As much as it pains me to use my channel to promote something of a personal nature, I’m going to do just that.
I’m going to be hanging out in the Zero-Mod booth at the “Guitar and Bass Expo” in Wyomissing, PA on Saturday, August 19th.
I’ll be playing along live to some of my favorite songs, on some of my favorite, Zero-Mod equipped, basses. It’ll be just like my channel - except with the great potential for mistakes!
Admission is free and, I understand, they are running shuttle busses from NYC and Philadelphia to the show.

Lynn and I are on our way to the door to see these guys play with Chicago at Bethel Woods. Last night we say Cindy Lauper with Rod Stewart there (great show) and I’m starting to feel like I’m on tour.
The song, “Long Train Runnin’” by The Doobie Brothers, is off the album titled, “The Captain and Me” and came out in 1973! Good stuff.
I’ve probably seen the Doobie Bros. more times than any other single band or artist, aside from Rush, as they tend to open for a lot of people. They have never disappointed.
The bass was played by Tiran Porter who, I think, always played solid yet interesting bass lines. When I played this song in a band I played the line a bit differently, but I brought it back closer to it’s original state for this video.
I’m playing the recently acquired Rickenbacker 4003S which, right now, happens to be across the river in Beacon, NY having some work done to it. - Видеоклипы
Your channel is a treasure trove for bassists and music lovers. Great as always.
So nice of you to say. Thanks.
That Ric though. Man, they have the tone, don't they?
Tiran Porter is such a great bass player. I found his bass lines so perfect for their music.
Wonderful job Troy!
Truth! Thanks so much!
At 58 I finally purchased a bass guitar to learn this song and “Carwash” thanks ❤️..
Awesome! Congratulations! What did you get? If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to ask.
Troy, Please don't - even for a second - apologize for self promotion...You are clearly one of the more modest, self- effacing guys around - especially in the context of your prodigious talent and skill...(If you are uncomfortable with this simple bit of "promotion", maybe you'll feel more comfortable if you think about it as promoting Tim and his product - who are also deserving of a bit of self-promotion ...:-)) BTW, yet another great cover...
Oh hell yeah...ML you got that right! A lot of doofus bass players on YT with big egos (and yes many great ones as well) Troy is well up the ranks in any serious bassist's book. Take a page from Trump and - Wait never mind...
Was gonna say something on self-promotion but lets just say you got the goods and you have been a gentleman to all your fans and those few (very few) naysayers alike. Keep doing what you are doing !
Well said, Music Lover!
Well thanks for the kind words but I've never been comfortable with any sort of self-promotion. As I said in another reply, back when I was playing out, I'd sometimes try to talk people out of coming to a gig..."You know, it's not going to be very good and there's probably better things you could be doing with your time...", that sort of thing. The only reason I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and trying to put my best foot forward in this case is because I really have a lot of respect and admiration for Tim and his product. And keep in mind, I never allowed myself to have a birthday party when I was a kid because I had this terrible fear that no one would show up and I'd be the only one there...so there's that bit of anxiety as well. haha.
A friend of mine used to say: "It ain't bragging if you can play it"
Troy- I'm going to crawl out on a limb here and guess that your genuine humility is one of the many positive attributes that made Lynn fall hard for you...:-) As for your "comfort zone", I really understand that issue entirely- having abandoned a major in classical keyboard performance in large part for the reason that I really hated performing...(I'm conveniently forgetting that I was also nowhere as gifted or capable as many of my peers...:)) In any event, I'm thrilled that you ARE comfortable with posting your absolutely stellar performances here on youtube. They are absolutely invaluable to those of us who love the bass and fine bass playing. All the Best, Larry P.S. The comments and personal insights you share in the "Description" accompanying each video are always a real treat as well!
Would love to see a modern day (2024) interview with Tiran. One of the most underated (talked about) bassists. I grew up with the Doobies (band) and now playing bass for 4 years at 61 yo. Come on Tiran!
That would be great, wouldn't it? I think it would be incredible if he sat in on a few songs with them too! I've seen them a bunch of times and they always sound fantastic. Keep rockin'!!!
Thanks for this. Whenever I need to learn a song, I PRAY i see your version. So helpful and faithful..
You are so welcome!
My high school marching adopted this as their signature tune back in the 70s. It remained during my time in the 80s. Another great tune by the doobies and well covered by TJH. Bravo!!
Very cool. Not a fan of marching bands but, for some reason, I bet this song would translate well to that format.
Thanks a lot.
never loved or even LIKED the Ric tone - this is by FAR the best Ric tone ive ever heard - you play like a Champ too!!!
One of my favorite Doobies tunes. Have always loved the groove but your bringing it front and center just brought my appreciation for this one that much higher. Thanks and great job!
Once again, awesome. I have always loves that bass line. Loved seeing it. Thanks!
Everytime I listen to you it's refreshing
Thanks so much!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your videos. You have really helped me progress in my Bass playing. Thanks man!
That's wonderful to hear. Thanks for letting me know. Good luck.
It’s funny to me that every time there is a bass line out there that I love, I look for a cover and you pop up which I love cause you play them always right and great! Thanks!
That's why I'm here... haha. I thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Great cover & great sound on a a beautiful Ric....that guitar is on my wishlist!
I absolutely love the Doobie Brothers, one of my favorite bands. Thank you so much for posting this. Awesome as always!
Thanks a lot. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. It's a great song.
I always come here to see how wrong I've been playing songs.. 🤪 you're a wonderful player and resource. Thanks!.
You don’t have to be a slave to the song in order to play it well. That being said, I try to play my covers as closely to the way the part was recorded as I can. If you find it helpful, that’s great to hear. Thanks and take care!
Absolutely brilliant, I may have to watch this a few times over. Wonderful playing.
Thank you very much.
That Ricky is killing it. As are you!
Love all of your stuff. This BEST!
Thanks so much!
Oh... Thanks for posting. This is one of those lines that I never could quite get right. Now I hear the staggered rhythm I missed.
Yeah. As I said, I used to play it differently when I played it with a band. You're right, there are a few tricky rhythmic things going on.
Nice Rick - beautiful tone ...great song and played to perfection
Thank you John.
Your bass guitar has such a nice tone and you play it really well ! Thumbs up for sure .
Thanks a lot!
As always.. Killer job! I saw them in either 81 or 82 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.. So good.
Thank you.
The bass rocks! It really is 'instuental' in giving pace and tythm to a song, working on harmony with the drums...it almost directs the song. Just great to listen to your.covers with the bass highlighted.and drawn out of that seruptitious backdrop!
Truth. Thanks.
Yes! I've been waiting for this one!
Now what? Hope you liked it.
I have only JUST stumbled upon ur channel and I can already say that I am IN LOVE. i rarely see many BASSISTS play doobie brothers! i love the tone of ur bass as well AND the songs you choose! you doing a fantastic JOB!
Welcome and thanks!
Wow! Great job... how smooth is your touch👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻lovely bass guitar too
Thank you very much.
you bring me great joy while I am woodshedding for cover gigs !!
That's great to hear. I hope they go well!
It's 6am and I love this bass cover It is fantastic
Thank you very much
Was never a huge Doobies fan but caught them opening up for Santana a while back, man, they were great ! I'm a fan now, great bass cover, that Ric sounds so good 🎸
I've probably seen the Doobies more than any other band because they've opened for so many people. I've never been disappointed by a Doobie Bros performance. Thanks.
The Captain and Me! One of my favorite albums. Listen to it at least once a week, and always the whole album. The Doobie Brothers were my first concert (79?) at The San Diego Sports Arena. Anyway - killer cover!
love the Ric. u do really well. thanks for sharing!!
Thanks. You are very welcome
Excellent cover for this song. Best on RUclips.
Thanks so much!
OUTSTANDING
THANKS
Best cover of this song I've seen! Also nice bass
Thanks.
That was awesome. You absolutely nailed it. Man I wish I could play like you
Thanks. Time and practice will get you wherever you want to be.
This is the song that got me interested in playing the bass at 11 years old. I heard a band cover it at a Christmas party at the local boys club.
Very cool!
Love the old MC924. Had one for over 30 years....I had that exact bass.. oh yeah, great job on this tune, and good balance with your sound and the tune....
Rick
Those old Musicians were incredible basses, weren't they?. The bass behind me is actually a Roadstar II RB-750 though. Thanks!
Awesome job as always.
You GO Troy!!! I'm sure You'll knock em dead at that show!!! Awesome cover here (as ALWAYS!!!) I'm not much of a Doobie-Brothers fan,but I hear this song on the radio here,ALL-THE-TIME!!! Lol.So it was nice to SEE You play the bass part to it on here!!! Great Job My Friend!!! :)
Another Rik .. lovely bass. hope you enjoy yourself at the Guitar and Bass expo. wish I could come.
Great²
Thanks for a good mood, song and ric
Thanks. I'm very glad you liked it.
August 19th will be a great moment, I would like to be there. Cheers
Awesome as usual!
Thanks a lot.
Great cover Troy.
I wore out the record putting the needle back on it trying to learn all the bass lines.
That was back in the day before cassette tapes came on the market. :-)
Ti Porter came up with some great and very memorable bass lines.
Thanks again!
Yes, back when the struggle was real. Thanks.
Great, Great, Great as always Troy !
Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.
Awesome playing and sound!!!
Thanks a lot!!!
Bravo!
Thanks.
Excellent Troy!
Fantastic job! Love the tone!
Thanks a lot!
Nice one Troy! That Gm riff was one of the first ones I learned to play on guitar many years ago. The Rickenbacker sounds superb! And thanks for the heads up on the Zero-Mod expo. Don't think of it at self-prom but as passing along valuable info to your many fans out there.
Thanks. Eh, I'm just not comfortable with this sort of stuff. Back when I was playing, I'd actually try and talk people "out" of coming to gigs.
Excellent, Just Excellent
Thanks a lot.
Great Job... Got to meet a few of the Members way back in the Day. Was dating a gal in High School who's dad was there Manager.
Cheers.
Awesome! As usual. Great job and I LOVE this song. Hope you're doing well. Been catching up on your vids. PS that Ric is HOT!
Fantastic as always! Not only are your transcriptions dead on, but I can clearly hear the bass above the band. Well done , mate !
Thank you kindly.
Thank you Troy! This is so helpful! Awesome - as always!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
By the way, this is Rowena!

Great job always, always helping me!
Thanks again!
Gran ejecución, felicidades 👏 👍
¡Muchos gracias!
Great cover of a great song by a great band.
I'd like to go to that expo thing, but I live all the way in Texas, and I'm 15 so I don't really have a way of getting all the way up there.
Thanks.
No worries. I'll check to see if they are running a shuttle bus from Texas. haha.
Damn. Now I have to unlearn this song so I can play it your way. :-) Amazing as always.
Nah, do it your own way, that's what I did when I played in in a band. Thanks.
Just awesome!! The bass part reminds me a lot of Sossego by brazilians artist Tim Maia
Thanks. I'll have to check that out.
You are an awesome bass player
Thanks so much
Great job!
Thanks!
GREAT STUFF
THANK YOU
This sounds really good :D
You aren't fooling anyone, I heard the Geddy Lee tone in there :) GREAT! Job
Haha...it's more to do with how the bass is set up. Thank you.
A favorite that you play brilliantly and cool!! marvine :-)
Thanks Marvine.
Oh so powerful!!!!! I have my speakers on full blast!!!!YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marvine My left leg is moving to the beat!!!!!! :-)
Don't wake the neighbors! Thank you Marvine.
Good Job. I've always likes this "Saucy" Bass line...

I love that Rick!
Thanks. It's not one of my favorites.
Bass party🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!
great job troy!
Thank you.
Woah man,,,great Guy. TQ so much
Thanks!
Awesome, whenever you play a song (i think) I know I find something I missed. This time at 2:34, you slide you index finger up to the the F#, get the g with the next finger then use the finger waitin' at the Eb barred down to get that last chromatic note in. And so smooth! I kept backin that part up saying how does he do that? Now I'll be up half the night working on that maneuver. As always, the BEST version of the song on RUclips! Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for paying such close attention. I developed and have always adhered to a, sort of, "economy of motion" philosophy or style of playing. I don't like making any big, bold jumps when transitioning from one note to another so I'll (almost subconsciously at this point) come up with sneaky ways to put my left hand in position for my next move. In some cases, say if I'm fretting the 3rd fret on the E string (G) with my ring finger, and my next note is the 5th fret on the A string (D), while the G is sustaining, I'll actually slide another finger (index) onto the fret, taking the place of the ring finger and putting it into position for a cleaner (less likely to make a mistake) position.
Thanks again.
Nailed it Troy... As usual...
Thanks a lot.
Great!
Thanks.
Great one..!
Thanks.
Amazing playing and sound you got there!
I wish I got the 4003S, I myself have the regular 4003 but I like the looks of the S more :)
Thanks a lot! I like the simplicity of the S myself.
Executed with the ruthless precision I've come to expect Troy, great timing - not sure if the Rick is the best fit for this song, but it looks good dammit!
Thanks so much, Nick!
he looks like he’s watching a bug fly across the room while he’s playing bass
New 4003 sounds great Troy! Helps to have a great talent behind it.
Thanks.
Super!
Thank you!
Nice !
Thanks James!
Simply the best bassist on the tube! Thx man !
Oh please... Thank "you".
TJH3113 it would be great if u make a cover of "The real me" of the Who! Regards from Italy!
I concur! This is where I come to get all the help I need on bass lines. He's bailed me out/saved me a boatload of time on MANY occasions.
Thanks a lot guys. Those were some nice things you said. "The Real Me" is "in the can" as they say. I'll probably upload it next week, along with a second, slowed down, version of it. Funny story about that that I'll tell when I post it.
yahuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Great Tune Troy! 🎸
Thanks.
Troy i saw the Doobies 20+ years ago and they were awesome.
They're still awesome.
You're the best
You are too kind. Thanks.
I've listened to the isolated studio bass track and he's definitely using a pick on what sounds like a P bass. It's strange, but it doesn't end up sounding like a pick in the final mix very much at all (I would never consider using a pick on this song). I must have seen 5 videos on RUclips while learning this, but your version has got to be the best. That Rick sounds great and the punch and articulation you give it really brings out the funk.
Yeah, Tiran was definitely a pic player. He always got a really nice, dry sound. Thanks a lot Brian. Take care!
Great playing again Troy!!! Wish you would come down here to New Orleans . Promote yourself to the fullest your a very talented musician and truly shouldn't feel any shame or regret in doing so. Keep up the great postings and if your ever this way playing post it I will surely attend it. Peace my brother ✌🏻
Thank you so much. It's just not something I've ever been comfortable with doing. But, as someone else said, I'm really doing it for Tim and Zero-Mod because I really respect him and his product.
Then it is all good. Your promoting a product you use and feel is beneficial to other players. That is not show boating yourself but if I played as well as you I would be showboating myself....lol. Have a great Sunday my brother ✌🏻
Once again...the band calls out a reasonably difficult number, and who do I turn to?? My sensei Troy of course! Thank you yet again.
For me, when learning a new song, it is crucial to view the articulation, and you do that better and clearer than anyone...
Awesome! Thanks so much, I'm glad I could help.
I've never been a big DB fan, but it's not for lack of kickass bass lines, case in point here. (I do hate that harmonica though) And that Ric sounds so sweet! Good to see you using one again.
No worries. Thanks.
Great cover as always Troy, will you be uploading your live show to youtube? Would love to see you live but I'm an atlantic ocean away to see you :". Anyways I think most of your fans would love it if you uploaded your live show here on youtube. Thanks again.
Thanks a lot. I hadn't even considered that.
Troy is a beast.
Thanks John.
Do you remember the US cop show (1980s) 'CHIPs'? Look it up and check out amazing bass line in that thene tune....utterly brilliant
I'll check it out.
Excellent like to see that in Slap style !
You're gonna have to look somewhere else for that. Haha.
Ha ha..true that !
TJH3113 Victor Wooten ! : )
I like your hard, prominent bass sound.
Thank you.
