This is the perfect machine for what I need. Could care less that it may lack some of the features folks want as far as sample manipulation or lack the features the Digitakt or Octatrack have...I think what you get far outweighs what you don't. The sequencer alone is HUGE as far as a plus in this price range and I think this will help my Volcas shine even more than they already do. Can you tell I'm psyched?!
Hah, yes I can! I'm sure you will really enjoy it. I should point out that some nice updates came after my 2 Model:Samples videos. In particular, at the time there was no "sample-locking" (i.e. per step sample selection), which opens a lot of choices. And also, at the time you couldn't use the pad velocity as a modulation source. It opens up things like sample speed depending on how hard you hit the pad (while using a fixed volume that doesn't depend on the hit). I also did some things on IG with using a sequenced velocity to change sequence parameters all at once on the cycles, kind or hard to explain but it's an early 2020 post over there, maybe feb or march I think?) Anyway, enjoy it all!!! ps don't hesitate to use an external reverb - i think that's really the best solution when you want the native delay repeats to all have the same sound👍🏻
@@undulations Another cool thing about the pad velocity as a modulation source is if you've got retriggering turned on. It allows you to slowly apply more pressure over time to the pad for an evolving effect, which I think is insanely cool, and I can't think of too many other devices that allow for that kind of behavior.
@@Gwyn94 That is very good info! I used a lot of high speed retriggers in the Model:Samples granular video, but being able to use velocity as modulation hadn't been added at the time. Meanwhile, I used it some in the YT Cycles videos, but I don't think with retrigger - I need to try that. Maybe the best velocity-dependent thing I did with the Cycles was on Instagram, a clip that shows turning _off_ velocity-dependent amplitude, making a sequence with different velocity settings, setting up some velocity modulation to the Shape parameter - but then changing the depth while the sequence plays. I think it gives an A/B morph between two different sequences that's hard to achieve other ways (where sequence A has fixed shape values per step, no velocity modulation, and sequence B has a different set of shape values per step, and the mod depth lets you move smoothly between the two). Another great video. Love to see these devices used in interesting ways like this. So many Model: Samples videos, although sounding great, are often quite generic. Moving beyond the bread & butter groovebox ideas really show how interesting these devices can be I think.
I just got a M:S and I like the workflow and possibilities but I was thinking about ways to use it "differently" even though I didn't even scratched the surface of "normal use"... and your video just popped out. I didn't figure out yet that the feedback could be set to equilibrium and keep going almost forever at 100-ish feedback while keeping perfect sync with the seq. Brilliant revisit of the delay looper technique applied to model:samples and saves me quite some time of research on the intrument. Now I can focus on the more creative side exploring this with sample locking, tempo changes and all other cool features of this machine. Nice job and your speech and tone is actually quite pleasant. It might be as chilling as the instrument itself. I want samples of you telling stories or random suff, that should be great on ambiant music, please make a sample pack of your voice. :) :) :)
I find that request both flattering and hilarious😀. I've had plenty of requests for sample packs but never of me talking. I will add that to my list of future uploads. Moreover, thanks very much for checking out the video🙏🏼! I still love the Samples and have two more videos planned for it soon (data management and another granular). That said, if interested, check out the granular video - it's about a very specific niche of granular synthesis (pending video will be more general, have learned some things). Ordering it on Thursday! Ohhhhh man I'm excited after watching this. Gonna check out the Cycles vids of yours too so I can get used to the sequencer. Wow. What a benefit to have 64steps along with probability & nudge etc....and being able to set each track to different lengths and time signatures. Thanks for exploring this. At first I thought the decay/reverb still playing after swapping patterns was a glitch but now I really like using it. I need to have more of a play now using the delay instead as the decay/reverb gets lost if the same 'decay' track is activated when switching patterns.

Really appreciate these calm and deep Model Samples tutorials. Question At 12:40 you seem to fade in a pattern holding FUNC and turning track volume which I thought was how you pan a track? What am I missing?
TPsynth You’re welcome! - well, my hand is sort of blocking things, but I’m actually holding the [Track] button, which in this context is [Control All]. So I was fading in all the tracks simultaneously. It seems kind of like an odd place to put that feature, but it works well. This is really interesting. I actually pair my samples with a strymon volante it has a tape loop type Sound on sound looper that remind me of these techniques

mougabo Hey, you’re welcome! Yes, you do need to hook the M:S up to a computer by usb to update it. There are some steps, but it isn’t that bad. You need the Elektron Transfer software from the Elektron website. Then you need the actual update file (also from there). Then you plug up the M:S and need to make sure it is “seen” by the software - so you choose it as the midi in and midi out connections. This is all how you load samples too. Then you just drag and drop the update file (i think it has to be unzipped first), and follow the insteuctions. Sometimes the M:S has to reboot, etc. Lmk if it doesn’t work, I can hook it up and give more details. Thanks for checking out the video👍🏻!

Massimiliano Gallieri That’s a great question, and I really don’t know the answer. There might be some sort of standardized USB audio interface that allows Android (or iOS) to work, but I am not sure. I hook MIDI controllers to my phone via a camera adaptor, but not sure if that would be enough for this case. You could search about Android-to-Digitakt, and that might give you some ideas.

Massimiliano Gallieri For videos I typically record devices like the Model:Samples into a field recorder (Tascam DR-05, not super expensive) and then I import/synchronize that wav file to the video file in my video editing software. I synchronize by clapping (on camera) into the field recorder (before plugging in the synth). Another way to get sound out of the Model:Samples is via USB. To do this, go to ConfigMenu/DeviceConfig and make sure it is set to A+M (audio plus midi), then go to ConfigMenu/AudioConfig and temporarily change IntOut (internal output) to OFF (note: no sound comes out of the output jacks or headphones until you set it back to ON). Then, with the Model:Samples hooked to a computer by USB you can record into a DAW (like Ableton Live) or possibly some sort of wav recording software. (To sync to video with this method you can use a crisp percussion sample and align the sound to the pad light turning on). I hope this helps. Good luck! - Nim

hi there, sorry, this might be a stupid question. But, you had 8 audio tracks where you had samples..... still you had a complete drum kit sequenced. Where were those drums? i thought you only had 8 tracks, so to me that is a full drum kit...... meaning I thought you didnt have other tracks available anymore.......... so i´m confused about the fact that even when you had all your tracks busy with samples you still had the possibility to play a drum kit.
mougabo Well, the trick is to play (or program) one set of samples, drums in this case, and capture that in the delay effect. So, it’s using the delay as a looper. Then you can switch to a different memory slot and play a whole new set of samples - while the original beat is still coming from the delay. I hope this helps👍🏻.

@@leonidorlov7683 It is no problem at all. So, you have drawn the rhythm on paper? For one instrument or many? One good first step is to decide on a tempo that would work. If the rhythm is complex then you might need a fast(er) temp to capture all of the details of your rhythm. It is like a digital picture, hi-rez vs. lo-rez. As an example: I can use a tempo of 60 bpm and put a kickdrum on steps 1, 5, 9, and 13 of a 16 step pattern. OR i could use a tempo of 120 bpm and put a kickdrum on steps 1, 9, 17, and 25 of a 32 step pattern. They will sound the same, but the first way is lo-rez and the second way is hi-rez (i can place beats in between the kicks with more control in this case). Let me know if this helps👍🏻.
