6:06** CORRECTION ***THE OVERHEATING HAPPENED ON STANDARD AUTO SHUT OFF*** IF YOU SWITCH TO “AUTO POWER OFF TEMP” IT SHOULD LAST ALMOST 2 HOURS. Also it’s not the same sensor as the A1 but the same processor.
Expected the 4K 60fps, surprised by focus mapping which looks dope.

I have started to think about moving on from my Nikon d3500 because of the crop and it doesn't handle low-light (usually out at night) all that well. would you highly recommend the Sony a7 IV as an introduction to mirrorless cameras from dslr, especially moving from crop sensor to fullframe? I considered sticking with nikon but when you talk about mirrorless it seems to be sony where you can get the best?
@@rboydphotography You can probably save a BUNCH of money on an A7iii or A7iii variants (S/R) once the 7iv is out and in stores. The lenses are interchangeable between all Sony full frame cameras so you could always upgrade the body if you enjoy the platform. I personally just happened to buy an A7iii months ago. I probably won't get the A7iv for a couple years. Food for thought!

Hot take, but I think the internal mics on the Sony cameras are much better than the shotgun mics on top of it. The mic you used for example was way too tinny sounding on your voice and the internal a7iii & a7iv mics both gave your voice more body in the low end.
Not even a hot take. Internal mic objectively sounded better than the shotgun in that example.
@@MarkStCyr Would you say it's specific to this mic or all shotguns used with the a7 series?
@@sarius2388 Likely just that mic. Other mics from manufacturers who specialise in audio production such as Rode, Sennheiser, or even Deity (I saw 'even' as they only really do camera shotgun mics, whilst the others are used widely in music production, but are still good mics) will be far better than Sony's, when it represents a minuscule portion of what they invest in and develop.
I think one thing that people haven't brought up is that Super35 / APS-C users (myself included) will be able to jump straight from their a6500s and FS7s to this camera without worrying their non-full frame lenses won't shoot full 4K. That might be my biggest gripe with the A7SIII when I use it, is that I have to use Clear Image Zoom on my Sigma APS-C lenses to retain full 4K.

Im upgrading from an A6000 to this camera. Since it films 4k 60fps in a crop mode, would it be a good idea to keep some of my crop sensor lenses and use them for this? Or would it be better to still use full frame lenses?
Have you set your temperature overheat shut off to High instead of Standard like how it comes out of the box? Even my FX3 was overheating and shutting off until I changed this setting to high.
I was looking for that articulating screen on the A7RIV. I’m used to have that over the tilt screen and can’t see myself switching to a camera without the articulating screen.

Is a cropped full frame sensor like shooting on APSC? If so that doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. You can always just put on a wide lense and get the full frame look?
Could you do a video on the A7iv and how it can finally take advantage of the Atomos ninja V with the 4:2:2 color and the 60fps in 4K?
Is there any option to have 60 fps full frame ? like shooting none 10 bit to remove the 1.5 crop when you need that extra fov, no 120 fps would have been really nice to have even a 1080 option like in the A73
Theoretically, is it POSSIBLE that Sony can update the firmware to allow Full Frame 4K 60fps? Or is it a hardware limitation to be stuck in Super 35?
Sales of the a7S III will not allow them to....
From what I've heard, it's a sensor hardware limitation. It's why all the cameras using the same Sony sensor are limited to a cropped 4k 60
I may be wrong, though
So, the a7SIII was released before the a7III. When the a7III was released with full frame 4k60, sales of the a7SIII tanked as the a7III was far cheaper with similar overall specs. It has been speculated that the crop on the a7IV is artificial so the a7SIII still remains desirable. In addition to this, I also believe the limitations of XAVC S-I on SD UHSII cards is also artificial to maintain sales of CFexpress Type A cards, of which Sony is one of two reputable brands that manufactures them (there's also Delkin, but who's heard of them). It's been shown that in 24p, the data rate is 240mb/s, leaving plenty of room for 300mb/s SD V90 UHSII cards. It could be argued that with s&q mode being closer to 600mb/s in XAVC S-I they'd limit it for CFExpress cards so you have full compatibility in that file format, but really, I want the option to shoot in the best quality I can at any given frame rate, and am happy to change for s&q when shooting b-roll.

Nice video! I'm concerned about overheating and if I may say you didn't specify the codecs and bitrates used when you experienced overheating. Gordon Laing, Gerarld Undone showed that this camera can shoot 4k 25p for more than 2 hours. I'm pretty confused...

I'm confused, how did that footage at 4:31 look "like a potato?" That looked decent to me, but I admit I haven't been shooting much video lately. Some comparable A7IV footage would be useful.
That focus breathing compensation feature is amazing btw.
if you shoot 10 bit 422 for long then you see 8 but footage then you will get it. 10 bit has so many colors and I recently used FX3 from A7iii and immediately upgrading to FX3 now for that color depth.

I disagree about the Sony a7iii video footage looking like a potato. I recently shot a concert with the a7iii and when I sent the footage to my producer, he was blown away at how good it looked. He called me just to ask what camera I used.
Have you tried filming with the external battery grip? There should be less to little of overheating with the battery grip.

For me the stabilization of a camera is very important because I make all my documentaries around the world freehand, without tripods and without stadyshot. If I had to buy the Sony A7 IV and the Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, could the two stabilizations, both of the camera and that of the lens, work together and in synergy? Do you think the Sony A7 IV with Sony FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS might be the right camera for me or is it better that I look to another camera with better stabilization? Thank you very much

The Canon R5 also has focus breathing control... The 24-70 RF f/2.8 has this feature since it's release date.

*Looking at buying my first camera (deciding between A7c + G: f1.8 -20mm lens and saving more for A7IV).* I’ll be using it for starting RUclips - talking at my desk mainly (maybe twitch), Zoom meetings and general social media. I have a MacBook 2017 w/touchbar, and will be using Davinci Resolve studio free version. Colour grading will be basic in-built LUT’s on Davinci.
Should I get A7c + 20mm f1.8 + soft box light + shure Mv7 microphone + accessories or should I buy a A7IV body with no lense 🤣
I have the A7C and it's a great camera. I absolutely love it. In the situation you described, I feel you should go with the A7C and lens+accessories. For talking head videos 4k 24p/30p will be more than enough. And with decent lighting, the you wouldn't need to grade the footage extensively, so the 8 bit 4:2:0 of the A7C should be enough for you. However if the 4k 60p and 10 bit 4:2:2 is an absolute must for you, they the A7IV is the one for you. Hope this helps you in making a decision 😄
I know that a lot of people have talked about the overheating but i have never had an issue. I recently had a music video shoot in the 90+ degree heat standing directly in the sunlight and had no issues. I do want to note that the body of the camera did become very warm but it never shut down or anything.
Yeah it is a bit of a bummer with that crop in 4k60 but honestly do you see a difference when you mix the footage with 1080p footage
Love the title pack, and again, great review (especially the cat outro!). I keep going back and forth on whether or not I want to switch from Canon to Sony. I started with the Rebel XT, went to the 40D, and currently own a 7D and use an RP at work. I keep telling myself I should switch, though, but all my lenses still work and fit...

I don't know how to feel about Sony crippling the specs on their cameras. It has the same processor as the A1, then why does it have a crop on the 4k 60fps??? Making me rethink of this is the camera I was waiting for.

@@sahaamrahat945 but it does not cripple in any way, A7SIII and FX3 has 4k 120fps, that alone is another league. 4k 60fps no crop doesn't cannibalize anything, just increase sales. Now result is that people are still looking at other brands instead of just buying. So this is a bit of a miss than anything positive for Sony and their products sales.
@@DanasAnis that's the point they don't want their products to be priced similar and this is a way to justify the price brackets as well. I think you've mixed the wrong tags.
Sony or any other camera manufacturer won't want
1) their apsc camera to eat their full frame sales
2) a7 sales to eat a7s or a7r sales
3) a7s sales to eat their FX sales
4) a7r sales to ea their a1 sales
If that wasn't the case then all would more or less do what the other series was offering at a slightly better price but that would ruin expensive gear sales

I think the real question for me is, since I own the A7iii, whether I should upgrade to the A7iv, or get a second camera and pick up the A7siii because I love shooting in low light. Also curious about the realities of shooting photos on the A7siii, especially after your video about comparing it to a medium format with giant prints.
Shooting low light with the A7IV is just as good as the A7SIII (if not better due to the 7K oversampled video). Just watch Matti Haapoja's video on this camera.

@Ramsay I ended up getting the A7siii, in part because I shoot as much video as I do photo, and there are a few things that are plusses that the S has for the purpose. Having shot around a bit with it, I think I'll eventually trade the A7iii for the A7iv, if anything just to have consistent menus between the two bodies, and more consistent color grades between the two if I ever find myself needing A cam/B cam footage. Plus, the shutter on the A7siii is *way* quieter than the A7iii when shooting stills, and I'd imagine the A7iv would have the same. Overall I'm not in a big hurry about the trade-up, though. For my purposes, having the A7iii and the A7siii is more than adequate.

Good luck with that. Check out Gerald Undone's video. This camera has horrible rolling shutter. If you want to create nauseating videos, go ahead and buy this. There are better choices from Sony and others.

How does this fair with 100-400 GM, 24-105 f4 & 12-24 f4. I don't like the flip screen, preferred to have A99ii type screen. Anyway A7IV seems like mix bag this make me wonder which camera to consider A7m3/A7s3/A9m2/A1(the ultimate)

As someone who already has an A7RIV, the A7SIII is definitely the next one on my list. I already have an absolute beast of a photo camera, I think an absolute beast of a video camera would be the perfect addition.

@@thecitizens4573 because the a7rIV is purely designed for photos ( landscape and cityscape precisely) and the a7sIII is designed for videos. the only thing that makes the a7 series better than the a7R series is low light performance. the a7III/IV perform great in low light when the A7rIV usually starts to lose quality above 3200 ISO but like I mentioned before The a7RIV is mainly purchased by landscape/cityscape photographers who need better quality , great dynamic range and many megapixel (61 megapixel on the a7rIV) for big prints. the a7IV is for hybrid shooters people who want good quality for both photo and video but if you want great quality you have to specifically pick and if you're a photographer the a7rIV is levels above the A7 series.

Correction: It has the same PROCESSOR as the Sony A1, not the same Sensor. I do wish the A7IV had a Stacked Sensor like the A1 and A7SIII, to minimize the Rolling Shutter. And that is the ONLY aspect of this camera I find lacking.

No low light review and you're endorsing the camera, I'm excited about it too but until I get my hands on user low light high ISO RAW files, I'm holding off, I've been bitten by the A7RIV noise oversight and now I'm stuck with a great camera in every aspect but low light.
