  • When I was looking for info before I bought my Jackson Racing Supercharger kit for our 2013 FRS/Toyota 86, I couldn't find the kind of videos on it that I wanted to see, mostly installs and not what it's like having one or driving around or what the dyno results are. So I made my own.

    Hello! Thanks for posting these videos. I'm weighing my options on supercharger brands right now. Two questions for you if you have the time.
    How is your car doing now after a year of driving it?
    And any reason you choose the Jackson racing? It's currently leading my list but I'm curious to why you ended up with this one. I want a centrifugal for sure.
    Thank you and hope all is well.

      Hi, no problem. I’d had an FRS before and had done research for years. Jackson Racing SC had least reported issues (belt snaps, etc), top end customer service (I called and talked to Oscar Jr), a very solid base level tune (I shopped for custom tuning a while and it ran pretty nice on the base map) and it also looks like it is supposed to be there (a shop told me this literally two days ago when I had to take it for state inspection). It also delivered turbo-like gains out of the box without turbo issues. No heat problems, no wrapping everything. No tapping oil lines. Has its own self contained oil system (I recommend having a shop install it, a lot of the do it yourself guys report oil leaks, which I do not have. I mean you can do it but it’s still a complex system tied to your engine, so if you screw it up…) But I didn’t have to buy the extras like a bunch of catch cans and all that but I’m also not trying to go for 500whp. The car is fine today. I did swap the stock wheels for 18x8s and they feel perfect with grip and everything now. The increase in power and torque will make a setup that feels perfect for NA feel less adequate. I have no complaints. I love driving it around. Sounds awesome. Didn’t expect the bypass to be as loud as it is but I don’t have headers or a super loud exhaust that might drown it out. I’m running DC Sports catback with it because I lie how those sound and it doesn’t drone at all, sounds stock inside the cabin until you put your foot into it. It’s a secondary car for me but I still drive it 3-4K miles per year. It’s actually 18 months with the system on it. I would say have Toyota or a shop check your engine first, I did pay Toyota $300 to make sure compressions etc was good and inspect everything, tuner said my engine looked awesome in the data he was getting. The only other SC I seriously considered was HKS. Solid product as well.

      @@WDKWCDT thank you so much for the detailed response. I was also looking into hks but they keep switching models vs the Jackson racing who seem a little more sure of their product. I autocross my frs and I fully accept that eventually I may damage the engine and need to rebuild it. But after having the car for a few years and modifying it to my liking, its finally time to add power. :)

    Do you know if UEL headers would affect anything? Picked up a Frs with this kit and it’s running mxp comp exhaust but i used to run tomei type 80 and tomei headers on my old Frs and i wanna go back to that setup

    • @WDKWCDT
      @WDKWCDT  3 года назад +1

      You will need to retune, I think. If the headers are noisy expect them to drown out your supercharger sound quite a bit. Part of the reason you can hear so much with mine is that I have an exhaust that only gets loud - outside the car - when I want it to. I hate super noisy exhausts that drone, personally, and all that popcorn tune stuff isn’t for me. I will eventually replace all exhaust components (because I will have to) with parts tested for sound so it will be smooth toned and quieter than a lot of other setups.

    What's the 0-60?

    • @WDKWCDT
      @WDKWCDT  2 года назад +1

      I never timed it. I would wager a guess of 5.5-6.5 seconds, given the torque is about 200 and it doesn’t have launch control.

    Do you feel a lack of low-end torque with JRSC? Is it easy to spin the rear wheels if you floor it from around 3k RPM?

    • @WDKWCDT
      @WDKWCDT  3 года назад +2

      A lot of that depends on your tune and your tires. If you want big low end torque you need a root or a twin screw where it’s less turbo-like and doesn’t build boost the way a centrifugal does. I wanted turbo-like without all the turbo oil and heat crap (been there, done that) or the fuel system changes and wastegate problems doing a turbo NA conversion often comes with. The JRSC gives equal or more power than most turbo kits at a similar price out of the box although any supercharger has a lower ceiling than a turbo. I have little interest in going much past 300whp and I’m sitting right on that already, so I’m quite pleased with the kit. I can chirp the wheels going into third but I’ve never tried spinning them on purpose at 3k because I am not a drifter nor am I interested in burning out my tires. But they’ll spin when I want them to most of the time.

      @@WDKWCDT fuel pump/injectors? or all stock? e85 to get to 300whp I presume?

    • @WDKWCDT
      @WDKWCDT  3 года назад +2

      @@valentinedpg all stock except the catback. I don’t mess with flex fuel conversions. Everyone I know who has engine problems has done e85 vs the folks who didn’t use it, they never had those kinds of problems. IMO it’s overrated and more trouble (and cost) than it is worth. My tuner said none of that is necessary until you want to go over 300whp. I actually heard that from several I talked to when discussing output goals. I’m calculated to be pretty close to that already after the custom tune (I hit 248 whp at 5.5 psi and am now running at 9.5 psi, the math checks out) and it’s plenty quick. Keep in mind the more you go over 300 the more stock parts you will also have to begin to replace (clutch assembly, transmission). I never planned to go over that and am happy with my current power output. But it’s your build, you can do whatever you want :-)

      @@valentinedpg in the forums I belong to, those guys have more issues than guys who don’t mess with it and I don’t personally want to deal with the hassle. They also don’t have much where I live and driving 25 miles for a tank of gas isn’t attractive to me. Like i said, it’s your build. You can do whatever you’d like. E85 just isn’t something I’m interested in using. I don’t need to mess with it to get the power I want out of the vehicle. We have 93 octane here and besides, big power gains are what the supercharger is for 😃

      @@jesseramos7990 that’s cool but I don’t publish personal details on here. What are your questions? I’m happy to answer them here. If you want to know why I traded it? Two reasons - wanted to go from two cars to one. And they had a very low mileage Civic Type R in my favorite color at a great deal. So I traded them both for it, I was never going to get another shot like that at a type R and I had so much equity in both cars I just used that for down payment. But that was random and not planned, my wife likes wandering around car dealerships and we stumbled onto the type R. Kind of like how we found the FRS actually a few years ago. Plus, I was pretty much done with the mods I wanted to do and had had my fun with FRS. It’s never been raced. I didn’t drive it super hard. Supercharger has maybe 4K miles on it. Keep up with the supercharger oil. 93 octane only. the rims, they’re ceramic coated and a year old. Tires have less than 4K miles on them. Tune is custom from delicious tuning. May want to refresh it or do your own. It wasn’t driven a lot, I work from home and might drive 500 miles a month and I was splitting that between two cars. I probably at this point was driving the FRS once or twice a week if that. It was garage kept. It got detailed yearly and a coat of wax twice a year. Not much else to it. All the interior upgrades are from Subaru and Toyota parts, they’re genuine. Like I literally ordered and picked them up from our local dealerships outside of 86 bases, those are from ft86speedfactory. But if that Type R had been a color I didn’t like, or the dealer hadn’t given me what I wanted for my trades, that FRS would still be in my garage. Any other questions?
