On "is private school worth it?" - it feels like the article ignores the time dimension of this - basically, that sending the kid to private school is a gamble that won't pay off until decade(s) into the future. So... of course parents are going to send their kids to expensive schools, even if it probably won't pay off.
A weird twist on this in the US is how public school districts are paid for with local property taxes, so a lot of families buy houses primarily based on the school district it's in. Don't know if that's affected the affordability of housing in the US, but I do know it's a reason why it's hard to make public school funding more equitable - telling petite bourgeoisie people that, sorry, the house you bought to keep your kid in the upper class isn't going to give them the advantage you thought because we're pooling funding now tends to make them explode with anger (and racism).

I will say it's a combination of both that and "I'm not paying for someone else's kid", which, in particular, is a very popular opinion with upper class people that don't have children, so still buy the fancy house in the rich neighborhood (paying for the rich kids there all the same), but don't want a single dollar of theirs making a the life of a child somewhere else better if they can do anything about it.
Here in NJ, the capital city has some of the most underfunded schools because a large amount of property is government-owned (local, municipal, or state, so not taxed), and the rest is, for the most part, low income people renting places and small businesses, so there is no tax revenue to fund schools adequately. Though also in NJ, there's so many townships and whatnot that all, technically, have to fund their own schools that it's an extra complicated mess. And there's money in NJ; Princeton is here. A vacation home of Trump is here. Lots of money in Jersey

The Hindenburg might be the most powerful meme ever to exist. More people died in car accidents in New Jersey on the day of the Hindenburg Disaster than died on the zeppelin, but the car was given unrivaled control of the 20th century, and the hydrogen lifted airship has been firmly relegated to the dustbin of history. Never mind that the progress of materials science has reached a point where hydrogen can easily be contained much more safely than petrol or jet fuel. Any time hydrogen and air travel are spoken of together it's "Oh the humanity!"

1:22:56 Fire of the Mind here. Glad I was able to contribute something interesting to the conversation despite my financial situation making material support kinda difficult right now. For the record, I don't think that the categorical objectification of those classed as less-than is the *sole* defining feature of reactionary or conservative movements, at all, but I do think it's a pretty core feature that a lot of people miss or tend to identify as something other than what it is. It's a big part of why I consider children's liberation an often overlooked and crucial aspect of both anarchy and resistance to fascism.

I think the original phrase is "many a mickle makes a muckle". AFAIK its a Scots variant of "look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves", or at least that's how my mum uses it.
Can't quite parse the use in this article, unless its trying to say that lots of ficcle workers will still make you rich?

Yeah, even the article they read admits this multiple times in the most "but here's why he was right anyway!" manner possible while failing to actually articulate *how* he was right anyway in any convincing fashion.
