Before you do anything, please check out my young friend, Emily Kim’s cover of “Limelight”. It’s what we worked on when we met at the music store and I think she did a great job on it.
• Limelight bass cover -...
I’ve gotten a surprising number of requests for this song, so here it is - “Bark At The Moon”, the title track off the album by Ozzy Osbourne which came out in 1983 and features The Great Bob Daisley on bass.
I’ve always liked Bob Daisley’s playing (and songwriting). To my ears, he’s one of the few pick players who sounds as if he’s playing with his fingers, but there’s no denying that a pick is involved in the rapid-fire, bass bursts he’s known for. I’m able, to some extent, mimic that speed by using triplets, but I’d normally use a fretted note beneath the top note, or an open string, to land on. In this song, the triplets in the “Then when he's found who he's looking for…” parts are an F# octave which means I had to jump over the C# on the A string on the way do landing on the F# on the E. It’s doable, but a bit more tricky…for me anyway. I couldn’t imagine being able to play it as cleanly as Daisley does using a pick. Another thing I admire about his playing is the tight staccato he often uses. I noticed in this video that during the verses I seem to be actually pulsing (lifting my finger rhythmically off of the fretted A note) my left hand to assist in the muting and choking off the notes. Not sure if it’s actually doing anything, but it makes me feel as though I am.
I did the cover about a year and a half ago, using a beautiful Alembic Essence bass that my brother-in-law was selling and gave to me to check out. Everything about the bass just oozed “quality” but I just couldn’t seem to get this dog to bark. I’m sure another player could, but the bass just didn’t sound right in my hands, so I had to pass on it.
One of the people who suggested the song mentioned that there was an “isolated bass” track available on RUclips which I listened to (well after I recorded the cover) and, while I did fairly well figuring the song out, there are a couple of spots where I’m off. One thing I noticed was that he sounds like he’s hammering-on and pulling-off some of the notes in the bass/guitar unison riff just before the vocals come in…A#,A,A#,C,A#,A,G,F. I’m plucking each note and, on the isolated track, he’s got a bit more “flow” going on. The other part in question are the quick bursts that take place during the choruses. He’s playing each note quickly with a pick and I’m using triplets with the open E string as a landing pad. However, I’m playing an G,A,G, using the 10th and 12th frets on the A string, but it sounds like he continues going up, as in, G,A,B (10th,12th,14th frets). As hard as I listen for it in the recording, I still can’t hear it, but it’s there in the isolated track.
If you didn’t check out Emily’s “Limelight” cover, please do.

By the look in his eyes, I can tell that he is in that "other world" you slip into when playing along with a great song. I get it, brother.
Hope you liked it.
@@TJH3113 I did, and I also watched several of your other videos as well
Ahhhhh....love those Daisley bass lines and lyric's.
Can't beat them!
It's really gratifying to see someone that really pays attention to the details of the bass lines (the minor details are my favorite thing).
Thanks a lot.
You are the best rock cover bass player out there, hands down...You are always as accurate as it gets, and this time doing a signature picking-style bassline with lots of sixteens just with your fingers, well, that is unparalleled!. However the 16th note run at the end of each chorus has not been played 100% accurately since originaly there are plain sixteens there, all the way down! Just classic, picking-style Bob Daisley!
Thanks, very nice of you to say. And, yes, often, when I cover something by a pick-style player, I have to take liberties in order to mimic what they are doing and I will always state that in the text area beneath the video. Good ear.
I didn't actually read the intro text so my observation was needless. Again, very thorough analysis of the bassline and very nicely put into words. Your finger 3-plet interpretation of this bursting 16-note run is capturing greatly the Bob Daisley feel, though.
No worries. You made your point in a way that was respectful to me and helpful others learning the song for themselves. Thanks again.
Respect for Mr daisley. U got it dude
Yes, and thanks.
Beautiful bass !
Thanks. It was very nice, just not for me.
My favorite rock bassist, great cover! Lifting your left hand during the repeated A 8th notes during the verses absolutely makes a difference in the sound, a lot of bass players miss that. Makes for a crisper, tighter sound. The devil is in the details!
I think it might, it's something I'll do without even thinking about it once and a while. Glad you liked it!
I used to play this song a lot in the past. One of the good bass examples in metal genre.
Very cool! I agree.
That was impressive!I never realized that the bass in this track was so busy. This was the 3rd. tape I bought myself as a kid.You the man🤘.
Thanks. Yeah, Bob Daisley is a beast. Very cool. Take care!
But you have to remember Sharon said both Bob and Lee were awful musicians and didn’t fit the band. Truth is Ozzy was lucky to get them at that point in his career. Sharon turned me off the Oz man for a while.
Always love your videos. Great job working with Emily too, it's always wonderful seeing young talent being encouraged.
Thanks.
A great high school anthem for me.. Saw this tour in San Antonio and remember that the crowd was insane. There is a lot more going on in that song than I thought. Another great cover. I think I might give it a try after watching you play it a few more times.. Thanks again and great job!
Very cool. Thanks.
God I love the Alembic bass so much
Very, very cool! On every level. I'm envious of your collection.
Thanks a lot.
That was Smooth, Big T. Nice work as usual. Thanks again.
Word.
Oooh, this was a really great cover. I always liked the bass on this song as a kid!! Nicely done! I need to learn it now.
Thanks.
The great thing about your metal covers - I get to hear music that I would never listen to, so it's all new to me. This was great!
Thanks, that's great to hear.
Great video and thanks for linking Emily's video, so good to see the new generation listening to good music
Thanks. Isn't it though?
Went looking for REM Man on the moon and this came up in the search... I couldn't resist!! Awesome as always!!
How'd that happen...haha? Thanks.
awesome as always
Thanks.
I love how you're vibing throughout the whole song. Just found your channel and I love it. Keep on rockin' my friend.
Thanks Danny!

You know, every time i need to play a song and i'm not much certain if i heard and got it right, i check on youtube to see how other people play it. Sometimes i discover interesting things, and i found your channel a few years ago. It's amazing how accurate you are, and nowadays, when i search for a song and your videos pops up, i fell a relief because i know there is no other source better than you. As a matter of fact, i was not even looking for Bark at the moon, but i couldn't help checking it out. Great, as always
Thank you very much. No one is perfect, but I try my best to learn the songs as closely to the way they were recorded as I can and I'm glad you appreciate that.
Thanks Troy for posting Daisleys line on this video not that wretched remaster with Trujillo.
Absolutely spot on
Nothing less than stellar once again Troy. Tone for days and oh so fluid. I will once again try and talk my band into doing this song so I can come right back here and learn it from you.
Thanks. I wasn't really happy with the sound I got from this bass, but I wanted to do a video with it, while I had it, and this was the song I was working on at the time. Good luck
Outstanding, thanks
Thank you, it was my pleasure.
Right on man, perfection. Nailed it. Bob Daisley is a tough feel to capture and repeat.
Thanks a lot.
Hey Troy,I watched your cover of this song BEFORE (year and a half ago) and as ALWAYS,You just amaze me with Your playing!!! So You don't hit every chord as it was recorded (especially when HE'S using a pick and your not!!!),but SO WHAT??? Your attention to DETAIL is amazing (and always HAS been!!!) and that's one of the ZILLION reasons why I NEVER miss a video from You!!! Your an incredible talent to the bass My Friend and NEVER surrender to the "pick"!!! LOL. Keep them fingers pouncing on those strings!!! :) ~Peace~
always spot on!!!
Thanks a lot.
A lot of movement of magic fingers. Love this Troy!!!!!! My mind is still blown each time I watch any of your videos!! Thank!! Marvine :-)
A bit...a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave such nice comments Marvine.
@@TJH3113 My pleasure!!
Ha loved seeing this, so many great memories. I never got the chance to meet Bob Daisley but I did meet Phil Soussan when he was with Ozzy and what a gentleman he was lol.
Glad it brought back some good memories. Was Phil really a gentleman? Not sure if the "lol" left after your comment meant something otherwise.
No he's a real sweetheart.
You killed it Again. Groovy jam cat daddy.
Thanks.
lovely played!! great
Thank you.
Great!! Congrats!!
Thank you.
Amazing. Again. As usual. Thank you.
Thanks.
I remember covering this with my band when I was 16 years old, you play it more correctly than I did, I'm sure, Troy. But good as this is, I'm afraid linking to Ellie's Limelight cover has resulted in you being upstaged, because that put a huge smile on my face!
We all played things a little differently when we were 16, didn't we? I'm all for being upstaged for the right reasons and Ellie is a great kid, very sweet, humble, and talented. She and her Mother were so friendly and incredibly down to earth...and that smile!
Awesome! Great tone, your plucking technique is great, love Bob Daisley, great video, thanks, noted some of the things I've been doing wrong, learning experience, thank you.
Thanks a lot.
Who would ever give a thumbs down for this!? Watch this over and over to practice...what a great cover!
Thanks!
Flawless

Damn nice job, I always enjoy your videos.

Thanks. Me too.
Impressive. Love the fills kinda going on with the tom tom fills!💎🤘🏻🖤
Thanks, glad you liked it.
Excellent! You do Bobs original parts absolutely excellent justice
Thanks so much!

Finally!! Thank you!!

Well done! You are my goto when I need help learning.
THANK YOU!
Yes, Bob is one of the greats.
Thanks a lot.
Very nice!!! 👏👏👏👏
Thanks!
Respect !!
Thanks!!
Omg! Hilarious! Never in million years did I think you'd do an Ozzy tune! Mega props!
I've done a few of them. Thanks.
A lot (most) people don't realize how talented Bob Daisley is. He wrote these songs - lyrics and music. Sadly he wasn't given the credit he was/is due.
Totally agree!
Great!!!
Thank you!!!
Killer Troy. I think you pissed off the RUclips police. This is ridiculous if they put a strike against you that is crazy because I see other people doing this song and it is still up. Maybe they have a crappy jealous bass player that works there ...lol. Keep up the posting your an amazing player and a great teacher . ✌🏻
Yeah, that's one of the reasons I avoid covering Ozzy stuff...always a headache, but I've got the system down now. They'll knock it down in a couple of days and give me a strike and then I'll beat that and it should be good for a while. Thanks a lot.
Well done!
Thank you.
Thanks a lot for the great video! Cheers from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Troy!
Thanks for watching. Cheers to you as well!
Awesome Troy!
Thanks.
Great! There's a chance I'll be playing this in my next School of Rock show. We're doing a show dedicated to artists who went solo. This is one of the songs we're doing. This will help a lot in learning the song. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks. Cool. Hope it goes well.
Ese bajo suena excelente. El mejor cover que he escuchado. Muy buen trabajo.
Thank you very much.
BEST SOUND EVER , SMOOTH AND CLEAR , PERFECTO
Thank you very much Fernando! I’m glad you liked it.

Great cover as always, i would love to see you cover closer to the heart live version off the different stages album, its so groovy

Awesome bro!
Thanks.
Great job and fantastic analysis in the comment!
Thank you very much.
exelente !!!!
Thanks.
Can't stop shake my head. Your right hand work so fuckin good! Master
That was very nice of you to say. Thank you so much.
Nice job again Troy...Actually I got this album before "Diary" my first Ozzy album was of course "Blizzard" I saw the "Bark at the moon" album(cassette) at a flea market in Queens so that wound up being my second Ozzy album and probably my favorite and yes Mr Daisley does not get enough credit for those first 3 Ozzy albums his bass playing really worked well with both Randy and Jake's guitar playing
Thanks. Yes, most people know by now that Bob Daisley was a MUCH bigger part of Ozzy than he was given credit for. Awesome player, writer, and lyricist.
Great cover👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you.
Perfect dude!!!
Thanks.
awesome cover man, you're insane
Thanks a ton!
This was really good.
Thank you.
Another Great Cover. Love the part at both the solos..in fact even while listening to the studio version whiel the solos were on (great ones) I would try to focus on the bass...so nice...Thanks
Thanks.
That's what I'm talking about brother, and I can see I wasn't the only one wanting you to whip this one out? Ha try it with a pick guys, that's what I do? The short cut you gave me was during the lead at the end, and b4 the solo too, I was bouncing off the D string fret 5 &7, you did it on the A string fret 10 & 12, awesome. Thanks again for doing a 80s rocking song, it's on my 2nd set Oct 28th, 2017 in Memphis. Thanks again, May YHVH God continue to bless you...
Yeah, I got an unusual number of requests for this one. Thanks a lot and good luck.
Thanks again brother, now I can deliver with more confidence. Awesome...
Bob Daisley's body of work is so extensive. I hope one day you can get around to some of his work with Gary Moore. Thank you for this wonderful Ozzy tune bass cover. I also like Rudy Sarzo, so maybe at some point you can get down with one of his bass lines.
Yes, it is. Didn't he play with Uriah Heep as well? I like Sarzo as well, especially on the Speak of the Devil album.
I was fortunate to see Bob on this tour in Jacksonville Florida. I thought it would be Rudy Sarzo since Tommy Aldridge was on drums but instead it was Bob. Needless to say I was over the moon. No pun intended.
Very cool. Bob is another amazing bass player! A hardcore pick player that sounded like he was using his fingers.
Muito, muito bom! Parabéns!
Thank you!!!
Awesome Troy ❤
Thanks Cindy.
Woof...Thrilling Troy!!!!!!
Thanks.
The electricity your playing presents is outstanding. Love it!!!!! Your fingers move so fast and gentl at the same time. Intricate my friend!!!!!!@@TJH3113
Well done on the staccato👌
Thank you Daniel
I did some dabbling with drums when I was a kid, so the whole idea of notes is still a bit foreign to me. 😀 But seriously, watching your stuff has helped me see just how much a bass contributes to a song, and how hard it is to do well. I knew that, of course, but seeing you helped crystallize it all. Thanks for sharing all this with us.
Thanks for the great comment.
great timing....we've got a harvest moon out tonight....and it's huge - and I think it's worth barking at : )
Thanks. Ahooooooo...
solid dude ... great cover ....
Thank you very much.
this guy is incredible.
Thanks a lot.
I love Bob Daisley
Very cool, Troy 🤘🤘
Thanks Jim. Wasn't this the one I asked you to pitch correct but it didn't need it?
Yes, that does sound familiar. Of the early Ozzy albums, I think only Diary of a Madman is a half-step down.
Nicely done. Using a pick he probably lightly palm mutes all those A's. I do the something different to "mute" them. I do it with my right hand by the way i pluck the strings. Easiest way to explain it is I play it heavy handed if that makes sense. Seems to make the notes a little punchier. Bob had a habit of doubling the high notes, octaves, etc. I can easily play double root notes with a single high but he does the opposite. Something I would guess is easier to do with a pick. I had to develop a different way of fingering to get those double highs in. This was my audition piece for the band I'm in now. I had 2 days to learn it and perform it live with the band without any benefit of having met or even played with my band before hand. I'm happy to say I landed the gig. Here's a video of us from that night. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for always posting clear precise covers of great songs.

Cool. Thanks. Wow, 2 days! Thats impressive and it sounded great. Thanks.
thank you very much you are a genius
I don't know about that, but thanks.
I play the bass, I needed this song, to be clear how to play it
sorry for my english greetings from argentina
great cover , cheers from argentina
Thank you.
I too had the same problem with my 5 string Essence, as well as a 5 string Europa. I sold them and got two 5 string Modulus Quantum basses. Same quality with 35" scale and a 1000% better sound.
Badass
Thanks.
been watching your videos following your lead hoping to make my Ozzy experience a success. These are self help. Thanks for a cheat sheet.
Thanks. Hope that you find it helpful.
I love Bob Daisley.. he's work he did for ozzy is just fantastic... I got to get his autograph at the st. louis show and jakes as well after the show.... Bob is also a hofner bass owner as well .. he told me one night chatting on line that he used the hofner on either flying high or crazy train , i can't remember which and i really found that wild that he chose that bass for a heavy metal song .. but .... you would never know
I agree. Awesome story.
I would like to thank you troy for posting your vids.. I am a guitar player who 2 years ago was missing playing music after 15 years i bought just a comtempory hofner bass and started learning .. your vids i have watched over and over picking out parts i couldn't figure out .. you have really push my learning up ... as on today i am slowly learning rush's free will . Its quite a challange I'm just about up to the solo section which I'm sure will kill me... as i am not a finger ticker ... i use a pick hahahahah
It is really my pleasure. Thank you for watching and commenting. That's awesome that you've picked it back up and I wish you all sorts of satisfaction from your musical journey. I remember when I was first learning Freewill and the solo section stretched before me like an impassable landscape. It's not. It's 6 sections (I think). Just tackle them one at a time and then string them together. For the parts that you can't play exact, make up something as close as you can to what you're hearing.
Wow not heard that one for years, Great job Troy but i was a bit disappointed i couldn't see a Werewolf looking over your shoulder? Perhaps it wasn't a full moon lol atb Dixie in uk
Thanks Dixie. I'm not that clever.
Nice one 🎶🎩👍
Thanks.
and that's how it's done..
