Ep.2 - Building our Expedition Sailboat - Plasma Cutting our Roof

- Join us this week as we tackled one of the biggest modification for our arctic ready, expedition sailboat project. This work wasn’t planned. It was kind of a last-minute decision, but we are pleased to have finally decided to do it.
We also witness some very cool northern lights, and we have unexpected visitors ... they love putting Jasmine’s patience to the test (our Karelian Bear Dog).

Cool project. I can tell already this will be good
@chuckquint7913 Thank you so much for your cheerful words! 😊 It means a lot!
Removing an aerodynamic feature for a slab, windward facing structure, especially for a boat that is expected to cope with adverse weather, is a back ward step imho.
The amount of backwards pressure can be enormous.
@dnomyarnostaw Thanks for your concern.
We did our due diligence and we are happy with the choice we made.
On l’utilise beaucoup.
@ j’imagine 👍!!!
l don’t know a lot of RUclipsrs from Quebec. It’s nice to see the work you’re doing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so very much!
Merci!!!
Very cool project, nice detailed work. I like the shirt, cheers
Thank you so much 😊
Looks great guys! Can’t wait to see more!
Aww! Thank you so much Kasey! 🥰
Awesome project, my old friend. Good to see you are still involved in cool adventures!
Thank you so much old friend! You too are doing lots of cool adventures!
I start renovating my steel 30ft sailboat coming April and also on the brink of ordering a laser welder. Very currious for next episode...
That’s very exciting! We will show the laser 3 in 1 machine on the next episode, but the following ones will show even more capabilities (like cleaning the rust). We do have a contact for that specific company we bought the machine from. They ship world wide and according to our rep, they could offer a better price for our followers (no kickback for us … just a bonus for you guys). We will be confirming that soon.
I cruised a steel Chatham 33' pilothouse cutter for 7 years including a 3 year circumnavigation in the high latitudes north and south. Steel is great, but aluminum is the ultimate IMO.
We used to have a Chatham 33’. Good boat.
We agree, steel in great, but aluminum is the ultimate. We just couldn’t find anything within our budget.
One commentator said that the near vertical cabin windows might break if things on deck go walk about. I don’t agree. The reason naval architects slope the front wall of the cabin is to deflect water, and extreme slopes like the original on yours was more aesthetic I assume. Your new front has a slight slope, so look to install thick shatterproof glazing, say 1/2” thick. The thing about expedition boats is they need to be very strong, not like many recreational production boats, that pretend to be floating cottages. I’d recommend you consult with a naval architects.
@einarquay Thank you very much for your comment! Indeed, expedition boats have other needs. Security and functionality trump aesthetic. We got this windows situation covered.
@@SailingWildRaven Functional ? Are you going to steer through them ? In that case, a drip overhang would have been good. 30+ knots of wind and water on the nose will test "functional"
This is a great find! Do you have information on the designer/builder of the hull? With this new roof, it's looking very much like a DIY Ovni 370; one of my dream boats! Very cool...
@sanchezero Thanks a lot! 😊 The design is from "Gilbert Caroff" and this particular model is a "Bulle de Soleil 37". The hull was built in Quebec.
We definitively have similar tastes. 🙂 Love the Ovni models (the more recent ones with the new roof design), but our ultimate sailboat would probably be the Garcia Exploration 45.
@@SailingWildRaven a lot of awesome in the Garcia, but it's just too big for me. Not that I'd turn it down...
Can I buy your laser welder? When you're done? I have a 40ft steel hulll boat that i'm restoring currently.
@SV_SheDevil Very cool! What’s your sailboat model?
We are definitely going to be selling our laser machine once done (should be towards the end of the year … or sooner if we get a ahead on our timeline). We are in Southern Ontario. Are you in the region?
It will be great up until something left on the foredeck smashes that window & your boat floods.
Thanks for your concern. Actually, it is safer with the new design as the opening will way be smaller and better protected (compared to the previous design). Additionally, it will prevent glare (better view), add ventilation, create room to have a self-tacking rail for the inner stay sail, and no one could accidentally step, smash of fell on the windows. Expedition sailboats like the Garcia Exploration 45 or the Alubat Ovni 370/430/490 (just to name a few) have a similar design. They were all made with the same intent. We personally never heard of those windows been smashed. We have no second thoughts on this modification.
@@SailingWildRaven The Garcia Exploration 45 has reverse forward angled windows, and the Alubat Ovni 370 has sloped windows with a weather overhang. No Naval architect in the world has slab faced forward windows.
