Maaco quote 1600 for my 91 formula. Went to the best body shop in DC and quote was 8-10k and 3-4 months to complete. Maaco here i come. My first maaco paint job lasted 8 years. Not perfect but worth it
I don’t know what it’s like in America but in Australia a $2000 dollar paint job is what you would pay your unqualified mate to do it in his back shed a good paint job at a panel shop would be 6-10 grand
In Australia, more like $AU5,000 for a backyard job, $AU10,000 for a qualified backyard job, and $15,000 or more for a proper paint booth job. Min was done really well for what I wanted in a paint booth. looks amazing...
same here in US. if you pay for an economy pain job you will get economy paint job. no one in their right mind would take a car to maaco and expect anything better than a backyard paint job for what the charge. basically you get what you pay for.
Youre correct, i was quoted 2500 in just Materials to paint my 1931 model A. From a reputable shop.... he paid less then that, his paint gonna fly off from a pressure washing
You crazy af. All y’all. I can get candy whatever color for 3 grand from Cali candy. Who the fuck you paying 10 grand?? Y’all clearly are getting robbed.
@@thebakery3996 my car needs a paint job bad. Let me know the cheapest he would charge for my ride. A 1988 Chevy Camaro with Plasti dip coated all over it. It needs the Plasti dip removed and a good paint job of maybe like a metallic aqua blue, or jet black with two coats of clear...
I paint cars for a living, and to be honest I wouldn’t even sand down your car, if you only had a 2k$ budget. Be happy with what you got. Cause 2k labor and materials included for an entire car is an insult to anyone that does paint/body work... and you wanted them to cut and buff it for those same 2k. Bro be serious with yourself. You aren’t going to buy a Vincent van Gogh painting for the budget of a 5$ poster.
Nah, when they tell you they are going to do something they should do it, that's just good customer service plus you expect a "professional" paint shop to do the basics like a mask stuff off properly and not just shoot paint all over your engine, wiring and to not tear shit up to tape behind.....
yeah but even you did a 2k paint job your still not doing that shitty of a job. As a painter myself masking and tapping is literaly DAY ONE paint and body class stuff. I mean atleast run to wal-martand get a roll of cheap masking tape and spend 75 cents for a damn newspaper so you don't get overspray everywhere. I understand it's a "cheap paint job" but you still expect a certain level of professionalism even from Maaco and you certainly don't expect them to tear shit up.
$2000, for a full paint job, should have been the red flag you needed. As someone who paints cars for a living....I can tell you a full paint job STARTS around $5-$6000. Also... you can get the overspray off the headlights with a razor blade, easily and completely. As for the wheels take them off and use thinner on a rag. Lastly... for $2000 you got a steal lol. Tha paint (base and clear) ALONE would cost $500+ MINIMUM. Doesnt include all the tape, paper, sandpaper and hours of prep.... You got what you paid for completely and fairly.
The paint job you want is $7-12k. Had you taped off some stuff yourself, and removed what you could, it would be much better. I think it looks great and most of your complaints are easily fixed.
I had Maaco spray my car back in 2017, and even though I’m really pleased with it, I still think they suck. They managed to screw stuff up even though I prepped the car and basically handed it to them on a silver platter. That location also went under not too long after. I’m planning on longterm update video soon.
It looks good for 2k imo🤷. I mean have you seen what shops charge to, not only paint your car but change the color? I've literally seen 5k paint jobs look worse. What you have described all looks easily corrected. To be honest 7-10k is what it takes to do a paint job correctly imo. I think you got a decent deal. Just correct those minor issues and be happy you saved a bunch of money 💲
I hate to admit this, but I painted for Maaco 15 years ago. The 17 yr old kids prepping and masking get 1 hour to do their job. Maacos goal is 8 cars a day. You get what you pay for. Materials alone would cost you over $1000 if you were to do this at home. Try taking it to a regular body shop, they probably wouldn't touch it for under $5k.
I love the way these guys think a 2000.00 paint job is going to be top of the line. As a retired body man and painter I can assure you it has been at least 20 years since you could get anything near a professional job for 2000.00. Sadly you get what you pay for. Never trust a classic car to be "RESTORED" by Maaco.
Orange peel happens with the best shops. That's why you see them wet sand and polish (paint correction). As for the other issues, this is where the additional costs from other shops come into play. Maaco just doesn't offer these services. You get what you pay for.
For $2,000 this guy got a good job, you really think they have hours to remove lights, latches. Accessories and the wheel wells? Some people have no idea what paint and body work cost.
I learned the hard way to Never use Maaco on a car you care about. I had them paint a Trans-Am and there was overspray everywhere. They even painted over the door handles and key holes and it started peeling within a month.
Macco isn't for a car you care about. That honestly is what you would expect for $2k. To paint the camaro correctly the bumper covers, fender liners, rear hatch, door handle, mirrors, sweeps, weather stripping needs to come off the car. The spoiler needs to come off. To paint the underside of the hood it needs to come off. As you said the window sweeps took you 5 hours. So that is $500 in labor. Etc. The over spray can be corrected. The real issue is without disassembling the car you have sharp paint edges that will eventually peal. To get a good $2-3k paint job anywhere you need to disassemble the car for them, that is do the other $6k in labor yourself. Also most people at Macco are use to newer snap together cars and don't know how to work on old cars. I had my 89 firebird painted by Macco in 1999-2000. I had to go through all the over spray correction and wet sand and buff but in the end I couldn't complain what I got for $700. It has held up decent but I'm getting chips around the paint edges, but then again it's a 20 year old paint job. They did over sell it though.
I have been painting cars since I was 15 years old. I am 50 now okay when you get the top-of-the-line paint job from Maaco they are using more expensive materials if I were to paint your car I would have 1500 to $2,000 in material Mako gets a huge volume discount but it's still a decent amount of money in materials if you would have taken the car to them with the pieces that they painted removed you would have decent paint job there is not enough labor dollars in their price for them to completely disassemble your car properly and paint it and that's where the problem lies the paint job looks pretty good it could use a wet sand and wheel and it'll look a lot better but I mean you get what you pay for........ sorry
i bein paintin almost as long and adgree why i dont paint completes much anymore everyone thinks 2k is outrages to paint a car n want to pay like 1 to 1.5k but like said u can have that n materials fast or at least half that even if unused cheap stuff and then theres time to do it right it can takes months so i m supposed to make ur car precfect spend months n only make 500 or less for all that work even if i get it done n a week rushing it as macco did thats 500 for a week of work when i could paint a bumper n a day or so n make the same plus you know a good shop from a bad cuz a good shop will not want u to prep the car at all n if u bring it n bondo n primed up prob goin cost more cuz they will have to redo ur work people just expect to much much buy a compressor paint gun da sander primer gun clear gun sandpaper primer maskin tape paint clear scuff pads paint booth n do it ya self then come back tell me u will paint a car for 1 or 2k lol
I grew up in a bodyshop since birth, and ol pop is old now, but his name alone is worth one 20-30k project per year...... ( minimum) however he's had 4 different kinds of cancer( still living) but I don't have any desire anymore
I've painting my Camaro on my own for a few weeks now. I'm nearly done. I'm going to a different shade of white. You've inspired me to get a 3rd gen and build it up. This set back won't stop you, next thing you know it you'll be the badest kick ass 3rd gen owner around
It’s not an overreaction at all. They promised you a service and underdelivered. The part when you lifted the spoiler just hurt 😔. They definitely need to make it right.
Thank you so very much for posting this video. For what it’s worth, I had an estimate from a local MAACO to paint my 89 Formula 350 (~$2300) and, based on your experience, I will be sure to go elsewhere. I’d also like to say thanks in general for posting some very helpful Third Gen content. Personally I’ve found it very encouraging and now tackle jobs I would have previously sent to a mechanic. Cheers!
Paid 15k for my paint job on 3rd gen, came out perfect 👌. Just fix what u can and make due with what u got. I doubt they gonna redo it for u if that company already has a bad rep they don’t care if another one gets added to the list.
I own a restoration/custom car shop in Denver. To give you a good idea, the cheapest I have ever painted a classic car, which had a great body and no rust was 9k. Most end up between 10k-14k with some of the nicest "show car" finishes ending up in the 30k range. Quality paint and materials alone cost me me over 2k. Unless you're really on a budget, avoid macco at all cost.
You can’t get a better product for however much money you spend at Maaco. It’s like spending $2000 at McDonalds expecting a sirloin steak and they still give you a hamburger.
That's more like still frozen patty.... Yes its a "cheap paint job" but you should still expect a certain level of compentence and proper mask and tape job and not get overspray everywhere, that's literally DAY ONE auto body class stuff.
Have taken a few cars to Maaco for full body paint. The best thing to do is bring them the car as stripped of trim as possible. That includes removing the tail lights and sticking them into the truck area once you arrive at the shop. It is also a good idea to mask as much as possible, that you do not want overspray paint on.
very unfortunate :/, but do you know where i can buy the camaro grill that you have? i been looking all over the internet, and i can find them. once again i feel sorry
Honestly, I've wanted to get my car painted for a long time... everywhere I look wants more than $6k and usually closer to (or over) $10k. I know having your expectations be letdown sucks, but, after you have the surface correction done and fix the few things that got oversprayed on or painted, you should still be well under the minimum estimate that I have come across over the last few years of searching. I've always been worried about Macco, but this actually makes it seem like a decently economical idea....
I have never heard of anyone having a positive experience with Maaco. You may pay more if you go to a local body shop...but it’s so worth it. I’d rather paint my car myself than go to Maaco. Also, how’d you pay? You could do a chargeback claiming that you did not receive goods and services as promised. At minimum, they should fully refund you.
I had a Maaco paint job done on my 3rd gen Camaro years ago (I was a broke college student). Watching this video brought back memories. I feel your pain. Only thing I did different was I took the spoiler off before I took it in. I had to do a lot of touch up painting on stuff they didn’t paint, and spent several hours polishing off the black overspray off of my stock white five star wheels. I don’t know how to paint cars, but I probably could have done a better job. Maybe. Lol.
You atleast couldn't have done worse..... I've been a body and paint guy for 30 years, my daughter screwed up and took a car to MAACO because she was in a hurry to get a paint job done and a month later he had paint flying off the car as she drove down the highway, they didn't even scuff it, they literally washed it force dried it with a leaf blower, half-ass taped it off and shot the paint. I ended up having to to sand it back down to bare manufatoring product (metal/plastic) because they put so much thinner in the paint to get it to stick that it ceeped into the original paint and started to lift it. That $1000 paint job she paid them for ended up costing them 10k because they decided to take it to court because they thought she was just some young girl not realizing her dad ran a custom paint shop and knew what they did.
I have to be honest, this sounds like a male Karen rant. You took the car to Maaco...they did a Maaco quality paint job and you felt the need to record your interactions with them, make videos, send them videos, post a RUclips video. Do you demand and complain to a manager every time you eat at a restaurant? I bet that you do.
The didn't mask the car off as promised. Very simple to understand if you watched the video. Do you leave nonsense comments on every video you watched 40 seconds of? I bet you do
Thanks for sharing your misfortune. You've saved a lot of people tons of the same heartache. Hope you get things back right soon and Maaco does the right thing too.
Take it from someone who’s worked in body shops since leaving school. That paint job is good for a $2000 full colour change respray. There’s alot that goes into painting a car it is very labour intensive and other body shops would have quoted you 3 times that amount. The trim on top of the door being broken should have been replaced by Maaco but other than that all other issues can be sorted out in an afternoon
I'd be super happy if I spent 2 grand and got these results. I can't imagine spending upwards of 7 thousand dollars at a quality body shop just to avoid overspray. I do appreciate the video. If i ever use them, I'll bring them my truck without trim, lights, and a different set of wheels.
You don’t have to. If you can live with overspray, don’t take any extra precautions. Keep in mind, most people that go to Maaco aren’t car enthusiasts. Most people could care less about small imperfections if it saves them 5 grand.
@@BearGrils55 Yes but they still expect SOME sort of competency for their money. This was also a 2k paint job not $399 special. a roll of masking tape is 59 cents at walmart and a newspaper is a less than a buck..... theres absolutely NO excuse for all that overspray much less breaking stuff, and that's not small imperfections, It's not saving 5k if you gotta take it somewhere else to have someone fix it because they didn't care enough to do a proper job to begin with.
Agree to disagree. At 2 grand, he got what he paid for. Labor, materials, rent, and utilities aren’t cheap. They pump these paint jobs as quick as possible. They cut corners to keep their cost down. I understand your argument, but 2 grand is very cheap for a color change. I’d be thrilled with these results.
@@BearGrils55 so he paid grand to have a paint shop tear up his window trim, not do a complete paint job and get overspray everywhere? I'll be sure to let your customers know.... even on a CHEAP job you still expect them to paint the entire car, not break shit and do a decent job at masking and taping and not paint bomb your entire engine bay.
Bro your Camero looks great! Manage your expectations, you're not going to get a $10k showroom quality paintjob from maaco. You have a new coat of paint and clear that will protect your car for another 30 years
nah, he'll be lucky to 5 out of it, with that orange peel in the clear coat he's probally going to have to have it sanded back to the base and a complete 3 coat clear coat sprayed back on because I guarantee you it it was 1 MAYBE 2 coat clear coat. Just because it's a cheap paint job doesn't mean it should a shit paint job. learning how to mask and tape correctly is literally day 1 body and paint class stuff, when I took auto body class at the local Vo-tech in high school the first month of year 1 was learning how to mask and tape, there's literally no excuse for that, that's just laziness and not caring.
I used to do restorations and the one thing I would always recommend to anyone who said they were sending a car to Maaco is if you don’t want paint on a part, don’t leave it on the car. Take the entire thing apart and trailer it there and back. They don’t pay enough labor time to their prep guys to take a car apart. They just give it a quick scuff with a da, maybe throw a little filler onto a couple dings, and throw some masking onto it as quick as possible. Your prep guy probably didn’t even make 100 bucks on your car.
The cost of good paint is at least $2000. That's no labor. I charge $5200 for just a basic respray (same color) $6500 for a color change (car only add another $300 for a truck). Tri-coat paints (Pearl white, Candy apple red) you are looking at a $10,000 to start off with. A complete restore will start at $20,000 (stripped to bare metal, minor body work done). If you want a good job from MAACOs or Earl Scheib, remove everything first. Do your own bodywork, prime & block sand your body work, prep & sand everything, bring them the parts removed from the car. Don't install your good rims & tires and new exhaust before bringing it to them. Trailer the vehicle there if you can so you won't have to remove the head & tail lights and bumpers. Go with the realization that they will be half ass masking the vehicle and they might sand it if they are feeling good that day. Don't expect a color match to any known code for your color, they use cheap paint and they only get it "close enough" to your color code. Never get the cheap enamel paint, always go with the urethane. Expect to buff the entire car to get a good shine because it will have orange peel. I personally would flatten out the clear and then spray another 3 coats of clear on it, then polish it. You will get what you pay for.
Why did you decide to go away from the stock paint? Are you going to eventually remove all the interior and engine compartment components and paint gray also?
alot of it will clean up with a rag, razor blade and some paint thinner, but that's not the point, he shouldn't HAVE to do it in the first place, they should have done a correct masking job in the first place. I understand "it's a cheap paint job" but come on man.... not taping all that up properly is just lazy and a shitty job.
yeah i got my wifes hyundai repainted for around 2000, little better maybe than yours but not by much. i learned my lesson, been saving for a year now to have my IROC painted, its gonna run about 10,000-12,000.
My two cents all cars come like that after they painted them. Usually they have a detailer clean the car before the customer picks the car. Just take it back to the detailer. Or do it your self.
87 Camaro 2.8 Multi-port Fl third GEN and I’m putting a LS 5.3 vortex motor in it and I was wondering what type of transmission should I pay with a turbo 350 4l60 e 2wd to Drive long distance with
If they shot that much paint inside that radiator and AC condenser I would most definitely take them out and make sure that the louvers in the radiator are not plugged up stopping air flow going through the radiator overheat your engine
Welcome to my world. It doesn't matter how much I paid, it would always look crappie. Even these guys that charge 8 to 10k for a paint job on a car worth 8500 then tell you that it just isn't worth painting. If you want it done right you will have to do it yourself. I'm in this boat too. I will have to get a building built then construct a booth inside to paint my car. When I am done I will have a new shop left over with all the money I will have spent for a paint job. But really, this has happened all my life. I'm 68 everyone is always trying to reach into my pocket and take whatever I have. And I don't have much. However I do end up with one thing and that is a lot of experience in a lot of different things. Be glad it was only 2k you lost. Now learn how to fix it and do it yourself.
If I were going to bring a car to Maico, I would do the prep work myself and just have them spray it. When I was a young man, I went for a job interview at Maico. They required you to mask off a car in 30 minutes. I had done body work before and needed the money but I couldn't mask a car anywhere near that fast. That's what you're getting.
I know that I'm late to the party, but yeah you are over reacting. Not to put them down but Maaco is the Jiffy Lube of the paint industry. They want to get cars in and out as quickly as possible. And believe it or not $2k is not a lot for a paint job.....LOL. Honestly for the type of detail that you were looking for in a paint job would have ran you closer to $5k to $7k. I've been in the process of getting Spawn (86 Berlinetta) ready for paint and $2k is about what I've spent in materials alone 😔 Check out the Underground Paint Kings channel
My car has a crap Maaco paint job, too, courtesy of the previous owner. No clear coat, so I can't wax it because the single stage paint comes off onto my buffing pad, and they did a piss-poor job scuffing and prepping edges and trim areas, where it's flaking and coming off. You might wonder why Maaco stays in business, but they rely on the crowd who basically think that it's "good enough" and care more about cost than quality. Fun fact: my dad was an insurance agent for 35 years, and they always told their claims to go anywhere BUT Maaco for repairs because of the poor quality of work they typically produced.
I jad a maaco paintjob, but we masked and removed headlights tail lights, trim, etc, anything we didn't want painted pretty much, and did the prep work ourselves, turned out great except one flaw, which they fixed hassle free.
I took my 1971 Cadillac hardtop to MACCO. This was about 11 years ago. It was an Arizona car and very clean, just weathered cracked paint. I removed bumpers, weather stripping, all stainless trim, all glass except the windshield. The grille and all lights were also removed. I sanded the paint with an orbital sander, epoxy primed, 2K sand-able primer and urethane sealer. I had Macco use single stage urethane, metallic taupe. The metallic is tricky to spray without tiger stripes. The finish was great, very pleased. I could not paint the car because it was too large for my limited space. No specks, blems, drips or sags. $ 695.00 on special. It would have cost me almost that for PPG paint. Very good job .
Not bad for a Macco job. Back in the day we used to remove everything, drive the car to Macco with lights held in by 2 bolts and old wheels / tires, remove the lights in the parking lot.. With Macco you are paying for the paint not the prep, thats up to you to do.
Body work is art. People get what they pay for. Especially!!!! With body work. But for $2000 u should atleast get a better job. It’s all in the details man.
I cant stand when people talk about they want to restore a car, take it to Maaco for a paint job then complain like they spent 10k. You're delusional. Post their info I want to take my 69 Impala there. Shes a daily beater
Their info is...Maaco. If you get on the tiny computer screen in your pocket, you can get on a search engine called google, type in Maaco into the search bar, and it will show you one near you. Also don't forget your fiber pills!!
@@beardedreviews Awwww poor baby, u maddy waddy? Bite me. Each Maaco will give you a different result. The one you used didn't do a bad job AT ALL. You're just a lousy customer, the typical douche who wants a whole lot for a whole little.
lol, bite me? You sound like you drive a ford f150 with a "No fear" sticker on the back window. You're not the one who has to spend countless hours undoing all of their overspray madness. Stick to Matlock and potpies, gramps
I’ve painted cars for 15 years. That is terrible work, but, if you think $2000 is a lot of money for a paint job I will inform you that a proper paint job will require at least $2000 in materials. Not including labor. That sucks dude. Good luck to you.
I’m working on my third gen too- I have found a good guy to paint it, BUT I AM DOING ALL THE BODYWORK AND STRIPPING EVERYTHING OFF I DON’T WANT PAINTED. All he is going to have to do is scuff it, wipe it down, seal, spray and cut and polish. It is even going in on crap wheels and tires. A good MAACO can even do a good job if you give it to them ready to paint.
I know I’m a year late on this but, maaco doesn’t really mask and they just shoot. The best thing to do with a place like that is pull out all the interior, trim, lights, pull off anything you don’t want to get paint on. Lastly put shitty tires on it. With cheap places you’re always gonna have overspray where you don’t want and they won’t cut and buff after it’s done. Hope they did something for ya.
Dude ..your electing too much the 2000.i think they did good... I am a shop owner. And if own 7 3rdgen camaros .. Decent I mean decent paint job varies from 3500 to 5500. Cheap cheap its 1800 to 2500 depending on how much work it needs
The masking and disassembly is where you save money. That and the lower quality materials. Take it apart beforehand and send it over on a flatbed. Seriously, glass, lights, trim, interior, the more you remove, the better the job. I was in body shop management for 10 years. You got what you paid for.
Man I feel bad that happened to you bro but I'm glad you made this video. I'm from the same city and I was going to take my 91 Chevrolet Camaro z28 there but I will not be going now. Hope you get your paint fixed.
I'd send it. this actually looks amazing for $2,000. I'd remove all the lights, trim, and plastics I don't want to be painted and replace them after painting. let it cure for a few weeks, spend a couple days wet sanding and polishing and it'll look like a great quality job. that, or spend $8,000-10,000 at a quality body shop.
I feel like anyone supporting this, has no idea the amount of work (including body work) that goes into painting a car CORRECTLY. Most of the complaints mentioned here are about things that the customer could’ve prevented with their own prep work. Do you want to have to do the work yourself? No, but you also are having a car painted with materials for $2,000, not $5,000. The LEAST you can do when going to Maaco is remove or separate the parts (weatherstripping, plastic parts, windows, trim, etc.) you don’t want painted and put some stock wheels on. If I were using them, i’d do all the prep work prior, bring it completely gutted just to spray, and only let them do a basic work. For custom/restoration work, expect the prices to reflect.
Im Torn, MAACO clearly made mistakes here. ripping up the door sweep, the orange peel....that spoiler. On the flip side you paid 2k for a full color change my man. What sort of miracle were you expecting? A proper color change from a reputable shop way out in the woods where i live starts at 6k with absolutely no body repair included. For 2,000 she wasnt going to be ready for the Concours d'Elegance. Im super bummed for you because it looks like your going to spend way more getting everything fixed. Super enjoying the videos, keep up the great work.
Yea fully agree with you. This is just my first time getting a car painted, so had no idea where to set the bar of expectations. I just know what I was told they would do and they flat out lied. That's what I'm most upset about.
@@beardedreviews They did you a little dirty to be sure. At the end of the day at least its a lesson and some content. Really digging these third gen camaro vids. Lots of builds happening on youtube with lambos and ferraris and whatnot but not a ton of cool obtainable cars are being done and these third gens are a solid platform to take way beyond how GM delivered them. Looking forward to more.
This why you do more prep before taking it in. Remove everything you can and do some masking yourself. For example, the mirrors, headlights. Taillights, reflectors, moldings, trims, spoilers or any body part that could be taken off etc should’ve all been removed before hand. You could even do some making before taking it in. It’s not that bad for what you paid.
FTR, that's $2k paint all day anywhere you go. What you're describing you wanted/expected is a $5k-$7k paint job at a $2k price. I feel you're pain, I recently paid $4k to paint my Camaro and it turned out waaaaaay worse than yours. Which is what led me to recently start my own RUclips channel (Project X) documenting the building my own paint booth set up at home to paint cars myself...A bit of advice on the oversprayed rims, always put a BS set of rims & tires on before the car goes to paint, that overspray is tough to avoid for any painter. A good shop would pull'em off and put the car on jack stands but hey that's Macco. Hope you get it sorted out, BTW beautiful car, she looks great on camera.
In the 1950's my Dad had his car painted by a company called Earl Shives for $ 29.95 the motto " We will paint any car any color for $ 29.95 " I remember over spray on tires, glass, and other areas.Back then the average incom was about $ 100 a week.
brings back memories of old. Back in the 60's I recall going with a pal to get his car at an Earl Shribe's shop in Providence, R.I. We walked into a half open door into the 'spray' area where a guy with a bandana wrapped around his nose and mouth was finishing up a spray job. In the opposite corner of the room was a foot high pile of beer cans filling the corner by at least 6 x 6 feet! In those days you knew 'runs' were acceptable for the &29.95 paint job and so was all kinds of over spray. My brother's wife had her husband' MG painted as a birthday present and they even painted over the mud on the running boards and rocker panels for no extra charge either!
I have been a painter for over thirty years.painting cars now is a losing proposition, materials alone in many cases cost more than the value of the car.Even the Buddy paint job is a thing of the past,I know this video is old,but be careful cutting and buffing, the paint looks kinda thin.We live and learn, but it’s still frustrating.
I don’t really know what you expected from maaco... I do collision/ paint for a living and $2000 is cheap for a complete paint job especially a color change. If I were to do that car it would be 10k minimum but it would be absolutely show quality perfect. The old saying goes... “cheap ain’t good, and good and cheap”.
Scub-So glad I watched this. I'm restoring my Honda Civic and this made me understand it's worth the extra $2k to take it to a custom shop! Sucks man. PS: I had that exact 1987 RS in high school! Happy to see you restoring one.
Good to see ya too man! I commented on one of your IG posts recently. And yea, one of my next couple projects will either be a civic or integra. My very first "cool car" was a 99 integra. I thought I was so fast lol
Maaco is a corparation. Contact the office that is in charge they will make them fix it... If they don't want to work with you due to disagreement you can go to another Maaco and have them fix the car and charge the other shop for the work... Any problems will be worked out...
I have an 84 z28 and was thinking of going this route. Glad you made a decision for me that I was going back and forth with. Also hate that this happened. Stay 3rd Gen bro💯
Bro you have every right to be pissed. Screw the “well it’s Maaco “ . So it’s your fault Bs. This is there profession. No different than a fence guy or a house painter. At some point it’s just a scam if what they say and advertise is not even close to what you pay for. Js roast there asses. They had no issue roasting yours.
The last car I brought to a body shop for a good paintjob my estimate was $8,500....I painted it myself and the materials alone cost $1100....time and labor was 60+ hours roughly and that was not a complete tear down, it was a straight car and I replaced just rubber parts, decals and emblems. It was an 87 IROC in Burgundy. :)
Yeah....I painted mine in my garage for under $1000 and I have custom pearl green flake over white basecoat and black basecoat on hood and trunk. .....I get all kinds of compliments, people are shocked when I tell them I did it in my garage and it was my first paint job with a actual spray gun and compressor and not just rattle cans. ......
Alot of research on RUclips , probably watched gunman videos for like 2 months before I pulled the trigger......it's the nova it the pic next to my name!!!
That is pretty bad. My buddy got a car done at Maaco years back and got a single stage paint and they also painted random stuff that didn't need paint similar to your under hood cover by the radiator. Parts that were oem black plastic they just sprayed right over. They also left the license plate backer on so it was the original color underneath. It came off with 2 screws and he specifically told them about it. He did remove head lights and tail lights to avoid those issues. He had a similar experience with the sales guy and even tossed him a $50 bill so that they'd take care of him and they still screwed up random stuff. I'm assuming that the sales people just say whatever you want to hear to get the commission and don't relay the information. He only got the $600 single stage package at the time which was the mid tier. I can't imagine how you got it worse paying for their better package. I doubt they will make it right. They never did for my friend.
Maaco quote 1600 for my 91 formula. Went to the best body shop in DC and quote was 8-10k and 3-4 months to complete. Maaco here i come. My first maaco paint job lasted 8 years. Not perfect but worth it
Yap this is true and honest opinion
8 years is good
Yeah. A real paint job would be 7-10k+++. I agree with you. More if panels have to be changed (floors, quarters, etc.)
Seems to me like you got a good value for your $2,000 the average professional paint job is 6000 +
I paint cars for a living, and to be honest I wouldn’t even sand down your car, if you only had a 2k$ budget.
How much is your work & quality
How do I find a good paint job place?
@@GodleyX you don't. Do it yourself. They are all stuck up like this dude above
I agree with this statement
you need 2k to.... rub a sander on a vehicle? 2k to do a days worth of work? lmaooo bozo
Bottom line: only use Maaco if you want a vehicle to look presentable. Don't expect greatness from the paint or body work...not for that price.
Good from far…far from good
You got what you paid for.. The paint job you expected is more like 10k plus -
Nah, when they tell you they are going to do something they should do it, that's just good customer service plus you expect a "professional" paint shop to do the basics like a mask stuff off properly and not just shoot paint all over your engine, wiring and to not tear shit up to tape behind.....
Hello! My mom is from Split and my dad from Stari Grad. I was there for 3 months 2 years ago.
Maaco is where you go when on a budget and not where you go when you are expecting a show quality job.
This is blown out of proportion the cost is so low it’s literally 5 times cheaper then other shops.
Maaco is basically the McDonald's of body shops and bodywork is basically artwork, so what you're getting is basically the McDonald's of artists.
More like the McDonald's Value Menu artist.
More like the Harbor Freight of body shops lol
Right 😂😂😂
You're being too generous. Going to Maaco is like buying a sandwich from a homeless guy on the street corner. 😜
im lost McDonalds is number one fast food for burgers lol are you saying that they are the best
You want a quality paint job but take it to Macao I own a restoration shop and I wouldn’t touch it for under 5,000 you get what you pay for ✌️
yeah but even you did a 2k paint job your still not doing that shitty of a job.
"i gotchu bro, i gotchu, yeah yeah dont worry i gotchu bro" wouldve been the moment i walked away, im sorry this happened to you though man
The paint job you want is $7-12k. Had you taped off some stuff yourself, and removed what you could, it would be much better. I think it looks great and most of your complaints are easily fixed.
Removing the interior is key
I had Maaco spray my car back in 2017, and even though I’m really pleased with it, I still think they suck. They managed to screw stuff up even though I prepped the car and basically handed it to them on a silver platter. That location also went under not too long after. I’m planning on longterm update video soon.
I saw this episode, your car does look sick.
Man I don’t know how I didn’t see your video and learn from your experience!!
I paid $3,000 per Nova and had them sent in back to back. $6,000 spent, and both cars came out messed up.
Its MAACO, what did you it expect, again it's MAACO
And that "some people" was the salesman that sold me the paint job.
MAACO is where you bring a 99 Ranger when the paint starts to fade. Expect a 20ft'r and hope for a 10ft'r.
I paint cars an materials don't cost much. The best clear is 200 to 300 for the set of clear and hardner
he only wanted them to tape it off like they said they would not disassemble it
@@captainflannel8558 why does it take you months to spray one car?
Dude, I’d be stoked to get that paint job for $2k. Easy to paint the wheel wells and the rest of the plastic.
At least it wasn’t a total loss but I feel like they definitely need to do something to make it right. Best of luck!
It cost 1200 dollars to fix a small dent and paint match the area!!!!!!!
Yea I learned the hard way
this is why maaco has such a lousy reputation
You can’t get a better product for however much money you spend at Maaco.
It’s like spending $2000 at McDonalds expecting a sirloin steak and they still give you a hamburger.
THATS NOT HAMBURGER
Omg dude.. that's MAACO for ya, this will add to the library of videos from bad MAACO paint jobs. Hopefully you get it all figured out .
Unfortunate bro. The green was alright 👌🏿. I would have kept it original ( retro vintage).
Silver is nice too.
Dude, sorry you had all that happen but didn’t you look it over before you left?? I would have never left with it until the issues where corrected.
I'd be super happy if I spent 2 grand and got these results. I can't imagine spending upwards of 7 thousand dollars at a quality body shop just to avoid overspray. I do appreciate the video. If i ever use them, I'll bring them my truck without trim, lights, and a different set of wheels.
all true but you SHOULDN'T have to do all that just to avoid it getting broke or painted or.
You took it to Macco. Y are you surprised?
Hey buddy I mite have the parts you need! PM me an I'll bring them over buddy!
People been telling me to take my IROC Z28 too maaco but I don't trust them 🧐
Me either after seeing this
I used to do restorations and the one thing I would always recommend to anyone who said they were sending a car to Maaco is if you don’t want paint on a part, don’t leave it on the car.
Are you going to eventually remove all the interior and engine compartment components and paint gray also?
he already replaced everything to black
You didn't get hurt brother ,,when life gives you lemons , make lemonade so bust out that 25 hundo and get to sanding
Seems about right for Maaco. They do good work if you do all the prep for them lol and sadly $2000 is cheap nowadays
He could kept that $2000 and paint it hiself
@@alfredbaxter1061 why didn't he? Sounds like his problem
Cheap people get cheap jobs.
Don't worry about the headlights man. You can use a razor blade and remove the over spray pretty easily
alot of it will clean up with a rag, razor blade and some paint thinner, but that's not the point, he shouldn't HAVE to do it in the first place, they should have done a correct masking job in the first place.
I bought me a 3rd gen camaro z28, I'm glad you're doing this series man!!
what do you mean new head lights? if you are talking about the blacked out area in-front of the lights ? it is flat black paint, DYI it.
H-O-L-Y S**T, that's freakin' atrociously HORRIBLE!!! That shop should be paying for the damages... ESPECIALLY those window sweeps.
yea the sweeps are what I'm dreading replacing :(
If I were going to bring a car to Maico, I would do the prep work myself and just have them spray it. When I was a young man, I went for a job interview at Maico. They required you to mask off a car in 30 minutes. I had done body work before and needed the money but I couldn't mask a car anywhere near that fast. That's what you're getting.
Bro, this hurt to watch. Sucks that you're having to deal with that
I know that I'm late to the party, but yeah you are over reacting.
Sucks you didn't get a job that you were happy with...Still a sweet car!
Are those aftermarket or OEM Iroc wheels? And what size?
Thx
They're aftermarket. They're 18s. I have a video about them on this channel
@@beardedreviews Nice!
Il check it out when i get home from work.
Cheers!
I want your problems. I want my 91 back!
I definitely wouldn’t complain if it’s only 2000 looks good that’s what maaco is for just looking good
In the 1950's my Dad had his car painted by a company called Earl Shives for $ 29.95 the motto " We will paint any car any color for $ 29.95 " I remember over spray on tires, glass, and other areas.Back then the average incom was about $ 100 a week.
brings back memories of old.
2 grand is nothing I n the modern paint world . People usually detail and put other new bolt ons after the paint job . Could have been alot worse !
For 2000 dollars you should get your money back not everywhere has good painters .
So you would take the car apart? Especially for a color change?
Maaco is definitely gonna spray your radiator and everything in the vicinity regardless of what package you get. Overspray is a part of every package😆
Lol I figured that one out the hard way :)
no extra charge lol
"I got ya bro" code for I am full o crap.
Man I can’t believe you thought Maaco was going to get your car done right. I feel bad for you
