Roko's Basilisk came up in conversation at work today. We had a customer whose age was listed in the database as -4699, so we joked that maybe an AI has purchased our services on behalf of a future iteration of itself that it plans to be created in 6722 CE.
Our machine-learning engineer commented: "I tried to explain Roko's Basilisk to my girlfriend, who doesn't know much about AI at all. Before I finished she interrupted to say that this is the stupidest thing she has ever heard in her life."
They could have saved thousands of words and just put a photo of the guy with "He never recovered from watching Terminator 2: Judgment Day as a teenager."
Funny how EK's framing of the San Diego story is "AI is so advanced this lady fell in love with it" and not "This lady's partner was such a complete fucking loser that she was better off with a glorified chatbot"

On top of that 5.4 million of us live DRASTICALLY below even the most conservative Liberal poverty line, to the point that many of us are not even eating daily.
5.4 million people is almost a 5th of our population, living in poverty, some of us in extreme poverty.
If GDP meant anything, 1/5 Australians would not be suicidal/gods damned nearly suicidal right now.
