  • Porthleven Storm | Massive Waves And Spectacular Stormy Seas At Porthleven, Cornwall, UK
    Porthleven, Cornwall, UK, massive waves and stormy seas at high tide.
    I decided to pop down to Porthleven (which is only about 20 min's away from where I live) as I had heard on the local news that stormy seas and massive waves were expected all along the coast of Cornwall. Find out more here: www.jvscornwall...

    Porthleven is renowned as a great place to go and storm watch.
    This was the first time I'd been to Porthleven during stormy conditions and I have to admit I wasn't quite prepared for how rough and stormy the seas actually were.
    The coastguards were out to make sure every[one was safe. You know the weather is bad and the seas are going crazy if the Coastguards are there making sure everyone is safe as they make their way along the harbour walls.

    When I was a kid and lived here a wave took a police car and several one ton granite blocks back into the sea. Rip the police. Walking around the harbour in extreme bad weather is exceptionally dangerous.

    Happens every single year.

    Spectacular!! I always love watching an angry sea (at least from the safety and comfort of my computer screen!) How is the protective barrier across the harbour mouth put into position? It certainly did it's job well that day!

    • @JVsCornwall
      @JVsCornwall  4 года назад

      Thanks for your comment. The harbour barrier is comprised of several wooden ‘baulks’ as they are known and I believe they are lifted and stacked in place by a crane which sounds very time consuming and laborious but in storm season I’m assuming the fishing boats stay in the sheltered harbour for quite some time so it’s not like the baulks are put in place and removed on a regular basis. This is my assumption, can anyone else shed any light on this? I found a very old video on RUclips of the wooden baulks being put into place in Mousehole Harbour so I guess it’s the same principle. In 2014 the baulks at Porthleven we’re breached and damaged which caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

      The majority of those cars are residents who just have nowhere else to park, however there were one or two who would park there just so they could sit in their car with waves going over them. The people who did this were moved along by the coastguards while I was down there

    Must be some well designed sea defenses for the water to be so calm in the harbor at 3:50

      Yes, they have massive solid timber groynes that protect the harbour. One year they were breached and all of the boats in the harbour were destroyed.

    It’s not a big storm it’s just high tide in the winter months. Happens every year, no big deal. Wise up snowflakes.

    I have to say that the worst thing a person can do to their car is to let it be exposed to the sea. It will rust up with 24 hours. Brake rotors are bare iron and anything else that can corrode, will do so very fast.

      Yep, especially those just above sea level. There’s a few cliff top properties around Cornwall that are gradually going to end up in the sea due to erosion.
