Don't leave out my man Sota Fujimori - he composed about 1/3 of the Gungage soundtrack and did a great job as well. Most of his work is for Konami's various rhythm game series like DDR or beatmania, but he also worked on Contra: Shattered Soldier (with Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka) and Neo Contra on the PS2, as well as arranging the soundtrack for Castlevania Chronicles on the PS1. Both Yamane and Fujimori also worked on a Japan-only PS1 RPG called Elder Gate, a big stylistic departure from Gungage as you can imagine. That'd be a fun game to cover (assuming you haven't already, I haven't watched the JP PS1 games series yet🙃)

He's transitioned into doing a sort of 'play-by-play' style as he goes through the games because it's easier for him to get episodes out, which is understandable, but I don't like it quite as much, with the game having more of a factor in whether or not I like the episode than it did previously. So a channel with a classic Game Dungeon style talking about PS1 games most people don't remember with some dry humour sprinkled throughout? Now that's a winner right there. Throw in an Irish accent that I have fun imitating and making the decision to subscribe to you didn't take long at all. Keep it up, lad.
I picked up Gungage back when games shops still sold retro games and before ebay sucked all the fun out of the hobby. I knew nothing about it besides the Konami name (which convinced me to take a gamble on it). It may not be a hidden gem, but I still think it's a pretty fun (if flawed) game. Is it worth the silly money people are trying to flog it for on ebay? No way. But it was worth every penny of the £2.99 I paid for it.
You know, I found Gungage fairly cheap on Ebay and purely bought it because it's Konami at their peak. I'm glad my decision wasn't a bad one, as it sounds really fun!
I chose Poy Poy from a vhs/videogame rental store a handful of times as a child and played it with my father! As is your experience, I too have never met anyone else that played it or even had known of its existence haha

I'm from Australia (a PAL region) and we had a copy of Gungage, haven't really met anyone who's played it locally or in internet social circles, I replayed it recently actually after digging up the jewel case while going through old boxes, and getting flashbacks of it's existence. Def a clunky game, but I always adored it for pretty much the same reasons outlined in your video, and at that time I hadn't seen anything quite like it on any system to that point, and rarely played arcades or arcadey games. Chaos Break is another game that gives me similar vibes (but entirely different developer), but being a ResiEvil style game. Thought your coverage of it was really well conveyed, I subbed after watching the first Vol. when it was recommended earlier, and watching this reinforced that being a good decision. I've also had a similar goal of striving to find hidden gems. (I also played Disruptor recently, so far that's 1 title I'm familiar with in each Vol., will find out soon if that streak continues.)
Haha incredibly unlikely but rather lucky. I really wanted to give myself an excuse to explore the PlayStation library so I started making these videos and I knew I'd find a ton of games over time that were my jam. I'm always drawn to games that have an arcadey flair so gungage and chaos break stood out for obvious reasons. The fact they're both pretty pricey pal/Jpn only games make them that much more interesting.

And if i had to throw out an obscure game off the top my head that I haven't seen in your intro or explainer sequences yet, it'd probably be Granstream Saga, Oh I suddenly got flashbacks to another one, which has to be one of the most confounding and obscure games I've probably ever owned or played Guardian of Darkness haha Cryo Interactive games were as fascinating and sublime as they were janky. I think it came bundled with a controller and or memory cards at one of my local stores lol smart way to shift stock of weird titles that aren't being sold I spose.

I bought a Ps1 just to play Gungage, and it was worth it! Got the game and found out I couldn't play it. If you didn't know the JP version refuses to work on a modded system or PS2 in general and it's not easy to find documentation about this, it has to be a legit JP PS1. I've never heard of DRM that detects modchips, but this is one game that does.
Thats pretty interesting. I know theres a very small number of games that have issues like that, I know Poy Poy 2 which was also from Konami had similar issues with the PS2 although I never tried it with a Mod chip. Might be a Konami exclusive thing?
@@Justin-xs6tn From what I've read it's specifically modchips that cause the issue, there's code built into the game that checks for mods and prevents the game from starting, PS2 also has some games that are incompatible or won't run properly, but Gungage isn't one of them. There's a site I found that lists all of the games that use it, search for "Protected PSX games consolecopyworld" if you want more info on it.
I found your channel searching for Poy Poy 2! It is such a fantastic game and an improvement in every way over Poy Poy. I think a lot of people have experienced the original as a PSone Classic for PS3 while Poy Poy 2 fans got shafted on backwards compatibility for both PS2 and PS3. For the longest time I scoured the internet for ISOs after I foolishly traded or lost my copy but have since come upon happier times. Going back to it though I found that the PAL slowdown was teeeeerrible and it was particularly bad on the moon level, thankfully emulation can bring it up to the full 30 FPS of Poitter's Point 2 (what the hell kinda name was that anyway) so you don't need to learn japanese just to read the names of PsychoGloves. Just started going through your channel so if you haven't covered it yet there is at least one person looking forward to it! (me)
Always wanted to try Brahma Force actually, thought the mech UI looked really cool from what I'd seen. It's on the list of games anyway so hopefully it shows up in a future episode. Thanks for watching!
First game is great. I work around these areas. It is not as fun when it takes time...but you can add time to pass by listening to music or a podcast...like every comstriction worker, driver does
There's a similar but better PS1 digger game but I forget what it's called. It has the construction stuff but also modes where you're using the digger to smash up a car or serve food in a restaurant.
Gungage looks really cool and I've never heard of it. I'm at least checking out the soundtrack sometime! By the way, do you emulate all these games or are you playing them physically? I could never get the PS1 emulator to work.
Emulation just for ease of capture, but all the games are played with 0 emulator enhanememts just to try keep the experience as close to what you'd see on actual hardware. I'd recomend trying an emulator called Duckstation, really easy to set up and has great compatability. If you have any trouble, check out a step by step guide here on RUclips and you should be up and running in no time!

Back then Konami was the shit! Now Konami is just shit. Also i don't quite agree that Brain Dead 13 is the same tier as Hot Shot. Hot Shot is a game that truly deserves trash tier. Brain Dead 13 has quality but lacks some quality of life features. I'd say try Brain Dead 13 and see if you can deal with it. I'd play that any day over garbage like Hot Shot.
I miss Konami 😥 And I completely agree, the problem with a simple 3 level tier list is that they are pretty vague when it comes to overall qaulity within a specific tier. Theres a lot to love in Brain Dead 13 but I think that style of game is tough to appreciate in the modern era and Brain Dead especially really makes the user struggle to get into the good parts... and struggle I did! Hot Shot is definitive 1/10, bottom of the barrel, literal trash. Unfortunate that they are in the same tier, Brain Dead 13 wasnt a game I enjoyed but you're right it is leagues ahead of Hot Shot.

Gungage is really highlighting a lot of what the psx could do. Feels more like a tech demo with a bit to slow turning.

Back then Konami was the shit! Now Konami is just shit. Also i don't quite agree that Brain Dead 13 is the same tier as Hot Shot. Hot Shot is a game that truly deserves trash tier. Brain Dead 13 has quality but lacks some quality of life features. I'd say try Brain Dead 13 and see if you can deal with it. I'd play that any day over garbage like Hot Shot.

And I completely agree, the problem with a simple 3 level tier list is that they are pretty vague when it comes to overall qaulity within a specific tier.
Theres a lot to love in Brain Dead 13 but I think that style of game is tough to appreciate in the modern era and Brain Dead especially really makes the user struggle to get into the good parts... and struggle I did!
Hot Shot is definitive 1/10, bottom of the barrel, literal trash. Unfortunate that they are in the same tier, Brain Dead 13 wasnt a game I enjoyed but you're right it is leagues ahead of Hot Shot.
