I was raised as a Catholic, and the church TRIED to convince me not to touch myself. They failed at that, but they sure did make me feel guilty AF about doing it.
Once you convince someone that anything that can make them happy is a sin and should not be done, you get a very frustrated, very repressed person looking for ANY outlet, and you just have to aim them at whatever you don't like.

Not only that, but imagine the effect of combining the moralizing, pathologizing of masturbation with the massively anxiety-inducing teaching of hell. You basically create a recipe for making a person develop an anxiety disorder because they are put in a position where they are taught to attempt what is ultimately an impossible task, yet that they will burn in hell if they are unable to achieve said task.
In Catholicism we were supposed to confess it before we could get communion. And my parents were the “You were late for curfew that’s a mortal sin (not honoring thy parents) you have to go to confession if you want communion this week” Which as a teen, I hated that because everyone in youth group saw that you weren’t taking communion…
And because you can’t omit a mortal sin knowingly in confession or it’s a worse mortal sin, especially if you take communion afterwards. So basically we had to tell this old man that we were exploring our own bodies and ask him to forgive us because “god gave him that power”, which is so fucking traumatic I can’t stress it enough. And like they asked questions… it’s so disgusting. I’m a happy little atheist now. But that was some weird shit.

I am an older woman (60) and when I was a child my Mother caught me "playing with myself". I felt mortified. It was the early 70s and things were barely starting to change for women. Instead of scolding me she sat down beside me and told me that was a sacred area and it was perfectly okay to make myself feel good. Just wash your hands first !!!
Sadly my grandmother (in the early 2000s) did the opposite with me. She scolded me. Told me I was dirty and going to hell.

It's odd because I grew up in a Christian household, and I've heard my mom say over the years that self-gratification is so normal. My parents are fundamental Christians but thankfully they didnt tell me that masturbation is wrong. Tho sexual stuff was kinda seen as shameful. When I first started masturbating I didn't know what it was I was doing. When I realized, I had open minded friends who helped me see it as a natural thing (we discussed it in general). When I was still a Christian and an adult I also discussed it with my mom, who is so much more chill now and I learned that she didn't think it was a sin.

I feel lucky to have escaped the awkward shame inducing conversations about masturbation at church somehow. Not sure if it was because we went to more "liberal" Catholic churches or what. Quit going at 13 after I successfully argued that as I'd had my Confirmation I was an adult in the Church's eyes and therefore could make my own decisions re religion lol.
I felt guilty when I stumbled upon masturbation as a child because all sex before marriage was “wrong”. I felt a lot better as a teenager when my parents voiced (in the context of talking to my brother) that they didn’t think it was wrong.

Growing up I was raised Christian but am now athiest. I have been basically brainwashed about masturbation to where I feel like its wrong and I was raised to "serve man" my partner is amazing and tries to help but it is a thing that people struggle with.
