Well, this video ended up way more negative than I wanted it to - can anyone recommend me some GOOD Arcane theory videos I might be able to have fun with?
I was going to ask you that same question. This is usually the place I go for in depth analysis since you make an effort to at least touch on differing perspective when necessary
Five by Five Takes Arcane Parallels: Jinx and Cait video is super interesting analysis that mostly focused on season 1 and feels so relevant now that season 2 has started airing! I cant recommend it enough
This isn't Jayce's doing, this is the inherent classism of PIltover, they just don't even see Victor, he is invisible, for if they SEE him and his accomplishments, it makes them the bad guy.
Just because Victor assisted with perfecting Jayce's research, that is still far from being the originator of it or even an equal contributor. Remember, Jayce had this dream since a very young age. He literally did years upon years of research before Victor was ever a part of it. People are not wrong in attributing Jayce as the primary visionary behind the invention of Hextech.
The council chambers not having any handicap accessibility was my favorite detail in act one, perfect metaphor for Piltover. A situation they could easily remedy with their resources but they never felt the need to because "well... WE don't need it."
What's even more ironic is that if Salo lived in Zaun, they could've easily just hooked him up with new legs, it's very telling that _prosthetics_ is one of the only fields Zaun seems to be far ahead of Piltover
@@void-creature Best bit about the prosthetics, once Viktor goes back and opens his lab in Zaun they become better than they already are. From chunky, bulky things to much closer to "human sized, but metal" with fine control. Even as the machine herald Viktor has always wanted to help people.
The thing i hate the most is how he starts with "arcane might be the biggest show NETFLIX ever made " Netfflix did NOT make Arcane ,Fortiche and riot did
Can't blame the general populace for mixing that up considering it's hard to tell the difference from the consumer side. But they should know a bit better
netflix is only responsible for the distribution, production cost is from riot games themselves. if netflix wants to discontinue streaming the series, riot can simply find other streaming platform
@@keiran9114 did you just... commented confidently about something you had exactly 0 idea about because Netflix didn't "fund arcane", they're NOT the producers of the show, the JUST distributors, the entire funding and production is 100% on Riot and their employees I beg you to actually do some research about things you talk about lmao
@@keiran9114 to my knowledge, riot funded Arcane, netflix distributed it and advertised it ( even though riot actually funded far more of the advertising than netflix) and fortiche animated it. Not saying netflix didn't fund any of the production, but the majority is from riot iirc
Found it a bit funny how he only mentions Jayce as the creator of hextech bc ironically that's kinda how a lot of characters treat it in the show, especially the council
It’s tragic but also one of my favourite parts about Viktor. He isn’t jealous of the spotlight or the fame, and his falling out with Jayce is over ideology and principles rather than being scorned or forgotten
@@purpleberry3564Yeah, I got pretty annoyed when the council made Jayce a councilor in season 1 while simultaneously not even acknowledging Viktor's existence even though he's right there in the room with them. And then Mel does the same later when talking about the weaponization of Hextech to Jayce. (Definitely not a criticism of the show though, it's quite effective story telling imo)
@@inquisitor9207 Agreed. It feels almost subversive, like they're intentionally misleadingly setting him up to snap at some point out of jealousy/anger about being ignored, but it never happens. I really like that
I mean, that's how things always happen to play out. Just think of Apple and it's two Steves. There's Steve Jobs, and then there's Steve Wozniak, the respective Jayce and Victor.
You step into MY house?! With MY toxic lesbians?! and presume to lecture ME about the lore of a video game that has stolen 10 years of my adut life and I refuse to play for my mental health?!
15 minutes in and THIS IS RIOT STELLARI ERASURE. She pushed SO hard when she was at Riot for K/DA to become reality. It wasn't a company. It wasn't gamer bro men. IT WAS A WOMAN!!!!! (tbc i am yelling at film theorists)
Honestly they don't nail it in enough. In my experience you're only punished for not citing things in college and that's why there's so much misinformation being spread.
Wouldn't be the first time a theorist channel did that unfortunately. The quality of their fact checking went down the drain when they started doing weekly uploads years ago
Game Theory has ALWAYS been vaguely palatable junk food imo. even as a kid I recall all of their "classic" videos kinda just being silly, commercial children's entertainment without much there there. which is fine. I'm a Transformers fan¹; I'm not judging anyone who has watched or continues to watch them. I watched them as a kid and liked 'em. but I'm just sayin', they've always been trashy, sensational, all frosting and no cake-and not as well-produced, thought-provoking, etc. as sincerely good video game video essayists. (your T B's, your Transparency's, your Monty Zander's, your tangomushi's, and the like.) so when people complain about them dipping in quality, it just sounds to me like when people complain about Burger King fries not tasting as good as they used'ta. sure, you can tell-but it's not like they were all that good before either, lol. ¹that being said, Transformers has actually been incredibly good, especially the comics at IDW and now Skybound/Image (which might be my favorite ongoing comic currently?). but they are, nakedly, extremely commercial children's entertainment and I still love a lot of its trashier media (like Energon or the initial Bayformers film).
My biggest gripe are in fact not the inaccuracies, but that this video is just a summary of what happened with the Riot Narrative across the years, with nothing else added, so it's not a theory or anything that ressembles one
I think this is actually good in the broad sense. Not all of Arcane audiences are lore addicts that want to watch a 4 hour Tbskyen video about the cloak that Ambessa wears. (I do, but not everyone does.)
I understand that, but it's a growing gripe of mine with the theorist channels, that they sometimes just rehash info other people already told @@rayeiswriting4372
Honestly that's been my issue with their videos recently. If it's not a fandom they're deep in, they basically just do a summary. And even sometimes with fandoms they are involved in, they just regurgitate other people's theories. Which is good that people are finally getting extensive credit, but like, what happened to making your own theories guys?
Its a shame that this is the only Film Theory video about Arcane because now I can’t make a “Mrs Caitlyn a second theory has hit Piltover’s council” joke
I gave up on the whole "Theory" set of channels when I realized how often they would just- say an incorrect or misconstrued thing, then treat that incorrect thing as gospel for the rest of the video
I agree fully with this. Legit, the first thing I did when I watched Film Theory's vid was think "You should REALLY get someone like TB Skyen or Necrit to collab with you on this because BOTH of them HAVE ALREADY MADE THIS POINT AND BETTER". Anyway, I don't mean to throw the people at Theorists under the bus, but their quality for fact checking has really gone downhill - even before MatPat left. You can tell that since he's let so many cooks into the kitchen, the focus and point of so many of their vids are just, so fucking all over the place. I still watch them every once in a while, but now that it doesn't have the draw of MatPat's charisma behind it, I can tell a lot of people are starting to jump off the bandwagon since he was the main hook for many people liking the content. Great break down of this vid Skyen :D
I think it's just dependent on the specific video in terms of "their quality and fact checking has gone downhill". This video in particular is bad, but they still make really good videos most of the time. . The problem here is that they're mostly reporting on factual situations about what happened in League's lore, and almost none of it is correct.
They've *never* let fact checking get in the way of a good narrative. Or a bad narrative. If you ever want to pull your hair out, watch MatPat's old video on Super Metroid, and then look up what planets Metroid 2 and Super Metroid respectively takes place on. Hint: it's two *different* planets. Not the *same* planet.
As someone who used to love the Theorists as a kid back when Game Theory was a show about science... this was painful to watch. Time has been heartless to them

@@peacepham7838 I know I get that. I was commenting on the guy who called the him a lonely person. Was uncalled for and a personal attack for no reason.
I’m a fan, but as soon as I saw the “guest speaker” wasn’t necrit I was like “hell nah they going to get the lore wrong”. Guess it turns out I’m right yeeesh why didn’t they do proper research. And yea league never actually cleaned up or anything. I believe sona still speaks to the summoner (been awhile since I played her)
Something I've picked up on over the years with Matpat and his company is that they often run on pretty tight schedules. Matpat has talked about times when a video HAD to go up, so he and the team crunched to get it out. I get the vibe they don't leave themselves enough time to do good fact-checking cause this definitely isn't the first time they've really bungled the lore in one of their theories. I also suspect for the same reasons that if they realize late enough into the production of a video that they got something wrong, they usually still put it up anyway. At least in terms of Film and Game theory, it can be pretty hit or miss on whether they actually get the lore right for the media they're covering. I do think they should reach out to people with more expertise to fact check their early scripts. If they factored it into their schedules, it could do a lot to remedy their lore accuracy problems
I'm... A little disappointed? Because there's plenty to talk about Arcane on it's own. :c they used to compare and contrast research and quotes and such... Oh well.
they never actually had good research, every single one of their theories comes from the perspective of a cis-het white man. They ignore queer subtext, they ignore what the shows and movies are actually trying to say, they broach every single one of their theories with the same mindset of never looking at subtext.
I really like how you constantly reaffirm that it's the workers not the company that spearhead the creativity at Riot. It might seem like a nitpick but it's an important point to make, especially with the constant layoffs these days.
Man what would I give for a 5 hour video going over the lore and its changes chronologically. Like, going over EVERYTHING, every retcon, every champion who destroyed another champions lore, EVERY question created by updates, all the ways it was fixed - everythingg
I really had a problem with them saying: "The show Netflix made" Because just how they keep saying, riot cooked or riot had the idea... It credits the wrong people. Netflix did even less then riot (the company) on this. And fortiche needs to get the glory for the effort they put into it. I heard that line and clicked away, that was the second I knew they didn't do their research right.
You can’t judge the quality of a 15 minute video based off one sentence that holds some truth to it. Arcane wouldn’t exist without netflix. Hard stop. Did fortiche deserve more credit sure. But saying you knew they didn’t do their research because you didn’t like how they phrased something is kinda wild
@MegaMighty what do you mean arcane wouldn't exist without Netflix? They had absolutely nothing to do with it other then being the streaming platform and some of the marketing. And further down the video has "missinformation" throughout. I really love these theory channels, I will continue to watch them. But this video wasn't for me (on the film theory channel). And yes I was disappointed because of that line
I feel that the Theorists miss the mark when they do these narrative focused videos since they always want to force a twist so they will ignore official material for the sake of that twist, but most of the time the twist they make up is the most groan worthy thing ever
Their For Honor video causes me physical pain to watch. Just about everything in it is blatantly incorrect, and just a twenty second scan of a wikipedia article would have shown that.
@@drikeatmey The entire point of the video is: who would actually win in real life, a knight, viking, or samurai? But then it is just filled with blatant misinformation (Scandinavia is a frozen hellscape where nothing grows; vikings ran around naked with no armour; vikings had crude weaponry; suggesting that a sword can cut through maille; etc), and Matpat just arbitrarily does the "my favourite one is the best" thing, giving the samurai the benefit of an entire retinue and implying that knights and vikings had no tactical ability; saying samurai would win because they had money, when knights were also nobility; changing what weapons they have access to on the fly, etc. I could go on, pretty much the entire historical youtuber community made response videos breaking down everything wrong with it.

This whole time I was waiting for the thesis of the theory and I didn't get the point of all this until the very very end of their video. It all felt like one giant preamble, the opening paragraph of an MLA formatted essay from high school stretched into eternity. Genuinely there was no theorizing here, it was matter of fact conjecture derived from a wild misunderstanding of League of Legends and its lore.

This is apparently just how game/film theory works now. They recently put out a video on the Book of Bill where apparently NOBODY had read the whole book, they separated it into chunks between the crew, and they hadn’t cross referenced anything with each other.
I’ve also noticed with film theory’s new video on the book of Bill. They failed to acknowledge the queer subtext between Ford and Bill. Additionally, they had failed previously in crediting a Reddit for one of their theories as of late. I don’t know what happened with film theory, but something needs to change.
I think they need to change their upload schedules to once every 1 1/2 - 2 weeks to give themselves more time to research. I understand that might screw some things over with the algorithm but you know, quality over quantity.
Acknowledging subtext you believe to be queer coded isn’t an issue of quality or research that’s just a subjective nitpick Failing to credit one Reddit post is also just a minor slip up. How do either of those things mean that something about film theory needs to change ?
@@MegaMighty While these are minor points in the grand scheme of things, my point still stands in that they need to be a bit more thorough when it comes to research. For example: with the book of bill discussion, its not just my perception, but also the wider fandom of gravity falls' belief. There is blatant evidence that Bill and Ford, at the very least, had a very close emotional connection; of which was not acknowledged within the theory. (tldr of the evidence; when you type in 'divorce" in the book of bill website, you get the logo of the bar Bill went to on the page "loosing sixer"). Whether or not it is queer is up to interpretation, but acknowledging that it is the perception of the wider fan base is significant (especially considering there are canonical queer couples within the show).
If you have a channel that is for the fans and by the fans, acknowledgement and crediting of fan theories and evidence is paramount, hence my initial post.
I have been unthrilled with the way the Theory channels have been conducting themselves moving forward. Their ability to research or create content that actually makes a worthy contribution to the discussion and doesn't present bias or misinformation is increasingly becoming rare. It's gotten to the point where I no longer check in on any Theorist content across any of their channels. But I admit, the one that pisses me off the most as the most egregious in this regard is Style Theory. I could go on a whole rant...
I thought their video was going to talk about how it retcons beloved lore of previous champions like Skarner and Ekko and all the negative repercussions Arcane being canon can have, but their argument ended up being that Riot putting all their effort into Arcane will negatively affect league OTHER universes? Not the MAIN canon? Why did they focus on the skin universes? Since when people/rioters gave a crap about skin universes that aren’t hyper popular? I really think they just rushed this one to ride the hype of the premiere of Arcane 2 without putting much thought into it
Yeah at the start of the video I was confused why they were brinding up skins so much, but then I guess it ended up being the entire point of the theory? That Arcane somehow messes with "dark star" skinlines or whatever??
@@brookejon3695 but it doesn't they just put that in there cause it was idea someone had without thinking of the consequences of said backstory. it makes alot of the pilotover characters look like ignorant assholes if they don't know, tyranncal despots if they do, and in the case of Serphina, completed eye tilting that she KNOWS the situation and just...blows it off
44:02 the theory channels have always had a problem with misinformation and fact checking. I will never forget how badly they dropped the ball on the mass effect game theory.
The part about other skinlines "taking a backseat" to arcane is so misinformed, do they think arcane is anywhere close to riot’s main source of income now?? For riot, arcane is just a nice vehicle to rope more people into playing LoL the game…. TO THEN BUY SKINS THERE. Thats Riot’s actual source of income here, they would never drop that for anything
Even I, who knows basically nothing of the League of Legends lore aside from Arcane, a comic about Jinx and Ziggs and the Arcane-related comic-esque cutscenes from the "Path of Champions" game, came out of this video like "Okay...where was the theory?". Certainly not their best work.
Literally me too!! I've never played lol, only lore I know is mostly related to arcane and k/da, and I was watching this with the same thoughts "..and????"
That comic was CURSED And now the thought of jinx being into Yordles has stained my brain forever…I mean the writers at arcane could maybe make it work buuuuut
@@tonydanatop4912 Personally, I didn't read their interaction as romantic. Moreso as a mutual thrill about having found someone, perhaps even the only other person, who understands and shares the same passions, in Ziggs case validating them as a result.
This happens a lot with their videos. They just give recaps or overviews and throw together something that cane barely be considered a theory at the end.
They are saying that the death of irl skin line in the game is literally the void in canon eating their multiverse which is really weird and is definitely not intended by riot. It’s riot fuckup that causes the skin line to die with no future release/stories
First, your Vtuber avatar looks great! Second, thank you for reacting to this video and pointing out all its innacuracies. Third, Fortiche Studio deserves way more recognition. They are the MVP.
Also, heartsteel not performing quite the way riot wanted them to and not getting enough sales and making enough money and therefor being cancelled is disturbingly close to real life boy bands
Reads like they wanted to make a video on Arcane to capitalise on the new season, but didn't have anything of substance to say, so they just put this out.
I like it when He neetpicks some details in his reactions. It just shows how much level of details you can capture and suddenly make statements out of it.
This is such a disappointment too cause like the film theorists using their platform could’ve exposed riot’s shitty business practices and mistreatment of employees to a wider audience using arcane as a jumping off point smh
Yeah since the theorist we’re bought there has been a lack of corporate criticism, it reminds me of the temu style theory video that just refused to talk about the child labor
I think that the central mistake they made in building this whole theory up was assuming that decisions made while thinking about PR or profit are somehow 1:1 to the impact those decisions have narratively. In essence, they saw what Riot has been doing as a company and tried to make it metatextual to the actual LoL lore.
We gotta keep in mind the target demographic. My 13 y/o nephew and all his little buddies are huge fans of that channel, and have been for years. I wish I could say it's harmless, but when that kind of "research" is taken as bible...it can get kinda ugly. Fun, but ugly.

That's mostly because the current hosts were part of the writers before he left for years. MatPat had long stopped writing the theories himself. 4 channels is too much. From what he mentioned, he still took part in the process, especially for FNAF, but he wasn't alone. Iirc some of the most iconicly controversial episodes were co-written by the current host! MatPat was just a voice and face, he was more involved in the business part of things along with appearing on GTLive. The quality downgrade is noticeable because we're not used to the new guys and they can't pull it off as well as him for now. Style and Food theory aren't as affected because they're less egregiously wrong, they're aware these aren't theories, and the hosts are good. Tbh this says a lot about the channels. Wonder if they'll keep going like that or try something new because the decline is starting to be felt
Some of The Film Theorists videos are genuinely baffling to me because they're not even reductive as much as I genuinely don't understand what the fuck they researched to reach some of their conclusions.
I'm glad to see that even without MatPat, the Theory channels still post theories that are completely out of touch with the lore they interact with. But at least when he said Sans was Ness, there was actually some point to that massive stretch.
Basically the UNIVERSE that acts as a BACKDROP to League of Legends ends up providing *general worldbuilding material* for Arcane to alchemize into a narrative.
That film theory video was so dumb 😂 I felt like I was being gaslit and everything just felt like a toddler trying to convince you that something is right when they actually have no idea what they’re talking about 💀
Maybe I'm just stretching it but I swear at the start of the video when they describe some of the skin lines it sounds sooooooo AI scripted, maybe that's why they implied cats vs dogs is relevant and stuff but idk that's just a Theory
Film Theory uploads an Arcane video: OMG, they are covering League of Legends and Arcane Lore! This is so awesome, I wonder who they are getting to guest star in this video? Necrit? Skyen? Nicholas J. Boi? or any of the LoL eggheads because it would be really stupid to cover the very complex and wide lore of the League of Legends universe WITHOUT a guide ... Me after the video: You ... are nothing but a fucking disappointment.
I mean even if they worked with any of them their is the chance that they just pull a Hollow Knight and do a theory on one of the many debunked theory that the game has even after having mossbag aka the Hollow Knight lore guy say Pale king is not the Knight
Yeah, Game Theory has never really been about making good theories. It used to be an excuse to teach kids about science and things, its always been a meme how bad their theories are.
I kind of wished they leaned more into the absurdist nature of their theories and made it more about the comedy of it than trying to claim they're doing legit theory crafting. I think the issue is that the viewers (and the Theorists themselves) are taking the content way too seriously, so when they get something wrong everyone gets mad about it. Would be fun if they did some purposefully ridiculous and outlandish theories and made the science/entertainment the main draw, rather than the theory itself.
9:27 Actually we do have "kinda" sources - Bridging the Rift series was talking about all ups and downs they went through. How higher-ups at riot just wanted to cancel the whole show. Sooo technically we have a proof
watch bridging the rift you will know why arcane almost got thrown and they even have to let go Fortiche talents at the beginning also that phrase applies more to concord than riot for riot its more like squize as much milk as you can from the players
@@rnielvhinsieans.elpidama6935 They didn't let go the talents, that's where the KDA and worlds video spawned from, the need for projects to keep the talent in until Arcane was properly greenlit once they got their footing.
I have so many problems with the Film theorists video, because they are literally just making shit up to create some kind of marvel style multiverse story that doesn't exist. They keep equating the Void and Dark Star as the same entity, they called what happened to the Brackern "cool", they pretend that the different skin universes interact with each other which they almost never do. This isn't even a theory, its just fan fiction.
9:20 In fact, even in Bridging the Rift they mention that what they wanted most was to cancel the project, because they saw it as something too risky. 16:42 If I'm not mistaken, Christian Linke himself gave the figure of 6 years.
Almost everything in the video reads like it was taken from an AI generated script. Its probably why they threw in a "void event in 2022" An AI would take speculation and accept that it DID happen.
I would like everyone to stop being surprised Game Theory videos are bad. They've always been crappy videos for children that don't really make sense but are still enjoyable to their target demographic or anyone who doesn't take it seriously. The only time their videos ever end up correct is for storytelling-by-easter-egg stories like mascot horror and analog horror, since the way their analysis works is antithetical to conventional storytelling.
The part about how they "fixed" the Hextech lore rankled me so bad. They did not FIX anything! They disconnected Skarner from Hextech (ruining a really compelling idea) and tweaked Seraphine's lore. The origin of Hextech is now unknown in both League and Arcane. That isn't fixing the lore, that's removing one element without replacing it. Also, no mention of Aurelion Sol as one of the endgame bosses of Runeterra? Ya know, the giant space dragon who constantly talks about how he wants to smite this insignificant spec of a planet?
Easiest way to defeat Aurelion Sol is tell him "wow, you're *obsessed* with those mortal Runeterrans, huh" and he'd immediately deny the fact out of pride, and ignore Runeterra forever /hj He's such an ass, I love him
In fairness to the "removing one element without replacing it" point, I think Arcane season 2 is where we're going to be getting answers on what the new origin for Hextech is hence why they haven't said anything about in order to not spoil the reveal in the show. Hextech and the mysterious(and likely void connected) purple goop that comes out of it plays too big of a role for it to not be a plot point in the finale, so I imagine we're going to find out its true nature and source by either the end of Act 2 or beginning of Act 3. As far for disconnecting the bracken from Hextech, I do agree that it was a super compelling idea but I also view this as one of those "Clone Trooper bio-chips" situations where its sort of necessary evil to remove it from the story. As powerful and unique as the metaphor is, there's really no way to have Piltover characters use it without them either never finding out the truth about its origins or looking like complete monsters for willing using the souls of an oppressed indigenous people to power their toaster oven. It places a huge writing constraint on what kinds of stories they can tell with hextech since at the end of the day hextech has to be something people can see Vi or Jayce reasonably using. So retconning the bracken out and replacing its origin with something else is sort of necessary in order for the uncovering of Hextech's origins to play a important role in Arcane's story.
@@trevordavis6830 i disagree, the counterargument is that the ethics of using brackerns as a power source is one of the key narratives of PnZ. Camille is responsible from keeping the truth sealed, Seraphine prior to retcon could actually combat that. There were artificial hextechs and chemtech as a byproduct, so again, problems of ethical consumption. In the end, narrative could lead to alternative cleaner powersources, rectifying the brackern situation, and a better society, albeit not as seemingly technologically advanced, one that develops more slowly but mindfully It could be beautiful just as much as it could be tragic in case Skarner dies and actually everyone is not listening, and there is an end of the world. There is a lot to explore here, but as TB said, the subject is too strong for the game (and Arcane too would implode on itself having to bear one more theme)
Obviously the "theory" itself is wrong but for me the weirder detail is just that... These guys aren't funny? Like, it's not just that their jokes don't land, it's that they're barely functional as jokes. That ending bit where the guy goes "I guess those universes have to be... BETTER!" while showing a "git gud" macro particularly stands out; I get that the League playerbase is famously toxic, and you could easily expect other players to demand you go rifle through your couch cushions for some spare skill, but stating that point blank, or even referencing it, does not make for a joke. Just say "multiverse diff" if you want to do that.
50:50 "weren't comfortable having an actual structural critique of colonialism" Ah, just like how they clearly weren't very comfortable with a serious critique about classism and worker uprisings so Arcane abruptly dropped that whole plotline to rush EVERYTHING to where Noxus is the real bad guys and Zaun has to assist Piltover to defeat them as a "greater threat" to unite them instead of an actual, fundamental, societal change. Make no mistake: Every major decision in the battle against Noxus/Viktor was made by Piltover by way of Jayce, Caitlyn and Mel; only because Jinx and Ekko weren't a part of *any* plans did they actually win.
The Theorists and Riot are like an unstoppable force and an inmovable object its basically "we will make any detail matter no matter how unimportant and forced it is" vs "we will rewrite our lore entirely"
My brain hurt after their video. I even had MORE critiques than Skyen mentioned here, it’s absolutely ridiculous that they’re putting this out and there’s thousands if not millions of people who will have a fundamental misunderstanding based on a video that sounds like…a summary of this information based on a friend of a friend who knows about the League IP.
bruh! this was so bad... glad someone is talking about it, cuz film theorists needs to either take it down cuz misinformation or make an updated video about it.

This kinda pisses me off because when matpat used to review theories on GTLive, they would pick apart anything that presented speculation as fact and this is the same thing they've don't here. I don't blame the theorist team specifically, I have a feeling this is the new company that owns the theorists channels, they probably wanted to capitalise on Arcane's release and didn't give them enough time to research. As much as the presenters annoyed me i this video you have to remember they are just employees to a wider company now
I left my personal take on Bluesky of what I think of this video but I stand the best part of the video is the last phrase "Arcane may be the best thing that happened to the League IP as a frahchise, and the WORST thing that happened to it's universe" the way this video (and everyone else) brushed off all the ways Riot has shown us how little they actually care about the lore of the IP, Narrative was seen as disposable before, it is seen now with Arcane and unless some of the upper execs heads roll off, so will be the next 15 years
What even was the theory at the center of the video...? 😅 I grew up watching MatPat and when it came to his more insane videos, he still married himself to the source material. That way he could have all the knowledge to be theatrical and crafty with. This is just, like...an essay a kid would've made in middle school trying to meet the word quota.
9:40 if you watched the bridging the rift they said it themselves that it got put on hold because rioters told them that it sucked so they hired showrunners to guide them and made it again but less shitty as Christian said
I think the main problem of this and other similar videos is a dramatisation. If you have a theory, it should be big, it should be grand, it should be important. And their conclusion about “Arcane is so popular, so the Void is now eating other LoL universes because they are unpopular” is a symptom of that. It can’t be “Well, Arcane is now canon, so the main continuity is having some problems regarding the lore of some characters”, no, too small. These videos require some sort of existential threat and nothing less.
Love it when game theory say they're bringing in an expert on the subject, but then they don't understand half of the subject they're supposed to know.
Well, this video ended up way more negative than I wanted it to - can anyone recommend me some GOOD Arcane theory videos I might be able to have fun with?

The ironic thing about giving Jayce all of the credit for hextech and not mentioning Viktor in the intro. That's actually lore accurate
the Man of Progress keeps getting away with it!
Shit like this is why Viktor started a cult
This isn't Jayce's doing, this is the inherent classism of PIltover, they just don't even see Victor, he is invisible, for if they SEE him and his accomplishments, it makes them the bad guy.
Just because Victor assisted with perfecting Jayce's research, that is still far from being the originator of it or even an equal contributor. Remember, Jayce had this dream since a very young age. He literally did years upon years of research before Victor was ever a part of it. People are not wrong in attributing Jayce as the primary visionary behind the invention of Hextech.
Also, Jayce wanted Viktor to go with him to the hextech presentation on season 1, Viktor refused.
@@void-creaturedamn I never even noticed that. Even without fake legs they totally couldve made him braces that move his legs.
@@void-creature Best bit about the prosthetics, once Viktor goes back and opens his lab in Zaun they become better than they already are. From chunky, bulky things to much closer to "human sized, but metal" with fine control.

Can't blame the general populace for mixing that up considering it's hard to tell the difference from the consumer side.
But they should know a bit better

It’s tragic but also one of my favourite parts about Viktor. He isn’t jealous of the spotlight or the fame, and his falling out with Jayce is over ideology and principles rather than being scorned or forgotten
@@purpleberry3564Yeah, I got pretty annoyed when the council made Jayce a councilor in season 1 while simultaneously not even acknowledging Viktor's existence even though he's right there in the room with them.
Glad it "failed" by their standards
My biggest gripe are in fact not the inaccuracies, but that this video is just a summary of what happened with the Riot Narrative across the years, with nothing else added, so it's not a theory or anything that ressembles one
Absolutely
I think this is actually good in the broad sense. Not all of Arcane audiences are lore addicts that want to watch a 4 hour Tbskyen video about the cloak that Ambessa wears. (I do, but not everyone does.)
I understand that, but it's a growing gripe of mine with the theorist channels, that they sometimes just rehash info other people already told @@rayeiswriting4372
@@rayeiswriting4372 not necessarily lore addicts but they are called "the film theorists" and they delivered a partly correct summary
Honestly that's been my issue with their videos recently. If it's not a fandom they're deep in, they basically just do a summary.

Yeah I mostly just watch Style theory these days, and even then not consistently because their topics don't always interest me.

But this video wasn't for me (on the film theory channel). And yes I was disappointed because of that line
The thing about the theory channels is when they miss the mark on something they REALLY miss the mark (ace attorney videos flashbacks)
I feel that the Theorists miss the mark when they do these narrative focused videos since they always want to force a twist so they will ignore official material for the sake of that twist, but most of the time the twist they make up is the most groan worthy thing ever
Their Hollow Knight theory might be the most hillarious example
Their For Honor video causes me physical pain to watch. Just about everything in it is blatantly incorrect, and just a twenty second scan of a wikipedia article would have shown that.
@@ballendorf I have never that one, would you mind sharing what is so bad about it?

They were never good at it!
This is apparently just how game/film theory works now. They recently put out a video on the Book of Bill where apparently NOBODY had read the whole book, they separated it into chunks between the crew, and they hadn’t cross referenced anything with each other.
I didn't want to watch this, I knew it had a lot of things wrong and now I can hear someone who knows what they are talking about to watch it with me
I’ve also noticed with film theory’s new video on the book of Bill. They failed to acknowledge the queer subtext between Ford and Bill. Additionally, they had failed previously in crediting a Reddit for one of their theories as of late. I don’t know what happened with film theory, but something needs to change.
Ya, tbh this is something I've noticed with film/game theory for awhile and it's why I stopped watching years ago.
I think they need to change their upload schedules to once every 1 1/2 - 2 weeks to give themselves more time to research. I understand that might screw some things over with the algorithm but you know, quality over quantity.
Acknowledging subtext you believe to be queer coded isn’t an issue of quality or research that’s just a subjective nitpick
Failing to credit one Reddit post is also just a minor slip up. How do either of those things mean that something about film theory needs to change ?
@@MegaMighty
While these are minor points in the grand scheme of things, my point still stands in that they need to be a bit more thorough when it comes to research.
I think that the central mistake they made in building this whole theory up was assuming that decisions made while thinking about PR or profit are somehow 1:1 to the impact those decisions have narratively. In essence, they saw what Riot has been doing as a company and tried to make it metatextual to the actual LoL lore.
I see Matpat's legacy of bad research, clickbait, and wild sensationalization is still alive and well(?) at ___-Theory
We gotta keep in mind the target demographic. My 13 y/o nephew and all his little buddies are huge fans of that channel, and have been for years. I wish I could say it's harmless, but when that kind of "research" is taken as bible...it can get kinda ugly. Fun, but ugly.
@@SPAMusubiHalau you can make genuinely entertaining videos with factual information for kids, no reason they can't be both fun and accurate 🤷 it's a shame they don't seem to care about the latter
@@SPAMusubiHalaucontent for children should be more well informed. Children don't have the same capacity for critical thought and questioning what they're told as people with fully developed brains.
They just wanted to push something out to catch the algorithmic wave of season 2, and it shows
I'm glad to see that even without MatPat, the Theory channels still post theories that are completely out of touch with the lore they interact with. But at least when he said Sans was Ness, there was actually some point to that massive stretch.
Basically the UNIVERSE that acts as a BACKDROP to League of Legends ends up providing *general worldbuilding material* for Arcane to alchemize into a narrative.
its strange how they seem like sympathetic to riot. in their words and also animation. generally "game theory" videos seem very corporate nowadays.
That film theory video was so dumb 😂 I felt like I was being gaslit and everything just felt like a toddler trying to convince you that something is right when they actually have no idea what they’re talking about 💀
6:20 BRAZIL MENTIONED LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Tbskyen is such a great critic.
Yup!
Maybe I'm just stretching it but I swear at the start of the video when they describe some of the skin lines it sounds sooooooo AI scripted, maybe that's why they implied cats vs dogs is relevant and stuff but idk that's just a Theory
22:34 there is a line that Hiemerdinger says that Piltover was founded as an escape during Jayce's trial.
That’s Arcane canon, though. It doesn’t necessarily align with OG canon
tb skyen: the politest critic xD
idk. If Skyen sees Geoff Keighley its on sight mark my words
He is fairly polite compared to other reactores and critics.
Theorists wrote that Arcane video like JKRowling wrote the Harry Potter books; never, ever consulting someone who actually knows about a given topic.
Yup!
We have the recipts!!
To me, what happened in Riot and their potential projects goes something like this.
"Killing Art for the sake of Profit"
watch bridging the rift you will know why arcane almost got thrown and they even have to let go Fortiche talents at the beginning also that phrase applies more to concord than riot for riot its more like squize as much milk as you can from the players
@@rnielvhinsieans.elpidama6935 They didn't let go the talents, that's where the KDA and worlds video spawned from, the need for projects to keep the talent in until Arcane was properly greenlit once they got their footing.
Get the silver bullets and barricade the houses folks! Arcane S2 has turned Skyen feral
6:16 BRAZIL MENTIONED!!!! Número um do mundo!!!!
9:20 In fact, even in Bridging the Rift they mention that what they wanted most was to cancel the project, because they saw it as something too risky.
16:42 If I'm not mistaken, Christian Linke himself gave the figure of 6 years.
Me knowing misinformation has been the Theorists channels go to for years.
Almost everything in the video reads like it was taken from an AI generated script. Its probably why they threw in a "void event in 2022"
An AI would take speculation and accept that it DID happen.
Just remember, it’s not a theory it’s misinformation! Thanks for watching! 😎
Easiest way to defeat Aurelion Sol is tell him "wow, you're *obsessed* with those mortal Runeterrans, huh" and he'd immediately deny the fact out of pride, and ignore Runeterra forever /hj
He's such an ass, I love him
In fairness to the "removing one element without replacing it" point, I think Arcane season 2 is where we're going to be getting answers on what the new origin for Hextech is hence why they haven't said anything about in order to not spoil the reveal in the show.
In the end, narrative could lead to alternative cleaner powersources, rectifying the brackern situation, and a better society, albeit not as seemingly technologically advanced, one that develops more slowly but mindfully
It could be beautiful just as much as it could be tragic in case Skarner dies and actually everyone is not listening, and there is an end of the world.
50:50 "weren't comfortable having an actual structural critique of colonialism"
Ah, just like how they clearly weren't very comfortable with a serious critique about classism and worker uprisings so Arcane abruptly dropped that whole plotline to rush EVERYTHING to where Noxus is the real bad guys and Zaun has to assist Piltover to defeat them as a "greater threat" to unite them instead of an actual, fundamental, societal change.
Anyone remember film theory about rogue one where matpat joked that the film could just kill of its characters
That aged well
BRAZIL MENTIONED
Yo, Brazil mentioned! XD
You are delightful too man! Keep up the great content!
bruh! this was so bad... glad someone is talking about it, cuz film theorists needs to either take it down cuz misinformation or make an updated video about it.
nothing coming out of that set of channels has been worthwhile for many years now. it's all engagement baiting bad takes stretched out to whatever video length the algorithm prefers at that point in time
Babe, wake up, 1h long 3BSkyen video just dropped
Let's gooo!!
YAY BRAZIL MENTIONED
Also, as a Brazilian, I wouldn't get bothered to be used as engagement bait. I just love to see the rest of the world remembers we exist, even if it is "the engagement guys on social media"
8:20 wow, that pain was somehow both silent and audible
This kinda pisses me off because when matpat used to review theories on GTLive, they would pick apart anything that presented speculation as fact and this is the same thing they've don't here. I don't blame the theorist team specifically, I have a feeling this is the new company that owns the theorists channels, they probably wanted to capitalise on Arcane's release and didn't give them enough time to research. As much as the presenters annoyed me i this video you have to remember they are just employees to a wider company now
I left my personal take on Bluesky of what I think of this video but I stand the best part of the video is the last phrase "Arcane may be the best thing that happened to the League IP as a frahchise, and the WORST thing that happened to it's universe" the way this video (and everyone else) brushed off all the ways Riot has shown us how little they actually care about the lore of the IP, Narrative was seen as disposable before, it is seen now with Arcane and unless some of the upper execs heads roll off, so will be the next 15 years
Oh my god its the "Hollow Knight PC is the Pale King" theory all over again…
What even was the theory at the center of the video...? 😅 I grew up watching MatPat and when it came to his more insane videos, he still married himself to the source material. That way he could have all the knowledge to be theatrical and crafty with. This is just, like...an essay a kid would've made in middle school trying to meet the word quota.
9:40 if you watched the bridging the rift they said it themselves that it got put on hold because rioters told them that it sucked so they hired showrunners to guide them and made it again but less shitty as Christian said
"If I watched it" lol
that filmtheory video gives a vibe of like a lobotomy patient explaining league but they confuse whats real with what they read on reddit
Maybe not from reddit, but the research on this vid feels super shallow and rushed out.
Definitely reddit brain
Man out of all the theories they had to fumble, it has to be about LoL xd
I think the main problem of this and other similar videos is a dramatisation. If you have a theory, it should be big, it should be grand, it should be important. And their conclusion about “Arcane is so popular, so the Void is now eating other LoL universes because they are unpopular” is a symptom of that. It can’t be “Well, Arcane is now canon, so the main continuity is having some problems regarding the lore of some characters”, no, too small. These videos require some sort of existential threat and nothing less.
Love it when game theory say they're bringing in an expert on the subject, but then they don't understand half of the subject they're supposed to know.
It's so alien to see anyone but Matpat in a Theory video
This theory will leave you saying „wait… thats it? Thats the video?“
