Famously Amorphous
The Travelers of the Multiverse unearthed arcana seems to have finally confirmed that a 5e spelljammer book is on the way and we’ve got a bunch of new interplanar races to play with. We first saw the plasmoids way back in 2nd edition as a monster, but now they’re getting the full playable race treatment giving 5e players their very first opportunity to play oozes! These big amoebas can be human-shaped, literal blobs, or anything in-between. But how does one play as a blob? Get your microscope and hide all the disinfectant as we go through everything you need to know

What about a plasmoid circle of spores druid? Reflavor the abilities as being a more parasitic member of your species, able to break down living flesh and even assume control of humanoids with your cellular copies.
Trevor, we REALLY like this idea.
I like it but it's particularly horrific
just slap someone with a long arm and they just start having a stroke@@SkullSplitter
For some reason I find it so cool to imagine the blob in human form wearing armor being backed into a corner, only to turn amorphous and slip through a crack, leaving the armour and weapons clattering to the floor.
So, I already made a plasmoid and was able to get a climb speed on it. I have to say, I LOVED it. I had so much fun using it and I can't wait to see how it turns out in the end. XD
Update on your plasmoid character
Whats the build??
For an upcoming campaign I’m playing a plasmoid Pugilist Barbarian multiclass. Tankiness of Zac from League of Legends combined with all the goodness of an unarmed grappler. I usually don’t play the strength based characters at my table, so I’m pretty excited to give this a shot. I will be working with my DM to help tune things if something seems out of hand as well. We both want to test out some of these races as well as homebrew stuff out there like the pugilist. Either way the advantage on all things grappling and being able to go unarmored at all times to take advantage of the amorphous property will be a lot of fun. I have a feeling that this will be a character that’s very MCU Groot-like, and I’m all for it.
Next up, get a magic item that casts goodberry 1x a week so you can reform when you die.
First idea that came to mind was to make Flubber from the movie. Eccentric small green ooze
The thing is, I’m really excited about this race, I mean lineage. 😅
Though I do think this is going to be a banned race.
Im making a plasmoid alchemist that is basically an experiment become sentient. And the psudopod works great flavored as a tail! Also i wouldnt say the squeeze through gaps as wide as an inch is too game breaking. An inch is quite large when it comes to buildings and i dont think it would be so common it would be broken.
Fun way to traverse a ship with speaking tubes, liquid pipes, or breaking into banks with vacuum tubes for delivering messages.
I'd love to play an unarmed echo knight that is basically a slime splitting via mitosis. One of us grapples the foe, the other punches them
My current plasmoid character is a bard, and their whole thing is they're a jester! They wear a mask and the rest of their body is dyed in such a manor to resemble colorful tights and they use their amorphousness to perform wacky tricks with crazy allusions and ambulations. Think courage the cowardly dog or warden from super jail
Beast barbarian blob: NOWHERE IS SAFE.
The spiky angry ooze is coming to get ya
I feel keeping darts as a last resort weapon could be really useful for plasmoids characters. Even though the rulebooks don't mention their width, I believe darts should pass through a 1" gap.
plasmoid necromancer that rides around on a skeleton
"I used to be an adventurer like you, till I stepped in slime up to my knee."
Small size Battlesmith/Cavalier. The Steel Defender is a skeleton and you ride inside the body and attack out of it. Not mechanically much different from riding on something, but is mildly more unsettling visually.
Cool stuff! You say that this is a lineage, but looking at the UA page, it says that this is a race, as are the other five options. In fact, only the Van Richten options seem to be lineages, so I don't understand where you're getting your definition of Race/Lineage from.
I will say that writing a plasmoid is quite fun. My dude got kidnapped by a wizard escaped with a bunch of wizardry stuff and found a human town to live in
I'm working on a Plasmoid Hexblade Warlock/Swashbuckler Rogue and taking the Mask of Many Faces invocation so I can cast Disguise Self every hour to maintain a more common appearance. Then for added fun, I could scare people by turning into a blob.
I feel like I want a plasmoid wildfire druid... I think I'll work on that.
That sounds very interesting! I’m intrigued at the thought of any plasmoid Druid when it comes to wildshape alone. Sounds like there can be some very cool descriptive liberties to be taken there!
Living gasoline
My character for the Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign I'm a part of is a Plasmoid Horizon Walker Ranger with the Sage Background basically my concept is Slime Girl Treasure Hunter who is the adopted daughter of a archeologist who accompanied him on his travels before becoming mentally mature enough and capable enough of becoming a treasure hunter on her own merits.
I’m making a plasmoid armorer that inhabits the armor to keep it’s shape. Idk about backstory yet though
human turned ooze in a horrible accident with the armor?
I'm thinking Way of Shadow Monk, slipping into a door cast silence or darkness then open the door and let everyone in, lmao no DM is gonna like that.
When this is out in an official book, I may make a glittery rainbow slime warlock.
As for the patron? Either hexblade, genie, or fathomless.
I have a plasmoid character based on an OC that was basicaly just me in a sleeping bag doing a voice. His name is terry the terror. He is Chaotic/hungry and his catchphrases include
"It aint easy being an amorphous terror"
"Here i go terrorizing again"
"GIVE ME YOUR BONES"
"Oh im sooo FuLL"
Plasmoid necromancer made out of magically animated blood.
NICE. What are you going to call them?
@@SkullSplitter Steve.
Plasmoid beast barbarian, Pretty much just venom but without a host
I made a plasmoid rogue named Sawse. They like to steal all the shiny objects and "is a normal human person being with a skin condition". They also talk in third person and have an intelligence of -2 but a +4 in charisma so they have a funny way of talking as a result
My new character is a small grapple ooze. an angry little flubber that launches itself at people. at lvl3 taking rune knight. seems odd sure, but flying through the air and turning large half way to the target? yes please.
I was blissfully unaware of this UA until today and now i am cursed with some many questions, at least it's not that much of a wait until the Spelljammer book where we can see how shape they take (i assume) ;)
But yeah i can see how you can easily abuse a Plasmoids Aberrant Mind Sorcerer tho. squeeze through a crack in the wall, use Psionic Sorcery feature to cast Summon Aberration, do not elaborate, leave back thru the crack in the wall (while they suffer a Beholderkin attack).
oh i just remember that is something they can already do with Revelation in Flesh, tho still that's level 1 and free vs level 14 and 1 SP cost.
What would happen if you absorb clear dye?
Hehehehehe goes from being grappled to choking the grappler...
Detective Mark Mallard. Private Investigator. Plasmoid. Rogue. This guy likes to use his unpredictable shape and actions to work within the law and bring people to justice ⚖️ .
We're playing a kingdom hearts inspired campaign and I'm playing a plasmoid monk descendant of Flubber. My dm invented an item that I attuned with that gives me a 60ft range on unarmed attacks as long as i don't move beforehand. And I have a custom subclass that I can use a ki point to double my stretchy range, making that into 120ft. Or at level 11 I can turn into a gelatinous cube. 😀
To be fair, this is basically playing as Kirby but with camouflage options. And bigger, because Kirby is only 8 inches tall.
A couple of questions. Can you use your pseudopod to make a set of makeshift handcuffs? How effective would it be? I know it can't hold or lift more than 10 pounds. But how does that apply to restraining? Can you give your pseudopod instructions to move and look more like a snake. Can you use your pseudopod as a makeshift trip line? How long does it take to break down 1 pound of nutrients? If I just ate a meal chances are I probably can't slip through a 1 inch hole. Can I goo myself into a lock and picket it? Or what I still require lock picking tools? Could I use the soul knife ability to create constructs for me to slip around in? I like the idea of spinning around in the shape of a top with construct blades along my outer edges. What is the reach maximum reach of my 4 appendages?
It should be noted, you can use "That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime" as an anime to see how you could play an intelligent slime.
I watched one of those recap videos on this and I never thought I would ever here about it again for the rest of my life.
I’m definitely build a hexblade t-1000
Plasmoid cat girl, yes I am a weeb. Also making them a warlock, specifically genie.
What’s their name?
For my dm's next game I'm planning on making a Plasmoid monk based on Android 21 from DBZ
I am building a Plasmoid Blade Pact Fiend Warlock focused on Fire, Necrotic, Poison and Acid.
That's right... I built Hexxus...
I built a plasmoid similar to Majin Buu from dragon ball - my dm hates my Monk ooze!
I want to make a plasmoid who can make itself look just like a human just all colored like my favorite color glowing neon green
as a short reference to how I'm thinking imagine any character and color them the ooze color hair and all and instead of individual strands of hair it's more like big spiky blobs and its mostly feature less body you can see a mouth and nose and what's suppose to be eyes but no detail especially in the eyes
also the mouth has what looks like teeth and a tongue and that thing in the back of your mouth
also I want it to fake having clothing imagine some dude in a trench coat like jacket that instead of the bottom ends just falling cause of gravity they kinda floats to the side same color as the character
edit you can make the psuedopod a tail based off the writing not specifying from where
Im trying to make a plasmoid swashbuckler rogue, hehehe it's gonna be weird but cool
Plasmoid mutant monk of the way of four elements, working for the Simic Combine on Ravnica. An elf scientist who made an experiment which went wrong. It would be awesome, am I right?
why do normal oozes use their pseudopod to attack but this playable one not?
When a race takes when there’s a hole there’s a goal to a whole new level 💀
I think a sponge bob type character would work perfectly for this race
I just made one as an NPC for a starjammer campaign I'm running for some friends. I've already healed someone using healing word with a pseudopod.
I’m playing a plasmoid rogue that is going to be taking the soul knife subclass at 3rd. Can’t wait to start hucking psychic daggers at people. Also, it makes me a psychic grey ooze! 😊
Man I really wonder how far you could take the "Shape self" thing.
Would be really cool if you could be imaginative and be rewarded for it
I saw a few interesting combinations:
Astral monk - popular choice
Beast Barbarian
Fathomless Warlock
Creation Bard
Divine Soul Sorcerer
Spores Druid
Alchemist/Armorer Artificer
Soul Knife Rogue
Rune Knight Fighter
No love for Wizard or Ranger yet, but I’m sure someone will think of something
I’m a plasmoid Impractical Weaponry Fighter in our campaign and I literally don’t have to carry any weapons with me. I finished off a bandit captain by tongue-tying two frogs together and using them as nunchucks! Don’t have to worry about leaving my weapons behind either because the world is my weapon
Time to find a way to exploit this like I always do
A better background would be the drasalite from StarFrontiers
I’m currently in the process of making a plasmoid gunslinger and we added a lot of modern guns but I could take all the suggestions and help I can get for this new character
I would probably make a beast barbarian plasmanoid
Imagine the Bite feature making you look like one of Stephen King's Langoliers! How about being able to hang from ceilings? A blob with a spiky tail or claws? It all works so well!
@@PBWilson1970 I was thinking something more around venom
Plasmoids are technically capable of the most single turn damage in all of dnd.
1. Build a character for grappling and movement speed. (540ft-24000ft per turn is current max based on various factors like available magic items/party comp.)
2. Spike growth at low level, prismatic wall at high level.
3. Grapple as many creatures as possible that are 2 sizes lower than you. (Plasmoids can technically grow infinite arms so this is only limited by max drag weight)
4. Use all movement to drag through spike growth (average of 5 magical piercing damage without any saves per 5 feet) or to drag into and out of prismatic wall (7 saving throws per 2 inches, one of which turns all subsequent saves into automatic fails, and average of 35 damage of various types per save.)
TLDR: grapple up to your carrying capacity and supersonic sandpaper hundreds of enemies with minimum damage in the hundreds per enemy at low levels, and tens of millions at high levels, all rules as written without any ambiguity.
College of Whispers Bard/Warlock multiclass with _mask of many faces_ along with the Whispers disguise abilities.
*They are the monster within.*
It's just a question of Hexblade for being able to summon a weapon and do damage burst to ambush lone victims, as well as the EldritchArmour invocation so you can don armour in an action, for impersonating guards perfectly.
Or going Great Old Ones to have fun with _Awakened Mind_ games and mind control, and also to give the rest of the Party the heads up as to who you're currently impersonating should you cross paths.
And in a conventional Party combat as long as there's some form of Telepathy in the Party to avoid friendly fire, you can sneak round and kill the enemies at the rear, maybe even get close to the squishies. And just cause mayhem because they've got to check each other constantly, or you get to take cheap shots at them.
For Dms wanting to buff a plasmoid player. I homebrew a trait where the plasmoid's body acts as a bag of holding where they can stuff items in themselves and spit it out when needed. If you think its too broke, you can set up encumbrance that halves their walking speed.
How much fine dexterity does a Plasmoid have? Could it pick a lock or disarm a trap? Would it matter what form it's in? Also how much control does it have over it's form? Can it be a chair? A boat? A backpack? Could it flatten itself out?
Played a ooze bard in a monster campaign based it on meatwad from ATHF it was the most fun character I have ever played so hype to bring this in 5e
TAKE THE MEAT BRIDGE< ITs RIGHT OVER HERE!
I plan to play a bounty hunter grappling slime who uses its bonus action pseudopod to manacle opponents.
I home brewed a Myconid race by taking the Hill Dwarf & swapping its armor & weapon features with Rapport Spores & Sunlight Sensitivity.
I can be slime buddy YAAAAAAAH!!!!
a fun idea i thought of, in the same vein as warlocks with pact weapon, is eldritch knight. You can cast mage armor and you can teleport your weapon to you, so you can always be ready for battle
I thought the psudopod was detachable when i read the description
This was a very informative guide and the presentation was well said. Keep up the good. 👍
I'm going to make an assassin plasmid that sneaks through cracks and keyholes to escape and infiltrate, and maybe suffocates the victim by crawling into their Airway
I was litterly thinking of a build like this
Time to build ditto in 5e
as a plamoid could you wear people?.. like enter inside them for up to and hour?
Thats an interesting question….not sure how we feel about it.
@@SkullSplitter Technically most esophagus are up to 1 inch wide in humans. So a Plasmoid rogue could use its ability to suffocate sleeping targets by entering their mouth and just chilling inside their lungs. As a move action. A DM might have them make a grapple check to stay inside while to person tries to cough them out, or ban it all together, but rules as written its very possible.
Considering any Sentient ooze would make this tactic even scarier and suddenly it becomes clear why most of them can't think. They would be utterly terrifying
Created a plasmoid rogue named bloop havent gotten to use them yet but i will tonight
I’m not a bad slime.
Just turn your hand into a key easy
I thought this was a stellaris race video I just saw Plasmoids
Plasmoid Soulknife here. I was made to be an assassin.
I can't wait to start my space faring flubber character.
We aren't a slime or ooze, this is clearly based on being an amoeba.
after a year, I'm saddened how little plasmoid content there is. Although I'm a forever DM, I have played a plasmoid in a one shot. It was fun, I went Monk Rogue no gear at all, and played into just a blue goo in a bucket most of the time. They had sneak through the roof, could break and enter anywhere, and unarmed combat was not an issue.
I definitely want to play a slightly Homebrew version of this
Basically they polluted plasmoid
They lose some abilities that a regular plasmoid have but in turn they gained a few extra
Like for instance they are immune to water and can even be healed by it but are very very vulnerable to anything that can try them out fire lightning xcetera
And of course being polluted they have a harder time slipping through cracks than regular slimes on top of the fact that they also smell absolutely terrible with a tar like substance that they're made out of
The makeup for this they have an acid spray and if they drop everything on them and flatten out into a disc if it can fly short distances using this acid spray as propulsion
But again this is only for short distances for as long as they can use their spray for
They also are likely unable to wield weapons made with any form of organic material because they are highly acidic to anyting made of flesh wood ect but have no effect against unorganic materials
Basically they give up some of they're amorphous capabilities for being able to do more damage and having slightly more mobility thanks to temporary flight
But again though it is scenario that could dry out a slime this guy is at his weakest such as if he's in the middle of a forest fire
He might be able to consume the carbon even though it's not fully organic but with all of his water being dried out from the fire he would die
For those who get the reference yes it is the smog monster from Godzilla versus monster also known as hedorah
I'm about to play a plasmoid wu jen mystic
it's nowhere as broken as flying at level 1. I would change that 60 feet of darkvision with an amount of blindsight and specify that the ooze is blind beyond that.
That would bar the linkage from any sort of long-range spellcasting, i.e., basically making the wizard and sorcerer lose half their tool kit, as well as nerfing any ranged fighter.
I'm going to ask my DM if I can swap out Darkvision to Natural Armor to kind of play on the idea that Plasmoid like a oozes has a malleable, adaptable, gelatinous, slime body that can allow it to survive attacks.
@@thegreatgamers9812 It would, if you were removing its normal sight as well. Blindsight is a trait basically all Ooze have as they don't have eyes. Plasmoids being special in having photoreceptors allowing "normal" vision is neat, but loosing their ancestral way of seeing for Darkvision is particularly strange. Having normal sight, and traditional blindsight is arguably better than having a slightly longer darkvision. You technically have disadvantage seeing anything within the dark anyway with darkvision as dim light still imposes disadvantage. And completely being unable to see anything past it. Basically every DM I've ever played with Ignores this rule. But I digress. Having Blindsight just straight up being able to ''see'' a target, regardless of the light level is better rules as written for fighting in the dark.
Greater saying they are blind beyond their blindsight is just how normal Oozes function, and I would argue Plasmoids have ''evolved'' past that limitation.
*lookst my ooze place that has a pit of ozzes that are meant to slip through cracks in the floor to attack players*
Me as a DM: Fffffuck
I honestly wish I was a plasmoid
i made a plasmoid ranger with swarm keeper subclass. and the swarm theme is more slime. picked faceless background to disguise as a peasant while in cities, and took the roleplaying opportunity to act really weird because their charisma is 6. that made for a funny introductory session as the rest of the party figured me out, and i trust it will make for more fun rp moments of acting chaotic chaotic
That would be awesome if the had blind sense instead
I have a symbiote character that resides within the gut of my main character, which aids in digestion in turn of the darkness and the warmth of the insides of their body, so I might be able to add them along with him into a campaign as a duo. Two truly exotic friends
Yo I'm a barbaric Plasmoid without armor so I'm going into the team8te armor to protect me and them 😂😂
I'm going to do a Plasmoid Inquisitive Rouge basically Slime Girl Treasure Hunter. Scratch that in the Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign I got invited to I'm doing a Plasmoid Horizon Walker Ranger basically same concept Slime Girl Treasure Hunter and I convinced my DM to let me swap Darkvision for Natural Armor the reason why I'm going with Natural Armor was because I want to play with the idea that Plasmoids like all oozes/slimes have a malleable, adaptable, gelatinous body plus I thought Natural Armor pairs up better with Amorphous.
Couple the 10' pole with your not-tenticle for some real carefulness and take a whip for a weapon so it can go through cracks after you.
Unarmored defense is better than armor so for martial be monk, barbarian, or rogue.
Is this the same as Gothic Lineages in the sense that you can start as another race and the transition later in the campaign?
No, it's a race. It isn't even referred to as a lineage in the UA
:) my friend is gonna not have a good time
i gotta assume right now the humanoid shape things is gonna be explained by conservation of mass but i think they should change it too
