Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, are a popular choice for a household pet. These small rodents are native to South America and are known for their friendly and social personalities. They are relatively low-maintenance pets, requiring a cage with bedding, food and water, and regular cleanings.
Guinea pigs are herbivores, and their diet should consist of hay, vegetables, and pellets. They are also active creatures and benefit from daily exercise and playtime outside of their cage. Guinea pigs have a lifespan of 4-8 years and can make excellent pets for both adults and children.

Hi can you do a pitsky part husky part pitbull or a beagel
Beagle
Please do the Pomeranian next
Can you do corgi?
Parrots
Fun fact: its illegal to own only one of them in Switerzland cause they get lonely.
So if you have two and one dies, you are required by law to get another?
That's amazing XD
@@midnitethedsixl4601 I feel even more so since they’d be depressed from losing a companion
@@midnitethedsixl4601 police turn up at your door with another one
Did you see that on the same short I seen it on?
Yep, it’s because they can die from loneliness.
I’ve heard that some Guinea Pigs can be quite sassy-
‘insert Guinea pig in a barbie car, large sunglasses and squeaking with their full sass’
Yeah I had one that had an adittude
yuh mine looks like she’s tryna be a model when she walks..it’s so sassy
I call on of my females sassy spaz bc she is super sassy lol
My first piggy was very sassy.i still loved her tho
I have a female guinea pig that is super sassy lol, she forgets about it when I bring treats 😂
I am a Guinea pig owner and let me tell you, they are NOT low maintenance! They take a lot of work if you want them, happy, healthy, social, and not depressed! So PLEASE if you are thinking of getting some, be ready to clean, feed, and play with them a lot!
Right?? I have to clean their habitat every day and god forbid I’m slightly late to feed them 😭
Haha fellow guinea pig owner and I was looking for this exact comment the moment he said they were "low maintenance"
My mother owned a lot of Guinea pigs in her time and when I wanted one she made me clean the whole house everyday so that when I take care of them I do it well
They are low maintenance
Plus cage maintenance, at least ours are very messy and their cage(s) need to be cleaned daily
"Low Maintenance" my piggies shat everywhere after like 8 hours of my sleep
😂😂😂 for real!!!
They NEED a cage mate, getting one guinea pig is animal abuse. They are social, please don’t ask people to ‘consider’ getting them a friend. They need a cage mate, ideally a littermate
Same with rabbits
And mice/rats
what if a Guinea Pig is extremely close to a rabbit?
@@alienhomicide they should not be caged together period. Rabbits are far more aggressive and can harm the guinea pig.
@@BLazeWigglytuff right sure, but there’s been rabbits who are deeply bonded to them since kits. i’ve never been a owner of a g - pig.
They are NOT low maintenance… it took me about an hour to clean their cage one time when they were feeling particularly messy. It also means you will either be washing fleece liners or constantly buying and changing paper bedding. Also lots of hay and veggies.
I have mine with a litter tray with wood shavings under hay which takes up a lot of the poo. Another litter tray in the corner with wood shavings where the water is that they pee in. The rest of the cage is fabric pads that I can pick up and shake off in the can. Maybe takes 20min to clean the whole thing
constantly?? do you mean everyday or??? cuz that’s completely unnecessary. you could spot clean 1-2 times a day for about 30 minutes each and then spend 2 hrs on the weekend doing a complete clean out which isn’t that hard. i dont really think they’re that high maintenance just cuz ppl choose for it to be. i will agree that they r expensive but once you buy/make decent fleece liners, it really isnt that expensive compared to a dog. unless your cage is massive and you have like 10 of them, they aren’t extremely high management lmfao
Worth it though 😂 gotta care for my little babies ❤
YESSS
@@sidedvegetables if you have a cage big enough for them then it should take a while to clean. Guinea pigs are one of those pets that everyone passes off lazy care as proper care.
They’re definitely not low maintenance, I have to clean their enclosure twice a day.. I spend about an hour cleaning up their poop and hay 😬 but it’s worth it ♥️♥️
They are a TON of work. I used to foster Guinea Pigs, they poop and pee indiscriminately, they need specific veggies daily to stay healthy and they need an enclosure that’s big enough for them to run around which takes a lot of work to keep clean. They are anything but low maintenance.
@@brandonsheets1883 exactlyyy

***I'm salty, over poopy owners
I know personally a poopy owner, I feel so bad for her guinea pigs
Yeah, I hate when people say any animal is low maintenance. Just because it’s alive in a small cage, doesn’t mean it’s really living.
I have a younger cousin that got rabbits. They got two but later left for vacation leaving food behind for them. One of them died. When I visited and saw the narrow cage, the survivor was sitting in its own poop.. Rabbits need space. Not a 2x3 ft cage. They feed him so many snacks instead of their primary diet which is hay. Rabbits are not beginner pets but the parents thought otherwise. Sigh.
They are lagomorph and CUY

It’s like having a child. 🤣
THIS IS THE MOST INCORRECT INFORMATION CIRCULATING OUT THERE. they are NOT low maintenance. They are an extremely alot of trouble. They need vegetables (and only certain kinds, pellets, and most importantly HAY.) I have heard from a lady who owned a guinea pig and had never bought him hay.. probably why he didnt live long at all. Cleaning after them is a tremendous amount of work.
The video literally mentioned everything you said.
@@Gingenuity they didn't say it was hard or that you have Gove them.24/7 hay, need vegetables contain vitamin c which is needed daily for them, cleaning is daily since they poop alot so 2 or more going be mounds lol.
@@Gingenuity ummm.... did you even watch the fucking thing??
I have guinea pigs, and imo they are pretty low maintenance
You mainly just have to clean their poos a few times everyday (fleece liners make it very easy to just sweep it up with a dustpan and brush)
And side jobs would be making sure they have enough hay/grass, pellets and water and feed them some vegetables (only like a handful everyday, its not much, you can grow the veg and they can eat a lot of variety)
@@lizz9907 yes, you sound like a good owner, they need half a cup, but it doesnt need to be exact (per piggy) and make sure you wash their veggies, and get them from the store, or grow them without pesticides. When I had guinea pigs (dont hate on me I was a child) I got some of their food from outside in the neighborhood, and although I washed it thoroughly, they passed away from e-coli, which I think had something to do with the veggies.
guinea pigs are the perfect pet change my mind
“Which means they can be quite noisy!”
*proceeds to show us a guinea pig that looks like it discovered how I hamster yawns*
Oh and something I didn't learn until I owned one. They don't sleep. Well, they do but it's like 15 mins at a time every so often. So if you're expecting a decrease of noise at night, hahahahahahahaha!!! Mine got peeved that I wasn't paying him any attention and started to chew on his water bottle. Teeth on metal can wake the dead.
Oh mine does this and it's so bothersome - like I love the little dude but my gosh I'm going mad 💀
Also you don't truly know when they sleep since they don't close their eyes unless they really feel safe, which btw is very hard to gain their trust
I recently got guinea pigs. I have never been happier. They are like fluff balls, that are chill and would never bite. When I pick them up onto bed they like to snuggle into me it's super cute. Plus the wheeking makes my heart melt. Angel potatoes
Lucky you. When i was a kid i had guinea pigs and they never liked to cuddle with us. No matter how often we tried.
I have 3 they dont really cuddle execpt ginger she was exactly likes yours until she died:(
angel potatoes is such a true description 😂❤
I have several rabbits and one likes to snuggle but he doesn’t like me holding my phone so he tries to knock it out of my hand. There’s always a shy one it seems. So you never know what personality they’re going to have.
I miss my little sweet potato, I lost him this October at the age of 6. A beautiful ginger, orange boy with bright red eyes. Rest in peace Kona.
So Cute ❤😊
I have a guinea pig named Oliver, this dude is the sweetest thing ever. He likes to cuddle with my plushies and also likes to lick people. If they become the most popular pet then they deserve that ❤❤❤
They aren’t really low maintenance you have to clean their cage once a day at least make sure to spend time with them and always make sure to have at least two, if you’re busy or squeamish to pee and poo they don’t make good pets
All pets pee and poo though!
Oh no, once a day...bro come on that statement itself just depleted your argument.
@@oranjmusemeyer968 yes, that is true, but each does different.
I have guinea pigs, and they're pretty low maintenance
The main job is to clean up their poos a few times everyday (and fleece liners as the bedding makes it super easy to just sweep up with a dustpan and brush, just change the fleece liners and pee pads every so often)
Side jobs are like making sure they have enough hay/grass, pellets and water, and feed them some vegetables
If they live indoors maybe, which is gross
Just know they SHED LIKE MAD. Absolutely heinous amounts of shedding all the time. Otherwise best pet ever and the squeaks are the best part
Well no , some don't shed at all ( like Rexes ).
my guinea pig sheds like crazy 😭
So what you’re saying is… don’t go out and buy 10 of them at my next mental breakdown
It really depends on the breed of guinea pig. Some illnesses can also make them shed more as well. I have 5 healthy guineas and I usually look like I own at least two dogs with how much they all shed.
Squeaks are good, but the nuzzling when petting their heads is my favorite.
They will keep you up all night with their chattering.
THOOSE ARE THE CUTEST LITTLE GUINEA PIGS I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!❤❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

“Realitively low maintenance” famous last words… and getting them a cage mate is not an option, you must have at least 2 housed together.
One of my Guinea pig just died and I only have one now and I told my parents that mocha is going to get depressed so we need to get another one
I have two Guinea pigs and OH MA GAWD THEY ARE THE MOST CUTEST THING EVER!! ❤️💞
🥲🥲I have Johnny he my pig 🐖
BAHAHAHAH STOP THE ONE RIDING IN THE CAR REMINDS ME OF “i woke up in a new Bugatti”
Also, if you decide to adopt one from another person and not a store (I don’t recommend stores), make sure to only adopt cavies that have been sexed properly by a vet as early as possible. I adopted a very young little male piggy for the male Guinea pig I already had to have a friend. I ended up with five total Guinea pigs 😅 SHE was already pregnant and the babies were all girls 😂
Had the exact same experience. I got one from a woman who was “experienced” in breeding them. She gave me two males, I ended up with a male and a pregnant female. The babies were adorable and I loved them but not everyone is prepared to have 5 tiny piggies overnight.
Yep. Very very good advice.
the babies also can breed with their fathers, so still separate them unless you want more LOL
@@monsieur_swiggleton I ended up building a huge c&c cage and giving the first male his own separated suite while the ladies all had a much larger portion. I made sure that they all had the recommended amount of room per piggy. I didn’t want the guy to be alone so he could still see and sniff them but not get to them. They were eventually all comfortable going to the connecting wall and hanging out with him since it was just the wire cage separating them.
I still felt bad that he couldn’t physically bond with another Guinea pigs though and it was one of the reasons I got them all adopted a few months later. I still miss those squeakers but I made sure they went to happy homes.
@@Carnibee its okay if they are like near each other if that makes sense. like if he physically couldnt bond then its fine as long as he could like see them play.
If I remember correctly, 8n Norway it's illegal to adopt only one guinea pig. You need always to get two
you mean Switzerland
@@V0RYNDAGOTHUR I have worse memory than a gold fish.
@@V0RYNDAGOTHUR No, Norway too as well as every European country. Only Switzerland has a particular rule, but in every European country, owning just one pig is animal abuse.
There so cute
I have guinea pigs, and there's nothing low maintenance about them. 😊
I remember owning a guinea pig she was the sweetest thing ever always made that adorable noise when we went to feed and play with her she loved cuddles and attention I miss her dearly
“Remember to do your research before you bring one home”
I really wish more people did this with all pets in general. I work at a pet store so I’ve seen plenty of people come in who got a pet but don’t know how to properly care for them.
I have 18 guinea pigs i treat them like they are my kids❤
Expert level pet in my opinion, they require so much maintenance to keep them happy. And you need at the very least two so be ready to spend most your time enjoying the animal cleaning up after them. You free roam them for 20 minutes expect 16 craps in that duration.
Love them, best pet ever!!!
I used to have a Guinea pig. She died an hour ago and I love her so much❤❤🕊️
I absolutely love my Piggies! And believe me they are a lot of work but are completely worth it.
My first Guinea pig LIVED my grandmother and would always chirp whenever he heard her voice. So cute!
I can confirm they are great pets if you love small and loving creatures I have one and she is so sweet ❤
Aw, cute. I would recommend getting another (BUT, if you got her from a rescue, and they SPECIFICALLY said she *can't* be housed with another, then it's okay.) But if you got her from a pet shop, GET HER A FRIEND!
My guinea pig hovers when he runs
One of My sons Guinea pigs used to bite…they weren’t as low maintenance as he’s making you believe.
absolutely true they’re not low maintenance at all but they only bite if they’re in fear or pain
Please get more than one guinea pig especially if you won't always be there. I learned this the hard and depressing way
Mans was about to get a victory royale
They are the most cutest when it comes to their little face🥹
I had 5 piggies and one thing you should know is they are prone to cancer. 3 out of our five had confirmed cancer and 2 passed away from it. 2 others had "possible cancer" and that mixed with them being very old meant it was getting hard to pay for the medical bills. They went to an old piggies home after we found out about the cancer as they would be looked after properly for their lasts days by someone who could afford to. I know it sounds cruel but it was the best thing we could do for them as we couldn't go through any more deaths and it meant they would live out their days with other old piggies. My brothers piggy (yes singular... she doesn't like other guinea pigs... at all.) Also has cancer and may need to be put down if it gets any bigger. IDK if my old piggies are still alive, it's been a long time since they went to their home. I hope they are doing okay. Moral of that story is they can get sick a lot. They get hey poke, bloat, cancer, UTIs and easily get pneumonia (one of our girls had it. It was caught early so she was okay in the end) and vet bills are not cheap. Please if you want to get them then as said please do your research (like you should with any animal)
Yeah one of our girls ended up with brain cancer, she started to lay on her side and have seizures. Was very bad to watch and we had her put to sleep to end her suffering
@@KaylieRaynePoor baby....mine didn't have cancer for the 6 years he lived, but he had a benign tumor that compressed his bowels, and just made it harder for him to poop normally. That's likely what he passed away from

Love ‘em though!
When my Guinea pigs died about a year ago I cried lots and after a year I still do. 😥 I miss them so much
I have two guinea pigs and both are my love ❤️
"They can be relatively low maintenance"
Yeah sure, tell that to younger me when I got my guinea pigs. Because not only was only one of them supposed to be mine, my brother who also had one, decides to do jack shit.
So I not only did I end up taking care of two brother guinea pigs who were filled with energy and me learning from as to what to do, I ended up becoming their father.
I have to clean the top of where my guinea pigs step on in the cage because of the newspaper I put that's filled with piss and so much shit that you wonder how many more times they shit compared to a human.
Then, there's the matter of finding creative ways to give them places to hide so they feel protected as they prefer darker spots to remain hidden and away from noise.
Next up is washing that whole fucking cage once a week which is easy in summer but is a pain in the ass to clean in winter that I want to shoot myself due to how problematic it is for me.
Then I have to wash my little critters with a certain type of soap, put them in a sort of bathtub or fill a plastic box with water that isn't too small and also making sure they don't try to jump out because they will try to leave whilst you wash them.
Next, cut their fucking nails. I am always so scared of cutting their nails in fear of cutting a piece that you shouldn't cut otherwise their nails get longer which makes it harder for them to move and they become like Black Panther's claws.
As for the last part, spending at least an hour with those two which drains me since I either carry them with me together or I just don't come up with shit to do with them.
I already lost one guinea pig now and his brother is also grieving. I'm still gonna take care of him because I love him. But when he passes on, I'm done with animals. I love animals but I'm not up to dealing with the emotional stress and trauma it does to me.
So basic pet care is traumatising nowadays? Though i suppose youre right, its prob best if you dont have a pet
You sound very overwhelmed. Here’s a virtual pizza >>> 🍕
@@missi44 I've gotten used to it but the emotional trauma I got from losing one was already bad enough.

i completely understand where you’re coming from. i impulse got a guinea pig in 2016 when i was 17 and having a hard time, and i eventually got him a brother and they are my whole world. my first boy passed in november so now i adopted 2 other boys to be neighbours for my other piggy and it’s a lot of work and money. i love them more than anything and i dread the day i have to say goodbye to them too. having animals is always stressful and emotional
JUST DON'T FEED THEM CABBAGE. They can/should have: lettuce, grass, capsicum (bell pepper I think it is for you Americans), carrot, cucumber etc. And they need dry pellets not seeds and make sure they're ok for guinea pigs. Every pet I’ve ever owned alway did well by themselves. I alway tried introducing a second pet and they get aggressive with their companion and with me. When I had my Guinea Pig she absolutely hated every Guinea pig I tried to socialize her with and she ended up being alone and lived for like 5 years alone but she loved human attention though and often demanded it🤣🤣🤣
They are great cuddlers
Actually, Guinea pigs aren’t the cuddliest animals, even though if they know they’re owner well they can enjoy petting and stuff like that. If they are picked up or someone does something that scares them, they will not show this but just be still and quiet out of fear which often misleads to people thinking they like it but really they’re just afraid😕
They taste yummy too.

Usual guinea pigs: "Yeah thats right. I can take care of myselffffff"
Peanut: " I own this hooman!!! You will work for me and take care of me!!!!" (VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE)
Saying they're vocal is an UNDERSTATEMENT. When they're hungry in the morning and want breakfast their screams WILL PIERCE YOUR EARS from how loud and high pitched they are. I guarantee you'll never need an alarm clock again. They are super cute tho as long as you can stand getting woken up by "WEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! WEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" every single day
