“That Smell” by Lynyrd Skynyrd off their “Street Survivors” album which came out in 1977 and featured the late, great Leon Wilkeson on bass.
I pretty much started out playing Skynyrd songs in my first band but, looking back, they were the songs that you could get away with skimping on the bass-lines - Gimme Three Steps, Needle and the Spoon, Sweet Home Alabama, and Freebird. Only now, after learning a couple other songs like, You Got That Right, What’s Your Name, and this one, do I have a much greater appreciation for what they did musically, both as a band and, more specifically, what Leon did as a bass player.
One of the cool things about having a big-shot brother-in-law in the vintage guitar business is that, once and a while, he’ll get his hands dirty with a vintage bass. And, when he does, he’ll sometimes let me check them out. He loaned me the old Hofner a few years back with which I did a couple of Beatles covers. And a few months ago, it was the ’59 Precision. I did an Elvis Costello cover (Alison) and a few sound sample clips with that one. This one is an all original 1966 Fender Jazz Bass in Olympic White with a matching head-stock. It’s unbelievable how much a matching head-stock will add to the value of the bass. It also has the pick-up and bridge covers in a drawstring bag in the case compartment which is a rarity in itself. The bass came with black, Guild tape-wound strings on it and, by the look of the frets, which are absolutely pristine, I don’t think this bass has ever seen a set of round wounds on it…until now, that is. I did a couple of quick covers with it yesterday morning and now I just want to get it out of my house. It’s making me nervous.
I’m Leon’s son and really want to get lessons note for note to chord to chord?
Hello Leon. Your Father was a great bass player, but I'm sure you know that. Where do you live? It would be my honor to teach you the song as I've learned it.
@@TJH3113 wtf😂
@@ronniebakedchickensalad3730 The man just wants to give him bass lessons 😭
Older Skynyrd's stuff has some amazing basslines! Thank you very much for this one.
@Kitten Katt Well, to be fair, 40 years ago is pretty old.
Just amazing
If you listen to this bass with headphones, it sounds incredible.
It sure does
One of the greatest bass lines ever!
Truth.
whiskey bottles, brand new cars, oak tree your in my way...
My fav skynyrd tune. Nicely done as always TJ
Thanks a lot, glad you liked it.
TJH3113 Troy, Got a question for you. Not sure if you are a fan of TOOL. I'd like to know your opinion. What do you think of Justin Chancellor, Bass 1995 - Present or Paul D'Amour 1990 - 1995.
As always I value your opinion. One hell of band though 🤘🏼
Thank you so much for putting this up. I am one of those mediocre bassists that hates to take short cuts on songs. It may have taken me 2 days, but I finally have this down! You frickin rock!
Thanks for watching. I'm very glad you found it helpful.
Great cover of a great song. Watching you play this makes me realize just how great Mr. Leon was.
Thanks David. Yes, Leon came up with some amazing bass-lines!
I was just about to comment the same thing, an incredible player Leon was.
Clear, precise, easy to hear and see. I have to learn this tune for a band and you saved me a lot of time. Thanks for posting this.
That's great to hear. I'm glad it helped!
Sir, You absolutely nailed that! Bob Burns was a close personal friend of mine. We played many many many hours together doing the entire Skynyrd song list. He told me many great stories about Leon and Bob considered Leon one of the greatest bass players who ever played. Bob' story on him and Leon working the bass parts up to Sweet home Alabama was priceless. SO many overlooks Leon and the Bass Line in That Smell is right up there with the greatest bass parts of any rock song. Thank you for showing people just how much Leon meant to the world of Rock n Roll. WELL DONE!
Hi Susan and thank you very much. That's so cool that you were able to get the inside scoop from Bob Burns. There are a few Skynyrd bass-lines that rival some of the most challenging prog covers that I've done, in terms of their nuance and technical difficulty. Take care.
Love this, man!
I used to do this song a few bands back, and I always played the verses in open position to keep the movement down. Four hour nights you know! Lol. Your way sounds more consistent and looks way, way cooler. Ha!
I love your vids!
That bass sounds... Beyond sweet
That bass is beyond sweet!!!
You played it so well! Great band! Leon was an awesome bass player!
Smooth as butter!
Thanks!
Absolutely love all the versatility you bring to the Tube for us bassist!! Awesome as usual.
Thanks so much for the very kind words. I appreciate them.
REMARKABLE BASS MY FRIEND!!!!
Yes sir, some of the best bass lines in southern rock!👍
No doubt.
Nice cover! Would love to see more Skynyrd.
Seconded: Poison Whiskey would be one I could see him enjoying.
Troy you make this song look so easy. Your playing is incredible as always! Nice bass . Keep up the great postings. Peace brother ✌🏻
Thanks a lot.
What is this man's name ?
@@tomkeeler4243 the amazing bassist extraordinary is TJH3113 aka Troy.
Great job Troy ! One of my favorite Skynyrd tunes also.
once again great job Troy nice funky bass line by the late great Leon Wilkerson one of my favorite bass players (not named harris, lee, burton, and simmons) along with Tiran Porter of the doobies also fall under the moniker of "who is the bass player of lynrd skynrd"and "who is the bass player of the doobie bros" we may know the songs but do we know the musicians behind them some people don't and it's a shame because you never here about guys like Leon and Tiran so underrated great job Troy!
Down and dirty, just like Leon!!!
Glad you liked it.
Ooh that's Mel... Can't you tell that's Mel? 🌝
This song and Gimmie Three Steps are my favorite Skynyrd songs.
Haha... Cool.
I'm five years late to say - great job TJH3113.
Better late than never! Thanks, Allan!
Thank you again for another great cover!! Perfect chilling with my Sunday coffee!! Cheers Troy!
One of my favorite bass lines and bass players. And I play drums! Great job on this video. Leon is so underrated!! 👍
Very cool! I'm glad you liked it.
WOW, just WOW!!!
Thank you, Sean.
Wow! Unbelievable cover Troy! Thanks!
That sounds spot-on to me. Leon would be proud. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, thanks!
bass is such a huge part of this song, you are an incredible player.
Truth! Thanks so much.
Sounds absolutely massive through a decent subwoofer
Does it? I'm have to try that sometime. Thanks!
This you tube song is fantastic.
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Electrifying and thrilling Troy!!!!! So alive!!! Love it!!! :-)
Thanks Marvine.
Awesome!
Excellent! You nailed it. Leon was a bad, bad dude.
Thanks Jes! He certainly was!!!
Oooooh, that tone! Killer!
Thanks a lot!
I keep coming back to hear this tone. Man, sweet 60s Jazz Bass, for sure!
This was actually one of the "bassiest" Jazz basses I've ever heard. I really had to crank the highs to get it to this point.
Great playing and I really like the story behind it. Love your videos. Keep on keeping on!
Ooooo that sound
Is perfect 👌
I'm glad you liked it.
Such awesome playing
Thanks so much, Tom
You Sir, are AMAZING! Your accuracy, tone, musicianship... Fender had you in mind when it comes to precision! This is the 6,7th video of yours that I've watched. I'm blown away! Thank you for being here!
Thank you for the very kind words.
Awesome bassline, nice and groovy, then the killer riffs...time...really fun, kinda sneaky tricky. Great hands...
I'm glad you liked it! Thanks.
@@TJH3113 Thank you...you are my go to guy for a song that I can't figure out, usually the very fastest and trickiest parts. You make it look easy, but a month later its easy for me....dig it! Every cover Whats Going On?
Magnificent!!!
Thanks Richard!!!
Nice, i love this song. Your cover of that is great. Now my rainy Sunday is a little bit better. Hier form Argentina i salute you!!
That bass just purrs. Great tone.
Great playthrough. One of my favorite tunes from a great band!
Thanks a lot!
this is a difficult song to play and you killed it. I come back and listen to this every once awhile just for the full on eargasm that bass gives me. I can't play this song yet but I'm trying, your video helped me figure out some parts.
It was definitely a tough one to put together, but keep at it and you will get it. Take care!
That was amazing!
Thanks Michael!
Flawless man exceptional
Thanks so much.
Excellent cover. Thanks. BTW, that is one beauty of a bass . . .
Thanks.
Another tasty cover, Troy. Loved it. I'm not a Fender guy myself, but the story on that bass even makes me want to buy it ! lol I happen to have the original vinyl of "Street Survivors" which is worth a few bucks nowadays. Great album, great band.
I would like to add to your comment about your greater appreciation for their musicality. I have found over the years, trying to learn bass lines to my favorite songs that pretty much, without exception, that there are no "bad" bass players. The bass part played is what helps the song along, and what sticks in our brains. Some people voice negativity about Roger Waters, Adam Clayton, Gene Simmons, etc., but their lines are what was needed in the song. Those guys weren't playing in Rush, or Yes, but IMO, the bass lines are perfect in the songs they played. I think one of the most unsung bass players to the general public is Paul McCartney. If you play bass, you know he's one of the very best, but he doesn't get the same affirmation as some. Just my 2 cents, thanks for another awesome playalong. You rock!
Very imaginative line! Great stuff. Bravo.. on my list to learn thanks for this one
Definitely! Thanks Anthony.
I play in a cover band on Ft. Myers beach. As a result of the hurricane all my equipment was ruined. The band is called 'DVS band.' I'm just the bass player. Lol . I want to use this time to get some decent gear. Mostly try and get the tone you use on this lesson! Could you point me in the right direction? I was using an 80's peavey fury. Which I really liked. And an Ampeg 210 combo and 115 extension cab. And a sansamp. . Sounded fine . But I love your tone on this one! Thanks
@@anthonybernabei2000 I'm so sorry that you lost your gear. This bass belonged to my brother-in-law who buys and sells vintage instruments. It was a'66 Jazz bass that, I think, sold for around $18,000! I remember it being the bassy-est Jazz bass I'd ever played and had to do a lot of EQing to get a sound I was satisfied with out of it. I think any Jazz bass sort of bass would be fine for you. Squier even makes some really great basses that are really affordable. Try to get your hands on as many as you can and find the one that speaks to you. Good luck and take care!
Thank you for responding!
Another great job. Always loved this line.
Thank you Kevin.
This is really, really good. I'm thinking about switching from guitar to bass, and this tune really makes me crave that low end!
Thanks. Welcome.
Very nice cover and what a super suburb bass! Only in my dreams. I started on a '79 Music Master wishing it was a Jazz or Precision, but glad my folks got it for me nonetheless.
Great job TJ!
Thanks!
Tjh3113. You are à great bassist thanks for sharing I learned a lot from this vid
Thanks so much Stephen!
Love it!
I'm glad! Thanks!
You're hired!

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
🔥🔥🔥 thanks for posting
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
great cover troy!
Thanks.
Great job. I’ve played this song back in the early 90’s. Just started playing the bass then. Had a hard time figuring it out. You played it perfectly. Keep up with playing. Even if your just playing in your room alone it’s always fun and entertaining. Also I really like your collection of masks. Thank you for the videos.
Thank you. Yeah, some of the one Skynyrd stuff was pretty tricky, do doubt. Thanks a lot, Thomas. Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
man im blowed away ! that was the perfect song for that bass,, wow you played it perfect Troy,,, Thank you, i have to save this one and learn it :) you are the best :)
I should be practicing right now for a jam session tomorrow, but It's more fun to watch and listen to you!! Great stuff!
I hope it went well. Thanks.
Uuuuh that bass don’t you smell that bass
Haha...
I really enjoy your videos TJ!
I appreciate that! Thanks Patrick.
😁 I’m like a kid in a candy shop watching your covers! Off to another!
Haha...I hope you've got some time on your hands, there's quite a few hours worth of covers here. Thanks.
Fantastic as always! My favorite LS tune.
Thanks a lot. Nice to hear from you.
I have been playing bass for about 6 years. Basically 12 or 8 bar blues . I'm starting to get a little bored with the same old tunes. Decided to try out some Skynyrd tunes, definitely much more of a challenge. The bass lines in all there music is excellent. I really enjoy you video's on this band. Keep them coming
Yeah, Skynyrd bass lines are deceptively challenging. Thanks so much.
Amazing. Ive been trying to learn that walk after the first verse for nearly twenty years and never got it quite right. Hopefully I can get it after watching you a few times. You have upped your status to bass god!
Freaking awesome!!!
I love all your stuff, but you do a mean Classic Skynyrd. My favorite band of all time.
I'm very glad you liked it, Tom. One of my wife's favorites as well.
Bravo! Not an easy one to figure out.
Thanks.
love the vids
Damn that's awesome to watch. I so love this song.
Thanks.
Fantastic!
Thanks a lot.
Wow that tone sounds amazing
It's one of the "bassiest" Jazz Basses I've ever heard.
I love your covers! Wonderful job, really amazing!
Thank you very much Mattia!
Very nice 👍
Thanks Rob
Great job!!! I'm definitely gonna use your lines lol THANKS
Thanks. Have at 'em!
Apologies Troy on my question about the model of the bass, I was in the middle of work so I read the description after I watched the video and commented.
Damn spot on! Bravo 👍🏼👌🏼👏🏼
Thanks.
Awesome!!!!!
Kept up with it.
I tried.
Love the bass.
absolutely beautiful as always. I wish you would tackle "Everybody's Everything"....that one always hoses me up....
Thanks. I'll check it out.
fantastic uhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Great cover of a great bassist in a great band playing a great song, Troy. When I was a little kid I remember some of my friends loved this tune because it was about drugs, even though it's an anti-drug tune. Kind of like soldiers listening to anti-war metal to get psyched up for battle, I guess.
Also, kudos for playing this on a bass that is actually older than Skynard lol. Looks like a beautiful instrument.
BASS rules!!! Yeah!!!!!! :-)
Would love to see a cover of On The Hunt! Great job on this. I learned a few parts I couldn't figure out. Thanks!
Is that by Skynyrd? Thanks.
TJH3113 It is! Next to That Smell it's one if my favs of theirs. Has a cool bassline
good lord....shoulda learned this one from you too lol. killer job T...
So it looks like you are not using the tape wounds? Unless I'm not seeing right. As always an astonishing cover. One of my RUclips favorites. Cheers.
No, I changed the strings before doing the video. Thanks a lot.
Another great job, thanks for posting! I always thought Leon Wilkeson was a very tasteful bass player, with surprisingly good lines. Here's my Coke versus Pepsi moment - if you ever consider a Molly Hatchet cover, I can't recommend any specific song, it's just that this song made me think of them, too. Southern rock had a lot of catchy tunes, with good guitar parts, good bass lines, and a bit of humor, like they didn't take themselves too seriously. I liked .38 Special, too, except the bass lines are too quiet and far back in the mix, like they were hired help. Cheers, T!
ahh the J bass my particular favorite, tho i havent played too many except fenders..lol......which do you enjoy the most?..great tune, nice cover as always man
I'm very partial to the Guild basses...and the Spectors as well. Thanks a lot.
Pretty rough looking audience you have there ! Good job, real clean, and a great sounding Jazz bass.
You can say that again. It was very deep sounding for a Jazz bass. It took a bit of coaxing to get any top end out of it. Thanks.
very well done as usual, thanks for sharing! :-)
nice sounding bass that Troy.
Superb cover mate. How do You get that sick jbass sound, is that a sansamp? :)
Thanks. Yes, I think a lot of it was the SansAmp. It was an actual '66 and it was the most "bassy" Jazz bass I've ever played. From what I remember, it took a bit of coaxing to get some "tone" out of it.
thats a tone 🤤🤤
It was actually the "bass-iest" Jazz bass I've ever played.
I didn't realize how busy this line was
Yeah. If you want to hear something really crazy, check out "You Got That Right".
TJH3113 I always knew the guitar parts were hard in this tune, but didn't realize how busy Leon was
