      It's also the scene that makes the back half of the movie make sense. Like, why did Roger take off? Why did Mimi go missing? They dated for a little bit, broke up, fought at the funeral, but Mimi running away makes no sense without the addition that she knows she's pretty close to dying and she still loves Roger deeply. "Goodbye love, hello disease" shows more of Mimi's fears than any other line in the movie. Being with Roger made her less "the girl with AIDS" and more a person, separate from her disease.

      Also by that logic; they showed Collins holding a dead Angel. And Roger holding a dead Mimi. Two very intensely emotional scenes. Rent is literally an emotional roller coaster, that excuse they used for cutting this has always baffled me.

    Adam asking "But Who Mark are YOU" is sooo important to this musical. Mark is the story's narrator, the main character who doesn't have AIDS and presumably, the one who the audience can relate to the most. When Roger asks Mark "who are YOU to judge" and says "yes you live a lie" what is really happening is Jonathan Larson turning the lens on to the audience who have sat there the whole time enjoying these funny little bohemian junkies and HIV-positive kids from a distance. He's reminding all of us-we shouldn't judge, because we ALL have shit to deal with and maybe we're not living our life as authentically as we should. Maybe we should actually be a little bit more like Mimi or Angel, imperfect as they are.

    Who's bright idea was it to cut this emotional, crucial piece of character development out of the film?

    • @Nuyorican_Soul
      @Nuyorican_Soul 9 лет назад +129

      It was director Chris Columbus' decision. They should have never let him near this. He wanted to change his image by directing edgier material and when they gave him the opportunity to do it he got scared in the end and didn't trust the material, In his mission to soften the blow of the story's darker tone he wound up cutting this very important and crucial song in half. He's a wimp.

    • @stormangelus6638
      @stormangelus6638 7 лет назад +86

      Columbus is a fucking idiot to begin with, and didn't deserve the chance to make this amazing production into a movie. This scene was crucial to the movie because you see where Mimi's trying, once again, to reach out to Roger and Roger pushes her away because he doesn't have the strength to be there for her final moments. It's too much of a reminder of what he himself will soon enough be going through. Roger's been waiting to die and Mimi made him live again.

    • @brittanycoker5203
      @brittanycoker5203 6 лет назад +86

      It also explains the real reason Roger takes off. He picked Santa Fe probably when Angel was dying bc of the song Santa Fe, the fact that it was this illusion of perfection and freedom from their life. And he's leaving because he can't do what he just watched Collins do. And yeah, watch the movie enough times and you figure it out, but Mimi throws it up in his face in a way, with "you don't want to watch me die. I came to say goodbye, love..." Notice he just runs out, never echoes the line back to her. He can't tell her goodbye. But in Santa Fe, he still knows she's dying. He can't get away from the fact that she's still dying, she's just dying without him. So he comes home. And if you buy into the theory that Collins is also dying, Joanne and Maureen were happily living their life, Mimi had run away from rehab, and supposedly Roger was in Santa Fe, never to return, the reason Mark was on the roof at the end of "What You Own" to kill himself because basically everyone he loved was dead, dying, or otherwise gone, Roger's return saves Mark.

    I always cry when Mimi sings "You don't want to watch me die, I just came to say goodbye love." Because that's when it really hits you that she's dying, and that she's scared completely out of her mind because she's so young. But is also scared because she thinks that's the last time she will ever see Roger, and it's final. It's literally her last goodbye to the man she loves, or so she thought.

    • @Ember-Raine
      @Ember-Raine 8 лет назад +50

      +Emily Pyles And when Roger says "Poor baby" after I'm already crying when Mark says "Maybe it's because I'm the one of us to survive" it makes me cry even harder because in those two words and the tears in his eyes he's basically saying that he's scared too, because he's dying, and he's pissed because Mark is detaching from emotion even then.

    "Perhaps it's because I'm the one of us to survive." This line hits me, with Mark having to watch everyone he loves around him die. In ten years, they'll be all but forgotten and he'll still be there, the only one left to remember or carry on their legacy. That's a tough burden.
    One of my friends in high school always said Mark reminded her of me and I always took that to me because I was the one of the group to basically be the narrator for the rest, watching over their lives. We all went our separate ways after graduation. It just happened, the natural progression of life, but sometimes, I wish I could go back to that time when I had a core group of friends I could rely on.

    Mimi is a really tragic character when you sit and think about her. She's ill, an addict and broke on the street all by 19. She's essentially a teenager who left home and got tied up in a bad situation. Mimi fell in love with an older guy who didn't want to carry her impending death around. She's 19 and dying in this song. She's singing goodbye to any chance of love at 19. She's so young. And as someone who just celebrated her 19th birthday, I can't imagine going through anything like this. I know Mimi has a lot more depth to her, aside from her tragedies, but I have a new view of her now.

      It amazes me how often I forget that Mimi is 19 when she looks more love me she's in her late 20s. But then again, she did also say the line "But I'm old for my age."

    • @JustAPrayer
      @JustAPrayer 3 года назад +4

      Actually everyone is supposed to be younger then they look. The whole reason they're played by adults is because they used the original Broadway Cast. That's why the original actresses who played Mimi and Joanne turned down their parts, because the two looked older then everyone else at the time and thought they wouldn't be believable in their old roles. Honestly a lot of the flaws the characters in Rent have make more sense when you realize how young they all really are. Mimi's 19. Benny and Roger and Mark and Maureen are the same age, in their mid to late 20s, cause they all went to school together. Joanne and Collins are closer to 30 because she's a lawyer and he's a college professor (although it says in the musical that Collins was expelled from MIT and only got a teaching gig as a last resort so he might be younger). Angel I'm not sure, since her character's more of a mystery.

    Deleting this scene was the stupidest thing Columbus did. It would have made the movie from good to great. This scene, hands down, was his best-directed scene. It may be one of my favorite scenes in a movie-EVER. The acting was superb. Mark and Roger killed it in their fight. And Mimi and Roger? The angst in their eyes when they say goodbye. Even when Roger sees Benny and they share that look. Omg. Rent is so REAL. This scene is SO MANY FEELINGS. Larson was a freaking genius. May he rest in peace.

    Bummer that this was cut. It's the one thing I'd have kept in the movie. I feel like knowing that Benny paid for the funeral is important information.
    Not to mention Mark's "It's because I'm the one of us to survive" which just sums up his character and makes you REALLY feel for the guy in a way that never really comes up in the rest of the musical.
    I wasn't particularly fond of Mark before hearing that line; that's the sort of thing that just hits you over the head as you realize how unbelievably shit it would be the be the guy who has to bury every one of his friends and to know for a fact that one day, very soon, he'll be all alone.

      +Caitlyn Conboy I loved Mark, but finding this deleted scene made me weep for him even more so. Its easy to die. Once your gone, its over for you. No more pain, fear, or loneliness.... its the ones left behind... Its the ones who suffer after you're absence that must continue going on. Continue to remember.
      Not going to turn this into a "how I should know" reply. I just love your point. how you validated Mark's position in this story. He's a great friend. A good person. And in the end he'd be alone to grieve and remember, remember everyone who's gone- their stories- their losses and triumphs. I can only imagine the concept of losing everyone I hold dear. Its a sorrow I would avoid as long as possible.
      And his simple statement "It's because I'm the one of us to survive", painfully tells his hollow future "to look forward to". I feel great empathy and understanding for him.

    • @alicepan6631

      I agree with you, except for the part of how easy it is to die. Dying of AIDS is often a slow process, getting weaker over time and more pain comes without going. It has the fear of death, and when your friends have it as well, you can see them dying. Roger loves Mimi, but leaves because of fear. Mark isn't HIV positive and neither is his ex Maureen, and while he will be surviving behind them, it's not easier for Roger, who knows will survive Mimi and die after her.
      I feel for Mark, but understand Roger's "Poor baby" as well.

    • @stormangelus6638
      @stormangelus6638 7 лет назад +51

      When Roger is going after Mark, "Mark's in love with his work, Mark hides in his work..." it really reflects how there's a simmering undertone of resentment between Roger and Mark, because Mark's health isn't compromised. But there's the reverse, as well, because Mark has to protect himself even a little, because he's slowly but surely having to bury all of the people he loves, and Angel's death was the first nail. Roger criticizes him for hiding in his work but never gets it that Mark's movie-making is his way of trying to paint into permanency those he loves. They're all also still reeling from grief of Angel's death, and the emotions are raw. I feel horrible for Mark, as he's one of only 3 people in this film who aren't HIV positive, but he loves his community, his people. even more than his own family. Worse, Roger doesn't realize it until it's almost too late. Leaving this scene out of the movie was a BIG mistake.

    Most of the deleted scenes in Rent were removed because the director felt they were "too much"
    As everyone else agrees, it is a huge mistake! This one scene builds so much character for everyone! Mimi, Mark, Roger, Benny. It also explains a little more about what happened leading to Roger leaving for Santa Fe ("What You Own") This (and "Halloween") are the only two scenes that actually shows Mark's fear of being alone. Seeing Angel pass away and nearing Mimi's passing is totally scaring the crap out of Mark because he's realizing, he's "the one of us to survive"
    And this is personal, but "Goodbye, Love" is also my favorite musical number, especially with whoever played Mimi's voice. Her voice is just beautiful, yet you can feel the pain in her goodbyes!

You see what the characters are really thinking and feeling which explains why Mimi breaks up with Benny, why Rodger decided (stupidly) to leave, Benny's actual role in this whole thing, the other characters feeling towards Mark, and Mark and Rodgers relationship. Those were just the immediate things I could think of too. Not to mention how amazing this song is

    also just an observation - Adam Pascal's performance of the song in the original broadway recording was so much more aggressive and angry. His voice sounds thinner in the movie for some reason. Not worse (I love his voice), just different.

    • @hitsuguyathe1
      @hitsuguyathe1 9 лет назад +3

      I think hey wanted to give him a more "in pain" feeling than a "anger" feeling. You're right, I noticed it too, mostly in the "poor baby" line.
      Saying it softer, (to me, anyways) just made it seem like Roger was feeling more like he's almost regretting going.
      I kinda like the softer, les aggressive tone better :) what about you?

    • @annieoddo1475
      @annieoddo1475 9 лет назад +1

      I think everyone sounded a little bit different, and while it might have to do with them all being older, I feel like it was more that they were aiming for a different kind of sound. It is film, after all, and not Broadway, and the two are very different. Adam Pascal just showed one of the most dramatic and comparative changes. However I don't think his voice has actually diminished in quality or power at all, as opposed to Idina Menzel, who has done a lot of damage to her voice over the years from all her belting and hollering (and I love her, I really do!) He struck me as having really good vocal technique even in his early years. There are some tracks in the original that I thought he was better in, and some in the movie that I prefer. I'm just a huge fan of his and I think he's seriously under appreciated! I saw him in Memphis on Broadway a few years ago and I liked him more than the show itself (it was good, just not the most memorable show I've seen).

    • @hitsuguyathe1
      @hitsuguyathe1 9 лет назад

      Haha, yea you're right! I don't know many of the cast in this movie except Anthony Rapp and Idina Menzel (because I saw their new musical together, "If/Then") and I have noticed a change in both of their voices.
      I love Pascal's voice when he's singing softly, like in "Light my Candle," but I don't like that rock-star voice he uses in this number, or "What You Own" xD

    • @annieoddo1475
      @annieoddo1475 9 лет назад +1

      I was going to see If/Then because there were cheap tickets on TodayTix but they doubled in price before I had the chance to buy them :(
      I LOVE Adam Pascal's steely hard-rock vocals, but that's a personal preference. What you have to applaud him on though is actually knowing how to use his voice and also incorporate that kind of sound. It's easy to just scream and destroy your vocal cords, which a lot of famous rock singers (Stephen Tyler, for example) have done, but he hasn't done that. He's a powerhouse and a good singer.

    • @hitsuguyathe1
      @hitsuguyathe1 9 лет назад +1

      If/Then was also a great show, but all in all, I think Rent is overall better. More depth, more emotion. If/Then is still amazing! Don't get me wrong there, lol.

    So heartbreakingly relatable. I don't have HIV/AIDS or other STDs, but I do have a ton of medical issues, among other problems, and this is very much like how most relationships feel and end, with me essentially in Mimi's position; left behind to endure while so many run away from me and my baggage. I was lucky to fall back on family now, but half the household openly despises me and ignores me when they aren't picking fights and pitching insults. I said goodbye to their love some time ago.

    This scene and Halloween we're especially crucial. If not crucial, beautiful. This makes you tear up. These men whom you've grown to feel for have actual feelings. They're not the people we see now in stuff like Magic Mike(just for reference, don't bash me). It makes you want to hold these characters close and tell them it'll be fine. And the cut out portion of the song was crucial too! This movie was great but they cut too much.
    Mark:Hey! For someone whose always been let down who's running out of town?
    Roger:For someone who longs for a community of his own, who's with his camera? Alone?
    ... I'll call..... I hate the fall.
    This HURTS it truly HURTS you. These two are best friends. Have been for years. This is the goodbye that people can relate to. The argument you never meant to have that destroyed what you believed was the best relationship ever.

      +KrazyKirstie Yeah, Roger leaving Mimi obviously hurts their a romantic relationship, but the exchange between Mark and Roger is catastrophically damaging. It shows exactly how much they know/care for each other and they each stab the other right in the heart of who they are as human beings. It's intense and raw and I'm so frustrated it was left out.

    • @Sate12
      @Sate12 8 лет назад +5

      +KrazyKirstie With the fight between Mark and Roger, calling each other out in a way that makes their friendship implode, it also give more impact of the hug at the end of What you Own. Without this scene, the last time we see Roger and Mark together, they are still best friends. (Mark tries to calm the others at the funeral)It's nice to see him finally get fed up too.
      So with this scene, you see them fight, then in What You Own, they go back to being friends, realizing neither truly meant what he said last time they saw each other.

    My sister and I have watched Rent since about 2007. We both know the lines, the songs and the history for the most part. It wasn't until we were having fun one day on RUclips that we found these deleted scenes (we didn't have the DVD for a long time), Halloween and the full version of Goodbye Love. And like everyone on here, we can't understand why those two deleted scenes were DELETED! Immediately when we found them, we re-watched the movie, paused right before Angel's ceremony to watch "Halloween", then paused after the funeral scene, watched Goodbye Love... and everything - literally EVERYTHING - in the move made so, so, so, so much more sense! Mark was always my favorite character, but these two scenes solidified my love for him, Rodger and Mimi.

    They really need to re-release this film digitally with this scene included. The reasoning for deleting it was the worst - if I recall correctly (after 10+ years) Columbus says something in the commentary about the audience being too emotional for it after Angel's Funeral scene. The show has been performed for how many years, and some dude comes along and says it doesn't work? Sure dude. I love this movie but I can't sit through it in its entirety without getting disproportionately angry that this scene was removed and how it doesn't make any reasonable sense.

    Worst decision ever to cut this. This is one of the ost moving and shockingly real moments in the musical. As Mimi sings goodbye love you can truly feel the utter fear welling up inside her. She's 19 and she's dying. Goodbye love, goodbye any chance of love, goodbye LIFE! Mimi up until this point has survived by not giving one thought to the disease or her addiction. She's just lived in the moment and tried to have fun, but now for the first time she's thinking about what happens next and it terrifies her. And that's only some of why this moment was important to Mimi, without going into the massive effect of Mark and Roger and the importance of these moments between them. ugh this scene just has so much packed into it and was so important.

  • @actualtrash4437

    Okay so first time listening to this song and I just had some feelings. 1. Mark's motives as a character becomes much clearer, before it was like "he left his home and went to Manhattan and stayed there because he hates his parents???" but now it becomes more "He left home to pursue his passion in filming, as he got to meet more people he got more wrapped up in making sure they and their stories were remembered, whilst dealing with the pain of knowing that his friends are going to die". I kind of think that the whole "Mark is numb" thing poses the question of if Mark is depressed. I may be reaching but it certainly feels that way and like looking back at earlier scenes that may have been true for quite a while, but hey I might be imagining things. 2. mORE GOOD SIDE BENY YAY!!! 3. This explains more why Rogers decided to to go to Santa Fe, like I kinda felt that it was unmotivated unless he was chasing the dream Collins had proposed in the song Santa Fe. Him leaving so he can't get hurt? Really important to show in my opinion. 4. The fact that this shows Mimi getting worse makes it weird that they cut this out, without this scene it's easy to interpret that she just misses Rogers and Angel and gets worse later on. But this shows her getting worse and gives as stated in the song another reason for Rogers to want to leave. 5. I always thought it was strange that Mark and Rogers who seemed to have gone through a lot together just never adressed Rogers leaving but this clears that up. 6. I can't tell if Mark brings up Mimi because he thinks Rogers would stay because of her, or because Mark thinks that he (for lack of better wording) isn't good enough to stay for, I might be overanalyzing the way he goes "There's me there's Mimi" Makes it seem like he's either coaxing Rogers or right after he sings "There's me." He realizes that it won't be enough and adds "There's Mimi". I don't know though I just this song has a lot of emotions and I wasn't prepared for any of them so this might be my brain working a bit weirdly after having me cry for like 15 minutes.

    This is the main scene that shows the real person Benny is. Shame it was cut from the main film.

    this was so integral to mark and roger's friendship and really showing how hurt mark is that his best friend is willingly leaving him, not to mention mimi going to rehab.

    I love Mark's facial expressions throughout this entire song.

    I’m so mad they cut this scene and Halloween out. The two scenes that define Mark as a character!

    Thank you for sharing this! I can't believe they cut this out. It really does add to the movie and puts other pieces together. Once again, thank you for posting the video! =)

    So this is by far my favorite song from rent, and even though this scene isn’t in the movie, it’s my favorite scene. My favorite part of this song is the end, where mark starts with “Hey! For someone who’s always been let down, who’s heading out of town?”. Not sure why they left that part off. Anyways, I’m glad we are still able to see the deleted scenes!

    ugh! even in 2018 this frustrates me!!
    throughout the movie, you see every characters baggage, of sorts... except for mark. i had watched the movie before actually watching the real uncut performance, and i don't see why they would cut this scene other than the fact that the director's an idiot. the song had actually given us peeks of (along with halloween) that mark had some of this "baggage" too, just internally, a conflict within himself instead of with a partner.
    when watching the movie, i was wondering why mark seemed like such a perfect character, and not, ya know, having an internal crisis because all of his friends have HIV and are poor and depressed? turns out he was, but the idiot who was entrusted with this musical decided that this was uneeded??? i think that even in the REAl musical they could have touched on mark's baggage more...
    this was just a little rant, but i think an easy solution would just be to release an uncut version like The Outsiders did. im sure the rent hype has to be there somewhere and i know at least i would watch it. :)
    thx for reading!!
