    The main issue with the GTX 970 and cards from a similar time period is that they are very likely to lose driver support soon (within around a year from now). Granted the impact won't be immediate however this might cause issues with any game that's being actively updated (this applies to live service games especially) and it might also cause issues if you're using Windows 11 as, unlike Windows 10, it will continue to receive major updates which in the past have caused compatibility issues with older drivers. This doesn't just apply to the Nvidia 9-series of course however given the length of driver support for Kepler GPUs it's going to happen sooner rather than later.

      It rather depends on your definition of "out of date". Whether it be 5%, 10%, 50% or 200% performance improvements, it makes previous products outdated. Of course, businesses love customers who like to buy their products on a regular basis. One thing is certain, nothing in the world of computing stays current for very long. They get to sell "spenders" full price products months before the price drops substantially, when they bring out a slightly faster or improved version that the same customers "must have". 😁

    I've found locally a GTX 1060 (3GB) GPU for $26. Only problem it has is that the fan always ramps up to full speed so I hooked a case fan to the heatsink of the GPU and tested it and it's all good and quiet.

    I still have a 970 in an old backup PC that I use for streaming. Don't game with it anymore, but I think it's still a pretty good gaming card if your game settings are within the limits of the HW.

  • @DaveSimonH
    @DaveSimonH Год назад

    A fairly cheap way to get a decent card. I had a look there at a comparison video of a 970, 1060 & 1650 and the 970 seemed to be fairly close to the 1650. Some games for the older card, some for the new but pretty close on average.

  • @SteamPunk96
    @SteamPunk96 Год назад

    Yeah, bit of a nostalgic card at this point honestly, really was quite a hardware-transitory era of PC and Console gaming at the time.

    I think second hand/older components are still a fantastic option when it comes to pc gaming. There's so much you can get away with compared to the latest and greatest. Sure some of it starts to show it's age, but the price to performance ratio is insane. You only wanna game at 1080p and have an average of 60fps? Your options are abundant. You don't even need to buy a new computer. Just get an old dell optiplex or Lenovo Thinkstation, upgrade the power supply, throw in a graphics card and ssd, and you're golden. I myself just snagged a Lenovo Thinkstation with an i7-6700 and 8 gigs of ram for $98 and an EVGA RTX 2060 KO for $150 from ebay. It pairs for a great budget experience and you can still play the latest games just fine.
    Don't think you have to spend $800-$1,000 just to get into pc gaming. You can easily do it for $400 or less, especially if you're not sure you want to fully transition from console. Those fancy cases with RGB lighting are just for show and don't improve performance whatsoever.

    • @jamesgodfrey1322
      @jamesgodfrey1322 Год назад

      RGB lighting add nothing but appearance it nice but the extra cash is better used on CPU or GPU if not worry save money get basic case with fans build and golden and with supply over spec as as save you in year to came and not need to upgrade it if more power hunger parts

    I just picked up a Gigabyte Windforce 970 for 30 USD for a budget gaming rig. Have about 100 bucks into the setup altogether. Great for who I'm building it for. Mainly for Fortnite, Minecraft, Overwatch, etc. Good to know it can also stretch a little bit too if they want to.

    I had a PNY 970 sitting in my desktop paired with a 4770K until just last month. I actually got a small check as part of the “only 3.5 gigabytes vram” class action lawsuit. I can’t remember how much it was for, though. Not a lot.

    Can we get more benchmarks without res scaling technology? Or maybe tests with and without scaling techs? Feels like every benchmark uses scaling tech these days and it feels disingenuous to the actual performance of the cards at certain resolutions. Like 1080p with FSR is not 1080p for example.

    • @RandomGaminginHD
      @RandomGaminginHD  Год назад +1

      Yeah I’m thinking about doing native and FSR benchmarks in videos. I tend to use it in these budget videos as it helps get the most out of cards and would be useful to potential buyers

    It holds up very well for being an almost decade old GPU, especially combined with FSR. Personally I would turn Cyberpunk, Spider-Man and Hogwarts Legacy down to low settings to get a more consistent 60 FPS experience but that's me, and lock anything that can't get near that no matter what to 30 (like TLOU).

    My wifes pc uses that exact GPU with an i7 3770 and 16 gigs of ram. As we only play Destiny 2 this setup is great with 70 to 80 fps. Not bad at all for a quite an old system.
