  • The Playstation has been synonymous with gaming for decades, but despite all of their efforts, Sony was never able to make their handheld systems successful. What exactly happened the PSP to falter and the Vita to crater? Was there anything Sony could've done to turn their fortunes around?

    For a consumer's point of view, 80 million PSP units sold is not a failure. But for a company that wants profit, it is. Not to mention, piracy was rampant during the PSP days, software sales slumped. In the country where I live, the co-workers who played PSPs at the smoking area got their games via pirating them. They'd usually go to a place called "Ruins" which had a store that injected pirated copies of games to PSPs with exploited firmware.
    That's why the PS Vita had overly expensive memory cards, in the name of preventing piracy.
    When even a stingy company like Nintendo had the common sense to use SD or Micro SD cards, you know Sony's screwed up.

    In my opinion, you don't have to be number 1 to be considered a success. The psp may not have beaten the ds in terms of sales, but it got a huge amount of support and was really ahead of its time. Overall it still sold really well. The vita, unfortunately, is a failure in my eyes due to its lack of developer support and overpriced memory cards

    Rip psp/vita. I have to say I loved the psp and I think the only 2 reasons were emulation and monster hunter. I got a vita in the 1st year it came out but I think I only played 2 oar 3 games on it. The hardware is really nice do, everytime I hold it I get the itch to play on it. But than I remember there is not much to play on it.

  • @morsecode980
    @morsecode980 6 месяцев назад +1

    The Vita failed for the following reasons:
    • Both the console and the proprietary memory cards were too damn expensive, on top of its launch lineup consisting of AAA games made with AAA costs. The cost to buy the Vita, a decent memory card, and a game or two were on par with that of a home console, which many people thought wasn’t worth the money. This was the first big turnoff.
    • Despite initially successful sales, the rapid decline that followed made Sony anxious. Thus, it was barely ever advertised. Plus I think not just calling it “PSP2” hurt its marketability.
    • Many games were either mid or straight garbage, and forced you to use all its gimmicks like the stupid rear touchpad way too much.

    Sucks because Sony's focusing so heavily on cloud gaming and sure, that may pan out in SOME markets, but it's so niche and the latency is still atrocious, even on high-bandwidth connections. The remote-play feature on the Vita was terrible because you only could utilize 2.4GHz wireless with the Vita or 4G LTE, neither of which are anywhere close to the latency of 5GHz WiFi, obviously.
    Again, though, even with 5GHz WiFi and a great internet connection with low-latency, cloud streaming games really still sucks. The latency is still really bad and is very prone to stuttering/lag and just all around a very unresponsive experience because of how bad internet infrastructure and the technology is in most places.
    Sony's prime time to make a handheld would be now, but instead they chose to go the streaming route with the dumb PlayStation Portal which is once again, go the way of the PlayStation TV. I want to feel bad for them, but they keep thinking these ideas they're bringing are new when they're the same failed, niche ideas that keep making their hardware fail. If they'd just release a handheld console that had native games, MicroSD support, a simple HDMI connector, USB-C with a full PS console control scheme and good hardware to back it up - they'd be very successful, since most PlayStation games are still very desirable and they still have a lot of good exclusives they can use to sell it and it could do very well.
    I always like Nintendo's handhelds, they were great, but Sony's library was always more "mature" (until the Switch) so honestly, I think the PSP/Vita had better games than the NDS/3DS.

    • @miguelangelhernandezsolis7849
      @miguelangelhernandezsolis7849 5 месяцев назад +1

      That would've been imposible Pokémon was a "happy accident "
      Nintendo had an old system that was selling well
      A guy had the idea of bugs crawling for the link cable
      The guy was so obsessed with bugs that his friends called the professor bug for that he wasn't giving up in the proyect
      Miyamoto sees potential in the proyect
      And nintendo help the studio with support of ape (now creatures inc) (the creators of mother/earthbound)
      And after years of hard work the game finally got in the market and .... Nobody bought
      It seems that all the things that were say in nintendo were truth and the proyect was destin to fail
      But the programers hidden a little secret in the game (mew)
      They were thinking of reveling it later
      But all the bugs they let in the game permit to access mew
      And boom all the kids hear the rumor and now Pokémon is a big hit
      And because all of that they decide to create a company only for Pokémon
      And when they planned to realize the game in America a lot of people tell the Pokémon company to chance the desing but nintendo is too stubborn to listen
      If any of that changes Pokémon wouldn't have exist

    I feel the real problem with these portable consoles is that you have to buy separate games at a pretty high price point, which many of these gamers already own a home console, it's not hard to see how the appeal can disappear quickly.
    Then I look at something like the Steam Deck, which is playing the full-blown PC version of the game, that you only have to buy once, play on PC or Deck, you've got long term backwards compatibility, the platform is a lot more open that you can use it as a full-blown computer, run emulators on it and lots more, it's not hard to see how appealing that can be.
    Even though the Deck isn't a threat to Nintendo yet, Valve is putting the foundations that it could become a threat to them with the Deck 2 or 3, which is, ease of use, low price and far more open than what consoles normally are.
    Being that both Microsoft and Sony release their games on PC and that Switch is easy to emulate, you are getting the best of all worlds when it comes to games compatibility, which is remarkable that it would be the PC that has the best choice of all platforms when it comes to games, but that shows how successful PC gaming is that it's becoming hard to ignore, apart from Nintendo, but Nintendo is a very stubborn company that would prefer to bury the company then release on other platform, but on the plus side, Nintendo platforms are some of the easier ones to emulate, so who cares lol.
    Where Sony really failed is the dedicated support from the companies and game studios, most studios don't want to make two different ports of games for PC/consoles and then for portable devices, Nintendo doesn't have that problem with the Switch because it's a home and portable device all in one, same games for the two, the Steam Deck is playing the same trick, using the same games on the PC but in portable form, but the Steam Deck has the advantage of a far far bigger games library going back decades, plus way more games than any console will ever get, that makes it far more appealing for gamers and software developers, because there is little to nothing they need to do to support the Deck, as long as the game is on PC, but the Deck does allow developers to fine tune their games to take advantage of the Deck if they want too.

    PSP was a huge success though, sure DS has sold more BUT PSP has still about the same as PS3 or x360!! Then there was a big regional division between PSP and DS, look at the sales charts of PSP in continental Europe (Europe excluding the UK and Ireland) They were selling 10 times more PSPs than DS in Europe, hardly anyone had DS but every kid had PSP since Nintendo couldn't care less for non-english markets whereas Sony invested a lot into localizing their games and systems in all the major languages...
