I remember Motorhead from the PC. My friend was showing it to me, because it was made by Dice, which we both knew from the Amiga days. I was pleasently surprised to find that the PSX port ran at 60 fps as well and it certainly was the most outstanding feature of it. Looking back now, it still looks pretty gorgeous, especially the art design. The moody, dark atmosphere is really enhancing the otherwise "bare" tracks.
4:52 should I visit a doctor if I literally see no difference between 30 and 60 fps? 21:35 by god, that's the most British person I have ever seen, following by someone who looks like his older sister, and for that alone taking the second place in the list of most British people I've ever seen. 42:25 I remember Populous took an entire memory card just for basic save. And I couldn't clean it afterwards, because of all the time I spend beating it. There's still a memory card somewhere at my house, filled with nothing but a massive Populous save.
Stumbled across your Psygnosis and Fear Effect videos the other day and can't believe you're not more famous already. Really cosy, funny, and insightful retro gaming content, and honestly one of the best recommendations RUclips has given me in a while. Have really enjoyed listening as I've been working this week. I hope if the algorithm poked you into my recommendations it does the same with lots more folk going forward, as it's well deserved. Thanks for the videos. I look forward to watching more!
I have been lucky enough to play Blaze & Blade with four players and it is an absolutely blast. The simple gameplay works super well as you can chat with your friends while playing and four player strategies are easy to pull off as they are more about coordination than game system knowledge. I still have the memory card somewhere with all the saves. We never beat the game, but I only have good janky memories of 4 people trying to fit on front of a small crt.
Love the series!!! Keep em coming!! I love the ps1 more and more with each passing generation, the gritty polygons and crazy beautifully animated cinematic and stunning soundtracks never get old, I could live everyday on this system alone as there are thousands of games to occupy freetime.....when I happen to have much... thats the real challenge
Yeah, man. Somehow, with the benefit of hindsight, it is now really obvious just how different and out there some games were back then. Truely a ton of crazy gems hidden amongst the PSX library.
Motorhead is great! It got quite a lot of attention here in Sweden back in the day, when Swedish-developed console games were still a rarity (there was also Kula World and Auto Destruct), but I think the brutal difficulty level is what kept it from achieving mainstream success. I've still never been able to beat that final race.
Just started binge watching these today. Really enjoying the series and has helped me find some hidden gems on the console. Very keen to try out Motorhead!
Gran Turismo 1's arcade mod had "Hi-rez"(60 fps) mode, where if you finished all races on hard difficulty, you'd open them. It was limited to 1 car only, with only 2 tracks available I believe. Thanks to this you can use a cheatcode on your Duckstation emulator and play BOTH gt 1 and 2 in its entirety in 60fps
Digging the new look, very clean and shiny. Some decent games in there, in fact two of them are dirt cheap on the PS3's digital store (Critical Depth and Motorhead) so need to give them a try. Great coverage again bud!
Can't believe you said all that wonderful stuff about Motorhead, _especially the music,_ but didn't mention that incredible industrial music loop that plays during the loading screens!
If I had it my way every video would be 3 hours long highlighting all the music but I gotta pick and choose unfortunately for the sake of peoples sanity 😅
Ahh good old Motorhead, i remember playing this with my friend next door growing up, we would purposefuly total our cars and be in hysterics! Might have to try playing it in a more serious manner now!
For a second I was REALLY confused, until I remembered I was thinking of another obscure PS1 game, Machine Head. Which oddly enough also has a musical link in some regions as "Machine Head" by Bush was on the airwaves while the game was released.
Machine Head is how the tuning peg on a guitar is called, it's also the name of most famous Deep Purple album, the one with Smoke on the Water and Highway Star, and I think the band Machine Head swears their name didn't come from DP's record.
@@KasumiRINA That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know of where the term came from, and filling me in more about earlier artists have used the term itself with their albums and music!
As soon as you said character and memory card--"ohhh nooooo." Critical Depth! Three friends and I got together multiple times to battle and figure out all kinds of things to do, especially with the big city underwater level, where we teamed up to pretty much pick the level apart and explore everything. Then we did a sort of jumping competition where we went to the level that is essentially two big pools you jump between and figured out which subs (and players) were able to jump the highest. Man that game was just fun. Is. Is just fun. Still is. I was always The French. That grabby arm thing.
It's a shame Blaze & Blade Busters never left Japan, but I would recommend giving its soundtrack a listen, it's a lot more memorable than the first game's, in my opinion. It was composed by Sotaro Tojima, probably most well-known for Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. After leaving Konami, he joined 343 Industries as Audio Director, and it was him who picked Neil Davidge of Massive Attack to compose the score for Halo 4.
Blazing Blade might actually be a good solo experience if you use Duckstation emulator, Duckstation > ePSXe when it comes to memory cards, and most other things.
Hebereke also appeared in Lemmings. Sunsoft I believe published the game in some capacity so there is a level where your Lemmings are walking all over the characters.
I grew up with PS1, and so I'm really enjoying this series. Some of my (maybe obscure or forgotten?) favorites include Tai'Fu Wrath of the Tiger, Treasures of the Deep, Monster Bass, Akuji the Heartless, Destrega, Raystorm and In the Hunt. (PS1 version of Frogger perhaps too.)
Some great games there, been really hankering to play Treasures of the Deep lately myself. Do you want to pick one of the games to add to the viewer wheel?
PS1 was REALLY good at rendering underwater effects, Tomb Raider has the most famous diving scenes but Critical Depth and Treasures of the Deep are also really good... I remember I finished In The Hunt, it's a nice 2D side scroller in SNES style.
It's funny, when the sword and shield appeared in the opening cutscene for Blaze & Blade, I was like "Is this Super Hydlide?" because they're the same design. I guess it's a little nod for T&E Soft fans.
just for intel; B and blade is on pc abandonware; more fluid, lightning fast saves; better textures. and for the objects thres a ! above the head of equipable characters when you open chests. we playedthis dozen of hours with friends. happy to see this here!
Oh Critical Depth ! I bought this game very cheap years and years ago, and finally played it just very recently ! I share the same opinion as you concerning the AI difficulty which is completly mindblowing (try the hardest difficulty, just impossible !!) and the lack of deathmatch mission based mode, but I also think it's an interesting game to try. I really liked the huge maps to explore, the amazing Hollywood-like music, the action and the background. I played it until finishing the "normal" difficulty, I enjoy it but it has lot of flaws. Graphics aren't good, AI isn't well balanced with those savage enemies, it gets very very repetitive and the final boss it's a complete joke by itself with those mini-UFO attacking you like if it was 11th September again. Defintly a Try game, but without big expectations. Also, my technique in this game against the agressive enemies, is to pick one ball, and to hide in the huge map collecting items while the others are killing each other, until there is nearly only one left with all the balls and blast every weapon in my inventory on him hahaha. Also, interesting the others games picked by this generous wheel.
Almost everything I read online said "You gotta just let the AI fight amongst themselves" which is the opposite to my neanderthal style of playing games, which is to go headfirst into everything! I'm still a little disapointed I didnt make it to the end of the game on Normal because the character specific cutscenes look insane!
I totally get the aesthetic change, and am enjoying it, but part of me does miss the WipEout 3 font (even though the WipEout 3 menus and UI was ass ugly...) So, with Critical Depth, my sleep-deprived brain kept hearing "deathmatch" as Depth match" and if the devs/publishers didn't actually use that, I am calling it a missed opportunity. Blaze and Blade is a new one to me, and I am intrigued, but... those memory card issues... Please tell me that the game came with a memory card packed in, a la Animal Crossing.
I'll eventually find a way to bring the font back, it's too good not to try implement elsewhere! Theres a good chance it's just me butcherring the word deathmatch, but I can't beleive I didn't put those two together! Oh you bet it didn't! The least it does it tell you is that game needs is 3-12 blocks... but i'd imagine anybody that lacks the space was in a for a rude awakening when starting it up for the first time.
@@SeanSeanson Oh, no, your pronunciation was fine! It was 100% me not processing it correctly. Still, missed opportunity by the devs. Ah, the mindset that led to memory cards in the first place: "Why provide this essential function, when we can make some extra money charging for it separately!" It made my first playthrough of Resident Evil extra challenging!
I’m in Austin for Formula 1 and just picked up Motorhead at a place called GameFellas Unfortunately being in Austin means I’m away from my PS2, so I can’t play it right now… Hopefully that’s 18 USD well spent, but we’ll see if my PS2 can run it properly. Wish me luck boys

Oh wow, Blaze & Blade: The Eternal Quest... I've played the PC version 4 years ago. I liked it, but I thought the platforming could be better. By the way, I love your "Obscure & Forgotten PS1 Games" series and also your "Japan Only PS1 Games" series.
Oh nice. The PC version definitely seemed like better of the two at least from what I've seen performance wise, but I don't think anybody is safe from the platforming. 😅 Glad you enjoy them, appreciate you watching!
It's a shame that you couln't get into Hebereke Poppoito. Btw, visuals on ps1 make the game quite hard to play. Saturn version looks much better - it is easier to distinguish the colors.
