Not sure if you guys watched it till the end. But this short animation IS based on a true story that happened during the Halifax explosion in 1917 when a sailor was thrown 2km away by the explosion and lived
@@QuantumWalnut iirc it was actually based on a firefighter who was responding to the fire near the waterfront and was knocked back (not nearly that far) and had all his clothes blown off. There WAS an anchor that was thrown further than 2km though. Pretty impressive for a giant piece of metal. edit: google says his name was Billy Wells.
Fun facts: the Halifax explosion was 4 times more powerful that the 2020 Beirut explosion. Ocular medical science advanced because so many people in Halifax were at their windows watching the fire in the harbour before the explosion. Boston sent so much help that to this day Halifax sends Boston a Christmas tree every year. The north side of the Halifax City Hall clock is stuck at the time of the explosion--9:04 am. Also see the animators' "Wild Life"--so great.
FANTASTIC! I LOVE this. I love that the character of the sailor is all there for us to put together. I love how detailed it is, like him remembering punching another sailor and then re-remembering that he was punched back much harder. So many metaphors for life. And also love that he didn't lose his cig.
Loving this short. I live in Bridgewater NS Canada. After the explosion, they built a lot of cement block houses that were supposed to be able to endure another such explosion. You can still see these houses in the North end on Halifax, which took the brunt of the blast. There is also a large monument for the victims of the tragedy on the other side of the harbour. Each year they have a ceremony there. They used to have the explosion survivors at the event, but I think they have all passed away now.
Lucky enough to see this in a theatre and yeah really beautiful and my spouse cried when he started seeing his childhood flash before his eyes. Really saids a lot without any dialogue or title cards. This is a good example of how to tell a story with no words.
A week ago I spent an hour on Google Earth over Halifax because of a documentary on the disaster. I’m glad I understand the background. Stunning animation.
Fantastic! Even pays homage to theNFB's late great Norman McLaren in his classic "Begone Dull Care" with an explosive frame by frame abstract sequence. So much more to say but I'll leave it at inspiring and atta gals and do more.
Barometer Rising , a romantic-realist novel by Canadian author Hugh MacLennan is a sensational read. Let's hope this film gets the accolades the book garnered and also wins at the 2023 Academy awards.
Love that book, I literally just finished and submitted my college dissertation today and it’s all about Barometer Rising. Such a coincidence that I watch this short film now in prep for the Oscars tomorrow!
Geez, always one of those who cant handle handle even animated nudity, let alone real life. FYI, His clothes were blown off and it was important to show the power and REALITY (this was based on a true story) . Would you prefer he look like a genderless doll so you dont get aroused? If youre triggered by that, maybe dont watch any movies that arent Disney or rated G. Its really not that big of a deal.
@@tinacorbet4705 about real event indeed, but what is this animation really? Ships go boom, send a man flying and for the rest of it he just keeps spinning until he lands, while we watch random cuts and stylised stock videos. Surely, this could be done in a better way
@@duzehalo it’s supposed to represent life and the meaning of it. He’s floating through space and time as his life flashes. He’s understanding his purpose and what’s led him to this point. @@duzehalo i guess it didnt touch you the way it did me. As soon as I saw him as a baby, it was his whole life flashing before him. Thx, I would have missed that.
Jesus, HOW? Did he land on a tree and somehow survived the blow?
👍

Just before the two ships hit, I was thinking, "Do these people know they replicated the Halifax crash?"

I like how through all this he doesn’t lose his cigarette 😅
As a current film student in Halifax, I'm so glad this is being recognized by the Academy. Well done :)
What a short. Beautiful and glad it got nominated.
Congrats for Oscars nominee.

Extraordinary animation...... Oscar worthy, indeed!
I just heard one of the ladies being interviewed on the radio in Halifax. It's up for an Oscar.
Thank you for posting so we can all enjoy this treat of a film.
Extraordinary film and music. Thank you 🙏
