Totally agree, my personal favorite. Don't know why people stop at Nib even it is so good, you got some great bass lines in all the albums like warning, the wizard for the first album, war pigs, fairies wear boots or hand of doom. He play more notes and melody than other bassist i thought. Don't know why people underrated him so hard.
Joey P that's why Terrance is my favourite. for me is the best not because of his amazing way of introducing lyrics but the technique he uses to speed up the tempo with Toni's riffs. amazing , simply amazing thanks to Black Sabbath we have metal.
How is a timeless masterpiece underated ? This stuff will still be heard into the next century. Creating such a legendary legacy is hardly what you are calling it....
Black Sabbath are only in the top 3 (mostly number 1) on every metal top list ever made and also considered to have created the genre. Vastly underated. 😂
Grew up playing bass then switched to guitar. This was my transition song. Started learning it on bass and then finished it on guitar. One of the best songs in the world, in my opinion.
I watched this video around 80 times over this past weekend. Slowing it down and picking it dry for all the riffs. I played along with it so many times, that I would not have been surprised if you just stopped and said “ok...that’s enough...I’m going home”. Thanks again, it was fun.
Did you notice that most of the song took place in the middle of the neck, save the 4 open strings. That must be in the zone. What a monster to learn that one. There's a certain trade-off between bass making song structure and bass solo melodies. Thats hard to do. And they tend to merge into each other along the way. The good bass players always have the song structure nearby and can both give to the song and spotlight themselves too.
Maybe I've gotten lazy and don't practice enough...but even if I did, I still seem to have trouble picking up exactly what Geezer was laying down here. This video provides vital information for me to LEARN THIS SONG RIGHT. Thank you Troy. Your "Bass Player-programmed" wonderful mind is hugely evident here...to pick out all of those pentatonic "box" fills and bring them up to the light for all to see and hear. Thank you bother!
+luv basses Thanks for the nice comment but, as I said in the "about" section, I'm playing "in the spirit of Geezer" during some of the crazier sections. I was more concerned about coming up something I could play reliable live and wasn't striving as much for "note for note" in this cover.
I just had tears in my eyes. It's so beautiful to hear this wonderful bass lines so strong and clear and not so mushy and in the background like in the original recordings. My son of 2 1/2 keeps pressing repeat all the time.
Damn, its already been almost 2 years since I first touched a bass. I came back to this song today just to see where I'm at from when I first looked at it last year. Being able to play along with you after only an hour of practice is wonderful, especially since I couldn't play it after days of practice back then. Awesome channel and skills! Watching you play has been a boon to my skills on the bass, so thank you for the wonderful content!
Awesome as always! Geezer is one of my bass heroes, not to mention his lyric-writing, and this is one of the best songs of one of the best bands in rock and roll history. There's a local Sabbath tribute band near where I live, and though I'm not really into the whole tribute thing, whenever they are playing they kill, and even after 40 years younger people still sing along to the lyrics, Sabbath's music is that timeless. It's good to see you enjoying yourself, too, you're always too cool, man!
Helium Road I was totally into Sabbath for a time when I was starting out. I was pretty dark in my youth. I think the fact that I'd decided I was going to one take of this song, just like the gig, took some of the pressure off and that might explain my relaxed demeanor.
You and I must be brothers through a different mother. Every time I look for a bass cover of my favorite "Classic Rock" song I see you have it covered. I've heard it said, "Great minds think alike".
That was amazing. I'm a huge Rudy Sarzo fan and could pick out those runs. I was smiling from ear to ear on this track. Really well done. Thanks for sharing with us.
Constantine Isslamow Thanks a lot. The Sarzo part was mainly at the beginning and ending of the first guitar solo, if we're talking about the same thing. I think he may have played ascending root, 5th and octave. I prefer walking down stairs.
I have been watching/learning from TJH 3113 for many years!! He is absolutely phenomenal!!! I know of no other bassist as good as he on RUclips or anywhere else for that matter!!!
Holy Geez....we cover this song and its a pain in the ass. first time ive seen you play it and its good to know that i had the "solo" in close proximity. of course its never the same twice.... (for me anyways) Its also one of the first times ive seen expressions on your face. Normally you look incredibly bored. Your a great player man. Thanks for all the lessons.
I hate to disappoint you, but I went off on my own during the guitar solo. Normally, I try to cover stuff as closely as I can to the original recording but, in this case, I learned it for a live situation so I took some liberties.
I have heard that song 10,000 times and played a few bar chords on my guitar 30 years ago, but Never had a clue as to how awesome the Bass track was. Thanks for the reveal !
Great hearing these classics through you Troy. It’s easy to lose the bass line in songs and how integral the bass is in songs. It’s great how you bring it up front to hear not your playing ability but seeing house the bass forms the structure for these awesome songs. As always great job
Great cover! In the summer of '78 I went from listening to Sabbath exclusively to my prog rock conversion to Genesis and Kansas. I still love Sabbath songs like War Pigs and Into the Void to name a few.
What makes this better than most cover videos, is that I can see how much fun you have when you play. You don’t act like a machine, unlike most other youtubers
You even did that Geezer Butler/Ace Frehley three-finger thingy. I like that you did a tribute verbatim version. This song has a format that advanced beginners could play through. I think naturally the song gets improvised over. I would love to hear your version of War Pigs.
Thanks, but I'm pretty sure that it was not intentional. Actually, I played it fairly close, but definitely ad-libbed most of the part beneath the guitar solo. Thanks and take care, Ed!
Being a new bassist and a Steve Harris/Geezer fan I am just learning the power of playing Root/5th/octave....and understand now why these two are my favorite bassists! Great job...your technique is what I aspire to...even at age 50 and only playing for 2yrs now.
Was looking through your stuff for some more Cake, and was searching for War Pigs and came across this. Did not know that Cake was a cover of this. Impressive as usual.
Like I said, it's like sitting in on master's level instruction class. If The Professor ever charged admission, it'd be a race to see who gets in line first. Doin' ol' Geezer proud, boss. Thanks for another bulletproof cover. Boy, seeing you play live would have been such a kick.
Cool story. It's cool when you can just walk in and everything goes well. I just auditioned for pretty big cover band in my little town, Knoxville. My goal was to go in and them say it is like you have been here all along. And sure enough they said that. I got the gig and now having to learn 60 more songs plus the 10 I already learned. Well this is one of them . And I'm going to play it just like you play it, Or at least try. You have covered well over half of the songs I need to learn thank you so much Troy. You have helped me so much over the last 2 years as I've started to play again. My goal was to work my way up and play with an established cover band and that has happened with this band they are well known and very good thanks again
WOW Troy!!! That's all I can say about this one!!! You SMACKED them strings around like a PIMP!!! HaHA!!! I always LOVE hearing You do songs that when heard from the actual "studio-recording",You can't really hear or even MORE SO......."FEEL" what the bass is doing during most of it!!! However, when YOU play it..........the BASS-SOUND comes to the forefront and comes out and SMACKS YOU upside the head!!! I LOVE THAT about your sound and all these video's You do on here for everyone to enjoy!!! Once again,You RAAAWK Troy!!! Keep it UP My Friend!!!
TJH3113 Lol. Well, that may be TRUE,but it's UN-noticeable to Me,as I was just taking in ALL THAT AWESOME "Bass" sound You were giving out!!! Ahhhh,NICE!!!
Thanks! And congratulations of taking up the bass. I hope you derive as much satisfaction from playing as I have/do. With some time and patience I'm sure you can surpass anything that I can do! Take care.
TJH3113 I do yes!! I've been playing guitar for close to 15 yrs and I just picked up a Squier vintage jazz bass and it's hard! Lol I figured playing guitar it's got to be the same thing in my pants completely different
I have seen some of your videos, and you are so relaxed in most of them, but I love how this song goes inside you and you start to "dance" and sing, I'm a huge Black Sabbath fan and it's good to see how this music goes inside you, because it happens to me all the time... Great video!!!!!
zzzhaggy In most of my videos I'm trying my best to get through the song with no errors which, even on simpler song, is difficult to do. On this song, and the last few I've posted, I recorded with an "as is" approach as if I were playing them live which actually relieves some of the tension.
great story, great cover, rly like how you explained that you covered important and signature parts, bcs when i was complet newbee i lost in a lot of ways to play covers and you 100% help someone understand that cover means you shouldnt play every note that originally played by the band
Glad you enjoyed it! Technically, I'm more of a "note for note" guy, but not for every situation... especially for beginners. Strive for perfection, but be satisfied with what you are able to accomplish.
awesome interpretation , you really inspire me sir , im an old 53 year old play by ear bassist myself my hands always wear out before this song is over anymore lol
Fab cover as always Troy and a great story. I am truly shocked to think that someone with your skills and obvious talent isn't out playing live. Surely that's the essence of any musician, isn't it? Music needs you, so get out there and rock and "roll the bones." 😀
floouk Thanks. Yeah, I've always been a bit of an anomaly in that I've always loved to play, to learn songs, to write songs and to rehearse them with a band, but I have never gotten much satisfaction from playing out. Of course I did it because, that is the whole point, isn't it? But, when I was a young player I would play for hours and hours every day, learning songs and just riffing and would always derive a great sense of satisfaction from that. This RUclips channel has really helped me reconnect to that again. The sad truth is that 99% of an average audience has no idea what they are listening to and there's no way I can (or will) compete with some hack "jumping around like a Kansas City faggot" and hitting all the wrong notes along the way.
very fun song to play! learned it in 2014, if this video was up then I would certainly had learned the song by it. very nice playing as always and an excelent tone!
Absolute monster as always. You know you're listening to a great player when time and time again other long time players (me) constantly think man....I had no idea that like was that awesome.
hope one day to play this song, this is a awesome song to me and my first bass cover I ever seen, thank you troy for the inspiration, I feel like rather your just start'n or have played Bass for years, its an Awesome feeling that never fades :)
Great playing as usual. This is from the first rock album I ever bought back in 1970. Geezer was a big influence on my bass playing. Looks like a Geddy Lee signature Jazz you're playing there
Cigar Dave More strain than emotion. I was actually more relaxed than usual because I'd already decided that I was going to do only one take of this song. That took a lot of the pressure off. Thanks.
Cyclopes gathered in their masses, all pissed off because no one makes one lensed glasses!
Brilliant!
I could totally imagine Geezer coming up with that!
just get a dang menacing monacle .
great crowd back there
carlos rmirez lmao
...fallen or wounded slaves
(soldiers)crowded back there.
They followed the orders of
'War Pigs'.
'War Pigs' are sitting in save
places.
Idk kinda dead
They look like masks from GOOSEBUMPS.
@@IMKINDOFABIGDEAL13 that's exactly what I was thinking lol
One of the BEST and underrated bass players AND lyricist, GEEZER BUTLER!!! Great job... Isn't easy
Marius Durupt let's not forget what an incredible lyricist he is.... he wrote 99% of Sabbath's songs... a true genius in the music world...
Oh yes, i love the lyrics too, i was talking about his bassist talent. Lot a sabbath lyrics make me cogitate. Sorry for the forget :p
Joey P that's why Terrance is my favourite. for me is the best not because of his amazing way of introducing lyrics but the technique he uses to speed up the tempo with Toni's riffs. amazing , simply amazing thanks to Black Sabbath we have metal.
Underrated lyricist, yes. But not bass player. When people pick their top 10 bass players Geezer is often mentioned.
Geezer and Bill made an incredible rhythm together. Vastly underrated.
Yes, they did.
3:59 Holy shit
My thoughts exactly
I'm currently learning this part and holy shit is right 😭
Great cover, I like how he makes his bass louder than the backing, most covers are just listening to a song with somebody with a bass in their hand
Disraeli Gears this
It's unfortunate Geezer's bass was diminished in the mix ... it's excellent, and deserves a more prominent place.
Rite
Where’s the superlike button for this comment!
@@man-gi8suMost studio and live recordings it was hard to hear his bass.
Grew up playing bass then switched to guitar. This was my transition song. Started learning it on bass and then finished it on guitar. One of the best songs in the world, in my opinion.

Haha...thank for bringing my numbers up.
Virtuoso - check out 4:00 - 4:30 insane!
I didn't know War Pigs had such a good bass line until I watched your video man..well done, it's epic..
mtsimpl geezer's amazing
Lol what don't yall listen to music?
Did you notice that most of the song took place in the middle of the neck, save the 4 open strings. That must be in the zone. What a monster to learn that one. onecircle1 Great comment. I've always preferred structure to improv but certainly respect both schools of thought.
Love the tone of the Fender Jazz Bass. Excellent Rendition of a Classic. Kudos

Geezer was the man who first got me interested in playing bass all those years ago...
He was there for me too, right after gene simmons.
110% cool! Totally in the groove!
ThunderBassist Jay Thanks.
I just had tears in my eyes. It's so beautiful to hear this wonderful bass lines so strong and clear and not so mushy and in the background like in the original recordings. My son of 2 1/2 keeps pressing repeat all the time.

3:59= best part!!! I can't believe it is even possible for someone to learn a bass riff like that BY EAR! Nonetheless, this is a great cover. Respect!
Thanks, but remember, I'm playing my own interpretation of the song.
Million dollar bass player!! I personally LOVE the sound of this Jazz bass. Holy grail....
Stunningly, technically gifted bass playing Troy.
Thanks for the very kind words.
Here we have an exceleeeeent bassist
Yes he is lol my favorite on RUclips 😁
This is incredible! I wish I had this video when I was learning this song years ago.
It showcase both Geezer's and your talent. I'd be happy to listen to most of your bass covers as a final mixed product of the song.
Awesome playing.
And you always manage to get the tone I've been trying to get
forever. Great Job
+labgnat Thanks.

Difficult? Definitely.
Referring to it as a pain in the ass though? Hell no dude, it's fun as hell to play in my opinion.
I’ve been listening to this cover for 4 years now. Great work man!
I always come back and listen to it along with MANY more of your covers!
Wow, thanks!
Cool, I played that in a few bands and I played it just like you did... I feel better about myself now.
The best way to make sure you're playing something correctly is to compare it to how this guy does it.
I hate to disappoint you, but I went off on my own during the guitar solo. Normally, I try to cover stuff as closely as I can to the original recording but, in this case, I learned it for a live situation so I took some liberties.
haha, the way you add your own stuff into your vids is NEVER disappointing! Geezer would be proud...
I have heard that song 10,000 times and played a few bar chords on my guitar 30 years ago, but Never had a clue as to how awesome the Bass track was. Thanks for the reveal !
Wow, thanks!

MMSabre79 Thanks. My time with Sabbath was fairly short but very intense.
Excellent, Troy!!

What makes this better than most cover videos, is that I can see how much fun you have when you play. You don’t act like a machine, unlike most other youtubers
Thanks for the kind words but you should watch some more of my videos. I'd actually say that I'm more "machine-like" than the average RUclipsr.
TJH3113 your facial expressions and head movements say otherwise. But I will certainly watch more of your videos!

Which gear are you using? This sound is amazing!

You ROCK Troy! It's always a treat to watch you play that bass guitar. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks a lot!
more Black Sabbath's cover please!
One of my favorites from Black Sabbath ! Great bass from Geezer ! You nailed it ! Thanks for posting !
Thanks Gustavo, I'm glad you liked it.
great job ! was that note for note or some improv?
***** Thanks. Some improv during the guitar solos.
TJH3113 Best improv I've seen though =)
Dude ,Are your improvs are based on geezer`s live ones? wicked improvs btw ! keep on rockin
Always nice to see/ear your covers........great job as usual ...

That was awesome, especially that raking arpeggio.
Thanks.
Mate, seriously. You are the KING! Whoa!
Haha, yeah, now if you'd just let my wife know that. Thanks.
I LOVE that E7 thing at 3:30! Geezer is a genius!
Or is it just an E?
Yes, he is.
I'm not sure.
Geezer would be so proud! Well done(as always)!
Robert Meagher Thanks.

Absolute monster as always. You know you're listening to a great player when time and time again other long time players (me) constantly think man....I had no idea that like was that awesome.
Thanks a lot.
hope one day to play this song, this is a awesome song to me and my first bass cover I ever seen, thank you troy for the inspiration, I feel like rather your just start'n or have played Bass for years, its an Awesome feeling that never fades :)
Thanks Cindy.
Great playing as usual. This is from the first rock album I ever bought back in 1970. Geezer was a big influence on my bass playing. Looks like a Geddy Lee signature Jazz you're playing there
Thank you. Yes, it is a GL Jazz.
It was a joy to see your face emoting during the solo section. I haven't often seen your reactions as such.
Well played!
Cigar Dave More strain than emotion. I was actually more relaxed than usual because I'd already decided that I was going to do only one take of this song. That took a lot of the pressure off. Thanks.
You're a phenomenal player, man. I can't say anything more than that. Just brilliant.
Thank you, you are too kind.
