Hickok45 videos are filmed on my own private shooting range and property by trained professionals for educational and entertainment purposes only, with emphasis on firearms safety and responsible gun ownership. We are NOT in the business of selling firearms or performing modifications on them. Do not attempt to copy at home anything you see in our videos. Firearms can be extremely dangerous if not used safely.
My aging mind (I'm 73) believes this IS the "Golden Age" of handguns. The miracle of polymer technology has been an amazing benefit to the shooting sports and for all budgets. Thanks as always for your fair appraisals of these firearms. Checking a gun out at your channel for me is a 1st step in the buying process.
Mass scale 3d printing of firearms will be the next step
..I'm 73 also...Hickok is close to our age..
@@cbroz7492 And a nice guy. Had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with him at a couple NRA conventions. He does not disappoint.
Never thought of it that way as im in my early 20s that just started shooting this year. Although I am grateful for the selection of firearms we have, I think we’re in the most politically unstable time for firearms. One never know what can happen.
@@AC.BalteusI’m in my 20s too. Even though times seem tough in regards to firearms we have to keep striving to maintain our rights everyday so people after us will be able to enjoy all the cool new (and old) guns for generations to come.
Whenever Hickok says "this grip is too thin", I think "this might be perfect for me".
Lol...same here!
As someone who is 6'4", I appreciate that whenever he says it fits like a glove, I get excited. Few guns feel that way.
@@DJA7943 same lol, when i shoot a shorter persons gun i can barely fit my hand on it
Ditto! I might even consider just a teeny weeny little bit then for me too but it's fine, really. Unfortunately that grip safety in the back makes it so you can't put a rubber sleeve on it to thicken it a bit....like I did with my 9mm Shield.
@@fjdubya5726 You might be able to cut out a bit of the rubber around where the grip safety was and it might still stay in place. Better yet I would add on some rubberized Talon grips without the back part that would cover up the grip safety. I can deal with the thinner grip as long as the distance to the trigger isn't too short. I have an original version Shield 9mm and put on a Houge grip sleeve and I can shoot that one well.
hickok45 is the pure embodiment of a very cool granddad, we must keep this man safe at all times, thanks for the videos man.
He's a national treasure.
@@anthonygerber8261You beat me to this comment. And I wholeheartedly agree!
yeah i think he's got that covered
Dope sword,,,! Sweet upload and I like the variety not just guns,
He is what a gun owner should be. Knowing how the weapon works and shooting frequently
There’s a macho factor in firearm opinion-making, as most U-tube reviewers have firearms like Popeye and big tats to match, or XXL hands like H45. I’m 75, mangled my dominant hand as a dumb youth, have never been able to manage a semiautomatic slide with that hand, so have to switch, wasting time. There are plenty of other people with grip issues as well, so kudos to S & W for addressing this issue. I already have the EZ9, but find the low capacity unappealing.
Mine's been solid to date. Always exciting to get a new bowling pin as well 😎
I legitimately thought this was an ultra rare bowling pin for about a minute.
Thanks for all your content mrgunsngear. You and Hickok45 have 2 of the best firearms channels on RUclips IMO.
Shield "PLUS" magazines that can be used with the Equalizer, awesome. I am 65 and never held or fired a pistol in my life. I have owned this firearm for 2 months and the pistol fits my hands perfectly, no issues with grip safety and no issue's with regular thumb safety. Instructor told me if you have TS, train and learn with it first untill you feel confident to move onto a no thumb safety down the road! 👍
Its always said with these kind of guns "great for old people, arthritis, etc" and thats great and all, but your gun being easy to manipulate is never a bad thing. You never know what situation you'll be in when you have to rack your slide, that being easy to do will always be an advantage.
Easy to rack is an important part, but I always want the most reliable handgun I can get my hands on first. Now if you can combine easy racking and unquestioned reliability then now you have something approaching perfection.
A true legend of his generation for the gun channels!
Now he's the kind of cool grandpa you always wanted to hang out with
Maybe.... I think it's an act. He's putting on the nice, cool grandpa persona. Watch his first videos he made. He's more blunt and less hokey then
@@Visiblyblue Truth is most everyone goes with what's been working for them. He makes a good living off of doing something he enjoys, and how many of us can say we really enjoy our jobs? Sponsors are going to tend to go with those who have a lot of followings. Noticed that now he no longer has the ammo deal with Federal, not sure what may have happened.
I grew up without a grandfather and if I was lucky enough to pick someone it would be hickok45 wonderful human being!
I just mine yesterday at the Pittsburgh show for under $480. And it's coming with an extra 3 x 13rnd mags from S&W Freedom Days Rebate. Last August 2022, I bought the Shield Plus OR Bugout kit and having mags that interchange sounded great after they released the Equalizer on the market. So last years Shield Plus OR kit came with 3 extra 13 rnd mags, and a bugout bag and the stock 2 mags with the gun once being 10 and the other being 13. Now, I have an Equalizer, a Shield Plus, 9 x 13 rnd mags, 2 x 10 rnd mags with one having a Pearce grip extension, and 1x 15 rnd, a Maglula speed loader, and a bugout bag and med kit for $949.00 including both specials in a 12 month period. Unbelievable savings with S&W. I'm an older Vet. I'm 5'6" and had both hand worked on. Around 50yrs old now and kept the military love for this long. I love these products offered today.
Just got one of these, love the thumb safety. Love that you can chamber it safe. Just FYI, some of the features (thumb safety, slide release) require some working in to make them "EZ". I recommend giving one a shot at the range if you get a chance!
The thumb safety is exactly why I bought it, so it could be loaded. It’s probably just me, having learned firearms in the military and it’s just ingrained in my head and muscle memory ‘safety on’ ‘safety off’. Just my personal preference.
@@nostalgicvibes3122I'm not a vet but I feel the same way. My Shield has the safety too. I carry appendix with the aftermarket belt clip. I definitely wouldn't carry it that way without a safety. I've never had the safety come off in the approximately 8 years I've owned it. My muscle memory is automatic too, at this point. No thought whatsoever.
Just looked in my garage and I have a whole bunch of those bowling pins I would be willing to donate to the channel? Nice, as always, content!!
To remove the slide, lock the slide back and turn the lever. Then bring the slide forward while holding the grip until it comes to a stop. Then remove the slide the rest of the way without holding in the grip safety.
I bought more shares of Smith and Wesson yesterday and I'm glad I did. Smith has been killing it with the designs lately. Love that 1911 style grip and thumb safety, wish they had that in 10mm
Really, i think they look so horrible, and i wouldnt buy one just because of the look of the grip safeties, but to each their own i guess.
@@leadhead7338 Who ever said they would?
@@rackal3753 many people that have bought them, look through the comment’s
@@leadhead7338 No I meant who said that they would buy them just because of the look of the grip safeties?
@@rackal3753 no idea I was stating I sure would not, they look stupid
Im.a 1911 tyoe of guy myself and have no problem with the grip safety..I'm completely comfortable with the grip and controls. At 73 I'm not likely to give it up...
These are great pistols. Reliable with anything I’ve put through it, accurate, good trigger, good capacity, lightweight. I love it.
S&W killin it lately.
I bought one a couple months ago. I wear size small hands, and I have tendonitis and arthritis, so this gun is perfect for me. I got the "No thumb safety" and don't have any problem with the grip safety. If I were to start carrying appendix, the grip safety would give me a little more peace of mind. I've been carrying 3 o'clock for going 30 years, so I'll probably not switch.
I have been watching this channel for years and always appreciate the honest perspective given in the reviews. I am 80 years old and am fortunate to have put together a wonderful collection of firearms. I have literally tried several dozen handguns to use for carry (The Golden Age Hickok45 speaks of.). I have the double whammy of arthritis and neuropathy and tend to like all metal handguns. I still look the guns like the 365 for carry. Oddly the 365XL mentioned in this review was an absolute disaster for me. I could not shoot it well and it actually caused pain in my trigger finger that went up my forearm. Probably the anticipation of pain caused the poor shooting performance. Reluctantly I finally scrapped the 365. After all of the experimentation I wound up with two variations of the Shield Plus, a 3.1 inch and a 4.0 inch Performance Center Model. I shoot both of them well and they cause me no pain. Because of this I added the Equalizer to the mix. Easy for me to manipulate and shoot well. I am in the process of teaching my four grandsons to shoot and this gun works well because it is easy to manipulate. I really like the remarks made at the end of the video stating that everyone is different in what works well for them. The criticisms of the Equalizer made here are all valid but in spite of that, for me it has been a good choice. Keep up the honest reviews, and your great displays of shooting.
Not sure why I ALWAYS chuckle when John does his fence joke at the end.
The handgun is perfect for da fence. 😃😄
I bought one. Ran about 200 rounds thru it and it’s a great shooter
For bullseye shooting?
Picked my Equalizer this week ( from Bud’s!) I am a SW guy and never had a problem w grip safety on 380 EZ. Now I am worried if H45 is “shooting blanks” , I will need to spend a little adjustment time at range ! I have trouble hitting a pin with a 16 lb ball so will see
As brilliant as you are about firearms, and I'm being sincere, I bought it as a neat toy, made in America, just for fun. I really do well shooting it at 72 years old. The easy rack is just a bonus. Starting out on revolvers many years ago, I don't care about the "reset." Thanks for all the years of great videos.
"Reset" only became a thing once Glock clones appeared. In the revolver days, nobody mentioned reset.
Uncle I'm your big fan ❤❤
I'm from India 🇮🇳
YOU SEEMED like a little kid who just opened his Christmas gift, when you showed us the bowling pin.
I'm a 1911 guy I like grip safety. My late wife had a 380 Shield she didn't like it and sold it. That was when they were still kind of new she ended up with a Ruger LC9Pro mostly over the slide being easy to operate on the Ruger.
My sister picked the original LC9 way back when, based on how it fit her hand and the ease of the slide. We found out the trigger was awful, of course, but the LC9s came out within a few months and we traded it in immediately. Good host for a Crimson Trace Laserguard, too.
I got her the pk380 from walther with the laser. Amazing pistol
@@playerzero2236 My wife carried a Walther ppk for years. She started having issues with the slide on it too.
@@ronrobertson59 it was probably old
The EZ380 is my spouses absolute favorite and what got her interested in going to the range and improving. Good on Smith for improving on it although a performance center version w improved looks is in order
There is something supernatural about this man .
These are decent shooters. Mine groups well, but it's hitting about 3" low from my POA, which is a major adjustment for my shooting (30 feet) and is a little weird. Adding an Optic is likely the way to go here. It's a super soft shooting gun though, doesn't give me any hotspots as I thought it would with the grip safety. For the target market it's intended, they did quite a bit of good here, making it one pistol you can essentially use for carry and home defense. I did short stroke the reset a couple of times so far, even though it's not super long. It's an interesting gun.
Based on a hundred-ish rounds, mine seems to shoot low as well. At 5-7 yds, it was hitting 1-2" low with the 3 dots aligned. To hit my aim point, I felt like I had to have the front dot just above the rear dots. It was uncomfortable.
I hate thumb safeties. Doesn't allow it to fit in a kydex holster. You don't want to fiddle with a safety when in danger. That grip safety is all you need. Love the equalizer (without thumb safety)
Always good to start the day with hicock 45
A couple strokes and loss of hand strength and this was just what I needed. I have wide hands so the 10 round mag only allows 3 fingers on the grip but the other two work better.
I hear you, Brother. 2strokes and hang in\ in there.
This man popped up on my algo and I've appreciated just watching him love his hobby and educate us
I lost my index finger on my left hand and it makes it hard to rack a slide like I use to. It's hard to rack my P365, but not my Stoeger CTR9C. The spring is much lighter on the Stoeger then the P365. I love my P365 for carry and I wish the spring was as light as my Stoeger.
I love the sound of gunfire and the smell of smokeless powder on a fall morning.
Absolutely a national treasure. Thank you for all you teach us, Hickok! I'll be looking forward to your 2030 review of the 18th Equalizer model haha
Thanks, Mr. Hickok, and yes that particular pistol seems to shoot low and a little left to you.
Hickok45 is the GOAT: Greatest Of All Time.
I have an Equalizer. Mine will sometimes eject the the shell casings straight back into my face. I saw some come close to your face as well. I don't have that problem with my other guns. Thumb safeties are nice when you are shooting with gloves on.
That’s why I like watching Hickok videos over and over for he do it like you are in the ‘classroom’ at the same time get entertained/educated - the ‘Maestro’ Hickok 🤨
Not sure why S&W didn't just name it the EZ Plus. Almost worth buying one just to get the 15 round magazine for my Shield Plus. If it's anything like the Plus, it will be 10 months before you can find a 15 rnd in stock anywhere! Brilliant move by S&W to make the magazines interchangeable though.
Because EZ sounds like a gun for old people and chicks ...Equalizer = more testosterone?
The 15 round magazines have already come in stock many times on various websites.
I’ve already bought two of them from different places.
All shooters would benefit from magazine interchangeability. Manufacturers get on it.
@@AJ-gk7bn Good to know. Guess the Equalizer isn't near as popular as the Shield Plus, so that would kind of explain magazine availability already. (I guess)
I bought a S&W Shield Plus and the sights are the same as the Equalizer, I found it shot low. I also like a 6 o'clock hold and have to hold high. Outside of this its a great gun.
I have a .380 EZ I prefer those serrations and the slide on ithe EZ. Not a bad firearm but not that nice looking. Including the Lula loader makes it a nicer value
PS
They include an extra button for the mag release so you can convert it for a lefty.
For EDC I'll stick with my P365XL
I love a thumb safety. And it isn't because I don't trust myself... it is because shit happens and I like having that second layer of protection from accidental discharge.
It doesn't slow you down in a self defense situation or speed shooting long as you remember to train turning the safety off as you draw. Also the thumb safety can help act as a throttle point for your thumb. And help promote proper grip.
My wife got a 9 EZ for the ease of cocking the slide. She has arthritis in both hands. I am a 1911 guy, and as such could teach her about the thumb safety and grip safety. I think the grip is to small also. The sights are low on her gun also. I might have to talk to Smith about it.
The man itself has hard time to convince himself whether it is a good gun or not.
Love ya Hickok! Thank you for bringing us so many awesome videos.
“Must be some blanks in there”!!
😂😂 I’ll have it to remember that line!! Lol
Just ordered one 2 days ago. I was torn between two great names, S & W and Beretta. I picked S & W bc of 3 mags, the capacity, easy slide, and price. Thanks for the review!
Where did you order it if online? Been looking
@@gunprepohio5743 At my local gun store/range
My girl loves shooting my Beretta APX A1 more than any of my guns but she has an extremely hard time racking the slide. You probably made the right choice.
Colt action single army : that’s my title!
Regarding that AMF bowling pin, I believed that AMF was a huge conglomerate that actually owned Harley Davidson back in the late sixties or early seventies. There may have been quality issues with the bikes built during this period. The HD bikes I owned later had superb build quality. Anyway, the bowling pin made me chuckle. --Old Guy
“Another option…”, not a resounding thumbs up. Always appreciate your reviews.
...Starring Denzel Washington, lol.
Good job S&W! 😄
Damn thats a crystal clear camera they use.
Just bought one. Arthritis is a problem. Love the EZ slide. Shoots great. Price is right. Great trigger. Thanks for the review.
These are the only reviews I wait on. Some guys use all the complicated terminology trying to sound smart. I like the simplicity of “I like the trigger”
I have arthritis, but my hand strength isn't so I can't rack the slide on most pistols. Recoil is another matter though. I've moved to lighter calibers to keep the pain afterwards down to a dull roar.
I like the thin grips on the S&W. Really easy to conceal.

“This is a great gun for da fence.” 😂
My favorite internet shooting companion
I’ve been thinking about getting this and keeping it in my purse because of the safety feature which lowers chance of it going off accidentally substantially.
While I'm generally a fan of S&W, my better half bought the Shield EZ and absolutely hated it. FTF w/basic 115 gr. range ammunition, grip-safety had to have some good pressure to allow it to fire...not something you want in a carry gun or any firearm you're staking your life on. She disliked it so much, she traded it in 6 days later and took the hit.
To each their own, I guess. Thanks for the reviews.
I think she should check out the Equalizer. I have one and it doesn't take much at all to engage the grip safety, it's hardly noticeable for me.
Hickok45 must be enshrined as a National Monument to American Marksmanship, long live the KING !
Been awhile since we’ve seen some pot smokin
I just got one a few days ago. It’s quite thin for a double stack (it’s not just that hickok’s hands are big). And yes it’s fiddly to get the slide off. Hope that changes with break in.
Keep goin Hickock....got the wife the 380EZ then got me a new SD9, little heavey, year later got myself the M&P Sheild 9 plus. Oh my my, such a great piece. Just a tad bit smaller than the Equalizer. Same difficulty takin down. Slide release is very hard on mine. Needs more break in. 3 S&W now & may look into this Equalizer next. 3 mags, easier slide, grip safety, 9mm, whats not to like. Keep busting them b-pins.....
Me likey! That thing sounds like a higher caliber than a 9!
Yeah you would've expected a 10
saw a lady buy one of these at Bass Pro on the 3rd of Dec and it was $500, then the shift manager said a online site had them for $449. She walked out with that for $449 which is a great price for these type firearms.
I picked one up because the Beretta 9mm I wanted was "Out of Stock" the next day. Got it on sale with some ammo for $550 an was hoping not to spend more then that period!~
Was looking for something that had lil-recoil and the lil slid protection is also a plus, I have been bitten by the slide of a 9mm in the past. An the 3 magazines is also a plus!~
Not a fan of internal hammers with the exception of a good 5.7. Or striker fired like his beloved blocks erm I mean Glocks. I myself will always gravitate towards a good DA/SA pistol. Something like the Sig and most of their P series or a FN FNX .45 tactical or FNX 9 as well as many CZ's. Exposed hammers.
But I do have tons of respect for Hickok45. I believe he is the perfect firearm channel for all shooters to follow for a proper and safe learning experience .
Only man i ever seen to miss his target but yet hit a target at the same time
Hickok that equalizer once it's apart seems to be very similar to my Shield +. I will have to look in the stores and check one out first hand! Great video as always!
Thank you for the video! Took wife to look at it yesterday at local shop. She personally didn't like the palm safety... also looked at sig p 365 she liked the way it felt better. Decisions to make lol. Personally enjoy my S&W 2.0. Thanks again
I cant stand the look of those grip safeties on polymer pistols, i wouldnt buy one just because of them, i also dont like the Springfield ones either
Thinking of getting this because I want to start Appendix carrying. Don't want to shoot my dk off so the grip safety appeals to me.
I must be the weird one, but I like the thin grip and grip safety, but without the thumb safety.
Hickok45, being a bit grayer than some shooters. Never stated much, how he liked / disliked the easy rack slide. I am sure he has plenty of hand strength, being a seasoned shooter. But, I thought he may have expounded on that point, for his friends older than he is! I like the gun. It checks many of the boxes for me. I want to go handle one, and see just how it feels in the hands.
Those talon rubber sandpaper grips are the jam. I love them.
Why it's great to hear that it's "too slim" the handle, is for think of this design in 45 auto, or even 10mm. Double stacks of these usually tend to be too large.
Soon as I saw the grip safety and thumb safety I thought 45
I'm still gonna purchase one when my metal 2.0 comes in but wish they didn't billboard the slide. They are usually pretty good about not being to gaudy.
Dang Mr HickOk45 i just purchased a new gun today lol please don't make me purchase another one awesome 👏 😎 video as always keep up the amazing work Happy Holidays everyone
I didn't know AMF still existed. They used to make lots of sporting goods and i believe owned harley davidson for a while. Btw, i have a 80's series 1911 with manual safety that activates the firing pin block. Didn't know that was weird for 1911's. I thought all of them from that era had them.
...evidently the have yet said 'Adios My Friends' to the business world
As a female, I love it! Looks pretty cool to me.
I have one of these. Very reliable, accurate, and minimal recoil. I don't have any issues with the slide though. Maybe defective? Not sure but mine comes right off.
Makes for a nice start of a winter season day for me to see you again with a new S&W I wasn't aware existed! I'll be carrying on with my day with my gen 4 g23 in my waistband ! I once heard you say it's your favorite GK. It is mine!! Thanks Hickok
I wonder if it is still his favorite pistol?
Cocked and blocked
BTW, you sir may have already covered the topic of racking a stiff slide.. One of my older friends going back about 30 years.. His gf then, and wife now, had issues. He bought large sights (I'd probably call them suppressor class now days)... He taught her how to rack it (It was a steel S&W 9mm - don't recall the model) by using her pocket.. Just push down on the pocket. Me personally.. I will NEVER be caught having to move a slide to shoot.. I don't believe in self defense with a gun I have to charge on the fly... Like I said, you probably have covered this, and most people that really know firearms probably do as well.. Just chatting for those trying to figure out what works best for small hands, etc.
All that's missing is an integral trigger lock and the S&W layers will have designed the perfect handgun.
I love that statement. It's not a potato chip, that was funny, great video as usual thank you sir.
Test fired the equalizer at my local gun range and I don't like it ....... but that's my opinion. Go test it before you get it
Have you shot the EZ? Thoughts?
If you shot my first gen Smith & Wesson M&P 40 subcompact, you'd have a different idea about pistols that were hard to rack !!
Yeah - No Kidding
Kind of funny to hear Hickok be a little embarrased missing a few shots as he reviews a pistol he doesn't own.
Im glad i watched your video again. Im in the market for another edc with more capacity. After seeing the equalizer perform, ill pass and buy the Sig P365 xl
No more choices in Canada at this time. Great video though! Gonna have to visit some ranges in the US next year😊
Definitely, Come and see us. Where about wouldyou be coming?
A good looking gun.i had one in my hands a month ago.i would buy this gun .but I got the shield it's good . 🤙
Thank you for all the information I really enjoyed watching your content.
Had a hard time deciding If I should get the shield plus OR or the equalizer as my first gun. But ended up choosing the equalizer just because it already comes the 3 mags out the box, Optic ready from the factory and has the picatinny rail.
The grip safety doesn't bother me when dry firing since i'm new to the scene but hopefully I can get it to the range soon for some practice
many many thanks 👍👍👍
The grip safety does take getting use to (I'd prefer not to have it). However, with practice it's not an issue, really.
Hickok45 IS the Equalizer. Forget your guns. Just carry him with you wherever you go and you'll be safe.
My favorite pistol currently.
