Hi everyone! I know there’s been a lot of crazy PlayStation news going on these past few days, and we’ll definitely discuss everything this Friday but for now I finally have another documentary for you all. Hope you enjoy it! I still have my launch PSP-1000 and doing this video has really made me want to start collecting more for it, so dead serious question what are some of your favorite games and what should I try and pick up? And thank you all so much for the support recently. You guys are the wind beneath my wings.
The Go was especially ahead of its time. I remember when I saw a friend with it back when they newly released, I was disgusted at the idea of being digital and not having a physical game cartridge. Now it’s a go-to preference.
Same with the vita, it’s unfortunate that they just gave up on it so easily! Seeing uncharted and killzone on a handheld with near ps3 quality was amazing!
This device was capable of wifi, internet browsing, taking pictures, gps, running a boatload of custom homebrew software (before anyone knew what "apps" were), playing music, watching both legit and pirated movies, and even being a TV remote. It had amazing graphics and a massive screen for the time. And it cost about half of what the original iPhone cost three years before it came out. It's so sad that Sony's locked down stock software never fully allowed people to unlock its full potential.
well, we also have to say that it did most of these things... badly :( ok, PS Vita was even worse (compared to other devices of that era)...i mean, in 2011 there was iPhone 4s and -more importantly- Samsung Galaxy S2 available in the world market; S2 was already decent in "3D gaming" (for the 2011 standard) and did everything else (GPS, web browsing, photos etc) much much better than PS Vita*, making the existance of the second Playstation Portable completely useless (smartphone gaming started in those years); PSP was like PS Vita in terms of non-gaming-features (quantity, not quality), but it was just lucky that smartphones were still unripe/premature in 2004-2008 *fun fact: Vita in italian means LIFE. it's funny to rename that way a console that was early considered dead :(
I wanted to get a PSP (cause of KH: BBB) But my mom was like, "Why? You have a game machine! Why do you wanna waste money for something you already have?"
Same boat as yours! Never had the chance to have a gaming console at home as my parents never allowed it but they gave me a PSP as a gift for my hard work in my test when I was 12.
This made me in tears. PSP is really the Walkman of 21st century. I remember the time I had my PSP and it was ethereal. It's been years and I still have my PSP working. For me it will be the best portable console ever. You can do everything on your PSP. Listen to music, watch movies, play games, Internet browsing, photo gallery etc. Too bad PS Vita was underwhelming. I do have PS vita but I'm still playing my PSP
Less things to push & move on a controller the better. Never liked controllers after the 16 bit era ended. In the arcades, everything was straight, joystick in the middle, 3 buttons to the right of it, or similiar layouts like that, now you got 2 sticks, buttons here, there, on top, underneath, to the side, wTF!
I actually got my PSP for free on release due to a contest held by the then official Playstation magazine in my country lmao. I had to run around this avenue in my city looking for 5 hidden magazine journalists and collecting their signatures. The first five people to find them all would win the console, and I was the fifth. I was so happy! In retrospect it's remarkable how powerful the PSP was for its time. Those were the times man.. I had so much fun with it.
PSP, my first portable gaming platform I've ever owned (I was never a Gameboy fan). My nostalgia PSP games are Persuit Force, Daxter, Midnight Club 3, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Winning Eleven, and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. Such a great system, loved it.
Me too I recently got one and i love it I play that thing so often it rivals my other stuff already I payed 115€ for just 1 game to play physical on psp I realy wish umd would be for vita as well tough
I've heard a lot of people say PSP was failure. It's 10th best selling console. Sold almost as much as xbox 360. Great system. Still love collecting games for it.
Argonxx12 1 I hacked my first PSP in 2007. So clearly not in the latter stages of its life. Piracy was rampant by 2008, and most people I knew that had PSPs had stopped buying games by 2008 and had hacked PSPs running OE and shortly after, M33 firmwares. Hell, I knew people that hadnt had a portable since the Game Boy and they bought it because it was that simple to hack them and get free games. That's where half the units sold came from in my opinion. People buying to hack and get free games.
@Rafeski i hope they bring them back when the ps5 comes out, but honestly the psp > DS in games and quality, if they still made games for it, the DS and 3DS wouldn't sell as well.

Lucky you my younger stupid ass destroyed 2 of them and was unlucky enough to get a bricked one for his birthday (fuckin factory bricked psp turned my usual happy birthday to a sad day)
Funk Shiz lmao damn thats kinda what happened to my bro. He later got into percs and now is on H. It all started w the psp tho.. haha so I cant b to mad at him since he’s struggling w all that
Psp was life, going clothes shopping with mom instead of being bored I was hack and slashing demons on God of war chains of olyumpus and play the crap out of weeks svr 2006
Lol, even the npc's like Eric Bischoff and Teddy Long played poker lol. I loved Creating Crappy Characters with limited layers, it gave me a Wiseman feeling
When I was a kid, I did the same thing with a Soul Calibur game. I was confused and knew nothing about it. I was so mad that day when I realized it had to be put in WITH the case -_-
It honestly amazes me how Sony was originally meant to be working with Nintendo, but Sony instead became it's own service. And let's be grateful that Nintendo backed out otherwise, PlayStation wouldn't be what it is today.
WOW, MEMORIES!!! I remember getting the PSP but not having enough to buy a game so I got the movie “Christmas With The Kranks” and watched that on my PSP over and over haha
I can't believe this is being billed as the little handheld that could. It blew me away with console quality and mobile tech when it was new. And all my co workers had one.
@knickerbocker Things can obviously co-exist. Yea, Iphone exists, but people are still buying PSPs, and other older consoles, and talking about them in 2019 going into 2020. Sure, everything can't be in the spotlight forever, or on TV, but people will be sure to keep a community going for older media and tech. Also, the last PSP game released was in 2016. I wouldn't call over 10 years, "dying quick."
Bollocks not a single mobile phone game can beat PS Vita games there isnt anything like Killzone Mercenary for phones. And white physical buttons they cant even compete.
They should have removed the rear touchpad and cameras and added second shoulder buttons. Very few games made use of the rear touchpad and the camera quality was garbage, there would be so much more potential to port PS2 games to it if it had the extra shoulder buttons and Remote Play would be much better.
@@fallonwomack5777 not true. Its still selling mad units in japan. It failed in the us so they jumped ship and pivoted so they wouldnt lose more money. Limited run has some great offerings for vita however
@@jak3w I wouldn't say it sell well in Japan now though. With the Switch came around and pretty much eat up its sales. And Japanese hardware sale trackers has stopped tracking Vita sales at this point. I would say it's the end of the PS Vita in Japan as well. IIRC the Vita sold around 5-6 million there. So I'm not surprised if overall it sold around 10 million.
i remember my wife bringing me to the mall and was surprised when we went to this shop selling psp and she asked what color and games for psp you want. psp was my first ever console and i still kept it for almost 12 years
I still think it's impressive that psp managed to play ps1 games in less than 10 years , like can you imagine portable device playing ps4 games in less than 10 years nowadays? this is really amazing!
@@fettibomba4504 i would say more like PlayStation 1.5 when it comes to it's power , because the games released on both psp/ps2 were little bit inferior visually and performamce wise on the psp
It is now 2024, almost 20 years after the launch of PSP. I am still playing mine at home. I can confirm it is one of the most successful handheld console. Nearly nothing can replace the vibe of PSP. The handheld PS2 gaming experience really connected me and my friends during our high school age.
I still remember when I played online for the last time using PSN, one day everything was working and tomorrow everything was gone and couldn't connect to their servers anymore, it was a sad day to me...
You should get a vita before the prices rise. I've had mine for 3 years and never regretted it once. Modding it turns it into a beast. You get the entire Vita, PSP, PS1, and partial PS2 library. As well as the machine being a monster for retro emulation like SNES/NES, GBA, Sega Genesis, Master System, N64 etc. Etc. I Never leave the house without it
@@pentexsucks43 I actually contradicted myself and bought one from amazon and a few brand new sealed games from ebay. It cost me an arm and a leg. I regret not buying it 10 years ago. Now i'm waiting for it to be shipped in time for my birthday.
This was an AMAZING documentary on, what I consider, a highly underrated and under appreciated portable console. Thank you so much for creating this documentary, and for sharing it on RUclips for everyone to enjoy, sir. God bless you, Mystic!
I remember back in 2005/06 when I was a kid going through some serious mental health issues. I asked my dad to buy me a PSP, and I loved it. The days of discovering CFW and emulators was truly an exciting experience, the years of finding PSOne eboots, being able to play SNES games etc. Those were the days, I’ve ‘retired’ from using my PSP now.
I remember the psp and the “Sony style” store. All the most advanced and newest tech available in one store. Robotic dogs, pocket PCs and super high definition TVs. Sony used to be super creative with their technology.
@@BlazeBlueY3 if you actually want a psp cheap go on Facebook marketplace they sell it for around 25-55 £ with games and charger, got one 35£ with 10 games: wipeout pure, jackass, pes 5, SpongeBob Truth or square, etc.
I absolutely loved my PSP. I got the Daxter bundle when it first came out. I was on a road trip at the time and stopped at the nearest best buy to pay for it with the money I had saved, knowing it was upcoming. Made the rest of the trip fly by! I have a Vita but got it late in it's life cycle. I would like to see a new "PSP" with powerful hardware to run PS4 quality games. I like my vita but it wasn't what the market wanted it to be, I feel. Love the video!
Spongebob: the yellow Avenger, Indiana Jones and the staff of kings, and so much more, I have a full box of PSP games.........I still have a PS VITA and PSP
I saved up and got the PSP Star Wars pack through layaway and logged thousands of hours of online play on Renegade Squadron. Seeing Chewy hold up the exact same model I grew up playing and loving really hits me with a wave of nostalgia. I’ve since purchased a PS Vita which is filled to the brim with mods that keeps me entertained for hours but it will never replace the excitement I felt playing PSP slim all those many years ago. Great documentary sir
I remember throwing a penny into a pond for a wish which was for a PSP. A few days later, my mom brought a PSP home with her, and I was surprised. 10 years ago was when I had it, now I reunite with the PSP 10 years later
@@abhirajsah6308 Sony devices have and will probably remain to be the most reliable devices technology has seen. Anything Japanese , you can be sure it is great quality and durable.
@@hassan123456killa true man when i was 10 or 11 ( i don' t remember correctly ) i got a ps2 which is currently in a great condition , though its memory card got corrupted but the device is working as smoothly as it was working 13 years ago
The first time a portable was on par with the current consoles, it was supported from the 6th to the 7th gen, making it quite unique. I still remember being amazed it had the exact same games we were playing on consoles and PCs, Tomb Raider Legend, Grand Theft Auto LCS, many exclusives that followed. To me this is the best portable, which still has hundreds of exclusives.
That's the problem though. Nobody expected that something like the iPhone would succeed and it was generally considered a fad when Apple announced it. Even if Sony had thought of it the people in charge their would have shot it down as a stupid idea
@Nathan Chang If Sony took the PSP and made it a phone by adding a SIM card slot and support before Apple ever made a phone. Then iPhone may not exist.
@@argonauts56au1kera6 yeah, I mean I loved apple from 2007-2012 they were super cool and innovative both in terms of quality and design, but after 2015 it seems they really are boring and reuse designs and makes everything way more expensive
I agree. The usability, clean look of the XMB and the screen quality of the PSP was so far ahead of the mobile competition at the time. The smartphones back then were clunky Windows Mobile phones that looked archaic next to a PSP.
Wow. What a shitty nanny. I had a GBA as a kid and my cousin stole it. I never forgave him to this day. When I got my PSP, I held onto that shit with a tight fist.
umd would have had a longer run if they released there stand alone player. being locked to the psp and didn't even have tv out until the 2000 version came out hurt that as a movie format. i guess there was even a prototype umd burner that also never saw the light. of course at that point flash storage was drooping in price.
@@thanos2399 yeah but mostly the Vita killed itself with games being bad ports or copies of existing PS3 games and here Is an example: Ridge Racer PSP, 2004: it's great, 60FPS at all time, graphics look really nice, menu songs and Menus in general are nice to look at, it's the perfect PSP launch title (also Ridge Racer 2 since it's the exact same game with a few more tracks and Cars and songs) Ridge Racer PS Vita, 2011: not great, graphics look downgraded from Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3, and there was so Little content locked behind DLCs. This Is not EA, its Namco, and for some reason they renamed some Cars (Soldat Raggio now known as Soldat Rauna) for some reason, and again, very Little content Also the PSP had almost perfect ports of PS2 games, Colin McRae Rally 2005, Midnight Club 3, ecc. Yeah some games might not run at a consistent 30/60FPS (especially CMR2005 and MC3 I mentioned) but they were still playable and fun to look at, they were basically PS2 games on the go, Nintendo took more than 10 years (literally) to make a portable device play SNES games. The PSP did It right at the start of it's Life And the Vita could have done the same, if It wasn't killed by low support, terrible games and nobody caring
I am from Xbox but the PSP was my first console, I have a great love for it and it is undoubtedly one of the best consoles in history, long live the PSP!
I loved my PSP so much! I had the first gen model in white, dropped and smashed the screen :( A years worth of Xmas and Bday money saved up meant I could buy another one and I still have it. Tekken, Burnout, Tony Hawk and Moto GP were my favourite games.
i first got my PSP when my mom bought me one in 2008, and i loved it from the first moment i turned it on. It was a very slept on handheld, and superior to the Nintendo DS in every way. miss the good ole days of playing it, and the online was fun as well. great video.
I bought a PSP back in 2005 for my daily train commutes, and I really loved it. I was blown away by the fact that you could play home-console-style games like Ridge Racer or Liberty City Stories while sitting in the train, and even watch fully fledged movies. The device itself felt premium and looked beautiful. Modern smartphones are great for watching YT videos or listening to music, but playing games is a pain on them and I miss the ease of just putting a UMD into the PSP to watch a movie.
wall mob my point was back in that time is was hard to believe that a device that can play games, listen to music, watch videos and tv shows and browse the web would have software that can exceed software as far as memory capacity and that being a console that had better hardware than the PS2 and probably OG Xbox. The only fault with Nintendo and even know a days they still don’t know how big of impact online gaming is like with the Switch without proper voice chat and dedicated servers like OG Xbox and PS2 had back in the day. They just don’t know their competition at all.

The PSP was THE best portable device for me. So many great memories with it. Not even just the device itself, but it brings me back to just the general time, and where I was. So pleasant MF
I got my psp 12 years ago, and its still working. Who would have thought I would still have it in my college years, a game console I got from my 8th birthday, and still have it and play with it in my 20s. Once a psp gamer, always a psp gamer
They killed the portable line when they released the Go. - More expensive - Couldn't use your SD Card - Couldn't use your UMD's - AND IT STILL DIDN'T HAVE A 2ND ANALOG STICK
Why would they put the second analog stick if there wasnt one on the previous models? PSP is PSP, it has to have same buttons because of game compatibility. If they put that second analog on the GO and released games that would take advantages of it, older PSP models wouldn't be compatible with those games. Imagine having to buy a new PSP again just to play a new game that isn't supported because your PSP doesn't have a second analog! All PSP's must be the same (same gameplay buttons/sticks)
@@Petar321_GTExactly. It would have been a new system at that point just like the Vita eventually was. Backwards compatibility would still work because you're adding hardware.
@@120DudeSome Thats a good point, but not what i meant. Games that would requiere a second analog wouldn't work on older PSP's. That would be a serious deal. As i said, all games must be compatible with all PSP models.
PSP as a console has a special place in my heart. Back when I was about to turn 11, I was thinking of purchasing a smartphone (since everyone had them) but then I saw a PSP and said to myself: "Oh my, I have to get this!" And so it was: I got PSP alongside NFS Most Wanted and I loved it a lot! Over time, I started saving money for PSP games and got games such as GTA Vice City Stories, Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer and Burnout Legends. Now it's in possession of my elder brother.
The best thing Playstation has ever dropped, it had the chance to capitalize on the handheld devices industry, the vita was supposed to be even great, still have memories of playing medal of honor, need for speed most wanted, resistance retribution, metal gear solid peace walker, spike, and twisted metal. I'm proud to call the psp my first ever handheld console and my favorite console in history.

Even i respect newer ones.
The PSP was such a huge part of my childhood! I must have got it in 06 or 07 . Man it was so exciting! I took it everywhere. I don't know how many hours i played on it but it must have been in the thousands. I remember waking up in the morning and playing Fifa 10 Career mode. KIds by MGMT playing in the menus. Man, those were the days... Miss those times. Then i got the pandora battery and i made that Magic memory stick. Now I could download every game for free on the internet. I see where the demise of this devise can be attributed to. For me it wasnt a failrue tho. Like i said, it was a huge part of my childhood. Very fond memories. Thank you sony!!!!!
My childhood PSP is still going strong (with the exception of the umd drive not working) and with cfw you get all the fun memories coming back, same with my DS lite. I had a vita, 2ds and a switch that I got rid of but those two I'm never letting go. Great documentary

People couldnt pirated Vita games for a very long time and Sony screwed it in the very early stages of its lifespan.
No point cause phones have taken over the handheld department since 2014 their getting handheld quality games plus batter hardware

They should've put more effort into the PS Vita
You mean marketing? The games and tech was there, just that soccer moms once again balked at the price compared to the cheap 3DS.
Clay3613 they had games for like a year then abandoned it
They should have removed the rear touchpad and cameras and added second shoulder buttons. Very few games made use of the rear touchpad and the camera quality was garbage, there would be so much more potential to port PS2 games to it if it had the extra shoulder buttons and Remote Play would be much better.

There was no "fall" of their first portable It was a big success.
Technically the "fall" of psp was when the ps vita released; the psp began to show its age and consumers quickly lost interest once vita came
It also failed to overcome the ds and gba
It fell when mobile gaming finally catched up. Around 2014.
Then the switch came and that was basically over for the vita aswell.
@@thanos2399 yeah but mostly the Vita killed itself with games being bad ports or copies of existing PS3 games and here Is an example:
Ridge Racer PSP, 2004: it's great, 60FPS at all time, graphics look really nice, menu songs and Menus in general are nice to look at, it's the perfect PSP launch title (also Ridge Racer 2 since it's the exact same game with a few more tracks and Cars and songs)
Ridge Racer PS Vita, 2011: not great, graphics look downgraded from Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3, and there was so Little content locked behind DLCs. This Is not EA, its Namco, and for some reason they renamed some Cars (Soldat Raggio now known as Soldat Rauna) for some reason, and again, very Little content
Also the PSP had almost perfect ports of PS2 games, Colin McRae Rally 2005, Midnight Club 3, ecc. Yeah some games might not run at a consistent 30/60FPS (especially CMR2005 and MC3 I mentioned) but they were still playable and fun to look at, they were basically PS2 games on the go, Nintendo took more than 10 years (literally) to make a portable device play SNES games. Modern smartphones are great for watching YT videos or listening to music, but playing games is a pain on them and I miss the ease of just putting a UMD into the PSP to watch a movie.
That’s crazy PSP UMDs have more memory than GameCube Discs
... And micros sd cards hold more data then both of them combined. What your point my guy
wall mob my point was back in that time is was hard to believe that a device that can play games, listen to music, watch videos and tv shows and browse the web would have software that can exceed software as far as memory capacity and that being a console that had better hardware than the PS2 and probably OG Xbox. The only fault with Nintendo and even know a days they still don’t know how big of impact online gaming is like with the Switch without proper voice chat and dedicated servers like OG Xbox and PS2 had back in the day. They killed the portable line when they released the Go.
- More expensive
- Couldn't use your SD Card
- Couldn't use your UMD's
- AND IT STILL DIDN'T HAVE A 2ND ANALOG STICK
