Jesse L. Martin's voice is heaven sent.
Every time I hear Jesse sing “when your heart has expired” towards the end, it’s just instant waterworks. I know this is a movie, but this happens to so many people and it makes me sad to think about. This and every other illness
I feel you... but for me it's the moment Joanne starts singing and he turns around and realizes he's not alone and he sees his family... everyone who loves him and angel so much.

Truly heartbreaking. I remember seeing Rent at my community theater. You never think Angel would die. Then, all of a sudden, Angel is gone, and Tom loses the love of his life. Such a great character, and an absolutely soul crushing death and song.

My heart breaks Everytime I watch "Rent". Such a wonderful Cast of individuals that brought me to my knees, in Prayer, for anyone diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. My best friend died from AIDS and watching this movie, has helped in amazing ways.

I haven't even watched the movie, but somehow I am crying, listening the music and seeing the expression of the actors.
It is such a heartbreaking moment in the film. When I first saw this in the movie theater, I broke down crying. The pure emotion in this song is just overwhelming. You could tell how much Collins loved Angel.
I saw it in theaters. I highly recommend if you can handle the emotional journey. It’s so good. I can only imagine seeing this live 🔥.

Have to say, I've seen the musical live twice and watched this movie more times than I can count, and I prefer this scene to the one from the live show. Jesse L Martin knocked this sucker out of the park, anyone who can watch this without ugly-crying has no soul LOL. Unbelievably moving.....
True I am soulless, love this song but crying is something I save for my cat dying and when The Doctor and Rose get separated. Not sure why the second one specifically gets to me so much.
The play version of this when you see the spirit of Angel walk into the light is even more harrowing.

The moment the rest of the ensemble joins in and Tom turns around hugging his jacket I break down balling. He looks so vulnerable in that moment, he's baring himself to his friends and coming to grips with the fact that he'll walk alone now
My mum & I watched this movie whenever we could..Angel you are missed!!! Fly high my darlin & take care of my mum and my big brother Todd for me...
I can't begin to count how many times I have watched this one scene. Tears well in my eyes as I'm typing it in. And by the time the first note is played, I'm just wiping away. I'm sure the actors rehearsed the scene plenty of times to just sing it through. But, I don't want to get over the emotions I feel watching and listening to this. Faith in knowing love and dedication does exists!

No matter how many times I watch this clip, I get chills at 3:58 when everyone starts singing. Without fail, I get chills. You can feel the love, community, and heartbreak that everyone went through not only in this scene, but what it must have been like to live during this time in history. Nothing like it.

I'm sorry to all the other actors who have portrayed Collins, but Jesse L Martin is the definitive Collins. Especially when it comes to this song. He sang his heart out. You just feel. You eyes don't at least water up, you are a Vulcan.
For a long time after this movie came out I sang along but had not read official lyrics or putnkn subtitles. I thought the song ended with him singing "I will cover you all"

Can someone explain the "Circle Line"? Every production I've seen, even not in New York gets a laugh when Mark mentions the Circle Line and I never understood why.

Ok, so were all hust gonna gloss over the part of the play where she happily dances around the apartment proudly boasting about how she made a lot of money for killing a dog because it barked too much? Got it.
Serious question here. Been a renthead since the beginning. It was my understanding that angel was gay man and a drag queen. When he was in drag, he used she/her pronouns. When we are introduced to angel, he was not in drag and he referred to himself as a “boy”. When he died, he was not in drag. Obviously, in modern times, everyone wants to make angel into transwoman. If they do, aren’t they erasing the identity of two main gay characters in the show - angel and Tom collins?
This is a serious issue in the trans ideology. Most people who are led to believe they are trans are just gay. We see this with countless stories of detransitioners. In Iran, it’s preferable to be transgender (and forced to have surgery) than being gay. I’m all for inclusion, but the trans ideology conflicts with homosexuality and erases women (and men) as we know it.
Thank you so much for teaching me that I was not alone… even when I was in a place and time where I didn’t realize what all that meant. 🥲
