    Turn it up.
Lynn is going to Bethel Woods to see Lynyrd Skynyrd tonight. She’s going with one of her oldest friends, so I’ve got the night off and plan doing a bit of playing. Besides Rush, I’ve probably seen Skynyrd more times than any other band (I’m not a huge Skynyrd fan, but she is, so there you have it), although that number might be just about tied with The Doobie Brothers, since The Doobies seem to open for a lot of people. What does that mean to you? A Lynyrd Skynyrd cover, of course.
The song, which probably needs no introduction, is Sweet Home Alabama off of their “Second Helping” album which came out in 1974 and prominently featured the late, Great Leon Wilkinson on bass.
I may have said this before, but some of the first music I played in a cover band was Lynyrd Skynyrd, along with a sprinkling of Stones, Bad Co., Cars, and stuff like that. Some of the songs we played were Gimme’ Three Steps, Needle and the Spoon, Freebird, and, of course, this one - Sweet Home Alabama. However, this was before I developed any sort of “ear” and was basically just following along with what the guitar players were doing. I find it interesting that we could play stripped down versions of these songs and still have them sound not too awful-bad.
Like the other Skynyrd songs I’ve covered, there’s a lot more going on with this bass line than meets the ear. I’m a stickler when it comes to slides (up or down) and finding the right starting and ending points. I struggled with the up-slides in the segue sections (00:42-00:52) and played them a couple of different ways and in a couple of different positions but this way felt and sounded the best to me. It’s almost like a 1, 4, 8 arpeggio if that makes any sense, starting on the C, sliding up to the E, and finishing on the high C. Leon Wilkinson was a master slider which gave a loose and flowing, yet controlled, feel to his bass lines. I also struggled a bit to pick out this hidden lick at (2:19), I think I got it right. It’s really buried in the mix. See if you hear something different or if you don’ think it’s the bass at all. And something I found a bit distracting was when Neil Young’s voice creeps in at 00:55. If you can’t hear it, it may be more prominent with headphones on, but it gave me the creeps every single time. (I actually learned that it was their producer doing an impression of Neil Young)
    I’m playing the Ol’ ’76 Guild B-301 which is packing a Zero-Mod Thumb-rest.

Speaking of ears, your covers are really ear-openers to some bass lines that get buried in mixes or for whatever other reason we don't pay that much attention to, even as bass players.
I shall thank you for that as I usually do when I do comment on your videos.

@Lyle Wilson You mean Ed King? No, he'd been switched back to guitar, which is why he was able to bounce riffs back and forth with Gary to create this song. It's possible he had input on the bass part, but Leon played bass on Second Helping save for I Need You and Don't Ask Me No Questions. So you're right, but different song

Yeah! Finally, a bass line we guitarists can actually play... simple. It's when you hit us with Entwislte, Geddy Lee, John Taylor or Dee Murray that my head starts to hurt and I realize what a bunch of hacks we guitar players are. Bass rules. Thanks once again for a great, albeit easy, bass demo.

Yes, The Guilds are among my favorites of the basses that I own. I think I've only played one Modulus before, a very long time ago and don't remember much about it. I'm sure it is a very "modern" sounding bass, while the Guild's sound is extremely passive. Thanks a lot.

@@TJH3113 True! Though I can get a deep, rich bass tone from it - and it just turned 25 years old last October :) I'd need outboard electronics to get closer to that Guild sound. Awesome cover. Every bassist I watch does that mini interlude bit differently. Good stuff

Ed King is/was so underrated. So many don't even know who he is! He and Al Kooper built this song... and then both of them escaped most of the Skynyrd drama and curse (including the plane crash). Played this dittie at a couple gigs (heh -- as in EVERY THIRD GIG for the past 20 years!) Not at church, though...

Sometimes, if I'm struggling with a part, I'll use a process of elimination, using some of the obvious note combinations in order to rule note out. I'm sure I tried this combination but, for some reason, decided against it. I believe you may be right though.

Very nice - my wife's mother's family is from Alabama, and now I have no excuse not to learn this.
And I, too, like the sound of that Guild. So many basses, but so many practical things on which one has to spend money . . .
I'm not sure where to post suggestions, so I'm putting mine on your most recent video (I think this is the most recent one). There are several covers of this on RUclips, but none as useful as I've found yours. Have you ever thought of covering The 5th Dimension's "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In," specifically "Let the Sunshine In" (which I think starts around 2:19)? I really love Joe Osborn's playing on that track, and while I've figured out some of it, I know I'm missing a lot of the nuances that you always seem to hear.
    Anyway, just a suggestion.

I love the tone on this track. What kind of strings do you use? I switched to flat wounds a few years ago on my main bass, but I decided it was time to change the strings on my five string... it had been a decade so it was probably time. :) I replaced the roundwounds on it with a new set (Ernie Ball Cobalts) and I *hated* them! Even after playing them in for a couple weeks they still set my teeth on edge after the last few years playing flats. But I think if I go all flats I'll miss having the option of the little more punch from the rounds.

Great Job Troy. Not a big fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd either But I do agree with what your are saying.. The Bass lines have a lot more going on then what you may be hearing. I think Leon Wilkeson (RIP) was somewhat of a genius in his playing.
    Cheers.

I'm so thankful to dependably rely on you to play the exact part correctly. I've been playing such a BORING, LAME HALF-ASSED -no, -QUARTER-assed version of this song for 30 years that I'm now ashamed of myself! I don't know why I never properly learned it.
When I got the subscription notice for this one I thought "Hmm, well if Troy's doing it there must be a reason". What an eye-opener. I guess sometimes when you think "Yeah yeah I know it" "It's just 3 chords" or "I learned it good enough" at age 15, it sticks. Makes me wonder what other songs I've been dumbing-down & butchering for 30 years...
This song is boring no more, thank you!!

I've fucked up my thumb at it's joint with the hand and I put it down to bad technique and not practising out side our band. Is this common amongst bass players and what should I do to recover?

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 года назад

I'm sorry, but I've never experienced anything like that, so I wouldn't even attempt to answer the question. I would suggest talking to your doctor, if you get the chance, or finding another way of playing that does not aggravate your condition. Though I'm not one of them, there are many players who do not anchor their thumbs at all.

The same 2 or 3 who hit just about every video. It really doesn't bother me and I have pretty good idea who it may be. It's a little sad in a way. The one that bugged me just a bit was the James Taylor cover, "You've Got a Friend." You've got to be a real hater to go out of your way to dislike that. Thanks a lot.
