How to Aim & Adjust Your Headlights
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 авг 2016
- In this video, I aim the headlights on the golf with my little brother. There is an adjustment screw on the backside of the housing that allows us to raise or lower the beam from the low beams. I’ve seen headlights that also have adjustment from left to right, however that usually doesn’t need to be tinkered with.
The PROPER way to do it, is to get the aim measured using a machine, and then align the beam from there. The machines can cost thousands of dollars, so doing it this way, you might have to align the headlights a few times to get it spot on.
From 10 meters away from a wall, the top part of the beam should be 20cm's down from the height of the headlights. To be exact, 20.9 cm's, based off a 1.2 degree negative slope.

Well done and well noted for your education, much appreciated
I followed your video with great results thanks.
as always great job. you are a smart dude to be so young you know your stuff. I think you are a mechanic or been to some kind of school. either way keep helping people like us.
Great video thanks!
This was the best video I've found so far that shows how to do this! Most other videos are vague or don't even show what you adjust behind the light.
super helpful thanks man
Point headlights at a wall 25’ away. That’s 300”. 1.2% of 300” is 3.6”. The top of the light beam on the wall needs to be 3.6” below the height of the low beam bulb on the car. I think the video could have been perfect if you mentioned a way to effectively measure the angle of the headlights but at least you’re on the right track. Cheers
excellent! great video!
Tnx man, great video
Thank you! I've got a driver's side main beam that is crazy high and feel guilty every time I heard out after dark. I'll fix it tomorrow!
very good video thanks.
Great video
Good video 👍
Brilliant and clear demo, 👏 bravo!
Spot on!!
I had to get my entire front of my VW replaced after an accident, and those morons couldn’t align my headlights after going there 2 times. There is a huge difference. Thank you for the help, now I can do it myself and get t right.
Exactly what I needed to know...
Just installed new headlights for my 2015 corolla
Saw the uneven light pattern
watched this video
now I know how to fix it...
@@taekwoncrawfish9418 Really? Well, I have the lights leveled out and I like it like that....much better than the uneven pattern.
@@taekwoncrawfish9418 You're right, but I don't have mine angled up high like that. In some states you can get a ticket for having them that way.
I have mine set even and aimed at a low angle.
And as far as blinding people, have you ever had a truck with a lift kit pass you by? Unless you're in a truck, their lights are level with your head.
Kind of annoying, ain't it?
Thank you for your nice details video
Thanks man :)
Hey man I have just installed HID on my Mazda 3 but don't know the high your using to make it like you did in this Vid can you please advice me on it.

Can all car move side to side or just some car? Mine can move up or down by can’t do side to side. Or maybe I haven’t found the screw to turn yet
I noticed there was no adjustments made for lateral (sideways) light placement. Most headlight have both to adjust.

Where can I buy those led bulbs? I have those headlights but I need the leds
I have the same lights but on a jetta, how do I adjust left to right the instructions kinda suck
Thanks for the video. What's H ID kit and bulbs are those? The light output is amazing. I have OEM HIDs and am looking for replacement bulbs to improve brightness.
oem tends to be halogens but depending on the car I guess it could be hid, if it's not very bright I would guess halogens, leds r super bright up close but not far away and hid is just crazy good lol
like your shirt Milan.. how can I get that?

Where are the aiming screws on a '96 Chevy Van?
Small point, but 1:08 1.2% isn't the same as 1.2 degrees.
Also 2:25 the upper line of the left lamp should line up with the upper line of the right lamp;
You shouldn't have two steps in the complete output as this means one lamp isn't dipped 1.2%
when the video gonna be up today Milan?
Hi do anyone know how to do a polo vivo 2014 please
How can I get my lights to be like that?
You said that we need to have (example on the golf) 1,2 degrees down. How did you measure that? Or how can I do that at home? Thanks!
Here, have a link... Dont have to follow it exactly, but its an easy standard way of doing it.

Make a video on your Honda accord headlight adjustment
Agreed !
The stock light of golf 4 are more powerfull that you ebay light with hid.. great video this help me.
That is so not true.. The lumens from a 55 watt HID kit will always surpass the light output of any halogen bulb
+milanmastracci befor i install xenon in my golf 4 i have a basic headlight the arent good. but a frend tell me for xenon r32 style 35w but thye are shitt i can see anything but i enjoy te video thnxx...
Well maybe your friend is wrong.
let's say you bought a car from someone and they fucked up both headlight aiming. how do you know how high or low it's supposed to be? what if the Driver side is high but thinks it's the right height?
lol he asked how do you aim them not which kit do i buy......also that kit you linked is shit
to answer the question, at 25ft both beams should be no higher than a passenger car's side mirror so about 32-36 inches
parallel setting?

I have 2009 Mercedes c300 how can adjust the headlights were can I find the screw to move move right to felt? one of my projector light is like this (/) (-) how can I fix it 😢
adjusting headlights only on a 2003 hyundai elantra
the accord driver side light is impossible to get to
Wow those projectors are crap, horrible beam pattern.
And you adjusted them wrong, they should be level with each other. Now your passenger side light is aimed higher.
Jonathan A sekopiski is right. The beam pattern is really crap and he adjusted the right headlight a bit higher than the left. As you see, the lights have a "cut-off" which makes the right side of the beam pattern higher than the left side. So, the left side of the right headlight's beam pattern should be perfectly aligned with the left side of the left headlight's beam pattern. That way oncoming traffic won't be blinded by the right headlight. But he adjusted the right headlight so it's level with the high side of the beam pattern of the left headlight. That small difference is sometimes enough to blind someone, given that HIDs have about 3000lumen.
Jonathan A yall are alllll wrong! The correct way to aim headlights is the driver side light is to be 2 inches lower than the passenger. Dont believe it, look it up.
@@JM-yx1lm yes exactly
How far are you supposed to be from the wall when adjusting??
The further you are, the more accurate will be.
I love this .... it's illegal in the country I'm from, if you don't have your headlights adjusted right. I had some close calls because it seems that no one in the US seems to give a sh*** if you blind someone.
I just changed my headlights and noticed they are way to high .... since it's dark I go and get right on it.
My MK 5 GLI is 1.0* positive
The tops of both beams should be equal and the low point of both beams should be equal. Essentially giving you one step up and not two. He needs to go down a few more turns.
4:14 call me crazy but, that light throw is really short... you can barely see what's in front of you... Almost like a driving with fog lights only...😥
driver's side should always be slightly lower due to blinding oncoming drivers .
Can I do that in the stock lights?
You need projector lenses. Stocks on certain cars are Halogens
you should be able to readjust on OEM headlights
How do you know its 1.2 percent angle?
I guess he does not know. But it is simple. On the headlight you can find the percentage, sth between 1-2%, f.e my golf IV has 1.2% and 1%, it is the right angle. so you can calculate it, just drow a triangle and you can calculate where should the line be, f.e if you are 5 m from a wall, your headlights are 0.9m high, with 1% you should see your line +- 0.83m (I just figured out the numbers, but I think you got this)
If only all drivers considered this
2.sl0w nation!
Light on the right side (passenger side) should be higher to illuminate road signs and lower on the driver's side to prevent blinding other drivers. Shouldn't be even.
Nice shirt
You didn't start with a initial height measurement to work from.
Odd, there’s no aim adjust for my cat. They just insert and rotate to lock on.
This video does not describe the proper way to aim your headlamps. Where did you get your information? There is a standard for this, it's SAE J599. Find the lamp centers (marked on the headlamp lens), and transfer those to a wall 25 feet away. Aim the hot spot of each lamp to just below and to the right of each cross hair (there's more details in the standard, but this is the brief important stuff). Search for images of this standard if you need a visual. Now 107,000 viewers have the wrong information. Please revise your video. Don't want to hate, but if you use the word "proper" then people think that you've researched the topic and have found the correct information. Better to say "This is how I adjusted my headlamps", this way you don't agitate people that have designed forward lighting systems.
Mark Dixon is 100% correct, but just to add a little more info...the vehicle must be on a level surface and parked back from the wall, or door you intend to use as the aiming spot...I thought the distance is supposed to be 30 feet, but 25 will work just as well. Make sure the car is parked 90 degrees to the wall or the lit area will be distorted.
I'm not too sure if the VWs in the USA have the remote controlled (electric) headlight levelling system like we do in Europe, but assuming that you do, it's important to note the following....
before undertaking the exercise depicted in the video, it is important that the car be empty...no heavy stuff in the boot, fuel tank no more than half full and no one sitting inside. Set the levelling switch at its highest point and go on from there. All that means is that later on when you do have rear seat passengers or a heavy load which causes the rear end to drop and the lights to shine higher, you can just roll the adjuster downwards and light the road ahead safely. Most cars I've owned have a section in the owners handbook which describe the procedure for adjust...relevant to that particular vehicle.
Hope all this makes sense and helps someone.
Having written all the above...the adjustment system he shows in this video is nothing like the system on mine, so I'm off to search some more.
Correct, but just to elaborate, "Hot Spot" referes to early 'seled-beam' headlights that don't have a clean horizontal cut-off to the beam. The standard has been updated for later lamps:
Sealed Beam: O O
Reflector: ___/ ___/
Projector: ___/---- ___/----
The 1% and 1.2% is correct according to the ECE specification. SAE is to be followed by you guys in America. So the video not wrong, but it’s not for a us audience. I’m surprised you don’t know this, as you call yourself someone who designs headlights for a living. Seems pretty dim(wit) of you to me, mr. designer of forward lighting systems.
Someone should tell Acura and Lexus to properly aim their LED JEWEL light design so it doesn't blind other drivers
All Lexus cars come with an bubble levels on the headlights, auto leveling, or adaptive lighting so I know you're lying 😂😂😂
If there was oncoming traffic, you wouldn't be blinding them because you just cant see damn nothing!
right headlight is always a little bit higher! it's on the other side of the incomming traffic!
learn more before "adjusting" :)
p.s. check all the cars from the factory lol
good luck
thank you, I hate driving at night, but,,,,,,,, its hot,,,, as ( hell) here in Pensacola florida , so I work nights, and job is driving,,i say paint the right hand lane in America white, and the left lane baby blue,,so they are more visible ,,exit ramps silver,,,,and maybe people who cant see ,, take their licence away..
