A beautiful tradition. Scots remember: only tradition preserves nationality. My mother (1920) was a nurse in the Polish army at the Ardennes front during the war. During the 1944 offensive she found a badly wounded Scotsman with a broken pelvis. She donated blood for his operation and cared for him until he could return. They exchanged names and towns amd numbers, as neither knew what would happen next. In 2001 I found a letter in my letterbox from Scotland still addressed to her maiden name. She had written back to him saying that she had been seriously ill with heart disease since her German captivity. And this Scot turned out to be a cardiologist. When he found out, he flew to Poland, took my mother to his hospital in Glasgow, operated on her and drove her back to Warsaw. He announced us: any money. My mother lived until 2011 and a former patient gave her 10 years to live. And how not to love Scotland?
