This has ALWAYS been my nemesis in singing! I've learned over the years that if I don't give it too much air or volume I can transition better. However, on some songs that require power at the point where I reach those notes, I end up having to change the key of the song all together. My range is a "Patsy Cline" range....not a "Pat Benetar" range. Many people think if you can "sing" you can hit "ALL NOTES," which is simply not the case. Sure I can hit MANY notes up in soprano, but to sustain an entire song up there is unnatural for me. My best voice travels from the middle, to an occasional high or low note. It makes my voice sound more colorful, shows my range and gives my voice more depth.....but I'll change a key to avoid singing most of a song in my head voice.

I do chromatic scales every day. Not only are they helping me bridge the bridge, but they're giving me confidence that when i reach for one of those notes, it'll be there! Thank you, Victoria!

I have sung hi soprano all my life from a toddler to a senior. I didn’t discover my chest voice until late 20s. My break is between chest and mid voice. I will have to use a lower range to use this exercise. Intervals between notes determines if I break or not. I don’t have any instruments to help assist with scales. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your help.

I had the same experience, training as a soprano, with no chest voice-- until I got a bad cold one time in my mid 20s. At 70 I have less overall range, but more strength at both ends. The middle is a mess. Few songs that I want to sing are all in one part of my voice. I've been trying leapfrog from one side of the break to the other and back down again. Trying to sense in each song, where the break is so I can switch registers. I had a bad time trying these exercises. I was getting that awful wobble that sounds so bad. Easing up pressure seems to the the thing I need to do. I have a bad habit of wanting to sing loud. I think we have to learn to work around the voice we have, and not wish we could sing like someone else.

@@argusfleibeit1165Your last sentence here is 💯. I just learned that myself. The greatest disservice you can do to yourself and your voice is try to sound like someone else. Your voice is unique and deserves to be heard.

Thanks for this quick tutorial. So glad you mentioned "muscle memory" when it comes to the scales and the mixed voice. Learning certain new songs for a performance always requires me to hum the piece numerous times (low voice then fill voice) with the same intensity I intend to use when singing. That was such an important suggestion early on in my vocal training and you have just reminded me of it. The vocal apparatus does remember if practiced enough👍Your technique is simple but very effective.

I guess we’ve all been trained to sing soprano. I’ve been told never to dip into my chest voice. Which is why I think we separate them as artists but to get that bridge would be a miracle.
