- Oscar® Winner, Best Short Film (Animated), 2006
If you’ve heard of the butterfly effect, how about the falling cow impact? Whimsical, philosophical and absurdly hilarious, this NFB animated short follows Kasper, a poet who attempts to find out whether he can trace the chain of events that led to his birth.
Directed by Torill Kove - 2006 | 15 min
A Mikrofilm and National Film Board of Canada co-production

No. Thank you Torill Kove for sharing your work. I thought it was great. :)
No, thank you! Brilliant film, definitely my favorite.
Torill Kove This is the real Torill?
***** yes It is
That's awesome! :)
I discovered this when I was 13 years old and I'm almost 24 and I still watch it several times a year 😍 I love it so much ❤
Me too.
So many years of watching it several times a year, and yet it never, never grows old. Each time there is something I didn't notice before, or a detail I'd forgotten (THUMP! went the casket) or even one that I remember but find myself waiting to see every time (the bits of business with the dog, the flies emerging from the beehive). Totally deserving of the award ... May every year's winner be as great.
"perhaps we're all originally from Denmark."
some of the quotes are so awesome haha
I’ve watched this movie every day on Valentine’s Day for twelve years now. I was in high school when I first saw the movie, but ever since that first time, I’ve always been so inspired and struck by how sweet and how beautiful this story is. May we all find our Peter and our Vreslimae.
I really like this one. It feels like a classic story you'd hear in Reading Rainbow and is very sweet and whimsical. I also love how in love it is with various parts of Europe.
I find that refreshing as of late.
I like that the Poet wears a full arm sling for his broken thumb.
I've been watching this for years and end up showing it to everyone I date
I adore this story on so many levels . One of the feelings I got from the end is that sometimes bad things in life happen for beautiful reasons when all is said and done. Thank you for this lovely piece of true art ❤️
i come back to this every now and then and the story still touches my heart. good stories never get old.
Full of subtleties, poetic to the core and the music is superbly supportive both in creating an atmosphere and being part of the narrative. Bravo!
the drunk people on the ferry made me laugh every time!
I love everything about this film. It is as if the stars in the heavens are speaking to one another through the earphones I wear and that my head just casually happens to be between them.
there are two words in this world that no one can describe and they are love and joy
The resolution at the end is my favorite part, that this long winded soap opera like plot can get tied up so nicely and be so smooth.
If you look at other animated shorts that get honored at film festivals and the oscars, the audio tends to very score heavy; the fact that this is narration heavy is nice and different. I see why it won an oscar.
What a wonderful story! Me and my sister have often wondered what our lives would be like if say, our parents had different professions, or had lived in a different country - but then we realized that they would have never met and we would not exist! This is a wonderful film, pointing out the universal truth that a great many things came together at just the right time for each and every one of us to be born!
This always makes me reflect back on the simple chance flukes in my past that set off a chain of life altering events... I can just imagine them now, and I wonder how different my life could have been had they occurred slightly differently.
I came across this a couple of years ago on my recommendation but I just ignored it. thank goodness I bumped into it again today because if not.. I wont be able to tell how heartwarming the story is :)
"are you nuts? i love your hair!" that was funny. i like that accent :)
Beautiful film. I wish more people would see this and realize how our lives are destined by little coincidences and accidents
This is a film I watch every so often. My whole family loves it. :) We're Swedish.
this story shows the true value of love., its truly beautifull.
I just love the dog ^_^ He always got kicked by Ingeborg's husband when he licked his shoe and when the husband died, the dog licked Ingeborgs shoe and she doesn't kick him. And then he hugs her, that's just so cute.
And the "When a relative dies" sentence is so full of win. I always have to laugh when I hear it ^____^
Well I'm certianly glad for a Danish poet, Sigrid Undset, a rainy summer in Norway, a slippery barn plank, a careless postman, a hungry goat, a broken thumb and a crowded train.
Because I would have never have gotten to hear this beautiful story. It makes you wonder just what your own creation story it.
Absolutely wonderful.
That was so dramatic and touching. Therefore, it earns itself a 10/10. 10:29 was pretty much the best part of the animation.
I'm not sure why but I always cry when I watch this...
he just looks at his thumb like "huh....well, that sucks."
i loved how the whole story was about the poet and not her parents but the whole point of the story was about her parents!
that was great
The music for this movie is beautyfull
I couldn't help watching this a second time, it's just so heartwarming. I shared this with my mom and she adored it. Thank you very much for making this wonderful piece of literature.
This story is... unconventional. But quite sweet. And lol at al of the ppl drinking as they as they got on/off the ship. So typical.
If there weren't those minuscule happenings then "Who knows i might still be a little seed floating around in the sky waiting for someone to come and get me". Be grateful to ur precious life always.
This is so beautiful. It's the kind of love story I'd like to pass on to my (eventual) children and grandchildren.
I'm a writer too, so who knows how I'll get my inspiration?
I was so pleased when this won the Oscar -- well deserved. I'm also pleased and surprised to find the NFB sharing on RUclips -- thank you so much!!
are you nutz! I love your hair(: lol that was great.
Ryan Thomas my favourite part haha.
The narrator's voice is so genuine. I couldnt imagine a better fit
Everyone who likes this, should read the new book "The Nordic Theory of Everything" by Anu Partenen 😊
What's it about?
Hello Alejandro - It's a nonfiction book, which compares Scandinavian culture and ways of doing things, to US culture and ways of doing things. I'm finding it fascinating!
Kathy Brown I haven't read it. From what I read from description, it by this Finnish woman and it's mostly her own personal observations. I did read Michael Booth's The Almost Nearly Perfect People, which does get into the economic and political aspect of these countries, which is a lot more nuanced than people think.
So….what’s Mrs. Partenen’s prognosis? What are we doing wrong?
The best of both worlds...simple and concise yet profound and heartwarming.
I first saw this short animation piece after staying up all night after a wedding, at first I really did not know what I was watching but after watching the short work of art I was moved but the only problem was I did not know the name of the animation until I went looking for another work. And now that I found it I highly recommend it to everyone, if you love poetry, animation, short stories, and love a inspiring story watch this film you will not be dissapointed.
it brings tears of joy every time I see it. There are so many things i want to comment. It's like the asian butterfly's wings but with so much positive meanings and simplicity. just great.
What a coincidence, my third cousin's brother in law was Sigrid Undset's great uncle's niece's husband's grandfather...
epic...
This short film was so profound and beautiful, a well told story, it made me cry and smile at the same time - thank you to the person on Campaign For Liberty who linked to it.
the humor is placed so well here, it really gives it extra depth
The entire last minute gave me continuous chills... that was a beautiful story.
I just watched Jaden smith giving Oscars and ended up finding this amazing short animation. Some coincidences are beautiful.
This is one of You Tube's most beautiful surprises.
The absolute best story I have seen on RUclips to the date. WOW.
Absolutely Brilliant. I was at the party tonight and your film was the best! Everyone was talking about it. Congratulations and thank you for making it.

This was great. I see why it won an Oscar. I loved the narration and the animation was charming. Good job.
Great story, great animation!
And the voice of the prompter ... so tender that it seems to close as parent.
I love it!
NFB is my favourite impromptu youtube deep dive in a long time.
Story is fantastic and this movie is so interesting! It is definitely one of the best short movie I ever seen!
I took much delight in this tale, I enjoyed its characters and motifs, but I especially enjoyed how it kept making me think "Oh I get it, these two are the parents of the narrator" but then made me go "...Oh, these two are actually the parents", it was simply a brilliant tale. :)
Amazingly good! It was really heartfelt, and I loved the narrator's voice. The humor was fun, too.
Totally awesome. I wish I was a child again, and could enjoy this story in the simple and direct way only children can.
Dude! It's only 15 minutes! You don't have 15 minutes to see this work of art???
That was an amazing movie... I was moved.
I have just came by this short film, by watching some Oscar videos. I'd say it is a coincidence, but what a lovely one it is.
Hmm, this got me thinking, that even if things don't go as planned (the letter being eaten), yet still, life finds a way... Amazing. We cannot control everything, but we could just kindly wait...
a story listen to again and again. how much a coincidence our birth is. and how much it gives us the opportunity to beeing humble. What a great gift life is and how small we are.
What a beautiful beautiful story!
Den ger massvis av glädje och lycka! Tack!
Maja
Watching this again after 9 years. So beautiful!
I was kinda bored at the beginning but I am glad I watched the full movie. It shows how rare it is for your specific parents to meet.
1:57 "famous swedes who were actually Norwegian". And then of course Liv Ullmann. Oops, then the lovely narrator ❤️❤️. A real pleasure to watch
For sure a wonderfully told story! Thank you for posting it, we loved it!
What a perfect story. thank you to all who were involved in this.
in the middle i was wondering if i should or shouldnt like it, but after the end i did nothing but smile. it was lovely
This is one of the best stories I have ever seen. Everything fits together so well.
Delightfully drawn and a great sense of humour. You're quite brilliant -- many thanks for the pleasure
I saw this on the CBC a few months ago! It just came on, random and unannounced, and it was completely transfixing. Glad to see it here!
Magnificent... count the stories that took place which were not narrated :)
The dog's desire for approval, for example... How brilliant..
Oh, I remember this! I watched this for my Film Studies 101 class; very enjoyable.
I love the accent + voice of the narrator... very sweet indeed!
an absolutely charming story, got real deep in the end. Also it had dogs, dogs make everything better.
the buildings across the water as he is gettin on the boat look exactly like the ones in copenhagen, really brings back memorys! this is a great video
This is an absolutely charming animated film. Slow, but very sweet. I think it would be good for children as well. Liv Ullman is a great narrator, as well as actress.
This is excellent, I love the little touches like the passengers, the guy on the bike espeacially
That was so beautiful.
It makes me wonder what my pre-life story is.
But I'm sure it could never be as gorgeous as this one.
This is one of the most beautiful stories I have ever seen. I love it :)
this film is medicine
NOT boring to me -- I really enjoyed it. Thank you for making it available.
I love this!
The story of Kasper and his love remind me of when my parents were still dating.
Especially the part about the letter that Kasper never got.
I can only echo what others have said. Brilliant! Wonderful! And what a sweet surprise that Liv Ullman is narrating it.
I simply adore the passengers on the boat and the cows attempting to 'climb' into the barn. :D
I live in Norway and found it interesting to listen to the names etc. but it was still amazing!
That was sooo adorable. Very inspiring and hypnotizing in a way only children's tv can hypnotize you. I'm actually Danish - from Copenhagen :)
This animated film was such a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing this.
that was beautiful! i almost cried when casper had to leave!
So kind, so beautiful! It's brilliant, thank you very much!
beautiful, captivating storytelling at it's best.
Very very inspiring. I love it. Wouldn't it be great for all of us to know such a rich story about our origins...
This is such a lovely story! I admire the art of coincidence and all it brings to two people's encounter.
Im dumbfounded, the story made me feel so weak it was so amazing. And the narrators voice was perfect!
What a beautiful piece of animation! another great Canadian-Scandanavian link. The drinkers boarding the ship, reminds me of stories Finns have told me of drunken ferry trips to Estonia and Sweden. It must be something in the Nordic air, eh? Thanks, NFB
One of the best animations I have ever seen.
My brother has this on dvd together with the filmmakers previous animated short. Very cute.
"but she was danish"...hahaha class!
Nice! This is the longest movie I've watched on youtube, but I watched it all the way to the end.
WOW dette er så smukt. Jeg adore opmærksomheden på detaljer i denne video og i optagelsen!
great job, uplifting. loved the drunk guys that came off the ship every time haha
I think this is a wonderfully crafted story animation. Rightfully deserving of an Oscar. My favourites are the booze cruisers and the backpackers getting on and off the ferry! (o:
Absolutely brilliant!
Left me with a big smile on my face.
