the title "Obstacle" is just a working title Paul Banks came up with while the band worked on the songs. So Obstacle 1 and Obstacle 2 were literally two obstacles for finishing the album.

  • @itme7129
    @itme7129 3 года назад +76

Great video! Paul Banks went to NYU for english & comparative literature so his lyrics are pretty dense for sure. but real fun to unpack. This is what I've gleaned (probably incorrectly) haha. All of this is just my opinion and I'd LOVE to read other peoples'! :) Sorry this is long, but none of my friends like Interpol and I have no one to talk about it with lol.
A lot of this album deals with sexuality and love. Some of it distorted. "Her love's a pony, my love's sublimal." The entirety of Obstacle 2. Paul Banks has said Hands Away is about a homosexual man who's into bondage. etc.
Stella: You're pretty spot on, but I don't think Stella's just on drugs. There's a lot of sexual innuendos in this song ie 'black blue serpent swells' 'crevices caressed by fingers.' 'Going down' or 'diving' being a euphemism in itself. So it seems, completely IMO, the narrator is in a sexual relationship with a broken or 'catatonic' lover and he's indulging in it even though he recognizes that she's broken. Dark stuff. There's a lot of references to a 'dark side' of the narrator, and this relationship is a direct look at that. There's a parallel in this song between going down on someone and feeling down or depressed. double entendre. When he shouts "oh stella, I love you" it's his 'climax' from her going down; Paul assumes the character in that moment; very cool stuff. Toni Morrison does that a lot. The song ends with him talking about something invisible you can't hide, ie death or depression. & how he can only 'detect' her in his sleep (dreams/memory) where he sees her wave goodbye. So it's inferred she dies or has become a memory in some way -- she doesn't have to be dead, just lost into the metaphorical ocean of memory. I think it's less of a story, more of an abstract examination of a character. It does say "love drug diver" but i think that's less of her being an addict, more of her being his 'love drug.' He's addicted in the way others would be addicted to drugs.
Roland: This one's weird and I honestly don't understand lol. But it has allusions to a Polish butcher w knives aka Aaron Kosminski (suspected of being Jack the Ripper; he was a barber). Ripper + Poland= Roland. I've read that it's about the narrator's dark side coming out (hence the stop and start beginning and the shushes). Changing the subject to 'look it stopped snowing' is the narrator trying to "act casual" so no one hears him talking about this side of himself. Imagine someone walking by him, so he casually goes "oh look it stopped snowing" so they don't hear. Paul, again, assumes the character. At some point, he gets caught red handed with his 'knives' aka evidence of his dark side i guess. "But the narrator starts to like his dark side "he was growing on me." Also, Karol Kot, a killer, was literally caught with 16 knives allegedly. Either way, specific killer aside, the 'best friend' is just a stand in for his dark side. "severed segments and secretly liked that" is abstract, but I think it's saying 'he only controlled me for brief periods, or segments, at a time. "He always took the time to speak with me and i liked him for that" could be saying it's less of a dissociative identity disorder, and more of a conscious decision.
The New: Pretty straightforward. He's been hiding his 'dark side' from his partner or friend and he's apologizing and coming to terms with the fact that he hasn't been a great partner. He talks about hiding himself and then the gnarly guitar interlude comes, so I think that is his dark side. Dark side meaning the 'part of me' he's talking about. The ending's ambiguous. But I think "I think we should go" with the same dark side guitars blaring could be him sharing his dark side with his partner and them living with it. They set off and we don't really get the resolution. Until the next song.
Leif Erikson: "It helps with the lights out": these lovers can't be intimate in the light bc they're not comfortable truly seeing the other person yet; it's purely sexual. "her rabid glow is like braille to the night" I think proves it's sexual, he's reading her body with his fingers. The next stanza is them waking up early to spend time with each other. This whole song is about the narrator overcoming his sexual addictions ("I'm prey for the female... I like to get hooked") and emotionally connecting to someone for the first time ("you and me in the jungle, it would be okay... it's like learning a new language.") at the end, he says "if you don't bring up those lonely parts, this could be a good time" is him still be wary about opening up to someone, or discussing the "keepsakes" left in his heart aka emotional baggage. But he's ready to hear his partner's "lonely parts... you come here to me, we'll collect those lonely parts (emotional baggage) and set them down...) so he's opening up. "her love's a pony" is like the world's biggest gift, getting someone a pony is very exciting and stereotypically the largest gift you can give someone. "My love's subliminal" is him saying the way he shows his love is less obvious than hers, but it's there. The icebox line: "she thinks my sentimental side should be held with kid's gloves. but she doesn't know i left my urge in the icebox." Is him saying that his lover thinks he's soft, but he's hiding his dark urges from her still. Literally putting a part of himself on ice, which is an idiom that means pausing something. At that point he's lying to her still., but later he opens up of course. Also, the line "I’ll bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night // That is supposing that you don’t sleep tonight" is him saying he'll let her in on his "late-night dark thoughts // sailing the ocean of his mind" if she stays with him. or stays awake with him. Hence leif erikson, he's a sailor.
So the album full of addiction, cynicism, and problematic sexuality actually ends on a somewhat optimistic note. He connects with someone more than he could at the start: "Surprise, sometimes, will come around." "I will surprise you sometimes, I'll come around." Which again is a double entendre bc he comes around by the end of the album, but he's also only partially 'there' at the beginning. ie, random hook ups, not being fully cognizant for your partners/friends, etc.
Paul's a dope writer. Listening to this album is like reading a Raymond Carver short story.

The weird thing about this album that I've found is that you need to listen to it with your attention reversed. Lyrics are last here, bass lines are first and drums are second. You should try to accept all the first impressions, feelings and thoughts you get over certain songs, albums, etc. Don't stress out if they change, they shouldn't be stationary, It's ok for things to be in constant motion, one might even say, pretty much everything's in a forever moving state, try giving less fucks, I can understand ,that you might want some things to be as good as possible, sorts of perfectionism aimed at some of the things you do, but when it comes to forming an opinion you'll like and agree with over time, I don't think it's quite possible, you might form one, that's more or less the same one, but there still will be some nuances, tones, colors, that are gonna be completely different after time, the more time will pass, the more different everything will become, well, at least that's kinda my opinion and pseudo-philosophical way of giving a helping hand you didn't ask for(yes, I'm a huuuge asshole) good luck!

Yeah, it's how I feel about this situation, I support his improvement of criticizing music and not judging an album solely because he's not interested, but he shouldn't be too harsh on his first reactions, even if he doesn't get much, it's a first opinion on the album, and that's just how it is. Basically what I'm saying is that he shouldn't really change his First Reaction format, but improve and evolve it with his new way of criticizing.

My only suggestion would be this: balancing the volume of the voice of each brad, it's difficult to keep on track when the three versions of you speak at same time. Maybe pausing the original video to do a commentary would be a viable solution too.
Anyway, I'm loving your videos and the experimentation of new formats, congrats brad

@@mrflibble1259 some titles that will hang forever are Like Eating Glass, Helicopter, Positive Tension, Banquet, She's Hearing Voices, This Modern Love, Price Of Gasoline and So Here We Are, which I think is enough to make this album a solid experience counting the rest of the songs are decent ones

I LOVE this format. We all have different feelings in different moments, and time is an antidote to our impulsivity. I can see the agreement and criticism in real time, and it's really interesting. I have no clue whether you tried this again, but it's worth revisiting. I had a blast watching this. I know the album well, and you opened up things I only hinted at in my own mind.

Great job Brad on both parts of this review. The creativity kept me powering through all the ads to the end. I’m older than you and TOTBL did for me in 2002 what The Clash did with London Calling in 1969 - reinvented Rock. It stands the test of time, depressing but totally original.

I think you’ll really enjoy the first album by Bloc Party. Bush-era indie post punk in a similar vein to the Arctic Monkeys, Interpol and the Strokes. Loud, stabbing duel guitars, crazy drumming, and some really gorgeous moments throughout. Kele Okereke is one of the best lyricists too imo.

    "8+"?
    yeah, more like 8+2
jokes aside, super interesting review concept and understandable opinions, though i have to disagree about the part where it's not relistenable! this album has such an amazing and consistent sound and it all blends together so well in it's soothing sort of angst. it fits so many moods: sadness, anger, loneliness, just sort of..boredom. it's hard to explain why i love this album so much, but it's without a doubt my all time favorite and it's almost a little unfortunate that not everyone can love it as much as me! we've all got our preferences though. definitely earned a sub from me!

Yesss, the three Bards are back!
This is really entertaining, although, I have to say it's cOnfUsInG af, since i can't understand a single word when the three Bards are talking at the same time... I really wanna know what's your first reaction bc I wanna understand what you are correcting ab it, but I can barely hear the first Brad lmao
(It makes it even harder given the fact English is not my native language).
But don't mind me, I love your vids and again, this is a really cool idea (yes, it is, don't be so hard on yourself), fun to watch.
    Cheers from Argentina!

Yo, I really enjoy the three Brads jamming out to the music. To help them stand out, maybe have the future Brads pop up when they comment, so they don’t get lost while other Brads are talking up. Loving the channel. Keep up the good content 💪❤️

There was a time that Interpol (especially this album) and The Killers were heavy in my rotation, so I found it very interesting every time you mentioned them.
I think in a way, I did treat each like an upper/down to counteract the other, especially during some truly depressing times in my life.
I'm really glad you listened to this :)
