets more and more in China's favor. That's objective and undeniable facts. USA is 10000km away, China is 100km. Not much USA can do, especially when China has unstoppable carrier killer missiles that have 1500 km range, which means USA cannot use the jets on the carriers since they don't have the range to go do missions and come back. China also has a bigger navy than USA, and it will all be concentrated next to China obviously while USA is spread out all over the world. China can also pick and choose when to attack, if at all. By the time USA can even respond and get there, the war will already be over. China can build up and mass up slowly like right now and there's nothing anyone can do until it's too late. There's no defending Taiwan if China really wanted to use force. Same as Hong Kong back in the day. But it's just China doesn't want to kill other Chinese and destroy their own island and infrastructure. Same as Hong Kong. They can and will unify peacefully, same as Hong Kong. Taiwan can never declare independence, so there's only one way it can end. With unification. Time is on China's side, so there's no rush. Every day and year that passes, China is stronger and richer while Taiwan and USA weaker and poorer, relative to China at least.
You know Taiwan is only 100km from china and that China can cover the whole of Taiwan with radar and anti air missiles from the mainland? Soon as plane takes off in Taiwan an anti air missile in China can take it out straight away. Every jet would be mapped and tracked 24/7. China would have air superiority and there would be nothing Taiwan can do. Taiwan would lose all its runways, military bases, radar sites, anti air batteries etc instantly as soon as China decides to attack. Taiwan could only hide in mountain caves and try fight some guerilla war, but that won't last long since they are an island which will be blockaded, and China has 1.4 billion people and will just eradicate all resistance easily. They have the tech and surveillance to defeat guerrilla warfare tactics, there's no where in Taiwan they can hide and base attacks from, it's too small. China would easily root out all resistance. No outside forces can resupply Taiwan resistance once China is fighting and blockading the island and covering it all with anti air and anti ship radar and missile batteries from mainland.
If China attacks, USA can only watch as China takes Taiwan, and then maybe try bomb Taiwan itself after China has won and China controls it. They can never defend or take Taiwan back, only bomb Taiwan itself..
HOWEVER, after China takes Taiwan, it will be considered part of China proper, and any attack on Taiwan is the same as an attack on China.
This would be cosmdiered an act of war and also an unprovoked attack on China which will of course force China to retaliate with an attack on America. Probably target Guam or Hawaii, or USA bases in Japan or wherever USA attacked Taiwan from.
If USA responds again, then it will be full on war with both mainlands taking damage, and can easily escalate to all satellites being taken out, no one able to leave earth ever again for thousands or millions of years due to debris, and of course, nuclear Armageddon.
USA will not risk total war with China over Taiwan. Just like they will not risk total war with Russia over Ukraine. They won't even risk a little war, let alone total. Just see Syria. Too scared to even do anything in Syria.
After Afghanistan and Ukraine, USA and west have lost all credibility and only a moron would rely on them for any long term support, let alone military protection when it comes to Russia or China.
USA will not do anything against Russia or China unless they are directly attacked or USAs own core interests are directly threatened. Taiwan is not a USA core interest it will risk total war vs China over. Same as Ukraine.

Neither Russia or China are working on hypersonic cruise missiles (HCM) or at least not publicly and both of them are FAR behind the US in development of HCMs, but ahead of the US in HGMs. However, the US has little interest strategically in HGMs. No country on earth can defend against an ICBM barrage, which would make the functionality of a HGM useless.
