Chinese railway stations are modern and clean. But they are definitely NOT quiet. The ticket offices are horrendously noisy, with shockingly loud tannoy systems and loudpeakers, (and not a little pushing and shoving). Usually you have to queue up for about half an hour to buy a ticket.Sometimes, I suppose, much longer. You are always subjected to at least one airline style security check, and sometimes you are checked even before buying a ticket, then again before entering the departure area. There's little freedom of movement around a Chinese railway station. Once in the departure area, there you remain till your train arrival is announced. Then you are directed to the platform. (id and ticket check first)You must carry identification with you when buying the ticket, and usually you will be expected to show your ticket and id before entering the departure lounge, again before entering the train's platform again, another check once on the train, then often a further check when exiting the train at your destination. The last train I was on, laughably, had a recorded message informing me in English that if I was caught on the train without a valid ticket, I would be prosecuted and placed on a government blacklist for the offence. Honestly, what are the chances of sneaking onto a Chinese train without a ticket? Absolutely tiny. The Chinese system is obsessed with security. The european idea of just rocking up at a train station, sometimes even just walking onto the train and buying your ticket on the train itself, sans id, sans security checks just ain't the Chinese way. One very strange thing also about Chinese train stations is that they are often an hour long bus journey outside the centre of town. I wouldn't trade the Chinese rail setup for say the British one for all the tea in China, no matter how old fashioned our rail network is in comparison. Ditto the Indian System, which perhaps veers in the oppsite direction of being almost totally unconcerned with security and safety issues, but I vastly prefer the freedom of the chaotic Indan system to the ridiculously over controlled Chinese network.
+Martin Cleary dude I am Indian from India and we Indian are trying our best to have Chinese styled system in India .by 2028 we will have 12 such railway system
half an hour to buy one ticket? in fact, you can buy tickets on automatic fetching machines. You do not know that? It usually takes me 3-5 minutes to buy tickets. Being checked when entering the railway station also makes the ride safer. At least you do not have to worry about terrorism. Did you read the news that four Hongkong residents got attacked in Germany on a train recently? China's railway stations are 1 hour long bus journey outside the town? I really wonder whether you visited China. Shanghai has 3 major railway stations and they are all located in different part of the urban area. You can find their locations on Google maps easily. Beijing also has 3 railway stations and they are all located in the downtown area. I do not know which city you visited. Usually these stations are connected by subway lines, BRT, or light rails. Security is absolutely important. If you life can be endangered, will you take the train? Apparently not.
Yup, I'm in China. If I take the 93 bus from where I live in Jiaxing, it takes an hour to get to the train station, which is in the middle of nowhere. There is no subway in Jiaxing. My opinion about security on trains is that there is a trade off between security , convenience, and freedom of movement. European/American trains are safe. Millions of people use them every day, and it's just not worth locking down an entire country or continent just to prevent the very occasional act of terror. To do so is to adjust your whole way of life in order to accommodate the terrorists, and I just cannot see the logic of it. For one thing, the sheer expense of the security apparatus must be massive in comparison to the likely benefits. Sure, if attacks happened every week, bombs went off every month or two, I would reconsider. But that absolutely is not the case, and In reality, you have much greater chance of being run over in a traffic accident, or dying of NOx pollution, but I don't see anyone in China (or anywhere else) clamouring to say, reduce the speed limit to 15kph and to triple the price of cars. Life is inherently dangerous, you take risks every day, and in this case, the tiny risk of terror attacks, for the time being, do not justify s stultifying security response. As for obtaining tickets electronically, well, I know that it can be done, but as a foreigner, I'm not really sure how I do that, and judging by the queues that I have encountered, for some reason, people often don't obtain their tickets electronically.
Martin Cleary There are three stations in Jiaxing. If the place you live is still far away from any of them, I am so sorry about that. But in my city, it normally takes me 10-20 minutes to get to the station. So that is not a problem for me. Next time I suggest you take a taxi. LOL. Yes, I agree with you. Different people have different attitudes towards life. I lived in New York city for a couple of years and I was really afraid of terrorism. The subway system in NYC has no safety inspection procedure. And my friend's new SUV was stolen but NYPD said they could not find it. That is impossible in China because video cameras are installed everywhere. American people focus more on individual privacy than safety I think. As for tickets, I usually buy them online and then go to any machine in the station to print them. It is fast and easy. Next time you can do this.
Aactually the high speed train is already like a bus system in China, if you miss this train, there will be another one on the same line to arrive in about 30 minutes.
Yeah, thanks, the Chinese government promote real estate market, raise up the land price, and sell the land to the house developer for a large money, and put the money to build these infrastructure. After a line is finished, for the locations it run through, the land and house prices will also be higher, and the government sell it again to collect money for more projects. so it's a loop.
The 30min gap only works for short distance and/or busy routes (Beijing-Tianjin/Shanghai etc.), my hometown is Zibo, Shandong, and the service gap of Beijing-Qingdao trains is mostly 1 hour, I believe some other services may have longer gaps.
I traveled from Shanghai to Xian on one of these trains. It is a great way to travel to travel. I have used similar trains in Vietnam and Thailand and always enjoyed it. A very cost effective way to travel in Asia .
Because India has been more concerned about China, they think that China is their catch up with the object. But India does not understand China, so it is blind
Shah Rukh Sayed Easy as fuck, tell your government, grab your money or something same value agricultural product come to China, sign a contract, just buy it dude. Since I was the only person on the train who spoke English figuring out things was difficult. However, there was always a packet of tea bags and a large thermos jug of hot water outside my door each morning. When I got to Beijing, I found the airport there also snowed in. No high speed trains in those days !

remember, only 30 years ago, the railway system in China is far more than old, ineffective, crowded and slow and just like or less than many developing countries.
Last time I travelled in Rajdhani a week ago it was like the aisles were full of wrappers or plastic bottles, paper chunks thrown here and there, and the half emptied food trays were lying in the corner scattering dals/curry out and reaching to people's luggages. By what I saw it was the middle aged uncles and aunties mostly who were littering.
About 20 years ago, it took me 12 hours travelling from Jinan (a city located between Beijing and Shanghai) to Shanghai. Now it takes only 3 and half hours on a G train.

The new sleeper train between shanghai and beijing is much better. Worth the try. Price is the same. Also remember to book food delivery in advance , which is only available in china.
yes, that's possible. but it's China, you are totally safe. I rarely heard any assault happened in this case. moving to another cabin is also pretty often if you ask the crews for help.
India is still a long way to go in this field. Super fast trains require perfect track maintenance and any shortcoming will lead to a massive disaster, much severe than what happened today. My suggestion is, Indian Railways be handed over to the military. They will certainly do a better job.
Hasan Iqbal uneducated people like you don't even have any idea what you are talking about. we are years ahead of Porkistan & Bangladesh in railway system.
I have to tell you that this train, despite its look, don't run at the dedicated high-speed tracks at all, which closes at around 2-5am for daily maintenance. 100% of its journey are on the old railway, max speed at 160kph.
That's exactly what I expected when I bought the ticket, and I initially find it a very innovative idea to do that; however, when I board the train and ask where will the train depart from the Passenger Dedicated Line (PDL) and join the old route, the conductor said no PDL segment is included in the itinerary. Actually before the grand opening of Beijing-Shanghai PDL, there are diesel locomotive train that can complete the route non-stop in exactly 12 hours. Using EMU trains really don't help much. So... somewhat disappointed. The old route is very old, very busy and very slow. There are many very curvy segments as it wind through the city centers. Partially (25%) adopting PDL until somewhere near Jinan can save somewhat two hours, and push the departure time to 9.30pm - much more convenient as people can finish a proper dinner.
Donghai Gai I took the high speed train which was G instead of D from Guangzhou south to XI'AN north which the distance is more the 1700KM, 5 stops in between, took me 8 hours. And also the D train from Beijing to Tianjin which took 45mins, and Zhuhai to Guangzhou South in 1hr and 15mins with 3 stops in between. So what was the speed?
Generally speaking D one notch slower than G; and it should be true that for any given pair of origin and destination, D will take more time and is cheaper. But you do need to compare case-in-case. G may be only marginally faster.
This line was already backed speed: 300 KM/Hour since 2014, it will further back to 350KM/Hour this year. It's called G-Line, the D-Line running in this railway was limited to speed 250 KM/Hour but the price of this line is lower 20% than the G-Line.
clean and beautiful stations and train also. washroom is also very clean. wonderful.
india have long history and kind people,i believe india can do the better in the future ,wish from beijing
And I am surprised that Indian style toilet are also available. Earlier I thought that it is used only in India and pakistan
those toilets are common in east Asia, Japan and Taiwan also use those.
they r called squat toilet. they are common across Asia.

Why a Chinese bullet train video, and the comments mainly come from Indian…
Because India has a large rail network but high speed rail networks are still on inception.. So curious.
Alex Earl because there are 1.2 billion indian in the world.
Because India has been more concerned about China, they think that China is their catch up with the object. But India does not understand China, so it is blind
Because westerners are all in replies bullshitting about CCP.

Hello! Great video!!!
Interesting vid Mark!
Thanks.
How long does it take actually from Beijing to Shanghai?
5h by a high speed G-train (top speed 300 km/h)or nearly 12h by the train shown in the video, or more than 20h by a normal quick train. The distance between Beijing and Shanghai is about 1400 km.
In the meanwhile America has old-fashioned trains.
Andres Olguín but American sleepers have your own toilet.
Maybe Americans prefer driving or flight.
Maybe American airlines and carmakers owners prefer planes and cars.
But America has efficient airlines. Have been to both US and China, both systems are just fine.

Great facilities
beautiful bullet trains
The new sleeper train between shanghai and beijing is much better. Worth the try. Price is the same. Also remember to book food delivery in advance , which is only available in china.
Fabulous!
Are the berths allocated to your ticket or first in first serve?
Berth and car number printed on your ticket - like sleeper trains everywhere, really.
Thanks. Ive never been on one but looking at going SHA to BEI in February.
So you could end up sleeping with three men if you are a woman in the SAME room?
no, it was assigned when you buy the ticket
yes, that's possible. but it's China, you are totally safe. I rarely heard any assault happened in this case. moving to another cabin is also pretty often if you ask the crews for help.
very neat n clean ..... guys what about INDIAN Railway ??????
MITRON
CHINA MEIN SAFAI KA SAPNA MR MODI NE 100 SAAL PEHLE DEKHA THA ISLIYE SAFAAI HONI CHAHIYE YA NAHIN
Indian railways are Good But people are worst they don't deserve even a cycle....
Are there any sockets in the compartment?
the station was so clean and amazing....india mein aisa kyun nahi.....
India ke logo ki wajah se. Agar sab log stations ganda na kare to India ka stations bhi saaf rahenge
Love your videos very informative, but do you buy the whole cabin when you travel? I've always had someone with me on a sleeper train.
How long does it take from beijing to shanghai and how many stop?
please my Indian railway watch video and improvise as compare to china
yes, mission started by modi
India is still a long way to go in this field. Super fast trains require perfect track maintenance and any shortcoming will lead to a massive disaster, much severe than what happened today. My suggestion is, Indian Railways be handed over to the military. They will certainly do a better job.
Thulasi pathapati
lol...india never see this dream... u r far behind from bangladesh...lol...
Hasan Iqbal uneducated people like you don't even have any idea what you are talking about. we are years ahead of Porkistan & Bangladesh in railway system.
Railway stations are much larger than here's biggest airports.
This is the same in japan's sleeper train. It only runs overnight at 10pm.
Is that the old Jinghu Railway
动卧走老线

The taste of train food is a little weird, even worse than those served on the plane, usually i prefer to boil some instant noodle by myself.
Well developed
and
Well advanced.
looking very nice !
I am still waiting for India be like this.
I have to tell you that this train, despite its look, don't run at the dedicated high-speed tracks at all, which closes at around 2-5am for daily maintenance. 100% of its journey are on the old railway, max speed at 160kph.
I think it used sections of H-S route, which is why it beats the classic sleeper trains by several hours!
It's called G-Line, the D-Line running in this railway was limited to speed 250 KM/Hour but the price of this line is lower 20% than the G-Line.
superb i like so much

No, G is high speed train, D is a level down. Both have sleeper trains.
