      @FatalShadow13 6 лет назад +10

      HOnestly I don't think being force sensitive would have change much for Thrawn. Being force Sensitive does not make you omnipotent, i.e. Palpatine, Darth Krayt, Darth Malgus, etc. He had no reason to think Rukh would betray him like he did, and so had no chance to prepare against it. HIs last words summarise it best, "But... It was so artistically done."
      I mean true, had he been able to learn Battle Meditation, he would have had to use an unstable clone like C'baoth, instead doing it himself, probably even better. That alone is scary enough.

    The thrawn pincer is my favorite thing he does. It makes creative use of technology and is tactically fun with being able to warp in extra ships wherever he wants. If there was a strategy game the implemented it I would bring an interdictor or two everywhere i went just to use it.

  • @rh352
    @rh352 6 лет назад +11

    Thrawn's tactics here are even more impressive when you consider that new groups of dreadnoughts (usually two or three at a time) keep dropping in throughout the battle-always right where the New Republic thinks it has found an escape route. Also, when you consider that most of those ships had to be on their way BEFORE the New Republic started to move so they could arrive in time to cut off their escape in time, you really see how far ahead Thrawn plans and just how well he knows his enemies. The only reason the MC80 cruiser is able to get away and threaten the interdictor is because it wasn't where it was supposed to be when the two dreadnoughts dropped out of hyperspace. It was Garm's A-Wing slash that saved the New Republic fleet from total destruction. As it was, the New republic lost a lot of ships as well as the planet.
    Thrawn's battle plans, while brilliant and terrifyingly effective, often require precise timing and coordination between separate task forces. If you can disrupt their coordination or throw off their timing, you have a chance to escape. Though, as you've pointed out in another video, Thrawn adapts very quickly, so you'd better take the opportunity to escape instead of trying to turn the tide of the battle because he WILL regain the upper hand soon. And if you're still around when he does, you're dead!
    Also, I love Thrawn's use of illusion and misdirection in the book "Thrawn." It really shows how he is still a genius level tactician and strategist even when he doesn't have weeks or months to study his enemies and prepare the perfect assault.

      it's wise to do it with some fast moving ships to scout ahead. assuming you play with the empire [as I Always do], you use some TIE as scouts and one or two tartan cruisers for anti-fighter role. then bring in the heavyweights when you have a better idea of the enemy force. I try to do it in such a manner that the enemy fighter chase my few TIEs , bringing them to the tartans which solves the problem. good specially to get rid of X and B wings. Y or A wings would be taken care of by all those the cruisers squadrons.

    I really like these videos.
    Firstly without a doubt Thrawn is a fantastic Star Wars Admiral one of the best. But in context I think it goes without saying the new republic aren't victorious, the seniority of the officer s and pilots had been living and breathing on survival tactics during the rebellion and living to tomorrow is not glorious always but is a victory.
    That being said the Empire and remnants have usually been backed by superior numbers and "mysterious" reserve forces. Any time the Empire (or remnants) don't literally destroy all of their opponents in battle seems like losing. With supurior numbers, resources and with the brilliance of Thrawn added here it doesn't feel like a victory for Thrawn either.
    I like to believe Thrawn could literally have had the same results with half the numbers because of his tactical aptitude.
    Still you're kicking but with these videos keep them coming! :D

    I loved the Thrawn Trilogy books!
    The battles were described so well. (detailed enough to give a comprehensive picture, but not so bogged down in detail that your own imagination couldn't take the Director's chair)
    Also, it does a great job of establishing just what sorts of assets the New Republic has in Garm. A very clever and even inventive tactical leader. (creating the A-wing slash on the fly) But who is also very attentive. While he is definately NOT on Thrawn's level, and lacks his predictive abilities, he is not someone you can trick with the same ploy TWICE. (being WAS the one to identify the Thrawn Pincer as it was about to be deployed against Couroscant.)
    Of course, even in this Thrawn "one ups" him. Immediately identifying the change of tactics of Couroscant's defenses when Garm is put in charge, and even accurately guessing that it was Garm whom the Republic had put in charge!
    All-in-all, a great way to convey, in the literary sense, that the New Republic IS powerful, DOES have very capable people (outside the central Heroes), and is NOT completely helpless . . . . while STILL making it clear that they are still outmatched!

    About the A-Wing Slash, I always thought it was aimed to leave a clear attack vector for the A-Wings against the fighter screen, not against the cruisers. As far as I could understand, the TIEs follow the X-Wings, leaving a "turkey shoot" for the A-Wings, and with the fighter screen disintegrated, the X-Wings would attack the cruisers freely. Awesome video!

  • @wolfsigma
    @wolfsigma 6 лет назад +1

    I think one of the key idea's behind the 'Slash' was that the heavier and slower X-wings shield the lighter faster A-wings with their overlapping shields. I only say this because in a later book Admiral Pellaeon uses an 'A-wing Slash' with Preybirds for X-wings and torpedoes for A-wings and comments on the overlapping shields and also, like you said, the hidden signature.

      As most Rebel/New Republic Star fighters, A-wings do have a multirole capability, in this case it come in the form of having up to 12 Concussion Missiles in each A-wing fighter.
      So imagine a squadron of twelve A-wings unloading all the missiles on a Victory Star Destroyer, while engaged with an MC80 cruiser.
      That's 144 concussion missiles the Victory suddenly have to deal with, on top of the barrages of turbo/Ion cannon comming from the MC80 cruiser.

    Garm bel Iblis is my favorite Star Wars Legends character, and I like the interesting tactics used so I enjoy both the battle and the breakdown. I had never considered the idea that Garm's fleet wasn't in the fight from the beginning, or that Thrawn was trying to lure New Republic reinforcements into a trap.
    I never liked the fleet makeups shown in the novel though. I vastly prefer corvettes or frigates to heavy cruiser and Star Destroyer scale vessels so I was disapointed that the smallest capital ships mentioned in the battle were Dreadnaught class.

    love this series, but just one small detail of constructive criticism:
    would it be possible to color coordinate the outlines or full shape of the top down ship icons you used in future videos? at some points I found it slightly confusing especially when two factions make use of similar ships (dreadnaughts in this case). it would just make it that much easier at a glance for the audience to understand the battle situation from a graphic standpoint. otherwise, keep up the good stuff, definitely one of my favorite channels out there.

  • @CFRF13

    While Turkana may have had a solid showing of Mon Cal Cruisers, most Alliance/New Republic Task Forces had just 1-2 Star Cruisers at their core with a number of escorting frigates, corvettes, and/or gunships. Something else to note is that unlike the Empire, the New Republic didn't have thousands of sailors lying around to man their dreadnoughts right off the bat, which is why they usually converted their dreadnoughts into assault frigates. It's likely that a number of Star Cruisers and Bel's original six dreadnoughts, along with other ships as reinforcements, made up the bulk of the New Republic ships present. The responding force that Iblis commanded may have even been the New Republic's latest iteriation of the Rapid Response Task Force.

    Admiral Pellion use Gam Bell Iblis "A Wing Slash" against a pirat attack in a simliar way. He started fighters (bought shielded pirat fighters, not ties) and put them in a tight formation. You have a shield overlapping. Enemy starships fire on them. He fire is proton torpedos from his the schimaere (modified). The torpedos are not visible for the enemy shils on sensors because of the fighter emission. He break of suddenly the formation of his fighters in diffrent directions. The ship fire follow them and recognize too late the real danger.

    man i love these videos especially of the Legendsverse, but I would say the Thrawn pincer while an excellent strategy up front has one flaw in that while it allows the Empire to bring ships to specific spots to initiate their attacks, the best way to counter it for the Republic is to not send in all of the reserves immediately and then when the Interdictor lights it's grave projectors, send a comm to the rest of the reserves to fly in on a vector that would pull them out in range of the interdictor. use Thrawn's strategy against him.

    Believe me, you can also use attack strategies in Empire at War Thrawns revenge.
    If a fleet is stronger than yours and you want/have to destroy them, its anyway possible to win. Think like Thranw: Lern to know your enemy first: How strong is your enemy, what are his units and how do he/the ki use them. Then make a trap, based on their behavior.

    Suggestion for a new series: Picking capital ships either from suggestion or your own list you discuss their role in chat, their strengths and weakness, etc just like a vs video but then also describe how you think the faction that owns the ship missused or used to it's full potential and what you would change in their use in combat

    What I liked in the books, and especially the Last Command, is that even Thrawn had limits to his genius. For instance, he saw through Ackbar's ploy and successfully caught the Republic Fleet. But he never considered that the Smuggler Fleet would take things at face value, attacking the same place because they were convinced the Republic and Empire would fight elsewhere. It opened a fight on two fronts that Thrawn wasn't prepared for.
    Thrawn was great, but not at all invincible.

    Few comments - the VSDs were just knocked out not destroyed as MC cruiser was rushing for interdictor... if it wasted time to mop them up it would be death sentence.
    also the Xwings mopping up ties in this case was not that one sided - republic fighter wings were also beeing damaged.
    (and side not... I find it quite funny how Gil Pelleaon uses modified A-Wing slash (with shielded Ties and torpedoes fired from Chimera in their wake) against pirates to determine if its actually Bel Ibliz refusing his offer of peace in Spectre of the Past/Vision of the Future)

  • @Duchess_Van_Hoof

    I have come to realize that the Thrawn Pincer and his earlier microjumps are nothing but an attempt by Thrawn to retrofit Chiss naval doctrine to the imperial fleet. If people knew what he was, his training and his cultural background then they could have been prepared, yet he never makes that crucial mistake.

    Too be fair, we should look at some flip sides of Thrawn as he wasn't perfect. The one art piece he could never understand from Kalee, and had to win by orbital bombardment, which he hated to do, and his final battle, which he may have lost had it been allowed to be played out I think he said in conversation with Pelleon "Sir, should we order a retreeat?" "No we haven't lost yet.", then Pellon a great commander in his own right order the retreat after Thrawns death, which being assassinated another oversight of his. Another oversight in that final battle, was he did not expect Talon Karrde and friends to show up even though he had done plenty to piss them off earlier. A final mistake was not seeing the betrayal of Joruus C'baoth, which he tried to stop by sending one of his commanders, but he was mind dominated like everyone else. Writing this out I've come to see great parallels between Thrawn and Napoleon, both were tactical geniuses, but at the height of their power they got overconfident and made mistakes.

    IMO, the Bel Iblis maneuver doesn't exactly work that way. But the result is the same. From what I understood, you engage the enemy with your first squadron, then order them to retreat on a 90° angle with the second squadron axis of attack. Then you can flank the enemy fighters and open a clean shot against the main target or just destroy the enemy squadrons, before you order the first squadron to return to attack again.
    I also believe there is a total of 15 units in the New Republic strike group, losing around 5 capital ships in the battle. I also believe the NR does have at least one Victory-class star destroyer on its side - maybe the Orthavan. And I also believe Bel Iblis already had command of the whole strike group of 15 ships, only backing up planetary defenses. What I also understood from the book is that Thrawn isn't there. It's one of the secondary fleets that uses the new imperial tactics.
    Bel Iblis is surrounded and faces an overwhelming force, very well led and trained, but still manages to force the Interdictor out to hyperspace, saving his strike group. While Thrawn is obviously a better tactician than Bel Iblis, the Republican general proves himself to be the most valuable commander on the field of the New Republic.
