- Yep... I install Half Life 2 on Windows XP, and I tell you a little bit about my experience with Half Life, and why HL2 is just oh so important for gaming. Also, It's 20 years old. That's old. I feel old now. Everything hurts. I should take a nap.
Here is the link to the video from the standalone version creator with all up to date links. All credits go to @XJR9000
Disclaimer: you have to own a legally purchased version of Half Life 2 for PC to do this.

Love the video! I remember playing HL2 on a single core 2.2ghz amd emachines with the notorious nvidia chipset and integrated graphics. The game ran pretty well, like you said, load times not being great, they definitely weren’t on a 5400rpm drive! It surprisingly ran episode 2. But maxed out it ran fine, only the flashlight slowed it down.
Thank you for stopping by! Man, integrated graphics sometimes can come through for us, and I'm glad it did for you back then. I think I was running an ATI all in Wonder 8500dv or 9500, I don't remember. Definitely ran it on a dual core laptop with a GeForce go 6600 at that time.
@ I’ve heard people say it was hard to run back then, I never found that to be the case. Possibly people trying to run a pentium II or something less than a 1ghz tualatin pentium III. I didn’t build a pc until I was 15 around 2012. The jump from the nforce integrated with a amd athlon 64 2.2ghz, 1gb ddr2, to all used amd fx 8350 “quad core” GeForce 560ti and 6gb ddr3 was a mind blowing jump. I miss building computers under 350 bucks that were fairly decent!
@opl4866 that is quite a jump for sure, and yeah I do miss that era as well. I remember the early 2000s had large leaps in graphics tech, so I can imagine someone with a low end pentium 3 trying to run Hl2 on hardare that barely runs xp well can be challenging. You also had doom 3 and unreal tournament 2003/2004, farcry pushing graphics boundaries too, and I seem to remember source engine being one of the more scalable. I could be wrong
Awesome! Glad the video is up.
Thank you!
Ur channel is an awesome find! I love the commentary 🔥
I really appreciate that! Let me know if there is anything else you may be interested in seeing from my channel.
@ I could definitely watch you live stream playing some classics like this doom 3 or even the ps2 era gta games either way man badass vids been watching ur vids while playing through Halo CE today
This video is something I really wanted to see, thanks for the faithful experience
Super happy to have provided that for you, thanks for stopping by!
3:44 correction: Portal was never a mod
In case it didn't get conveyed properly, I generally meant that many, many games and mods came out because of the efforts of the modding community and the ability to mod the game and Source Engine. If you'd like to check out a very brief overview of the development of portal from its modding roots, check this part of the Wiki article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(video_game)#Development
Thanks for stopping by!
@@Nick-ology actually, the article there says that development started from an entirely different original game called "Narbacular Drop", it's only when valve got them to work on Portal proper that they took Half Life 2's engine and modified it for their own needs
@@arekrekas213 correct, they were students and developed a prototype proof of concept demo for a career fair, the took a tour at valve after getting noticed and got offered to help build the Portal game based off modifying the Source engine. More to the point, Portal is just one of many future games based off of the source engine and the success of Half Life 2. Thanks for commenting!
i use to do that on my Windows XP machine last year
Fantastic! I hope it worked well for you.
This was on my recommendation and I love it! Can you install Halo: Combat Evolved on Windows XP?
Thank you for checking it out, I'll have to add that to my list. Thank you for the recommendation!
Is that the Valve official hoodie?
I was finally about to get one, then the store went down.
Yes it is! This is my second one, I wore my first one out after years of use, then got this one as a gift. It gets a lot of use!
Where the patched version link?
For some reason my update to the description didn't save, I have it linked in the description and pinned post.
But since you directly asked, here is the link to the video from the standalone version creator with all up to date links. All credits go to XJR9000
