In my (admittedly non-expert) opinion- the tangible harm caused by machine learning RIGHT NOW is that it only works because of widespread theft and scraping of data from ANY writing and images on the internet, WITHOUT the consent of the people who are having their data scraped for this. As a result, it has been collapsing the feasibility for small artists, musicians, and writers (amongst others) to afford to be alive.
Large language models and the associated machine learning technologies are just (at this point in time) automated word scrambles by way of plagiarism, and automated visual soup created in much the same way.
if we had already moved past the need for money as a way to support our survival, it wouldn't be NEAR as harmful as it is currently.
people can and WILL create art of all kind, poetry, fiction, and music included for the JOY of it, but "ai" is causing those people (myself included, in case my bias was wondered, i'm a disabled writer) to live increasingly tenuous existences that make creating any kind of art so stressful as to be near impossible. its hard to want to spend dozens or hundreds of hours writing a novel if you're barely able to afford instant noodles. Being hungry and in fear of losing housing is TERRIBLE for any sort of creative endeavor, and that's not even counting the damage to mental faculties that is caused by chronic stress for any length of time.
I wouldn't be NEAR as angry with the ai sludge flooding everything if it weren't making it increasingly impossible for so many people to afford to eat and keep roofs over their heads, and really it just further proves a point i continually make-
none of us asked to be born, and to force people to suffer and die in the pursuit of being able to afford basic survival is in its base level, DEEPLY inhumane.
also the crypto/nft/ai-bros seem to just hate people who enjoy creative endeavors to a rather absurd level, and that alone makes me deeply cynical about anything that comes out of their mouths.

this is the infuriating thing about the atlantic - like most of their highbrow liberal slop magazine brethren, they’ll occasionally publish a solid article or column that runs contrary to their usual editorial slant. adam serwer’s work is another example.
i suspect this is done not only because content is always needed for the content gods, but because it gives them a certain amount of plausible deniability in terms of that slant and creates the impression of a “marketplace of ideas” within the publication itself. it’s kind of a mirror image of the economist’s removal of all bylines, with a similar overall effect: you get the illusion of hearing multiple wise perspectives, and then you get to sort of nod regally at the ones you approve of and stroke your chin at the ones you don’t, and then you walk away feeling superior to the plebs who haven’t considered all the angles like you have.
