You have this spot on...I have argued with many guitar players about these chords...Eb to Gm/D to D. The second electric guitar part is exactly right too...when combined with the main riff it makes it "cut" when you hear them together...you have a very good ear for music my man.
Best instructional on this classic on the entire internet and thanks for getting the detail right bout the Eb7 to Gm. Finally someone who teaches it properly.
Words cannot express how wonderful your lessons are. Thank you vary, very much for this. You have achieved what many strive to do but just cannot get it right. Out of all the channels on youtube, your lessons are ALWAYS spot on and accurate. Not to mention your wonderful teaching and playing ability. Always a nice. Stay Frosty.
nope nope ... Hey, I couldn't agree with you more! Ya Andy IS amazing ;-) .... curious, re: your "stay frosty" ending, are you a John Carleton fan? He's the only guy I ever saw use that line ;-)
I swear you have to be the best guitar player I've ever seen. I live on your RUclips page. I Know modesty will not allow you to agree but all your guitar playing is so meticulous. You must be somewhat of a perfectionist. How long have you been playing to be that awesome ? I dream of being able to do what you do one day. I've only been playing for a year and a half. I get SO frustrated when I can't get it all down when playing my guitar. I'm a RUclips guitar student. I just wanted to compliment you on your guitar talent. May God bless you 🙏 and your family.
A lot more sophisticated writing than it sounds......but then again......probably the reason it works and became a big hit. I gave up on learning guitar months ago, but I still really enjoy the knowledge you impart in your vids. A bit of music theory, a bit of history and trivia but with an honest level of enthusiasm that makes it fun rather than pedantic. Thanks!!
Back in the day using a cheap record player, no internet or tabs it was very tedious to get parts. Usually when someone came up with a usable part like the sus chord, everyone you knew played it that way. Being the only guitarist in a band meant playing a little of each part and mashing them together. This was fun to finally hear all the parts played out. Thanks.
Thanks @killermockingbird. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Your lessons are great, I watched your Gregg Lake lessons yesterday and Harvest Moon earlier. Made me think of Yes, And You And I, especially The Preacher, The Teacher. Thanks!
again I must say, you are the best, and I really mean that, you hear and understand the differences in sound and the chords .... and explain it terribly well ...😉👍🏻😁
Excellent! I cannot tell you how many times guitar players have argued with me about that Eb transition. I think I have run into only 1 or 2 players that did it right. And of course, since I play keyboards, they don't think I know. Most are so wrapped up in their sound they don't notice I am playing a 12 string patch doing 3rd guitar part.
Nice! That last part i have been covering on keys for many years live while our "real" guitarist does the main part. Makes for a nice counterpoint. This is really helpful as I'm trying to do this tune on guitar instead.
Tom Johnston is a master at this kinda stuff. Barring and hamering. He does it on listen to the music too. Almost same chords shape but then on 9th fret. That's the Johnston shuffle.
Man you are GOOD! We used to play this song over in southwest Germany back in the '70s in my old cover band and I too went to a Dsus4 after the Eb. I really appreciate your setting the record straight. I am now a huge fan, keep up the incredible work friend.
I love your vids. I can not play some of those chords corrrectly anymore though, I broke my left wrist and I just cant stretch my fingers like I used too. Besides when your playing to a bunch of drunk people in a bar, its not like they notice or care......like Fogerty said " Ev'ry time I've had to play While people sat there drunk You know, I'd catch the next train Back to where I live Oh Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again" LOL

Spot on , thanks alot for sharing correct versions of the songs, God Bless
You have such a great sound and the best lessons on the web. Would love to hear your take on Another park, Another Sunday after watching Tom Johnston play it on an acoustic guitar during the covid shut down.
You know, when this music was coming out, nobody knew who was playing what. From the album covers, I thought the black dude was doing the vocals because..duh. Tom Johnson was..and is a musical genius. By the time he disappeared from the band, I figured that much out at least. The way rock bands rolled in those days...I thought he was probably not long for this world. As Rick said: Heroin is a hell of a drug. Seeing him live on, come back and play on is just a joy.
More Doobie Brothers! Alright! I've been on this Doobie Brothers kick, learning their most popular songs ever since you posted "China Grove". BTW, the first time I heard a seven chord, I thought of "Long Train Runnin'". Thanks for posting.
For the acoustic parts, if you tune the A down to G, you can play it as recorded - With the G bass running through, that's based on the ISO tracks available, it may be tuned to open G as well, great job on this though!
Thanks @jamesdickinson4186. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Thanks Andy for a superb tutorial once again. Now that you have given us Long Train Running you have to do the companion song- Listen To The Music which is very similar. Cheers!!!

Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials bbb
Best teacher on the internet!!! No doubt.
No one has been as knowledgeable about the teaching of this song than this guy! Hats off mate!

Finally someone has the Eb to Gm/D to D part correct - great work!
Good one! Just made a comment about this today. At least the Dsus4 "kinda" sounded correct - at least for our military audiences in Germany :)
We knew this in ‘75.
You have to be one of the most informed quality teachers period and thank you greatly
Words cannot express how wonderful your lessons are.

No, I don't have any idea who John Carleton is. Just went with it, I guess :)

I agree on your asessment of his guitar skills, I like his teaching of "Angie" Rolling Stones song as well.and so many others,
Eb to Gm/D to D. That's what makes you one of the best teachers here, those details that make it perfect.
Great lesson! You're only one on RUclips who has the chords correct. Thanks!

It's like your lessons are the sound track to my life. Great lesson.
Ditto. 1957 was a great year to be born. We were so fortunate to grow up with this great music!
Finally someone has the Eb to Gm/D to D part correct - great work!
This is the part you want 5:10
You covered all the parts here very accurately. Excellent lesson!

Great video! I'd forgotten all about that fourth guitar part, and once you played it, it all came back.
As usual, the ONLY guy on the web that gets EVERYTHING right! If you were local, I'd take you to lunch!
Thanks @killermockingbird. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
I love the background stories. Your knowledge of the songs and your enthusiasm for the music set you apart IMHO. So I say keep it up.

Your lessons are great, I watched your Gregg Lake lessons yesterday and Harvest Moon earlier. Made me think of Yes, And You And I, especially The Preacher, The Teacher. Thanks!
Finally somebody who really nails this the right way! 😊
Thank you! Great Lesson, easy to follow along...you didn't go too fast and you gave very detailed information. Awesome playing and teaching!
yessssssssss.... I'd seen others show how they played the change and something was a miss.... top lesson mate. Much appreciated :D
Have been learning this by ear, and was definitely wrong haha. Thanks so much man! And yes amazing lessons you got here. Thanks again
Very nice subtlety on the E flat to D sus chord, I never realized that, but will play it that way from now on!!
Excellent description of the guitar feel & funk that Tom Johnston & Pat Simmons produced. Great video!
Brilliant lesson! Excellent job explaining the subtleties of this piece
The money chord part got me the gig with a local band thanks man!
Yeahh !! You are the only one who got that mistery chord !! Awesome !!
again I must say, you are the best, and I really mean that, you hear and understand the differences in sound and the chords .... and explain it terribly well ...😉👍🏻😁

Great lesson - love your work!
Gorgeous Paul!
just woodshedding the strumming alone, and really trying to nail the momentum of it is some crazy deep insight...
Fantastic, as usual. Damn, I've been playing it wrong, but at least I know better now!
AWESOME teacher, Thank you!
Nice! That last part i have been covering on keys for many years live while our "real" guitarist does the main part. Makes for a nice counterpoint. This is really helpful as I'm trying to do this tune on guitar instead.
