  • Happy Holidays Griddle Nation! We did a take-out steak shoot out comparing 3 national chains. The big takeaway is this,,, None of these steaks compare to buying a fresh one from your butcher and dropping it on your griddle. Hope you enjoy the video! Cheers!

I think Texas Roadhouse has the highest quality steak. That being said, how its cooked makes a big difference. Quality of meat makes a huge difference and I feel that's why Outback Steak while cooked well was flavorless. I live in Iowa so I'm somewhat spoiled to quality beef. Great video guys, always enjoy watching you guys cook and/or eat.

Morning Branden, Thanks so much for the kind words and yeah, totally agree. The quality of the beef makes a huge diff... We can get prime pretty easily but you pay out the nose for it. The tomahawk steaks Chris bought last season were outstanding but it think he paid over $250 or something for the 3 of them. We did get several meals out of each though so I guess if you go on a "per plate" cost it isn't as bad as it seems. My local market had choice rib eye for $19.99 a pound on sunday. I am guessing you get it far cheaper where you are? Thanks for taking the time to comment! Griddle on bud! -N

Crazy I prefer outback when it comes to ribeye. I have ordered from all 3 not at the same time but 3 different days to kinda of do a comparison myself. Again I did the rideye. I myself have a hard time getting the NY strip to come out perfect on the grill or griddle because it's such a lean cut of beef. Good point on the beef flavor though. I like a top center sirloin for the beef flavor and I can get it cut thick enough were I don't over cook it. Great video guys as always..

    • @TheGriddleGuys
      @TheGriddleGuys  2 года назад

Rib eye is also my preference. My memory might be fuzzy but I think I chose to go with strip because it was the one that was most similar across the 3 chains. Agree with your comment though. Ribeye and top sirloin are both more flavorful. Griddle on SmokN! -N

I agree the best steak is always the one that just came off the grill after a few minutes to rest the steak. I always expected that a steak in a take out or delivered would be less than quality. For me, I believe the best steak is done by sous vide then with a torch or extremely hot griddle pan sear the steak for the crust. Using this method has produced the most tender and flavorful of any steak I have every had, far better than any steakhouse steak I have ever had.

It is a tough time to judge restaurants due to the turnover and lack of employees. It looked like some rookies at Outback and Longhorn. Actually - it depends on the particular CHEF you get at any of these chains. I often point out that at our local Red Lobster - the seafood is good as long as you do not get the Lobster. It is consistently overcooked and rubbery even if you ask them to steam it. Locally - and I only get Rib steaks - which to me have the best all around steak flavor of any Fast Food steak house as well as a good steak house - the Outback's Mon-Friday early evening chef wins hands down. The actual steak at the Roadhouse might be better than outback but is cooked all over the map. However - the Local Longhorn is consistently overcooked no matter when you go - although they have the best Baked Potato. WE have a Flemings - part of the Outback group but has PRIME meat - and that is the best we can get in MY area = but it is TWICE the price. My local Costco sells PRIME beef, but you really need a proper Charcoal fire which takes time. A gas fire does not fill the bill. Get yourself a Chimney Starter - start the coals in it with Newspaper and let them have 1/2 hour BEFORE you spread them from the starter and maybe about 10 minute spread out on the grill but do add a handful of new coals when you dump the coals. ANd cook to about 120-122. Tent and let rest for about 15 minutes for medium rare (Cook your potato in your oven just before you start the coals.) It will not save you money over Outback - and the rest - BUT it will give the PRIME experience.

Tx Roadhouse is loud but it’s kind of meant to be that way. It’s a cross between a steakhouse and a sports bar so to speak. Not meant to be a quiet swanky suit and tie steakhouse. My one big knock on them though is they boil their ribs before searing them and saucing them. Big no no.

Awesome video. I have eaten the same steak at all 3, the sirloin and all are decent. Roadhouse is always to busy and I hate to wait. Longhorns at least by me is the least amount of food at the same or more expensive price. Outback is rarely busy average price and decent. But I still enjoy all 3 if someone else is buying. I am with you, mine are better than all 3 and half the price.

Great video it was informative and entertaining. I enjoyed the comparison. I have been to all 3 and I like them all but prefer TR. I like my ribeyes or filet extra well. About 1/2 the time they get it right but often it is more like medium. A lot depends on the cook. Roadhouse to me is the most flavorful. As they say in the law, it is a subjective test and there is no right answer for everyone. Cooking on the grill is fun and all but it requires constant attention.

Cool video!! This is why I never order steak at a steakhouse. If we go to a really fancy place I’ll always order seafood and if it’s a chain like these places I’ll get prime rib. I always say I can make a way better steak for a fraction of the price at home on my griddle. I could probably make a better prime rib too, but that’s an entire process and investment.

Some of the best advice ever given to me when it comes to making your own steak at home is to spend the extra money on usda prime. If you're like most people you don't make steak really often so it's not going to break you financially, and you will be very happy you spent the extra money. I usually go with a boneless ribeye because of the great flavor and their easy to cook. Also, it took me awhile to convert to cooking them on a cast iron pan vs grilling them but honestly i think it's the best way to make them to help achieve that outer crust everyone loves. Season with salt & pepper and some garlic and butter in the pan. Medium rare is probably the most desired temp, around °127 to°135. Get a digital thermometer (around $10) to take away much of the guesswork.

I really like the Texas Roadhouse bone in rib-eye, and like their rolls better than the small loaf breads.
However, I’ve never had it take out.
Went to Longhorn for the first time last week and got their bone in rib-eye, it was as good or better than Texas IMO, I was happy with it.
Haven’t been to Outback in years, but would always get the Outback Style prime rib. Seasoned and seared after roasting.
Not sure if they make it anymore, but it was good.
My parents just left from a visit and bought us a 16.5 lb, USDA Prime, rib roast from Costco.
Vacuum sealed, going to have it for a Christmas celebration with my wife’s extended family on Dec. 18.

Interesting video. We live in north central Maine, and did at one time have all 3
of these restaurants. 1st time into Outback, coulda worn the baby back ribs
home on my feet. 2nd time ordered ribeye's medium. Had to voice a concern,
it almost spoke to me when I cut into it, with a little care.... it might have lived!
"So Sorry, let me correct that for you sir" yup, got the SAME steak back, same
knife cut..... burnt! The ribs I was wearing on my feet, were more tender. I did get
a look at the chef as we walked out, looked like he still had his uniform on from
his day job.......... Jiffy Lube. They weren't long leaving town. In all fairness, if the
"Chef" portrays his/her job as a craft, not a job, it can make a big difference,
same cut, same animal, 3 different results. Beef prices for us isn't an issue, as
I was pulled for the Moose hunt this year, shouldn't have to buy an beef anytime soon.

Good call Jeremy! To me you can't really beat a reverse sear with charcoal in the mix. The high temp dry heat coming from the coals along with the infrared energy and smoke impart a flavor that is tough to match. How about you throw together 3 of those for us? 😀 Sounds delish! It’s the complete opposite where I live. Outback all shutdown, longhorns over cooks medium rare, and roadhouse consistently cooks it perfect. Guess it depends on the gm n cook more than anything.

To me and my family Texas Roadhouse. Their Prime Rib makes me ummmm the first 6 /7 bites of it. No place yet as good as them.

Awesome video guys! Longhorn was the first steakhouse I've visited when first coming to the US, been a fan ever since. I've tried outback and roadhouse and they've made me miss Longhorn's ribeye. I really didn't like the new-york strip though, it tasted burnt. the ribeye's awesome, the burgers are dope, and the service in most locations is really good. I went countless times ever since, alone and with friends, it was always a great meal at decent prices. steakhouses in israel are super uncommon, and if you do find one - don't go in, you'll pay a lot for a great disappointment. Longhorn delivered the best american steakhouse experience for a first timer :)
