    I think here we see the one weakness of Thrawn: Micromanagement. If I remember correctly, he does that almost every time he's in command of a fleet. Thus, once he was killed by his bodyguard, his fleet simply couldn't win anymore because they probably didn't even know the complete plan.
    Of course, this micromanagement is also one of Thrawn's strengths.

    • @LiamCameron77
      @LiamCameron77 4 года назад +99

      The one thing I like more about the new Thrawn is that that he makes sure his crew understands his methods and can operate withought micromanagement by thrawn.

    • @SJHFoto
      @SJHFoto 4 года назад +54

      I agree to a point. I think that Thrawn was so far ahead of the other captains/officers strategically speaking, that they wouldn't have known what to do. Yes, he left a battle plan for his clone in the Hand of Thrawn duology, but even if Pelleon had access to that, he would know what the next step was in the war, but not how to handle unexpected events (like the Rebels getting access thru the Golan Platform to attack the station. Thrawn was saying that this was fixable, but before he could continue, Rukh killed him. I think Thrawn could have reclaimed victory, but no one else could have. In fact, from all other books, evidence shows that Pelleon is probably the 2nd smartest in the fleet, and he was clueless. A lot of the others might have just mindlessly threw themselves at the Rebels and been defeated-especially since Ackbar and Bel Iblis are probably smarter than any imp commander sans Thrawn
      But also, if Thrawn was given that Super Star Destroyer, I think the Rebels would have been finished

    I believe we all agree that Admiral Ackbar was an extremely fortunate commander. He had fully taken Palpatine's bait at Endor, got his fleet into a precarious position where he was facing decisive defeat and only prevailed because of Ewoks, and because Palpatine and Vader were killed during the battle. Just 5 years later, Admiral Ackbar is once again outsmarted, this time by Grand Admiral Thrawn, who saw through his diversions, and prepared to annihilate the New Republic fleet which he almost did, since just like Palpatine, was killed during the battle, giving Ackbar the chance to turn the tide of the battle. Generally, Ackbar is the only general I 've seen that escapes "traps" in which ironically has already fallen into.

    • @Paerigos
      @Paerigos 5 лет назад +71

      Ackbar was a competent commander who planned well... unfortunately he was not good at field improvization.
      If he ran from Endor he would be wiped by iterdictors... (Lando was the person who persuaded him to keep on)
      He could not run from Bilbringi...
      And well - even at Ebaq 9 he did not expect Vong to make mad suicide run against Ebaq...
      when things dont go according to plan, Ackbar is the last person you want in command. Garm Bel Ibliz, Wedge, Tycho Selchu, even Drayson... they can improvize. Ackbar not really.

    • @Ares99999
      @Ares99999 4 года назад +97

      @Paegrios I don't think any of this is very fair to Ackbar, especially as this based on the Legends version. In Legends, its outright stated that Ackbar was pivotal in building the Alliance Fleet from virtual scratch, using small-scale raids and battles to systematically season and harden his forces while always keeping the majority of it whole.
      He wanted to run at Endor not because of any cowardice, but because he felt that losing the main fleet would cripple the Alliance irreparably. Once Lando convinced him, he fought tenaciously and kept the fleet together.
      I distinctly remember that the Imperial commanders fell for Ackbar's trick... except for Thrawn. Pelleon clearly thought Bilbringi was the wrong move, for instance. So it's not like Ackbar didn't create a solid plan, he just went up against the one guy who saw through it.
      However, while the Republic Fleet was being pressured, unlike other battles it was still holding its ground due to Ackbar commanding. Yes, Thrawn likely would have won, but not without suffering far more casualties than ever before.
      Ackbar was old and outright dying during Ebaq 9, and refused command even thought it was offered. It was also because of him that the situation was ultimately turned against the Vong.
      Give the guy a break, will ya?

    Somehow I imagined when he said "Cloaked Asteroids" Thrawn just having a good giggle in his mind about a bunch of Invisible space rocks zooming about smashing enemy ships with them not able to figure out 1. What hit us. 2. Where did this big powerful thing that hit us come from? I mean it's a really smart tactic and a very good one to annoy and troll your enemy. Just one which if you think about it is a pretty oddly funny one. Cloak a bunch of Asteroids and have them fly about and torment your enemy....let alone around their Capital planet. Thrawn sure is one good tactician and likes trolling his enemies... Truly a wise combat leader!

    In the end of the battle, the Imperials lost a few escort ships and only one badly damaged Star Destroyer. However, Ackbar’s fleet was decimated with the majority of his ships damaged or destroyed.
    I believe if Thrawn had survived and defeated Ackbar, this would’ve convinced the other warlords to fully back him. I have no doubt Thrawn’s aim was to gain the support of the Pentastar Alignment because they have the biggest avaliable fleet.
    I’m not sure if Delvardus, Harrsk, or the Teradoc Brothers would join him but because of Zsinj’s connections with Thrawn, I can see the remnants of Zsinj’s fleet who joined the various warlords abandon their positions to join Thrawn.
    Loyalists like Admiral Teren Rogriss may see Thrawn as a legitimate leader for the Empire and gather as many forces to join Thrawn.
    Now that his fleet now includes the Pentastar Alignment fleet and the various warships from other warlords that joined him, I can see Thrawn making a beeline to capture Coruscant and the shipyards at Kuat. This will shatter New Republic morale even if they don’t capture the New Republic leadership.
    Let us remember that the Empire had an unknown number of Bellator, Assertor, Mandator III, and other unknown classes of Star Dreadnoughts. I have no doubt that Thrawn would make their capture a priority.
    We would likely see a duel between the Lusankya and the Reaper but with Thrawn in command, he would probably have plans to capture the Lusankya instead of destroying it.
    Once the New Republic was dealt with, he would turn his attention to the warlords and give them an ultimatum. Join or die.
    Even if they join him, Thrawn would either keep them around to see if they’ll change, or eliminate them to avoid any chances of a power struggle.

    • @nikolasrhine3252
      @nikolasrhine3252 6 лет назад +6

      Read the chapter in "The Last Command" again. Pellaeons view at the beginning of the assassination scene makes it clear that the battle is going south and the New Republic forces are closing in on them. Even if Thrawn survived, the New Republic would have taken Bilbringi and with the destruction of Mount Tantiss, Thrawns campaign would be over. No outside force could bounce him back from the dual disaster of Bilbringi and Wayland.

    • @gregorylumban-gaol3889
      @gregorylumban-gaol3889 6 лет назад +11

      Nikolas Rhine It was going south because Thrawn was no longer issuing commands and they went into disarray. The New Republic fleet was already decimated before Thrawn was assassinated. Pellaeon doesn’t give himself enough credit. He was capable of destroying the rest of the New Republic forces with just sheer numbers but was hesitant to lead them. Again, by the time Pellaeon issued the retreat, the Imperials had minimal losses while the majority of the New Republic forces were either badly damaged or destroyed. The New Republic didn’t win this battle, Rukh was the sole reason why the Imperials lost.

    • @KraNisOG
      @KraNisOG 6 лет назад +5

      Nikolas Rhine as he said above, the other warlords would be likely backed him, and if they hear he defeated Akbar, they'd have given him more. You give Akbar too much credit, and Thrawn not enough. Pealleon said that Thrawn would've won, but he was no Thrawn.

    I'm surprised that Palleon was so eager to signal a retreat, considering how much he is venerated later in Imperial history. I wonder if there was less cohesion and/or professionalism among the imperial rank-and-file than what was implied to the reader from just The Last Command.

    Ah yes, Thrawn looked at some art once done by Admiral Ackbar, and magically deduced his plan.
    The Thrawn series was really well-written, but some of the ideas were just plain dumb. I was getting really sick of him magically being right every time. It would have been nice to see a genuine miscalculation on Thrawn's part, and see him hastily try to improvise.

    Ok I have a question and a battle strategy.
    Did the Empire or Thrawn uses mines?
    In this battle Thrawn had Interdictor star destorys to pull the the alliance fleet out of hyperspace. Thrawn knew that the alliance was coming, why not mine the area the interdictor would pull them out at?

  • @howard2liu

    I've never understood what happened at the end of this fight. So Thrawn ambushes the Republic fleet and starts pulverizing it. Wedge muses that threatening the shipyards would force the Imperials to either A) divert ships from the ambush and let the Republic escape, or B) lose the shipyards. The smugglers break out and the shipyard is threatened, Thrawn is killed, and apparently Pellaeon chooses option C: run away and fail both objectives. If they were going to withdraw, surely the logical place to retreat to would have been the shipyards they wanted to protect, with those scary Golan platforms, but no, it seems they just left.
    Was it that Pellaeon and everyone besides Thrawn just don't know how to fight? Did they stage the ambush with an inferior force, counting on Thrawn's tactics to win the day? Did C'baoth's death hurl all the Imperial crewers into confusion like at Endor? It just seems like the fight jumped from "Republic looking desperately for a way to escape" to "Imperials trying to get away before they're destroyed," and Zahn didn't really explain what happened to eliminate the Imperials' numerical advantage. I originally thought that maybe I'd misread it because of unclear writing, and the Republic fleet did run, leaving Bilbringi in Imperial hands, but after looking it up, apparently the Imperials really did give up and leave.

      The animation is fine as its own thing, but cutting it down to five seconds would be better (if at all possible).
      His title card is absurdly long, however. That doesn't need to linger for ten whole seconds. At most, it really needs two or three.

    Honestly, there’s something kind of prophetic/poetic about Thrawn’s death. At the beginning of the first book of the Thrawn trilogy, he criticizes the Emperor/the Second Death Star fleet for how they entirely depended on battle meditation, or micromanagement, for their success. But in the end, his micromanagement killed his own campaign, because after he died, his own fleet floundered without his micromanagement just as those guarding the Second Death Star did.

    Growing up as a Star wars nerd. I was a huge Skywalker fan boy. As i got older, and started reading the books. In one section before the battle. One of Thrawn's Captain's volunteered to go to the site. When Thrawn said, " Ill go there my self". I was like ooohhhh they bout to die lol! Why Disney decided to ignore possibly the greatest antagonist in all of Star Wars is a mystery to me...

    By the way the best way to deal with it would be to keep ships into a Elastic position that'll allow for them to form up quickly should one of the defensive platforms Be broken or destroyed,Or do what Hannibal did against the romans and slowly begin to encircle the republic force As the battle went on this time with a larger cohesive force,Especially since only 1 platform was disabled meaning the others could possibly still respond
