    Another great video, thanks.
    The PS1 has such an interesting library. It was from such a weird and experimental time in gaming. PS1 gets a bad rap these days imo, with many people saying it's "aged poorly" I don't agree, I got a bunch of old consoles and a CRT this year and the PS1 might be the system I've played the most since.

    • @RyumaXtheXKing
      @RyumaXtheXKing 3 года назад +1

      They are not easy on the eyes. It can look quite good. But over the years I've really gotten into the aesthetic and appreciate what some were able to pull off. And I love the experimentation.

    • @EmergencyChannel
      @EmergencyChannel Год назад +2

      PS1 is dated in a lot of ways. PS1 was a experimental console, so a lot of the games are pure crap where they had no idea what they were doing. The 3D camera was a struggle for devs even into the early PS2 era.
      Same experimental focus lead to a lot of amazing games too. Probably more than we get today because the budgets and smaller dev teams made games easier to make and take risks.

    • @Gatorade69
      @Gatorade69 Год назад

      To be fair I do think the console has aged poorly, at least compared to the 8bit and 16bit systems. That doesn't kean that it's bad and should be avoided though. One of the main problems was 3d gaming at the time was just trying to figure out what worked and what didn't leading a bunch or games to control poorly and some games can look pretty bad. With that said I do still love the console and there'w plenty of games on the system that haven't aged poorly and are still a good time like Tomba, Tekken 3 or Klonoa.

    Gegege no kitaro is a great game but sadly a really expensive one too. Because it was literally one of the last few games ever released on PS1 it wasn't released in large numbers & sold terrible because most people had moved onto newer machines so there's not many copies out there in the wild. You're looking at a £200+ title if you can find one.

    Yet another batch of curios games.
    Also, was pleasantly surprised to see Crisis Beat mentioned here. As a child, I loved this game. So many hours spent and I almost beat it!
    But later in life I think I've spent ages just to search for it - you see, it's because my pirated copy (it was Russia after all), had a different name, tying it to a local movie about criminals.
    Thankfully I found it again~

    That’s funny - I’m almost certain the track at 8:13 in Lucifer’s Ring you said is among some of the worst you’ve ever heard is a reinterpretation of an actual Haruomi Hosono song from the 80s. An aggressively experimental electronic one called The Long History of a Humankind on the album The Endless Talking.
    Hosono and the trio he was in, YMO, were massively influential on video game music and Japanese music in general back in the day so it wouldn’t surprise me other than the odd choice of song to redo or at least be heavily inspired by.

    28:14 I'm 2 years late but you're not missing out on much with the Kitarou menu! The options are just stereo/mono sound, vibration on/off, and game difficulty (you were playing on normal, the one to the left is easy and the one to the right is hard). Looking at reviews in Japanese it seems like the game was criticised for how hard it was given that the series was targeted towards kids!

    Did the PS1 ever get a good beat'em up?
    Beat Planet Music looks interesting. I'd like to make some music with it. Is it hard for beginners? And it reminded my of iS, which you almost got next!!
    Kitarou is also cool. I love these 2D games. They're so pretty.
    PS: I appreciate fart guy. He tries his best.

    • @SeanSeanson

      My favourite beat em up on the PS1 is a game called Gekido, nice graphics and fun combo system, would be my top pick from what I've played at least!
      Thankfully it's very easy for beginners to get started BPM, it's very simple to just fiddle about with parts and create something that sounds good immediately, definately try it out if it seems like your kinda thing.
      Bless Fart guy, he's the heart and soul of the team.

    Always want it to try KItaro, but (specially after the video) seems a little to old school for me.
    A little off topic, I remember you saying that you don't have a CRT in one of your videos (might be wrong though), but have you tried playing with CRT Shaders?
    In specific the ones available via Retroarch? People don't think much about it, but most of the games from this era and before it were made with a CRT display in mind, personally I believe it make the visuals that much better specially with 2D sprites and pre-rendered backgrounds.
    For comparison I will link two comparison one for Legend of Mana i.warosu.org/data/vr/img/0058/98/1569197993705.gif and another for FFVIII i.warosu.org/data/vr/img/0058/98/1569275093263.gif (the clouds look way better with the shader). Both images are with the xm29 preset shader.
    Wouldn't recommend using to capture image for your videos, might look weird for some, and if your GPU don't have the option for integer scaling you might need to play the game with a small screen to make the shader work properly (in all honest it looks fine even with fullscreen)

    • @SeanSeanson
      @SeanSeanson  3 года назад +2

      Cheers for the comment and you're absolutely right, I'll look into that.
      It's been a long time since I've had the space for CRT but it's always my preferred way play anything pre HD era. But if I can use a few tweaks to get the capture closer to the original look I'd be pretty happy.
      Thanks for the advice!

      You might not like this answer, but I like to use the opening and closings to to get people inticed into exploring the libraries themselves rather than directing them to the source, sort of a visual taster of whats out there. I like to promote curiosity, because if you go out looking for these yourself you might end up finding a whole lot more in the process, these videos only scratch the surface, and if I did these till the day I die I still won't have shown everything.

    7:47 "Hello? My eyes are up he-... actually, nevermind"
    8:13 What in the world, this reminds me of that one awful Resident Evil trumpet song
    I'd say I have pretty low standards when it comes to SNES and PS1 game music, stuff generally sounds good to me, especially from Japan... but this games soundtrack (I've looked up the other songs) is just objectively bad. The Crisisbeat soundtrack for example sounds totally fine, so something must've happened. Maybe they had no budget for a real composer?
    It's kind of sad, I feel like this had the potential to be a pretty decent game if it had more budget and development time.

    • @SeanSeanson

      Yeah it really is a shame. it's fun for what it is but it really could have been much better with a lil more time and budget.

    Most people in art use gallery’s and museum and books to look at references. I love to use video games and bring them to live in my paintings.

      Ah thank you! I really appreciate the comment.
      Emulators are thankfully a lot easier to set up nowadays. I'm not too sure what the best emulators are for mobile/tablets but I think the easiest from my experience is...
      PS1 - ePSXe
      Dreamcast - ReDream
      If you have any trouble setting them up, there's always an easy to step by step guide on RUclips.
      Finding the games is a bit tougher, but generally speaking archive.com should have everything you're looking for, just type "PS1 archive" or "Dreamcast archive" and you should have access to everything you need :)
