We Didn’t Know We Couldn’t Do That, Inc. because everyone is always telling me what I can or can’t do based on this stereotype or that assumption or whatever. So I’ll do whatever I want and when social pressure to conform arises I’ll just say, “I didn’t know I couldn’t do that. But I did it so…”

There were four cars on the planet I knew I'd do it for. And one just kind of randomly popped up right in front of me one day, and the price was right...but I'm still happy to answer questions on why I picked what I picked and what living with the supercharged boxer four was like. So feel free to ask.

@@matthewle1 that was the base tune loaded at 5psi. I did remote tuning with Delicious tuning and maxed that kit out without the high boost pulley at about 10psi was the highest I saw it go on the boost gauge, had about 297 to the wheels and 210 torque when it was all said and done.

Why did you use The Dark Knight Theme? The Nightmare on Elm Street theme would have fit Red K Supergirl more.
It fit what I was feeling when I envisioned the scenes together. Build up to an outburst. For that theme, I would’ve used different scenes. Like starting with the peanut thumping. With a Freddy influence, the menace has to be there right away.
@@WDKWCDT It would still fit Red K Supergirl more than the Dark Knight theme.

how much hp does this add
About 100 at least in my experience if you go with the C-38 version but it won't be to the wheels looking about 50-80 wheel gain
getting mine installed soon cant wait. What are other supporting mod you got for the supercharger?
Get a boost gauge. Temp gauge. Oil gauge. Or get the digital all in one like I had. You need to be able to see what’s going on in there without a laptop. Updated the MAP sensor. Stock one can only do 5.5 PSI. I was running 9.5 after custom tune. I ended up getting bigger wheels to handle the increased torque (18x8s). Catback exhaust. I didn’t want crazy power numbers because the car is so light and you already better know what you’re doing at 9.5 PSi, because the power boost does change the handling. Here at sea level where I’m at that put me around 285/300 wheel and 210 torque on a nice day. You can get coilovers to help with some of that but wider wheel and better tires were key to getting it to stop slipping at launch. I wouldn’t bother with injectors or fuel pump upgrades unless you’re planning to get a high boost pulley and max out the supercharger. You don’t need them unless you’re going for 350+ but at that point you’re going to have to start replacing clutches, transmissions, etc or they’ll break under the increased load. I’d also get an engine check done, I had Toyota go over it before I installed the supercharger and learned it was in fine shape which the tuner actually commented on how good of shape that engine was in, it’s why he was comfortable pushing it to nearly 10 PSI. Note: I have a lot of experience with boosted boxer engines this was just my first and probably only NA conversion. It was fun but I also did not daily drive it. It was a third car that only went out on nice days and weekends.
Cool edits!
Did you install it yourself or a shop? How much did it cost you all total with tuning, installation, etc for the kit. Thanks.
Man that sounds great, I’m very interested in this kit for my BRZ. I seen you went with Delicious Tuning as well which is who I’m leaning towards. Any supporting mods? Is it well worth the price?
I had it done by an experienced speed shop. I regret not a dime. It’s not a turbo but you get the sound and a lot of the punch unless you’re trying for 400whp (I wasn’t). If you want to pursue that get the bigger kit from JR, this one caps off at 10.5psi even with the high boost pulley and that’s about 350whp max. Only supporting mod was a catback exhaust. I did end up buying 18x8s to deal with the torque increase, it just needed more grip after the upgrade and custom tune. You will need a new MAP sensor for the tune or you’re capped at 5 psi. I was running 9.5 peak. It was fun. At 5.5 psi it was doing 247 wheel and 198 torque. I never dynoed it after the tune but the butt dyno said “this is a blast.” Probably had between 265 and 295 whp at peak. Only reason I traded it was…the perfect Civic Type R was available.
Where did you get that gauge on your ac vent?
It’s a P3 Digital boost gauge but it does other things. I shopped for a deal because they’re not real cheap but it plugs into the OBDII port and you can use it for some diagnostics. I’d Google P3 Vent Gauge for the make and model. The specific model is a Multi-Gauge. 10 minute install if you order it in the vent already, a bit longer if you have to fit it yourself.

do you miss anything about the FRS?
So far? No. The Type R can do the same things from a performance standpoint, but better and faster. it’s much more comfortable, has better visibility and a lot more space to do things where sometimes the FRS was just too small. I’m also tall so bigger is always more comfortable to me.
Hello! I have a couple of questions about your car and was wondering if I can message you privately if you have any other form of social media?
I’m more comfortable if you just ask here. What are your questions?
@@WDKWCDT well i recently purchased this vehicle that used to belong to you and I just had some questions about the car
@@jesseramos7990 that’s cool but I don’t publish personal details on here. What are your questions? I’m happy to answer them here. If you want to know why I traded it? Two reasons - wanted to go from two cars to one. And they had a very low mileage Civic Type R in my favorite color at a great deal. So I traded them both for it, I was never going to get another shot like that at a type R and I had so much equity in both cars I just used that for down payment. But that was random and not planned, my wife likes wandering around car dealerships and we stumbled onto the type R. Kind of like how we found the FRS actually a few years ago. Plus, I was pretty much done with the mods I wanted to do and had had my fun with FRS. It’s never been raced. I didn’t drive it super hard. Supercharger has maybe 4K miles on it. Keep up with the supercharger oil. 93 octane only. the rims, they’re ceramic coated and a year old. Tires have less than 4K miles on them. Tune is custom from delicious tuning. May want to refresh it or do your own. It wasn’t driven a lot, I work from home and might drive 500 miles a month and I was splitting that between two cars. I probably at this point was driving the FRS once or twice a week if that. It was garage kept. It got detailed yearly and a coat of wax twice a year. Not much else to it. All the interior upgrades are from Subaru and Toyota parts, they’re genuine. Like I literally ordered and picked them up from our local dealerships outside of 86 bases, those are from ft86speedfactory. But if that Type R had been a color I didn’t like, or the dealer hadn’t given me what I wanted for my trades, that FRS would still be in my garage. Any other questions?
@@WDKWCDT Hey again thanks for telling more about the car I appreciate it. I just wanted to know what type of tune did you do to it?
And I guess how the process went when you tuned it with delicious tuning
How’s the kit been working out for you? Thinking of going to Jaksons shop to get it installed. Stock fuel injectors?
Hi. Yes, stock injectors. It’s been great. I’ve had it nearly two years now. Caveat - this ain’t my daily driver. I’ve put maybe 4K miles on it with the supercharger. But it has been worth every penny and I have no regrets.
How much power it makes?
Out of the box tune did 247 whp and 197 lbs foot of torque (there’s a video of it on the dyno with the sheet). We added about 4 psi during custom tuning later so somewhere between 280 and 300, I haven’t had it dynoed again yet.
Hello! Thanks for posting these videos. I'm weighing my options on supercharger brands right now. Two questions for you if you have the time. How is your car doing now after a year of driving it? And any reason you choose the Jackson racing? It's currently leading my list but I'm curious to why you ended up with this one. I want a centrifugal for sure. Thank you and hope all is well.
Hi, no problem. I’d had an FRS before and had done research for years. Jackson Racing SC had least reported issues (belt snaps, etc), top end customer service (I called and talked to Oscar Jr), a very solid base level tune (I shopped for custom tuning a while and it ran pretty nice on the base map) and it also looks like it is supposed to be there (a shop told me this literally two days ago when I had to take it for state inspection). It also delivered turbo-like gains out of the box without turbo issues. No heat problems, no wrapping everything. No tapping oil lines. Has its own self contained oil system (I recommend having a shop install it, a lot of the do it yourself guys report oil leaks, which I do not have. I mean you can do it but it’s still a complex system tied to your engine, so if you screw it up…) But I didn’t have to buy the extras like a bunch of catch cans and all that but I’m also not trying to go for 500whp. The car is fine today. I did swap the stock wheels for 18x8s and they feel perfect with grip and everything now. The increase in power and torque will make a setup that feels perfect for NA feel less adequate. I have no complaints. I love driving it around. Sounds awesome. Didn’t expect the bypass to be as loud as it is but I don’t have headers or a super loud exhaust that might drown it out. I’m running DC Sports catback with it because I lie how those sound and it doesn’t drone at all, sounds stock inside the cabin until you put your foot into it. It’s a secondary car for me but I still drive it 3-4K miles per year. It’s actually 18 months with the system on it. I would say have Toyota or a shop check your engine first, I did pay Toyota $300 to make sure compressions etc was good and inspect everything, tuner said my engine looked awesome in the data he was getting. The only other SC I seriously considered was HKS. Solid product as well.
@@WDKWCDT thank you so much for the detailed response. I was also looking into hks but they keep switching models vs the Jackson racing who seem a little more sure of their product. I autocross my frs and I fully accept that eventually I may damage the engine and need to rebuild it. But after having the car for a few years and modifying it to my liking, its finally time to add power. :)
@@3kgt964 np have fun. Cuz it’s a lot of fun 😀 I might go take mine out right now lol
Sounds really great!
Do you feel a lack of low-end torque with JRSC? Is it easy to spin the rear wheels if you floor it from around 3k RPM?
A lot of that depends on your tune and your tires. If you want big low end torque you need a root or a twin screw where it’s less turbo-like and doesn’t build boost the way a centrifugal does. I wanted turbo-like without all the turbo oil and heat crap (been there, done that) or the fuel system changes and wastegate problems doing a turbo NA conversion often comes with. The JRSC gives equal or more power than most turbo kits at a similar price out of the box although any supercharger has a lower ceiling than a turbo. I have little interest in going much past 300whp and I’m sitting right on that already, so I’m quite pleased with the kit. I can chirp the wheels going into third but I’ve never tried spinning them on purpose at 3k because I am not a drifter nor am I interested in burning out my tires. But they’ll spin when I want them to most of the time.
@@WDKWCDT fuel pump/injectors? or all stock? e85 to get to 300whp I presume?
@@valentinedpg all stock except the catback. I don’t mess with flex fuel conversions. Everyone I know who has engine problems has done e85 vs the folks who didn’t use it, they never had those kinds of problems. IMO it’s overrated and more trouble (and cost) than it is worth. My tuner said none of that is necessary until you want to go over 300whp. I actually heard that from several I talked to when discussing output goals. I’m calculated to be pretty close to that already after the custom tune (I hit 248 whp at 5.5 psi and am now running at 9.5 psi, the math checks out) and it’s plenty quick. Keep in mind the more you go over 300 the more stock parts you will also have to begin to replace (clutch assembly, transmission). I never planned to go over that and am happy with my current power output. But it’s your build, you can do whatever you want :-)
@@WDKWCDT huuuh issues with e85 ? From where did you hear/experience that from? I've been running it for 4 years now as do others
@@valentinedpg in the forums I belong to, those guys have more issues than guys who don’t mess with it and I don’t personally want to deal with the hassle. They also don’t have much where I live and driving 25 miles for a tank of gas isn’t attractive to me. Like i said, it’s your build. You can do whatever you’d like. E85 just isn’t something I’m interested in using. I don’t need to mess with it to get the power I want out of the vehicle. We have 93 octane here and besides, big power gains are what the supercharger is for 😃
Let me understand the tuning for this kit for carb compliance. With the factory tune option you still need an ecutek module, then a tune from a 3d party like a Delicious tuning? Or does the factory tune option come with everything you need. Did you go with this kit so you could still smog the car?
Hi the Carb tune is to comply for California emissions. I live in Texas. Delicious can tune for CA, I’m sure, but the Ecutek and base Jackson Racing tune will pass emissions and also I’m given to understand you need that CARB stamp of approval for the police in CA. It’s 50 state legal. But we don’t have that where I live. I just did it so I’d have a usable tune to drive the thing around until I settled on a tuner a couple of months later after I did some research and got recommendations from other platform owners around here with boosted rides. I did the MAP sensor upgrade with the custom tune, which we did over email and I did the logs and pulls because I wanted to experience that and learn how to read the ECU. (I’m an IT tech. That stuff interests me).
@@WDKWCDT Interesting, thank you. That explains why you purchased a tuner after the factory tune option. Yes, in CA we are stuck with the carb compliance because of bi-annual inspections, which also means exhaust systems need to stay stock up to the 2nd cat. Happy to hear the car makes acceptable power with just mufflers and the original kit.
I just picked up the c38 kit! I know im about 8 months late but how are things going? And I was wondering if I needed to dyno the out of the box tune or do I just flash my ecu and drive? And does it need to be broke in?
I saw you on the FB forum. Congrats 😀😀. I had a shop install mine (big hands, not good with tiny parts. Also, I mean, adding boost incorrectly will cause major problems and it was easiest and safest that way to me. Whatever they did I think they tweaked my bypass valve because everyone comments on being able to hear it dump air so well). They said they’d dyno it for like another $50. They also usually do and muscle cars and admitted they were curious because it pulled pretty well when they test drove it. But you don’t have to dyno it. I wouldn’t expect more than about 250whp or so with the carb tune. However, that’s close to 300 at the block and being a veteran of multiple Subaru boxer turbos (2 STis and a WRX) if you do not have a boost gauge or oil temp gauge get an all in one or get a set and install them. You definitely want to see what’s going on in there. That’s how I know where my boost over stock internal air pressure maxed out at 5.5 psi until I upgraded my MAP sensor and got it custom tuned later. people keep telling me it’s not possible to do more than 9. My gauge says 9.5. Jackson Racing told me the c30-94 with the base pulley maxes out at 10 psi. But people tell me a lot of things about my car that don’t appear to be true lol. I believe Jackson Racing and my gauge. Every car is different and most of us are running our own setups, all dynos are different, so take what some folks say about power, etc, with a grain of salt. I’m also in East Texas running at sea level on 93 octane so of course if you can only get 91 octane and/or are above sea level you won’t get the same results. Number doesn’t matter anyway it feels awesome to drive, and sounds like a jet engine all the time.
@@WDKWCDT I really appreciate this a lot man! Im just a worry wart🤣 I live in Michigan and running 93👍🏻 I was just seeing what I could be pushing because I wont know numbers for a while.. and I was thinking about gauges. But also about the ecutek Bluetooth kit?! Anyways I do have stock map and everything running on 93 I was just worried because I wanted to feel a big difference over stock for spending that kind of money 💰
@@connorbittner9279 no problem that’s why I posted these. I couldn’t even find a good sound video. Dyno numbers. Nothing. So I posted mine to help people with their choice. I regret not a dime spent. You should definitely notice a difference over stock. It isn’t a corvette but feels like how it should have come from the dealership with a top model to me. If nothing else, the rush as that rotrex spools and it starts pulling was worth it. Carb tune mostly erases the torque dip but my custom tune completely wiped it out. I noticed the difference between the custom tune and the carb tune as well, in terms of hp (I can get to 60 at the top of second gear now,). In these videos, I’m not breaching 6000rpm. If I did I’d be crazy speeding entering fourth and I’m not looking for that kind of trouble, that’s why you can hear me lay off the throttle in mid third gear lol I was just doing it for some crisp acceleration audio thru first and second. I should note this isn’t a daily driver, it’s my nice day fun car. But I don’t want to destroy it so I’m careful about how I do these mods.
@@WDKWCDT ohh okay so with your tune you are making a significant amount more then the carb! I cant wait to get the carb broke in and try it.. I need to find a place around me that dynos as well so I can get a tune thrown on there😎 my goal is to make 280-290 whp on all stock components👌🏻🔥
@@connorbittner9279 theoretically yes lol we added about 4 pounds of boost. I had 248 whp with the carb tune so run that through any boost calculator and it’s probably right around your goal. Which is pretty much the same as mine (about 300whp with stock fuel system and my catback). If not I wouldn’t have to do much more to get it there if I want but I’m having a ball with it already. It’s perfect (for me). I won’t be shocked if I dyno it again and it’s right there, though. I’m going to have them do my suspension later this year hopefully so we may see. Have fun. 😃
Looking to pick up this kit and this is the first time I've heard it with a bov make a noise like that, where did you buy your kit? I'm wondering if they put a different bov on it, that sounds amazing!
Thanks. It’s the c30-94 kit. I got it from ft86speedfactory. That’s the bypass valve it came with. One of the things I did that apparently most people don’t was to have it installed by a shop so I know it was done right and my vacuum lines are tight. I also don’t have an exhaust setup that drowns out everything else, just a dc sports catback that is loud when I want it to be but otherwise is comparable to stock and doesn’t drone. A lot of folks like ragged out crackling and popping exhausts and that will drown out everything else. I dislike those and will be choosing quieter parts that sound smooth when I inevitably have to replace the other exhaust components. I will say it’s quite something when these mustang guys and all hear that thing spool up then hiss as I zip by or realize they can’t catch me if there’s not enough room because they weigh so much and don’t have the whp to make up the difference without a lot of mods. I regret not a dime spent. And I keep it stealth. If you look at the grill real hard you can see the intercooler. But otherwise it looks and sounds like an 86 with an exhaust and a JDM TRD wing (working on doing the full TRD body kit) so everyone assumes I’m pretty slow. Which is exactly what I want them to think. 😁
What is the price tag of this type install including tune? And what kit did you use and where did you get it?
Hi. This kit with the carb tune is $5k. I had it installed for $1k by a local speed shop who specializes in race cars and adding boost recommended by another enthusiast. I have the Jackson Racing c30-94 kit. I did a lot of research and this kit just had what I was looking for - turbo-like sound and performance without turbo issues and extra expense like dealing with messy oil and overheating problems, good price right in the middle (the HKS kit was #2 and slightly cheaper but it doesn’t come with a short ram K&N intake like the JR kit does, so if you want that you will spend the difference anyway), had a good reputation, people report few issues with it. I got it from ft86speedfactory and I regret not a dime spent. If you plan to add big whp (350+) get the c38 kit. It’s only a little more expensive and has a bigger rotrex with more power potential. But for my build, the c30-94 is fine.
@@WDKWCDTthank you for your reply, you practically sold me. I really want turbo noises but without the complexity of turbo (heat management etc)
Can you hear it from the outside pretty while driving
I have no idea lol. But people stare at it. And people with windows down who think I’m a slow 86 do look over with surprise when they hear that thing spool up as I zip past them, so they definitely hear something 😁
You running a blow of valve or that’s the one it came with?
That's what it came with. Have to be much more careful with backflow on a supercharger, which is what that flutter sound some people like actually is. It isn't cool to me, because it usually means your spring rate in the BOV is inadequate and should be adjusted to actually release all the boost air pressure rather than shoving some of it back into the airflow. You can seriously damage your compressor doing that and blow the turbo, and you will likely wear the turbo out earlier and have to rebuild or replace it before you would've if you didn't do that to it. But turbos can take it better than a supercharger snail because its gasses in and out, so there's a bit of leeway with the airflow where it won't usually cause a catastrophic failure. Not so with a belt driven snail, so I am just not going to do that with this supercharger. If you do, I'd be verrry careful with the spring rate setting in the BOV and be prepared to kiss that Rotrex snail warranty goodbye. Note: I've had multiple WRXs and STIs where I messed with BOVs and learned the ins and outs.
C30 or c38 kit?
c30-94. DC Sports catback. 93 octane where I live. Custom tuned by Delicious Tuning.
Do you know if UEL headers would affect anything? Picked up a Frs with this kit and it’s running mxp comp exhaust but i used to run tomei type 80 and tomei headers on my old Frs and i wanna go back to that setup
You will need to retune, I think. If the headers are noisy expect them to drown out your supercharger sound quite a bit. Part of the reason you can hear so much with mine is that I have an exhaust that only gets loud - outside the car - when I want it to. I hate super noisy exhausts that drone, personally, and all that popcorn tune stuff isn’t for me. I will eventually replace all exhaust components (because I will have to) with parts tested for sound so it will be smooth toned and quieter than a lot of other setups.

I’ve had three tunes on it - JR, interim for logs, and final with Delicious Tuning - and there is a difference in how it pops off between them, likely related to how smooth the torque and horsepower curve has become in the run up to redline from the final tune. I am not redlining it in any of these videos, though. That rev is maybe 6800 rpm? I usually have to pull back around 6500 to shift or when I get up to speed in 3rd to keep from seriously speeding and risking a giant ticket around here when I want to accelerate quickly.
Beau Davis and also, I just have a catback. If you have loud headers or exhaust or deleted mufflers, you may simply be drowning out the sound.
@@WDKWCDT its a c-38 kit I installed myself and was tuned by ftw tuning in oregon well not yet on Monday it will be.
Thank you for this! This sounds amazing. I thought when you go Forced Induction, you gotta rebuild engine internals.
The need for internals depends on how far you plan to crank up the boost. On my setup, no need to do that. I’m not trying to make 500whp. Ask your tuner if that’s necessary. I didn’t change anything, just running the SC with a DC sports catback and a custom tune from Delicious Tuning.
Oh and thanks. I love the way it sounds. It’s like a jet engine all the time.
@@WDKWCDT your tune from DT was that ECUtech or OFT?
@@naughtysmurf64 Delicious only tunes EcuTek not OFT
@@UberSpartanVG oppps! my bad!! I knew that.
You have nothing else besides supercharger and exhaust? yours whistles way louder and blows off lots of air compared to other cars with the same kit. Sounds sic!
when you purchase jrsc, it comes with a full kit
That’s correct. SC kit and a catback. I also have a custom tune. Could be because I’m running a c30-94 kit and not the c38, because I’m not chasing “big power.” There could be differences between them that account for that, as a lot of folks just pay the extra $100 for the bigger blower. I don’t plan to use it to its potential so I got the other one.
Tuned to 9.5psi on high boost pulley?
No. The regular pulley can handle 9.5 psi. You need the high boost pulley to go over 10. I’d suggest the c-38 kit because the c30-94 kit tops out there. Also, that’s where you’ll need to forge your internals, upgrade your fuel system, and may as well get a new clutch because you’ll definitely stress out your stock components over 10 psi. About 300whp is the max you can get with stock fuel system components (which I’m still using). I’m also in a place where we have 93 octane and are basically at sea level, so factor that in.
Are those full throttle pulls ? What mods do you have? How do you like the SC?
I'm not redlining it for the most part, these are pulling to about 5500/6000 rpm (with the tune my red line/fuel cut is 8000rpm). I can't on side roads and regular streets b/c with the tune I will hit 60mph in second and be doing about 90 at the top of third. I made these to kinda show what normal driving around and having fun with it is like and what it sounds like because I couldn't find any when I was trying to pick a kit. For engine mods, I just have the JRSC kit and a DC sports catback. And I love it. It was worth every penny. If you wanna know power numbers check the dyno video.
