No one in indian history has created such a rich texture of music combining traditional and western nuances. It is during his era that people started enjoying music through analysis rather than pure listening. With all due respect to his predecessors, no one was able to produce such variety of rhythms & sounds till his entry. The bass guitar, string arrangements, heavy brass sections and bass flute usage has astonished even the greats at that time... Long live raja

Counterpoint or polyphonic tracks are the ones give excitement to the listeners. They r multi (variable) layered, mostly layers (vocal or melodies) in different octaves and harmonic at the same time. I wish Illayaraja had production capabilities like now days. ❤

Underrated Genius, his knowledge and application of contrapuntal music is phenomenal, especially since most Indian composers prefer composing monophonic music,focusing on only one central melody, as opposed to the rich textures of polyphonic music which is so prevalent in his music. I don't speak his language, but the demonstration and explanation he provided transcends all language barriers.

Fusion and using jazz in it is different than making them part of DNA. Ilayaraja made it as a part of DNA. And I revere Ramamaoorthy . TKR that music is fusion.

Like Shankar Jaikishan's own instrumental album or R D Burman's work during that period, all that it does is use Western percussion and some instruments often used in jazz like guitar and saxophone. It doesn't exhibit the harmonic vocabulary of jazz and is at the most a pastiche of musical movements commonly heard in jazz. I mean, it is commendable but to attempt it to spin it as some vaunted art that Raja devotees don't want to give credit to speaks volumes about that poster (the one above you). Raja has actually done fugue with Carnatic melody. Do people realise what that means and how difficult it is?
superb video... its not a video at all, its a treasure man!!!... Hey! today's young music directors, do study this maestro and learn something from him!!... The concept of counterpoint was created by Joseph sepastian Bach... I think Ilayaraja is the only man who introduced this concept to india and using it in his number of songs!!.. Even if Bach is alive, he would have been amazed to see the different varieties of counterpoints used by Ilayaraja!!.. we should be very proud to living in the era of Ilayaraja!!!...
Raaja Sir, himself an admirer of Johann Sebastian Bach... Illayaraaja s own Album HOW TO NAME IT ...Raaja Sir included Bach number in his album, an imagination chat with Bach, both the tunes western (Bach) and Carnatic (Raaja)..goes simultaneously.. in a Symphone Orchestra....

I beg to disagree with you on the Counterpoint topic. It was not created by Yohan Sebastian Bach, the technique of Counterpoint has a very ancient history. It existed since the late 9th century - if not earlier, it was known as 'organum' then. Bach and other modern composers like Fux have only used it very skillfully in the modern times. We can say that this technique only gained popularity during the Renaissance period through the compositions of Back and Fux.
Ilayaraj is a fan of Bach, in his own words.
