    You might try removing the front license plate. That's a big obstacle to air flow and you don't need it on the car at the track. Just a thought.

    Some tips for your overheating. drill a hole in your thermostat, put a larger pulley on your water pump, these techniques work by slowing the flow of water which means it spends more in time the rad and actually cools better than faster flowing coolant. If you use another engine for it down the line have the block caustic dipped to remove all rust from the block, especially in the water jackets and the outside of the bores. Also move your oil coolers away from the rad, as they will just be heatsoaking your radiatior. really enjoying your regular content too.

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  9 лет назад

      +m16a2m4 We're hoping some ducting and a vented hood should do the trick because really we're not seeing engine temps that are really high so those measures are more for preventative then anything else.

  • @GevoA1
    @GevoA1 8 лет назад +5

    Have you guys checked for air bubbles in the lines? This will cause sudden spikes and drops of temps as well.

    How about a setup video where you go through the basics off setting up suspension.
    Something like showing full soft compression and what happens. Then the same with rebound. Then dialing in your sway bar. What to expect, what to fix etc.

    I was talking to some guys from Japan about my Fit, and one of them commented that (being an Alberta car) I don't have a front plate, and how much the front license plate restricts air flow to the radiator. Even to the point that most people who run a road car at the track will remove it. Sounds really simple, but if you're worried, it might be a free and easy solution to a little more cooling.

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 9 лет назад +1

      +Scott Ryman that's actually a great point and something we talked about after this track test. We'll remove it next time (going in a few days) and see if it helps any.

    A lot of guys running a wing set the car up scary loose mechanically for quick rotation in slower corners and use the wing to bring the car back to neutral or a slight push to make it driveable through high speed corners.

    They have oil coolers for the firs where the the bumper running lights go. You can have two on each hole and you can have the radiator unrestricted by those two oil coolers. Check it out. Nice job with the rest of the car.

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  9 лет назад

      +FAINTEN17 Yes but the Jackson racing kit places them behind the intercooler so we don't want to mess with the design. If there is infact an overheating issue then we may work on relocating them.

  • @aaguirre123
    @aaguirre123 9 лет назад +3

    is the reason for your under steering is because the anti-sway bar that was installed in the front is stiffer than the rear? Also thank you for your public service to frs/brz owners like me.

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 9 лет назад +1

      +aaguirre123 we're pretty sure the understeer is being caused by the giant rear wing as well as a bad rear alignment (it currently has 1/4'' toe-in and about 3.5-degrees of negative camber). We're getting the car aligned properly at NV Auto soon and will be sure to loosen up the rear with zero toe and less camber, plus adding a front splitter before our next track test should help balance out aero grip and make the car a lot more neutral than it was during this test.

      +nox0underling We definitely did but we don't find they actually do much on the track when the car is operating at a higher engine temperature. This is a very good read: www.tuneruniversity.com/blog/2012/04/low-temp-thermostats-whats-the-advantage/

    someone tell me plz. does the cooling fan still work when you going over 45mph???????

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 9 лет назад

      +Yuelin Fan no, we don't believe it does. Running the fan at higher speeds can actually reduce cooling efficiency. That said, because we have an intercooler and two oil coolers in front of the radiator now, the fans may actually help even at speeds over 45mph. We'll do some testing to find out.

    If you open up more holes for cooling at the front you will compromise your aerodynamics; ie. increased drag, as for downforce; cannards, and a splitter for the front and a diffuser for the back. The hood should totally have vents. Kudos guys!

    • @speedacademy

    Looking to get a new toy, and since I'm a follower of Speed Academy, I am checking to see whats my options and perhaps get some ideas by watching your videos. I don't want a track car, but more like daily driver yet very capable car.
    (for example, i have a c63 but its auto only, and i had enough of it), so i was thinking maybe M3/335i or is300 (old school w/single turbo), any other options?
    3 things are must: Manual (w/ clutch that is), Low dBA on highways, RWD.

      +Roman Ash you're 6'11'' 250 lbs? Damn, you play in the NBA? :P I think you're on the right track with a M3 (you thinking E46 or E90/92?). Those are spacious cars so should fit you pretty well and they're tons of fun, great sounding engines when you get on the gas, but cruise nice and quiet on the highway for daily driving. It's a great all-around enthusiast car. We really like the IS300 too, and with a single turbo setup it would be plenty fast. You'd certainly have a lot more budget to play with if you started with a IS300 vs a M3.

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 9 лет назад

      +The Ultimate Racer add splitter, track test to see if understeer is sufficiently reduced. Plus we're getting an alignment at NV Auto because right now there's rear toe-in and too much rear camber, so that was contributing to the understeer too, I'm sure. We'll get it sorted once the splitter is on there. Would love to wind tunnel test it, of course, but we don't have the budget for that. That wind tunnel video we did with Sasha at UOIT's Speed Lab was a one-time special.

    Hey guys, It wouldnt hurt to throw in a lower degree thermostat along with some Redline water wetter. Im surprised the kit didnt come with a new tstat.

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  9 лет назад

      +jdmcommute Truth be told, I don't find lower deg thermostats do all that much after the first 5-10 min of hard driving. Sure they opener sooner which in theory should keep the engine temps lower for longer but on engines that run this hot 210F+ I'm not so sure it'll help on hot days like we experienced.

      +Speed Academy I love your videos but you guys are Canadian, last time I checked nobody under the age of 80 uses anything but Celsius. Keep up the good work otherwise.

    • @jdmcommute
      @jdmcommute 9 лет назад

      This is true, maybe the radiator just isnt up to the task. Lol. My mishimoto 3 row was the best mod ive done on my STI. But I agree with your guys route of venting the hood first. It would not only help with cooling but aero as well by creating a low pressure area in the bay. Thumbs up my Canadian tuner bros! You guys can use Celsius and metric sytems all day in my opinon, thats what conversion charts are for. Cheers!

    Radiator fans do not move enough air while racing to make a difference in cooling. Fans are only there for slow driving like stop and go driving or standing still. Most Time Attack and full out racecars like Australian v8 Supercars do not run fans.
    If you had that much understeer from the wing, you should have put the wing on the lowest AOA or just removed it and you would have ran faster lap times.

      That's good to hear. I don't wanna throw curve balls at ya or anything but I hear that there's a lot of hype right now for a new roots type supercharger by Edelbrock, and I hear it's great!! If you crave mid-range torque and want something new after you've tried the JR supercharger, I'd recommend giving that a look :)

      could have sworn somewere that american/ canadian gas uses a different octane rating system so our 91 octane would be similar to your 93 octane, with 100 octane gas (103 octane in europe) being rare but available

      BeastMode1210 yeah might be, I wasn't aware of the fact only such low octane gas is available regularly in CAN/USA. I'm curious what kinds of power this set up would manage on 102 octane with a new tune.

    dont need a rad fan on the track , just in the pits , lots of guys run no rad fan. rad fans dont do anything above 40

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  8 лет назад

      +Sounds of silence You're correct, a rad fan will actually reduce the flow of the air through the rad at high speeds but we still need to ensure it works for in the pits and the drives home.

    • @speedacademy
      @speedacademy  9 лет назад

      +Zackary Lentz The engineering of something like that is way too much work for what we need to accomplish. Some ducting and hood vents are really all that it will take to get temps down.
