  • My review on the Model: Samples from Elektron!
I've never had an Election device before so I was a bit on the fence about this one to be honest. Now I've had a couple of weeks with it and I'm ready to share some of my thoughts on it!
The video became pretty long so here are some different pointers:
Overview of the unit - What is it? 01:50
    Pros: 05:44
    Cons: 10:52
    Conclusion: 15:21
I love the sequencer of the Model: Samples and how deep, yet easy to understand the step sequencer it. Even me, a lover of unquantized drums am using the step sequencer more than the live playing functions!
Feel free to follow me on instagram! If I loose the bet I have to go on a fast for three days!

Yo! It can be powered with a battery! The side panel has a lid that you can put a 5v 1a 5.5mmX2.1mm barrel jack male plug to which I connect a power bank. Cuckoo has a few videos in his IG of his traveling setup. Elektron will release their official power bank but my ebay $5 cable and old powerbank work just fine. I agree on the pads sucking ass thou...

Looking forward to a Akai Force deep dive! I'm coming from a Digitakt workflow and am completely at sea on the Force. I was poo pooing the Samples, till I watched Stimming perform live with it along with an Octratrack and the Arturia MicroFreak. It was an amazing show and a complete eye opener for me.
Thanks for your videos, love what you do.

Digitakt is really great, and next to the Digitone, is my favourite device I’ve used so far. You don’t have timestretch, but besides that you get a great-sounding unit that’s really easy to work with. Compared to the older/bigger units, it’s really intuitive. I’d really recommend looking into it, especially since your work is so sample-oriented. The buttons are also pretty tactile/klick-klacky.

Biggest con for me is that the click is routed to the mains only. The Drumbrute routes the click to the phones when the phones are plugged in. That seems essential. Am I missing something?

I agree about the lack of USB power, it's crazy that they didn't just go with that. Also agree with the color. Regarding it being a sample player and not a sampler, they are clearly targeted towards people that prefer to approach samples as sounds similar to subtractive synthesis and drums, not full phrases, hip hop kind of sampling. This one's for the electronic music producers that want the happy accidents that come with the Elektron sequencer workflow.

also, I think its weird to have an entry level device that can control external synths but doesn't have an audio input. which means I'd have to bust out the mixer in order to run my bsii next to it?

It is really awesome what you can do with that elektron machines. Sure it ain't easy to wrap your head around this things, but it is well worth the effort. I own the digitone and its sequencer was a game changer for me. The digitone on it's own is a very very good groovebox with a unique sound. But the fact the to can sequence other gear/software with it, makes it really special. Nice review by the way 😉

    Yo Accurate!
At first I kind of dismissed this. Now it's becoming a bit more interesting. I'm on the hunt for a hardware sample player... after hours of research and list-making... this still seems to be at the top of the list, especially price-wise. Ideally I would love to use it as a "every vintage drum machine in one box" thing... LinnDrum, 707, 505, 808, 909, etc (kick, snare, clap, chh, ohh, and whatever else) per kit.... and just be able to do a lot of what the Roland TR8s does, for less cost. Every drum machine's one-shots are out there on the net, and they've been in my collection for years. Might be cool to keep it simple like that... just syncing it up to say, a Novation SL MKIII, along with a desktop synth module or something. Fun and easy. And the tweakability is fast.
Pros: 1gb total storage, 64mb per project (11 minutes of mono sampling). Easy tweaking of stuff. 64 steps. The cons you listed suck, for sure... any luck with using a generic USB battery brick (like for phones)? Have you gotten used to the pad feel? Any other thoughts are appreciated. Thanks man!

This is a perfect device for synthpop / post punk / goth type band to be used for drums and synth bass in one simple to use unit with a sequencer capable of programming entire songs with changes. I have just ordered one for this purpose. My only wish is it had 5 outputs so FOH could mix kick / snare / cymbals / toms / and bass separately. But it'll work. Looking forward to seeing how this works for my purposes. Mainly need a kick ass sequencer with good samples with some tweakability.

Is it possible to use an external MIDI keyboard controller with pads, like Arturia MiniLab etc? This would overcome the weak step buttons and pads on the thing itself.
Also, I understand it is possible to load your own samples via the USB connection. Tried that yet, and how complicated is it?

    • @callum6224
      @callum6224 4 года назад +3

Yes, it also makes programming melodies and notes into the step sequencer a lot easier, whether that’s programming it in the x0x style 16 step sequencer, if you just hold down the note on the external midi keyboard and press whatever step of the 1-16 on the model: samples it will then play that note, so you don’t have to use the encoder/knob to choose the note. You can also play notes chromatically which gives you 16 semitones to play and record live, then quantize it if you want and the quantize menu allows for a lot of options.
Putting samples on it is really simple, literally just download the Elektron Transfer software and you just drop in the samples you want. If you drop in a folder with lots of different named folders with different samples in them it will keep the folders exactly the same in the menu, and if you push the the main orange knob and hold it down for a few seconds when you choose a sample, it’ll load that sample and the next 5 samples into the rest of the pads which is probably the one specific thing to keep in mind when thinking about how to organize samples when you drag and drop them into the model samples.
Also it’s got class compliant USB, which means it also works with iOS devices, and you can send midi to and from it, and head the audio thats playing on the iOS device over USB, so you can sequence synths or play along with samples that way. Also works with windows and Mac in the same way, as an audio interface, so you can easily record tracks off of it over USB or easily use it with a DAW. It’s pretty nice, I like mine but I do wish I had a Digitakt or an Octatrack now, but the model samples is perfect for what I wanted it for, which is for live shows, so I can play samples from songs that had tracks I could recreate with the synths or other hardware I own, and is very easy to use, I feel like within 5 minutes of using it I knew 80% of the features, then it took me like an hour to go through the manual and learn the rest which I had missed some important stuff from, like ‘sample locking’, or using more than one sample in a track, and a lot of ‘shortcuts’ or just cool tricks and quality of life stuff

Elecktron have lately been producing much easier products for the beginner to average user. Their pedigree is for real professional production and skilled electronic live musicians. So for those who this product is aimed at will definitely do the job and is a great product. So the DIgi series and this product is great for the beginners/average users and will produce excellent music for you without having to back to school - hopefully :)

Great video, like you, I felt confused as to what this product was for... I had the Digitakt and it was amazing, however its a peculiar work flow and a steep learning curve, its not as intuitive as the Maschine work flow, or even MPC Live... especially for non quantised drumming (its primarily a sequencer).....and limited sonically (but very high quality), but has fun features like conditional triggering.... I felt Digitakt, like the SP404 (when used for beat making not fx) requires commitment and focus to get the most out of it.....its not a dip in and dip out thing or pick up and play device, like Maschine, so I returned it..but if I started again, wanted to go DAWLESS and simplify, would defo consider just getting the Digitakt again.

I've been using the Digitone recently and tbh it doesn't feel menu divey at all. it might seem that way to someone that hasn't used it, but working on the encoders and flipping page and forth between the page buttons under them is so fast. it doesn't take long to remember where everything is. I think it might even been faster to work with than if they had extrapolated the pages into knob per function. which would be 120 knobs to cover what's under the 15 pages of parameters lol. I think electrons supposed reputation for being unintuitive is due to how complex the Octatrack is, and to some extent the silver boxes.
with that out of the way, I got a boss dr202 to be a fast dirty fun drum machine, I think the model samples would be that much much better than this old boss

I have a Model:Samples and mostly love it except for a few things... My main gripe is that it seems to put all 6 of the samples on separate midi channels, am i wrong? That makes it quite a pain in the ass to connect it to midi pads like an Octapad, SPD-s, etc, and play it live by hitting the pads with drumsticks, like just about any other company who makes midi instruments let you do easily! Why the hell did they do that? it only lets me trigger them chromatically. I don't need 6 different pitched snares. If there is a way to set them all on the same channel? i didn't find anything about that. Another gripe is that most people are going to want to make a complete song using more than just 1 4-bar pattern, and keep all the beats using the exact same samples in place! It can be very time consuming and frustrating to locate the same samples, i have to first make a note of what folder, and especially what date i imported those samples, that can take a while, what a pain. I like a lot of Elektron's samples, but i prefer Native Instruments samples from Maschine much better, a lot of Elektrons snares sound real thin and quiet, and they sound great going through the Model: Samples filters. Also very cool to import old analog drum machine kits into it and edit them!

Like to see if anyone has partnered this Elektron Model Samples with another groove production device, jamming on the Samples when dawless and maybe sharing samples from an Akai MPC, NI Maschine, Roland Groovebox, Novation Circuit, PreSonus Atom, Akai Fire, Ableton Push, Novation Launchpad, Arturia Drumbrute, etc. Like someone might do if they owned a MPC X and MPC Live, one for the studio and one for portability. It could be cool.

  • @bigkingsha

The best sampler Elektron has made to date is the OCTATRACK - Hands down it is the quintessential sample and beat mangler, unlike Maschine, unlike the SP-404, unlike the OP-1, and unlike the MPC. The workflow is insanely different and forces you to think of music creation in a more mathematical and abstract way. It is in another fucking dimension. PERIOD DOT.

great vid....speaking about "who it is for": I came after the opposite conclusion after 2 years. I am not a sample based guy, as i need a beat machine that can sequence 1-2 synth, as my main sounds come from my guitar: so i will replace my digitakt with this one :) I think if someone really needs a beat machine and that really powerful sequencer, then the model samples is hard to beat (selling around 300 nowadays and haveing the sample lock with its new firmware)
would love to have a model: synth as well!
cheers and keep up your great work.

@Reed Austin yes, it is really great that you get elektron instruments at this price point...I have the samples for a week or so and I don't regret switching my digitakt for that. I was curious about the cycles too, but opted for the samples instead.

    • @ruz8099
      @ruz8099 4 года назад

@Reed Austin well it depends. I am actually a guitarist playing with a looper. Then I got the volca beat bc the beats on my rc300 looper are crap/not editable. From the beats i went to buying the keys, bass and even FM.....suddenly I had to sequence 3 - 4 synths and play the guitar so i looked around for sequencer and decided to go for the digitakt. Then I realized that I cannot play so many instruments live hahahahaha....at the end the digitakt is just too much for me. the sample does the job of creating great sounding beats plus the ad hoc playablity and knob per function. And I kept the volca keys that is sequenced by the samples.
So the digitakt is something that is great if you spend some time with to carefully plan your tracks (though no songmode) and program all sequences.
It killed my creativity. The samples is just an awesome samplebased groovebox plus that insane elektron sequencer.
with the keys bringing that analog vibe...the rest is taken care of my guitar and efx pedals.

It is a sampler. It's just based on audio files rather than analog input. That doesn't make it any less of a sampler. The only reason people associate samplers with analog input is due to the era in which they came into being, but the concept is the same regardless of how you get the audio into it.

If you're not adverse to using your audio interface to sample vinyl, then perhaps not such a big deal that it doesn't sample directly.

"tracks can have independant lengths" according to Elektron - so polymetric rhythms are possible

Thanks for this review, it is super helpful. I did try one out, and found that the pads missed 1/8th notes even at very low bpm. It was unusable for finger drumming. Also, the Digitak pads are even less responsive than the model: samples, and are not velocity sensitive iirc.

Right. I’ve actually considered making a follow up video on this one. I never use it. It doesn’t offer anything unique, the limitations doesn’t inspire creativity and I’m not even a fan of the hardware itself. Electrons worst product by far :p
