Fun fact: the producer of "Road & Track's Need for Speed" and I went back and forth on music (or lackthereof).. He INSISTED that we put no music in stating, "when I drive fast I turn the music off". I said, "well, I street race probably a LOT more than you and it's music on all day, everyday". Needless to say, I stopped working on it and went back to work on my bread and butter, the Strike Series (I think it was Urban Strike or maybe Soviet Strike at that point...)

Hey Joe, quick correction: you can actually play with traffic and cops on Need for Speed for Saturn and PS1 if you choose head to head mode and play on the 3 original 3DO tracks (Coastal, Alpine, City).

I was fortunate enough to experience Valis 2 and 3 on the Turbo Grafts CD and Valis 3 on the Genesis. As I got older and had my first son in 1995 sacrifices had to be made so owning the latest in technology for a home video game console was put on the back burner. I grew up with the Genesis version of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and loved it. It is pretty much the same game as the SNES version, so either version is great in my book, though the SNES soundtrack is better. I had the 6-button controller, so the controls weren't much of an issue for me. I remember reading about the hidden flamethrower and finding the secret spot, but being really confused to why I couldn't actually find the weapon. Did not know it was only in the SNES version for some reason until much later. This has been the game I've always wanted a modern sequel to. Ghoul Patrol is a sequel, but I heard it wasn't that great, cause it wasn't originally developed as the game's sequel (I have both games on Switch now so I should try it). But there hasn't been anything since. I always thought a sequel would have been great for the DS/3DS as the bottom screen could have the radar and other elements while the top could be the gameplay. It's such a fun and unique game that just hasn't been replicated since.

There is a much easier way to grind for levels in Ys III. This was done on the SNES version, not sure if it will work on any other versions. The spot is at the end of Tigray Mine 2. Position yourself where the Raddel enemy can't touch you, but you can kill it and it respawns without you moving. Now, place something on the attack button so Adol will keep attacking. I usually do this before I go to bed. When I wake up I have a fully leveled Adol with max ring power and gold as well. A family member discovered this and since then, I have been finding other games I can use this on to level up while I sleep or go to work or whatever. This was my first introduction to AFK grinding or more like AFC.
Also regarding Ys: The Oath in Felghana, It was first released for Windows in Japan in June 2005, then for the PSP in Japan in April 2010 and later in North America and Europe. The American PC version was localized by Xseed Games in March 2012 (info from Wikipedia). I have both the PC and PSP versions and I like the PSP version a little more because of the Double Boost and New Game+.

Ys III on TGCD has choppy scrolling, but the input and character control is done at 60fps. That's why the choppy scrolling is easy to get used to; because Adol controls fine and responsive. The music really sets the environment. I played the SNES and MD versions back in the day as well, but the lack of the CD sound track - I always went back to the CD version. The TGCD version barely uses any of the system's color sub-palettes. Like 2 for the BG layer... out of 16. No idea why they did that. That has nothing to do with it being an original CD 2.0 game either.

Feels like a good time for Dave to pop in for an episode. Hearing his enthusiasm for games is always a pleasure.

Valis III on Genesis has some of the best music on the console. I guess there really is no accounting for taste.

If you do an episode comparing all the different versions of Ys 1 and Ys 2, including all the versions of Ys I&II, it'll be a 2 hour episode.

Of course I have wondered about the differences between different versions of multiplatform titles. That's why, besides Game Sack, I also watch Console Wars. Are we doin this?!

Hey joe I found a mistake! There ARE police in the saturn version but only in 1v1 races. Enabling a full grid disables cops

Great video as always. I always hated the non-3do versions of Need for Speed. They switched from sim to arcade racer and I believe it was a totally different team that ported it too. When I first "upgraded" to the PS1 version I was taken in by the better frame rate and sense of speed, but after spending time with it, the car mechanics felt so much less impressive. I still regularly play the 3DO version hah. I do have to adjust to the sluggish controls and framerate, but once I do, I still have such a great time trying to beat my (and friends) best scores.

At one point I had both SNES and Genesis versions of Ys 3 and decided to do my own comparison. It’s definitely a strange feeling playing basically the same game on different platforms. Sure you have notable differences but essentially the same thing. Really wish there were more game that could straight up compare the SNES and Genesis like this! That way we could definitely prove which system was, in fact, the best of the two!
In the end though, it really depends on your preference 😂

I mean it's probably better that games are pretty much the same across platforms but I am definitely nostalgic for when they were different. It was fun to rent the Genesis/SNES versions to see how they differed and in some cases like Mortal Kombat, I owned both versions because they were different enough to warrant it.

Yeah I liked it when they were different to. I like playing the different versions of Mortal Kombat, especially the Snes where it's sweat & the finishing moves like Johnny Cage are funny as he sticks his foot into you.
